Taki writing „I love you“ was so smart because he knew that the name would vanish in the same way that his diary entries did. So he wrote something that was not adressed at Mitsuha’s memory but at her heart. This way, even though they did not remember each other explicitly, they knew there is someone who they dearly love which is why they find another again after all these events.
I remember seeing this ages ago, but apparently the character Mitsuha was starting to write on Taki's hand doesn't match what her name would be, but it does match the character for "I love you"
Omg why am I so dumb and so angry at him. I completely did not make the connection. I was so furious with him doing that thinking maybe she could find him again. It didn't occur to me that it would be erased too like the phone entries.
I love that the film opens with Taki and Mitsuha as adults, talking about how they both feel like they've lost something important. This helps the audience to get into the same headspace as the characters, since we also don't know what they've lost.
So many parts of Your Name are expertly crafted, it's no wonder people went bananas over it. Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko), Makoto Shinkai's next project, was also quite wonderful. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and do so. Also a wonderful film with so many themes that hit so close to home, and absolutely gorgeous art work.
Which also puts us in the headspace as them when we discovered their story, because like us, they rediscovered their story the same time we’re seeing it unfold. So it hits harder when they ask each others’ names
@@Sojo214 Whethering with you was nice and i’ll say the side characters were more entertaining than Your Name but idk, SPOILER I didn’t really like the bittersweet ending. Like, cool, you’re together but the world is gonna drown now. Also the Your Name cameos make me bad bc they reunited and are probably gonna die within the next few years.
You make it sound deeper than it actually is lmao, of course we know what they lost. Even without watching a trailer you immediatly know that its about these two.
The biggest part of Mitsuha's "laughter through tears" is that she was going to write the same thing. She was starting to write the characters for "I love you" as well. That's part of why she laughed.
I mean the first stroke was horizontal so it could've been for the su of suki written the way Taki wrote it, or the first stroke of the name Mitsuha. I think it is purposefully ambiguous tho
Interestingly there is exactly one scene where I couldn't tell on first watching who was who. That one being where the grandma, sibling and Mitsuha deposited the sake. I was only able to tell in hindsight it was Taki, since he had no other way of knowing of the sake.
I remember hearing someone say "Miyazaki makes the magical feel like the everyday while Shinkai makes the everyday feel magical" and I think this film is a great example of that
I feel the quote was emphasizing the differences in how Miyazaki and Shinkai use magic in their works. Oftentimes, Miyazaki places the whimsical elements front and center in his narratives, and they go unquestioned by the characters and the audience. Think of how the existence of wizards, moving castle, spirits, and gods are presented as normal in their respective films. On the other hand, Shinkai's use of magic is oftentimes a lot more abnormal, supernatural, and mythical. The way Shinkai introduces the body swapping in Your Name and the sunshine girls in Weathering With You differs from how Miyazaki would normally incorporate those elements. Of course, neither director follows the trend all the time. You pointed out a good example of Miyazaki's being The Wind Rises with others being My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. I haven't seen Children Who Chase Lost Voices, but from the bits I have seen and from what I've heard, it seems to make for a good example of when Shinkai breaks his mold as well.
Spot on comparison. Miyazaki does an amazing job creating these special worlds with their own set of rules and unique beings. Shinkai on the other hand makes his stories take place in our own world, and genuinely feels like they *could* happen. Everything, from his photo-realistic animation, to the use of smartphones and current technology, the grounded and not over-the-top characters designs, and backdrops ripped straight from real locales and Japan help to make his films feel real and rooted in today's society
@@frankfromalbuquerque3506 thanks lol, I like it too as it reminds me of my mother. I also got to see it in person last year in Washington DC which was cool
Was funny to watch them holding back their tears, while I was crying over that scene again. This movie is just a masterpiece in every way like a lot of anime (e.g. Your lie in April).
From a phycological standpoint, Violet Evergarden would be a great show to go over. Dealing with loss and the switch from war to civilian life is done so well. And she learns what the meaning of love is by writing letters for people who have their own stories to tell.
What I love about this movie is the dichotomy between Mitsuha and Taki; Mitsuha has her whole life ahead of her and was given purpose by the people around her which was suffocating for her and put a lot of responsibility on her while Taki doesn’t really have that and just sort of does his own things like a wanderer. It was only until they swapped bodies was Taki able to find purpose and pursue Mitsuha and Mitsuha was able to stand up against her father and start paving the way for her own purpose. It’s like they found purpose in each other.
I can't recommend enough The Wolf Children, it's a great story about love, self-discovery and acceptance, it also addresses the struggle of a single parent. It's not a perfect movie but every time I watch it I just bawl my eyes out, the tone in these films is just so kind, so you can't help but feel so emotional.
@@alejandrorivero7558 I think it's a way to express my love for The Wolf Children, and because English is not my primary language I think the meaning was kinda lost when using the term "can't recommend enough", so yeah it's my firsslt time recommend it on this channel, sorry for making you confused xD
@@nightshadow24 I think the love making scene wasn't unnecessary because it inherently express the wholly acceptance of Hana and her husband. I get that it's kinda uncomfortable for some, but sexuality is not something to be afraid or ashamed of, it's as much of an expression of love as a kiss or hug, if not of a more intense level
Those scenic shots around Tokyo are actually accurate. I live in Tokyo and they’ve drawn those places exactly how they look in real life! So much attention to detail. Even the signs on the trains and things like. Its not the first/only anime to do that of course, but yeah, it’s something I love about this film.
As far as I know, a lot of anime movies and series do this attention to detail. Anime is often regarded as childish, because it is animation, but I think, this is a form of art that deserves having so many fans.
I lived in Gifu prefecture, which borders Nagano prefecture, where the lake town supposedly is. They recreated Hida (which does exist) beautifully. The lake town doesn't exist, of couise, but does feel like it's authentically part of that Gifu/Nagano area. Supposedly that's where Shinkai Makoto grew up. A Silent Voice is set in Ogaki, Gifu, and that's also full of nostalgia. The school for the deaf in that movie looks like it was based on the one in Gifu city, where I worked for a bit.
