This was actually a smart move despite it being a bit of tear jerker moment, simple reason all traces of names disappear but "I love you" was to generic to be deleted by the strands and time parting, in my personal opinion I think he wrote that deliberately knowing there was the risk his name would be forgotten by her with no trace.

This was the first movie I watched with my ex, Taki saved Mitsuha in the end but I couldn't save my ex, I was so busy with my life, I started avoiding her, ignoring her took her for granted thinking she would always stay wiyh me. She left me, she is with someone else now and I have also moved on, yes. But there will be no one that loved me like she did and I will regret it for the rest of my life that I couldn't save the love of my life.