The Tokyo scenes stand out for a detail that might not be obvious at first: the billboards and logos are real. I don't want to know how much effort was spent on getting a license for all of them, it's insane. Japan has very strict laws about this compared to western countries.
The moment that Mitsuha opens her hand and sees "I love you" on her hand, that was the moment that broke me in this movie. I had liked it up till that point, had an interesting premise and beautiful art, but that was the moment I was fully immersed and wanted everything to work out.
My boyfriend's friend and I had seen this, and we convinced my boyfriend to watch it too. We were doing it virtually, and at the point she opens her hand, we heard his friend throw his keys across the room. 🤣🤣🤣
Glad you guys liked this movie! A cool note about the sharpie-handwriting scene: Taki wrote "すきだ" (I love you) and Mitsuha wasn't able to finish writing her name...but she actually wasn't going to write her name in the first place. You can see that in Taki's hand is a long horizontal stroke which isn't how you would start "みつは”, the first stroke is short and to the left. You could argue that she was going for "三葉" which is the Kanji equivalent but its unreasonable to write the second character in what would presumably be a short time. In other words, she was actually going to write something else that starts with a long horizontal stroke...There's not many characters that fit this bill, depending on your handwriting style, but the character す will always start with a long horizontal line in any handwritten form. Which means that she was probably intending to write "すき" (I love you) herself. 10/10 moment.
I absolutely love this movie. And the twist that they are also time traveling is done perfectly. Another animated movie you should look at is _Howl's Moving Castle._ It tackles war, conscientious objection, pacifism, self-esteem, and belaying your dreams for family.
This movie makes me bawl every time. I literally shouted "COME ON!" in theater at the last 20s, before they both turned around and said the titular line. Theeeen came the waterworks. Grown man crying in the corner of the theater, would go again, 10/10.
There’s a lot to talk about on a personal level too. Especially in the two main leads. I can empathize with Sophie, being the eldest sibling, having to act as an adult at such a young age and how it changes her perception of herself and her self-esteem. You can say the same about Howl except he has the opposite issue of being immature and afraid of responsibility. But they learn from each other and balance each other out.
I love how the creator of "Your name" Makoto Shinkai perfectly captures the feeling of being a teenager in love in this and his other films. The longing, the awkwardness, and how life or death it feels, all while you are trying to figure out your life, become an adult, make important decisions and etc. I surely felt that way when I was 16-17, so I get a sense of nostalgia watching his films.
I think another thing that's implied to explain why they forget each other is that Taki went to the "underworld" in order to find Mitsuha again, and as Mitsuha's grandmother said earlier in the film, you must give something up to return, hence Taki loses his memories. There is so much incredible symbolism, both overt and subtle, woven throughout this film that really just takes it up a level with every rewatch. I read somewhere that Shinkai wanted to build from the idea of seeing someone for the first time and having the inexplicable feeling of knowing them...and man did he nail that. I'm so glad you covered this film, you articulated so many things that I love about it. Thank you so much!!
Shinkai loves having his plots revolve around different themes of love. The movie he made after "Weathering With You" has a theme about fighting against fate itself to be with the one you love, consequences be damned. He creates such unique romance stories because of this approach
@@iaxacs3801 also a fun fact about Weathering with you, is that it is in continuity with Your Name. In one scene, we see Mitsuha’s friends, and they are together.
@@Grayson.P you also see Mitsuha and Taki. Most of the events of weathering with you are before Taki and Mitsuha find each other again in Tokyo. But at the end of the movie there is a time skip. Taki's grandma has moved and we see wedding pictures of a young couple in her flat. So it seems that Taki and Mitsuha got married in the meantime.
Your Name is possibly the most beautiful film I've watched. I cry every time I see it 🥲Thank you for the reaction video. The film is a true masterpiece.
A good handful of people think of anime as a genre when it’s really just “animation from Japan.” It’s a medium! Every genre under the sun exists within it *somewhere.* It’s really cool to hear that you guys poked around at some recommendations (even if they didn’t end up being your cup of tea) and I’m SUPER glad to see you found something you both liked!! Your Name is absolutely breathtaking
It’s pretty frustrating when people dismiss anime as cartoons. I know that is a very weebish-neckbeardy thing to say perhaps but it’s just a medium, and although some isn’t for everyone there is also live action that isn’t for everyone. That’s just how preferences work. I think Your Name really nails that too because it’s just a really universally good film that transcends genre - you can appreciate the fantastic animation, you can love lots of things that anime fans would appreciate about it but the bottom line is that it’s just a good movie.
Exactly. Calling anime a genre is like calling black and white movies a genre. Oh, you enjoyed that Charlie Chaplin movie? Then you’re gonna love Sin City, it’s in b/w too! 🤣
I agree though even people in Japan including Hayao Miyazaki consider "anime" a genre. I understand people sometimes try to distinguish the difference between animation geared towards an exclusively dramatic presentation vs. something more of a caricature-character-feature the way some people differentiate between animation vs. cartoon but anime is anime. One day there might be a different definition but we aren't quite there yet.
A little translation fact about this movie the Japanese title "Kimi no nawa" translates to "Your Name is?". but it's not an every day phrase it's used when you think you know a person name but aren't sure cause you can't quite see them(like at twilight) Or when you should know some one's name but it escapes you at that moment. It's such a perfect title and it's a real shame it was lost with the English title.
@@likethecheeze321 That's a good recommendation. Oh yeah, Suzume is about to run in our local cinema soon. I'm already excited about this one (I watched Your Name in the theatre too, at least the first time anyway).
@@TikkyNoSurname OMG, i came across Your Name some years ago. I watched on Netflix, at the time they had all Shinkai Movies and the first one i watched was Garden of Words. Beautiful beautiful movie. And very short. Only after i went for You Name and it changed me. This is now my favorite movie officialy. It never loses it's light and don't watch it all the time. i like to wait some time to returm there and feel "oh, thats why i love this so much". I can't conceve how great it was on big screen and i hope i can Watch Suzume here this year.
@@HeitorOliveiraJ That's true. The thing is, I used to think Shinkai was basically Nicholas Sparks in japanese. Because my sister loves Sparks movies, I got her a DVD version of Garden of Words, which I hadn't seen back then, but I saw scenes of it and the glowing reviews, so I thought it would be perfect for her. She really liked, we watched it together and even if Your Name is the movie I could watch anytime, Garden of Words was a beautiful movie. Irony has it, I don't like most Sparks Stories, because they are trying too hard with the drama. Shinkai movies aren't trying, they just hit you accidentally when you lest expect them to.
One thing I love about this movie is that both vocal leads had to play two characters (their character, and the opposite lead in their characters body). Not only are they consistent, but their performances are distinct enough to be able to tell who is in the body on screen just by their voice!
@@doctorcorgi3134 right!? It's such a shame they're losing their roles to more recognizable names nowadays. I hate seeing studios attach random A lists to their voice cast simply to draw more viewership.
I never thought about this, they really had to take on 2 characters at once with the same voice, and subtly make their speech pattern different but keep the sound of the voice the same. Really talented
@@bradbrad247 you made a good point here but fyi in this movie they use pro actor/actress to voice the characters, they’re not even seiyuu in the first place. in conclusion those a list seiyuu still lose their jobs to the pro actor that means this studio and the director just done everything that you comment about; using a famous name to bring the viewerships. kinda ironic here doesn’t it.
One of the things that I've come to love about this movie as well is the quiet mythology that lives in its margins. On the first watching or two, it's easy to just get a surface level read on the scenes with her grandma--she's teaching the traditions of the family, immersing her grandkids in the family history... But she's also subtly explaining that all of this has happened before. She mentions that their shinto temple that they run has a bunch of traditions and practices, but the old temple burned down along with all the writings, so nobody has known for generations WHY they have these traditions. Then we learn that the women of the family have been doing the body-swap thing, from Mitsuha to her mom to her grandma. We see that the traditional sake can put you in touch with someone you switched with. We see that not only is the holy of holies a crater, but on the ceiling the comet is painted. And the braided cords the family makes are a) a phenomenal use of a Japanese trope, the red string of fate, but also they allow you to better keep your memories of when you switch. It's so beautiful.
Fun fact, when they right dummy and idiot on each others faces, it’s actually a dialect thing. People in the countryside of Japan use Baka for idiot, and people in Tokyo specifically use Aho instead. So they aren’t just calling each other stupid, they are correcting each other’s dialect so they will speak properly in the location they are in
I can't believe that even though i've seen this movie several times, read a lot about symbolism in it and stuff - and i still keep finding out new fun facts about it anyway.
It's funny that aho reminds me alot of "asshole" in english. Is that just a coincidence or an expression of Tokyo's place as an international world city?
From what I heard (I think my Japanese teacher told me this) "baka" and "aho" are used in both places, but in Tokyo "baka" is used as a light insult while "aho" is a more serious insult - and vice-versa in the Kansai region (Ōsaka, Kyoto etc.) and possibly the country side, where "aho" is a lighter insult than "baka". So for me I thought its kinda sweet that although they write these words on their cheeks they do it in a playful manner :)
A fun fact about the ending is that; Makoto Shinkai the creator a few years back did another movie with a very similar ending sequence where the leads sort of pass eachother by and then rush to find the other person, yet at the end they just walk by without saying anything (which fits the theme of that film, that is sort of the opposite of this one but just as good) and watching this for the first time the fear that they will miss eachother as well is just 10 times more deep.
Indeed I vividly recalling sitting in the cinema watching Your Name for the first time, knowing how 5CM a Second ended and muttering under my breath “Don’t you do it Shinkai, don’t you dare. Don’t take this from me.”
Yeah, there are animes like Paprika and Perfect Blue that are clearly not for kids. Even Ghibli movies have themes that are very difficult for kids to understand, like Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke
You'll find this even more interesting if you watch explanations of the elements used in the story - how the god they've been referring to, the red string of fate or Mitsuha's hair tie, the wine/sake she drank, the dance on the ritual, all connects to the story. My fave is how Mitsuha's hair tie metaphors time. It's made by connecting, separating, and reconnecting the threads just like how the lead characters timeline intertwined with each other. 🤧
If you also watch Shinkai's other film, you will also find parallels between Your Name and them. Trains, rain/snows, seperated by time, and maybe some other things I forgot

Wolf Children is one of my favorite anime movies, and it could be a great one to do for Mother's Day! It high-key had me ugly crying. Fantastic story about life as a single mother, and it talks about raising children, grief over a lost love, watching your children grow up and eventually leave you, and trusting them to be okay!
YES! Wolf children was such a formative piece for me, cried like an absolute lunatic over it, and the film is so beautiful too I absolutely recommend it
If you want a psychologically deeper anime movie to do next, please do The Boy and the Beast. It deals with the loss of a parent, abandonment, surrogate/found families from the point of view of the child in a very light, magical, Pixar way.
anything by mamoru hosoda is a good candidate for an episode of cinema therapy honestly! (like wolf children, time-travelling girl, belle) even the one piece movie he made, that one is… special.
Big note for the dub that made me love it is that Radwimps is bilingual and actually did all the lyrical songs in english too which for me adds so much to those moments like her seeing his message.
As a child of a single mother, Wolf Children really hits different. It's really good, realistic and emotional. Also, if you want a gut-punching anime film, go watch Grave of the Fireflies. It's a Studio Ghibli film but man was it so different to the usual feel good movies they make. I believe it was first shown back to back with Totoro in US because of how heavy it is. This is a must watch for everyone. You'll come out as a totally different person and your life is changed forever. Your whole perspective is just altered. It's so memorable I still find myself thinking about it a decade after I watched it (I never rewatched it again because I just can't).
Wolf chinldren is definitly worth to watch.. I just love that movie ❤️.. And I would also recomended A whisker away, Naushika from the walley of the wind and from chinese production The Legend of Hei
Grave of the fireflies is by far the saddest movie I have ever watched. I watched it once and cannot muster the heart to do so again. I bawled more than hard.
That moment with Mitsuha opening her hand to try and remember Taki's name brings me to tears every time. It's not just the beautiful music, it's not just the struggle of trying to save her village against all odds that we saw in the previous scenes, it's not just the stellar animation, the background, the voice acting that made it all happen. It's just that at that moment when they were writing their names on each other's hands, it's the culmination of them trying so hard to meet each other and they only had a couple of minutes of twilight to say everything they need to say, the most important things cuz they possibly won't have another chance to meet each other, so writing each other's names would help them find each other and they know that they gotta do it asap. What could possibly be more important than doing that at that moment? Saying that you love that person. Taki felt that making sure that Mitsuha knows that he loves her was worth more than helping her find him in the future, which is a stupid thing to do really, of course, he is jeopardizing losing the connection he has with her. But at that moment, all that was important to Taki is to show that all that happened to them with their body-swapping, this entire experience was the best thing that happened to him. That finding her through this incredible twist of faith and getting to know her made his life all that more richer and that he loves her for that. Damn
Something that non-japanese native would miss is that Mitsuha was also going to write "I Love You" on Taki's hand. The first stroke would've been very different had she meant to write her name instead. Without saying it out loud, the movie show us how connected their mind were at that moment.
I would highly recommend "Wolf Children" both the sub and dub are fantastic and the story centered around Hana's motherhood and children caught in between worlds and learning to grow up together even if they choose different paths is utterly phenomenal!
Something that I keep coming back to, that I love you guys experiencing, is that animation isn't a genre--it's a medium. Anime in particular is viewed through such a specific lens in Western culture, and I cannot begin to tell y'all at this channel how much I appreciate the venture into these movies!! It's such a unique expression/art-form and deserves the appreciation that you have certainly given it. Thank you!
I feel like "I want to eat your pancreas" (kimi no suizou wo tabetai) is really undertalked and deserves an opportunity to be reviewed by you two guys. It is such a heavy, bittesweet, and tearjerking drama but also very very heartwarming. Even when it straightforward tells you what you have to brace for, it still catches you off guard, just like life itself. I really really recommend it.
I went into this movie blind when I was on a big anime movie binge and a local theater had a premier for it that I watched with only like 5 other people in the audience, it struck me so hard and it was even harder when I picked up the book
Yes a know due to time limitations they can’t watch long anime but there are lots of good films and perhaps short anime with 12-20 something episodes. I would recommend “Ranking of the Kings”
18:00 You hit the nail on the head about Mitsuha “laughing through her tears”, but what I also really love about this scene is the message it delivers: Instead of writing his name, Taki chose to tell Mitsuha something even more important, and by doing this he expressed: “This is not about me, this is about you. It’s not important who _I_ am, but how special _you_ are to me.” And despite being unable to remember his name, that’s what ultimately gives her the strength to stand up to her father, to save her village, to survive. Surely you could argue that this was not what he had in mind when doing so, that it was just a teenage boy’s whimsical idea, but even then, sometimes a man ought to be a little stupid in order to make a smart decision... if that makes any sense. ---------------------- You do realize that by asking for more anime suggestions you literally opened Pandora’s box, right? Well then... I agree with the suggestions to watch “Wolf Children” (likely a must-watch for every single parent) and “Howl’s Moving Castle”, and of course Hayao Miyazaki’s two most popular films “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke” are always worth it - you could make three videos about the latter (including a “Psychology of a Hero” and a “Villain Therapy”) and it wouldn’t get boring. Furthermore, after you’ve already done Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”, it would just be proper to do Mamoru Hosoda’s “Belle” which is on one hand one gigantic tribute to the Disney movie but on the other hand still tells an original, quite heartwarming story about a teenage girl having to cope with a tragic loss and how she (literally) finds her voice again, while it’s also picking on certain aspects of modern internet culture. And especially from a filmmaker’s perspective I would recommend all works by Satoshi Kon, most notably “Paprika” for its ingenious depiction of dreams (to me basically the better “Inception”). When it comes to having another “therapy session”, “Perfect Blue” with its story about stalking, toxic fan culture, psychological terror and harassment, rendering the protagonist (and the viewers) increasingly unable to distinguish reality from imagination, might be just your thing, one of the darkest anime films out there, but truly good stuff, and, released in 1997, already relevant back then and yet way ahead of its time.
THIS!! That's just the reason why I started bawling like crazy when I saw that scene for the first time😭😭 It's him saying: "I'm not important, but what IS important is that I love you!"
I fully endorse your suggested anime films. Wolf Children: The story of a heroic widowed mother raising her two werewolf children (in a world where werewolves are misunderstood), trying to keep their secret. Their is a interesting take in it on child psychology. Howl's Moving Castle: Rumors, gossip, and perception vs the truth. The home life of a wizard. Slowly falling in love. Spirited Away: A child in learns courage and humbles their ego in mystical adventure and personal trial. One character embodies loneliness and their struggle for acceptance getting lost in others greed. Princess Mononoke: A dying man cursed by hate, observes a conflict of man vs man and man vs nature where there is no true villain just multiple people trying to get by in their messed up world.
Chiming in with another vote for Grave of the Fireflies. It's older so not going to be as visually stunning as Your Name, but the story of siblings trying to survive in WWII Japan is real, raw and heartbreaking.
Oh man. I can never watch that movie again. That movie is so NSFL. I was crushed for months after seeing it. Probably would be destroyed worse now that I am a parent.
I remember not liking the live action version except for one scene at the end. The live action version gives us something the animated version never did, condemning the actions of their aunt. Never have I felt so justified. like *YES TELL HER AGAIN LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK* levels of satisfaction. I wasn't an aunt when I first saw it, but I am now. I can't watch that movie, I could never allow that to happen to my niece. I'd rather die a painful death than do what she did.
Someone else mentioned this one as well, but I have to second "Tokyo Godfathers" by Satoshi Kon. Kon is an absolutely masterclass storyteller who died way before his time but knew how to write incredibly believable characters of all ages, often focusing on those downtrodden or outcast by society. Tokyo Godfathers is a movie about three homeless people who find a newborn on Christmas Eve and work together to return her to her parents, while also delving into the grief in each of their own lives, how they ended up where they are. It's a story that illuminates how each person truly has an incredible story, if they're only given the space to tell it. Kon's stories are a lot less child and teenager friendly (frankly not child friendly at all) than Shinkai or Miyazaki films, but I also find them a little more relatable as an adult. Another beautiful film by him is "Millenium Actress".
YES, so glad you suggested this. Satoshi Kon is a genius and all of his movies are insanely detailed. Since Tokyo Godfathers takes place around Christmas so it's practically a holiday movie. Perhaps it should be featured in a holiday special on this channel huehue
YES! Kon is amazing and Tokyo Godfathers is just INCREDIBLE, it's my favourite of his, but maybe partly just because it was my introduction to his work. I fully recommend it to everyone you though, beautiful story about found family, love and redeeming yourself - not just to others but most importantly for yourself.
The soundtrack helps too. Even with the language barrier you’ll feel the notes and what they’re trying to convey. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.
They need to review Ame and Yuki the wolf children. It is a beautiful movie and it tackles so many important stuff. Talks about being a single parent, raising your kids to be who they want to be, dealing with being born with an anormality, dealing with the grief of losing a loved one too. And it will just leave you in tears in the end x)
"Howls Moving Castle" or anything by Miyazaki. The quality of the animation, the emotions and reactions of the people, will make you a fan of his work instantly. Also, "Your Lie in April". Stunning.
We're going to go through all the Miyazaki films. They're too good to ignore! They do go after you on copyright, but we have a very good copyright lawyer.
@@CinemaTherapyShow if you get past the copyright PLEASEEE my favourite is kiki’s delivery service!!! - a beautiful story that equates passion, purpose and even burnout to kiki’s experience with her witches powers. Such a beautiful and wholesome story ❤️
The movie is the embodiment of Makoto Shinkai's love for animation. I love how when the "camera" pans around corners, the light dims like there's a camera with a shutter. I have to constantly remind myself that there is no camera.
I think the Japanese title is also a play on words! Kimi no na wa 君の名は means (Your name/ Your name is/ And your name is?) and the word nawa means rope 縄 or cord. referencing the bonds between them. The thread of destiny. Also reference by the traditional cord weaving you see in the movie! So kimi no na wa can mean your name or your rope/ bond.
The discussion of the local deity protecting the village through fate and time is born out by the story. I took their body switching to have been the result of the deity's intervention, but only slight. It was up to the characters to eventually understand what they could do with it, saving the village and coming to know each other at the same time.
Well, the cord is red as a symbol of the fate's cord between people (more often between lovers). It is being exchanged between the characters for this reason, and this is another reason there is such an emphasis on them tying their hairs with it in Mitsuha's body. It is absolutely not a subtle symbolism, but Japanese love their red string of destiny. :)
“Wolfs children” would be a wonderful next entry, the movie is about sibling relationships and a strong mother figure trying to do her best with children that have “a part of them that she can’t understand” it can be taken literally or figuratively and it’s a really pretty and hard hitting movie. Also the thing about “Your Name” that isn’t seen so much is the way Trans folks related to the characters, you talked about the characters being “more confident” in the other ones skin and well the whole scene of the girl character screaming “I wanna be a hot guy living on Tokyo” among other stuff really resonated hard with the Trans community. Also seeing it from that perspective the ending could be taken metaphorically as them finally seeing who they want to be and asking for their name. Just wanted to drop this little piece of info since this movie broke the eggshell of lots of trans folks (myself included haha)
I love seeing the movie through this lens but I think the "I wanna be a hot guy in Tokyo" was a mistranslation at least that's what I saw other people saying and that what she really said was "I want to be a city girl in my next life"
I think the part that is important when Mitsuha opens her hand to see Taki wrote "I love you" instead of his name is that his name didn't matter. Mitsuha don't need to know his name in that moment, what she needed to know is that someone, somewhere, wanted her to survive, to fight, to go forward. His name was unsignificant. A detail. Taki not only confessed his feelings to her but also saved her life in every way. This film is really one of my all time favorite, everything about it is beautiful. If you haven't yet, I think you should watch AKIRA. Katsuhiro Otomo masterpiece that Americans actually wanted to adapt really bad but still thankfully hadn't, lol #DontTouchAkira It's very very different but Akira influenced so many both in filmaking and storytelling, will it be for anime or live action that I think it's an important watch.
I have to say that Wolf Children would be amazing for you to go over. It's not only a lovely story of a single parent, but it's also deeply emotional and has many things you could go over.
The director of this film, Makoto Shinkai, has created 2 more films since this. “Weathering with you”which I believe is already available in US and “Suzume” which is in the theaters right now in Japan, should be coming to US shortly. Highly recommend both films! Particularly I’m sure Suzume will have you both balling in tears.
Your Name definitely deserves the popularity it's gotten, and I can't say that for a lot of anime or live films. As a writer, myself, what gets me about storytelling is when it makes you feel emotions you never knew you had. In this case it highlights that feeling of missing or longing something that you don't understand or know. A bugging feeling that there is something I want and absolutely desire but idk what that something is. And it's genius for the film to use dramatic irony in that the audience knows exactly that they long for each other but neither the characters understand this, you want to scream at them to give them the answer but you're also painfully aware of what they're feeling and why they don't know of the other. Just thinking about it hurts.
Beautifully made, poignant, emotionally fulfilling, but you also get plenty of laughs, especially when Mitsuha's little sister keeps opening the bedroom door at the worst possible moment.
I would love to recomend "Wolf Children", I like it a lot. It's the story of a family, a human mother and two kind of werewolf children and how she tries to give them their best life and... I think it's a great film to see how children grow and change and also how families are not always perfect even when they really care for eachother.
Others have already dropped their suggestions, would love to second Belle and Wolf Children! Belle is a more recent one about grief and reaching out, while Wolf Children is about motherhood. Both are amazing films!
Thank you for reacting to this amazing movie! According to Makoto Shinkai, one of the inspiration of the plot is a poem by a 9th century poet Ono no Komachi (小野小町), in which the poet wondered if she could meet her loved one in dream if she thought of him while falling asleep; and exclaimed that had she know she was in a dream while meeting her loved one, she would rather not to wake up (思ひつつ寝ればや人の見えつらむ 夢と知りせば覚めざらましを). This poem captures the intertwining of love and dream, which is central to the plot of the movie. Early in the movie, Makoto Shinkai also foreshadowed quite a bit of the plot, though they could be lost to audience who don't speak Japanese. For example, the literature teacher explained that the Japanese word of "evening" (黄昏) derives from "誰そ彼" literally means "Who is he"), before introducing word "かたわれ" (Kataware), which also means "evening" in the fictional local dialect. Kataware can be written as "片割れ", which means "fragment / broken piece". "Who is he" and "fragment (of the comet)" - that's the basis of the plot! The opening song also has quite a lot of foreshadowing too. //Even being teased by the 5th dimension, I'll still look your way, So let's choose our secret sign for when we introduce ourselves again! 'Cause I'm heading out now to chase after your name//
This movie had such a big impact on me that I learned how to speak Japanese, and am planning on moving there to teach English at some point in the future. To be more specific, it was once I learned that the locations in the movie are real. It taught me how to see the beauty in ordinary things.
I second whoever recommended "Violet Evergarden", it is an episode series that also have movie specials (I have not seen the specials), but it might as well be a trilogy movie split in 12. It is graphically a masterpiece, excellently well written and has a ton of material with social interactions that Jonathan will have a lot to say.
I hope they see Violet Evergarden even offcam. It´s a crime to yourself missing KyoAni works when you have the sensibility to enjoy and experience this kind on stories.
For me VE ends at the Auto Memory doll movie coz I hated that development in the last movie. But nothing can take away the fact that VE is such a beautiful series and I love it to bits so for me the last arc doesnt exist. Spoiler** Just cannot accept that a guy who took a kid when she was 9 and practically raised her goes on to marry her. (Even "according to the time standards", yeah people used to marry with huge gaps but thats not the problem. The problem is the man raised her and she was NINE when she was taken in. Developing feelings for a kid you practically raised IS weird)
I really hope that they do watch Violet Evergarden as it showcases the need for grief to heal from loss, and it actually helped me deal with the loss of my last grandparent. To make a sob story brutally short: during my Junior year in undergrad my mom texted me the news of my last and favorite grandparent had passed away, I boxed up my emotions as I had midterm exams coming up and soldiered on as an emotionally inert husk as I didn't know how to, nor wanted to, deal with my grief. Fast forward 5 days I watch he newly released episode of VE where Violet ghostwrites for the mother to her daughter, to which the box full of my emotions fell into my lap and made me deal with them. 24 hours later, I was hanging out with my buddies and they commented that life had returned to my eyes, even if they could now see my grief through them. So yeah, VE holds a deeply painful but dear place in my heart as it was the catalyst to dealing with my own grief and growth as a person much like Violet.
Cannot recommend Weathering With You enough. Same director, art style, and music style. Beautiful story and voice acting that hits such strong emotional beats, can't watch it without crying. To follow that up, Belle is another visual, musical and narrative masterpiece of a film with one of the most emotional realization moments for the protagonist and audience I have experienced from an anime. Love what you guys do and am very happy to see you reacting the same way as I did to one of my anime favorite films.
Weathering With You in my opinion is one of the best anime movies I've watched. Would highly recommend these guys to watch it, I even have the three tomes of the manga that came out.
Yeah, baby!!!! They MUST watch "Belle"!!! It's a movie so packed with real, daily life isues. More over in this so connected world full of social networks and all the benefits along the negative aspects it brings.
I would love if you guys did an episode on Wolf Children. It's another really amazing anime movie. Its about love and loss and family and follows this mother trying to raise of two children who can turn into wolves. So there's a fantastical element to it, but its really grounded and beautiful and I guarantee Alan's gonna cry.
Movies and works like this just make me respect artistry so much. Everything from the concept to the execution of a piece like this is done on such a high level. The decisions made for every little shot, every music choice, every frame, and every line that was delivered by the actors feel intentional and conceptualized and I can't even conceive of the level of talent required to make it happen.
"Your Name" is definitely a "watch it twice" film, similar to "When Marnie Was There." The first time, you watch it for the suspense and the huge "reveal." The second time, you watch it so you can fully appreciate what's going on now that you know what's going on. The Japanese seem to be masters at making a "no true antagonist" story which is interesting and engaging for the audience. Edit to add, you'll probably cry more while watching When Marnie Was There the second time through than you did the first time. Edit again: I can't believe that you've never reviewed When Marnie Was There! Review it! You'll be so glad you did! Brief, non-spoiler summary: Anna is a young girl who has stress-triggered asthma. She's orphaned and lives with a kind foster-mother, but she feels like she's "outside" the "magic circle" which encloses everyone else. Because of Anna's health, her foster-mother sends Anna to stay with relatives in the country who live near a tidal lake. While there, Anna discovers that a seemingly empty house on the other side of the lake occasionally has a beautiful young girl named Marnie living there who is Anna's age, along with servants and rich parents. A mystery arises, which is never fully resolved. Who is Marnie and why is it that when Anna tries to talk to Marnie about Anna's past, Marnie seems to somehow vanish as though she never was there? Even though the mystery is never fully solved, the explanation of who Marnie is, is heartbreaking, and all the more so because of the link between them. All the same, what Anna learns helps her to come to terms with her grief over losing her parents, and she is better off for having known Marnie.
Twice? more than 10 times maybe? lol. As a script writer myself, i did that with some movies and your name definitely in the list. And yes, no true antagonist... i like that you point it out...
One of the anime films that I still hold very close to my heart is Wolf's Children. It's truly a very heartwarming story about parenthood, growing up, and finding your own path. It's one of the anime I wanted to watch with my mom to see her reaction.
Was the first film I thought of when they asked for other suggestions too! Your Name and Wolf Children are probably some of my favorite anime films that I've ever watched
This might legit be my favourite movie. Whenever I think about it I can't think of any movie that would be better. I'm glad you appreciate it as much as it deserves.
This movie is so important to me! When I first saw it back in 2017, it reminded me of a friend of mine whom I had drifted apart from. I didn’t understand why it reminded me so much of that person, when they were barely even in my life. I remember thinking, “I used to think we had a bond like theirs, but I must’ve been wrong.” About 3 years later, we learned that we only drifted apart due to a misunderstanding that was accidentally caused by someone else. And when I looked at the poster of this movie that my brother gave me on one of my previous birthday’s, it felt lovely to think, “Who knew I was actually right the entire time? We actually did share a bond like Taki and Mitsuha’s, and I wasn’t wrong or delusional for thinking it!” It was a blessing for us to reconnect, and I honestly think it saved my life. I’m grateful for it every day!
That’s such a beautiful story, makes me really believe in the idea of people's lives intertwining... I also have a very deep bond with a friend of mine, and it makes me really happy to hear more stories like this from other people! Inspiring :>
Do you guys still talk to each other? There's a childhood friend I had back in elementary school but something caused us to drift apart and I'm not sure why. I'm scared to send a message and talk but it's been years and years since. I'm 18 and a social mess so I don't know what to do..
@@buddersib_ We still talk! And if I’d never reached out to him, we’d never have figured out why we drifted apart, or found out it was all a huge misunderstanding. Maybe it’s worth a shot for you too!
I also want to suggest Wolf Children. Anything by Mamoru Hosada is fantastic, but I think Wolf Children would be especially perfect because of the family dynamics and how different both kids are.
The fact that you put in a clip of the ATLA live action when Alan said, "Let me ruin it!" had me DYING! IT'S SO FREAKING TRUE, THOUGH! ATLA is one of my favorite shows EVER, and yet, it HURTS that the live action RUINED IT SO SPECTACULARLY! X'D Now, about this vid's movie, I have never seen 'Your Name' despite hearing about it CONSTANTLY, lol, but WOW! Now I want to see it! lol. LOVE this!
Your Name is an incredible film and being an anime fan from the 80's this is near the top of my list of all time favorites. It's so rewatchable as well. I'm sure someone else mentioned it but the reason why the message Taki wrote didn't disappear like all the texts and stuff is because in Japanese folklore, messages of love don't fade. IF Taki wrote his name, that would have disappeared. Great that you guys have seen this and I hope you delve into some more anime. I don't have any that would really fit the format of the show, off the top of my head but I'll try and think of some. It's too bad you didn't have a spoiler warning before hand because I felt the twist of the time difference was incredible. Almost as good as the twist in The Sixth Sense.
It's near impossible to not be moved by Your Name, I remember the first time watching it with a friend- we were clutching each other and crying hard and immediately wanted to rewatch it. I think you both should give The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tokyo Godfathers, and Millenium Actress a watch. One is a coming-of-age, slice of life tale about a teen girl who finds a time machine and the consequences of using it frivolously. The second is dark, heartwarming Xmas story of three homeless friends who find/rescue a baby and their journey of finding her parents and also their own personal conflicts both on the street and facing the events that led them to where they are now. The last is a sliding genre tale of an interview with an iconic actress and following her life story through the movie roles she played.
There is a lesser known anime named Paprika, which has great visuals. It's basically about dream walking and was an inspiration to Inception. The protagonist is also a therapist who uses a device to enter her patient's dreams in order to treat them. I think that could be really interesting for you to cover.
I wouldn't call it 'lesser known', it's Satoshi Kon, a legendary anime director. He's great and any of his films are worth watching. To the Cinema Therapy guys, I'd also highly recommend 'Tokyo Godfathers' from the same director. It deals with homelessness, depression, guilt, marginalization, and the importance of family, found or otherwise. It's also a very touching Christmas movie which you just don't see much from anime.
That's just because it's older, like Tokyo Godfathers. And so I agree that it is lesser known to younger weebs and people outside our little anime and manga bubble. It has not been that long anime gets more recognized by western audiences.
I second Paprika because of the psychology/therapy angle as well as the overt filmmaking knowledge. Both Jonathan and Alan can speak to the accuracy of that information!
@@KateBerger Don't forget his other pyscho thriller Perfect Blue. Satoshi Kon is famous for his picture within a picture, scene within a scene style both evident in Perfect Blue and Paprika. Makes you wonder is this a dream or reality, is this perceived anxiety or reality.
This is probably my favorite movie, my reaction was the same when I first saw it. It's absolute perfection. Keeps you so engaged the whole time and you just don't see the twists and turns coming! I made everyone I know watch it without hesitation lol
Both of you would really enjoy Wolf Children (2012), it's a great story about a single mom who tries to raise her two children with a bit of a fantasy twist. It's really emotional and moving!
T H I S. Yes, this is good. Please, it was so emotional and can also tap into what kids are like growing up. Their changes and behavior, especially in a mother's point of view and how the mom grows too!
I love how you mentioned the way you went from “well its an anime for kids” to “ok this is my favorite movie” because a lot of people see anime in the same light as western cartoons where theyre just meant for kids, but in reality anime is just a vessel for storytelling that allows them to do way more than is possible in a live action setting. Some are certainly for kids but theres plenty of anime with complicated and dark themes that are meant for adults to watch and analyze. Great video!
Something I thought was really cool was that Taki and Mitsuha show up in the background of another animated movie called "Weathering With You" and it is clear they're a couple and are together. A lot of folks in the comments have recommended "Wolf Children" as another animated movie to look at, and I want to join my voice to that. It's a great look at not only how difficult it is to be a single parent, but how hard it can be to connect to your children as they age and grow in ways you may not understand, and also how eventually you have to trust them to make their own decisions, accepting you've done the best you can. It made me emotional when I first watched it, and then when I became a mom and watched it again it broke me entirely.
I've never wanted to have kids and watched this movie in high school - it broke me even then. I need to rewatch it but haven't had the courage lol! Absolutely agree - it is a masterpiece and would be a fun one for them to check out. (Well.... fun being subjective :D)
The story and artwork combined with the soundtrack are so powerful that even just listening to the music causes my emotions to flood forth as the memories are pulled forcibly out of my soul. One of the best movies this old dude has ever watched and cried to.
I think mamoru hosada is the only major anime director you haven’t explored yet - the girl who lept through time and Wolf Children are two incredible choices!
"5 centimeters per second" would be a great react. Its more grounded and almost no sci-fi and tells a story about boy and a girl from childhood to adulthood. Any movie from Makoto Shinkai is worth a react. He has one of the most stellar filmographies in the Japanese film industry.
I'd honestly love to see what Alan and Jono think of both Wolf Children and Perfect Blue. One is a loving portrait of single parenthood chronicling the extent to which a parent will go in order to give their children the best life they can, the other a painfully dark look into pop figure deification, obsession, jealousy, and paranoia that has inspired various other Hollywood films. I believe they might have mentioned Perfect Blue once, but seeing a full rundown of what they think about it would be super cool.
You can't go wrong with any Makoto Shinkai film. Suzume just released, but you've got 5 Centimeters Per Second, Weathering With You, Garden of Words, etc. Each one takes you on such a journey. The 3 I named, outside of the obvious 'Your Name', are my favorites. 5 Centimeters Per Second has left an emotional scar on me whenever I see a train.
I definitely suggest Wolf Children and Josee the Tiger and the Fish. They both have a similar feel while still capturing their own unique story and I would LOVE to see them be reviewed.
Also something interesting is that there is only a horizontal line on Taki's hand when the twilight hour ends. But in a previous scene in the movie, Mitsuha writes her name vertical line first. This means that whatever Mitsuha tried to write wasn't her name. Perhaps she also tried to write 'I love you' like Taki did. So when you see her crying after seeing the 'I love you' on her hand, she isn't crying because Taki is stupid. When she opens her hands, she's trying so desperately hard to remember Taki who has nearly faded from her memories. And she's crying because she momentarily remembers that this person loves her and she loves him, but no matter how hard she tries she will ultimately forget him.
I missed that seeing as I don't know Japanese, but I am now remembering that certain characters are drawn in a certain order, so it makes sense that it wouldn't be her name. I missed that detail, that would hit hard for someone who gets it on first watch
Oh yes it is beautiful. I watched it this yeat and I loved it. Every Song, every moment EVERYTHING was amazing. And the Endingen...geeze... Also EVERY dub I heard was amazing. I watched it in german and wow
@@austinsinger7565 I do love this movie, but I see it this way. It's 1 part Summer Wars. 1 part Beauty and The Beast and one part Didn't see that coming. That last bit is what saves the film.
I really wish you guys covered the scene where Mitsuha was surprised to see her tears in the mirror when Taki went on a date, but maybe that was on the Patreon extended version. Great video though, thank you for covering this movie!
You asked, I give. Wolf Children was the first anime movie I ever watched and it is tied as my favorite with A Silent Voice (thank you for doing that one BTW🤩). The visuals aren't as stunning as your name, although it does have its moments, but the story is beautiful and down to earth, even though is revolves around children that can turn into wolves. I rarely cry during movies but this one got me going. I LOVE IT, so please do it!
I second this film choice, could also be a great parent-child analysis video, loved the way she took to handling each kid’s special needs an wants, taking into consideration their unique circumstances
Yesyesyes, absolutely! It's got so much to admire from animation, story, cinema AND therapy! I adore it and would definitely love to see these guys check it out
It's amazing how it's been YEARS since I last watched this movie and I still cried while watching your video. The emotions within me of when I watched it for the first time are still so vivid and deeply engraved in my brain, they just kick in, even if I only watched the snippets.
I just watched it today and had to blink away some happy tears in the end. Still remember when I went to watch that movie with my whole uni course - we all cried. Some more, some less, but there were tears everywhere. This time I watched with my mother. Her reaction? Looking at my father's photo and smiling when they revealed the body swap. That, and: "Look at the food. It's the second star in this movie!" lol
All the movies by this director/animator are really nice and interesting. Garden of Words is very mature story about relationships and finding purpose in work. Five Centimeters per Second is (in my vision) the predecessor of Your Name, but with a bittersweet ending. Children who chase lost voices is a fantastic story about Grief, he was still getting the hang of directing a story and it's narrative may seem all over the place, but the visuals are just as stunning.
I agree with this statement "Five Centimeters per Second is (in my vision) the predecessor of Your Name, but with a bittersweet ending." For me, its just a bit more in touch with the reality of what happens to relationship through time.
Thanks a lot for reacting to Your Name! If you're into exploring the depths of human emotions and appreciating stunning visual storytelling, "Violet Evergarden" is an anime you shouldn’t miss. You'd be drawn to mc's journey of self-discovery and healing post-war, mirroring the therapeutic process many undergo. It does a brilliant job at delving into empathy, self-acceptance, and resilience in the face of trauma. Filmmaking-wise, I think the storytelling is so well-intertwined with breathtaking animation (really is!) and riveting musical scores. Also, the narrative arcs are so precisely crafted with each episode building onto the mc’s larger emotive tapestry. Highly recommend for both of you!
I'm so happy that you guys loved Your Name! Continuing on with the sci-fi and time travel theme, I would recommend watching "Mirai", where a young boy who was used to the attention he got since his birth, felt forgotten after the arrival of his little sister. After being fed up, he discovers a passage in their garden that can travel through time and encountered familiar people but in a different timeline which helped him change his perspective. I would also like to add "Hello World" where a man from 2027 travels through time to find his younger self and correct a past mistake. The plot twist really got me and I promise you that the title of the anime would make sense in the end.
I love Mirari!! I would totally recommend that movie too! You'd all love it! It was such a surprise when I watched it and wish we could encounter those time swaps to give each other those kinds of second chances and change of perspective into a new future. Ugh, I cried so much watching this! THanks guys!
A few things you probably missed: 1) You remember the beginning (and the end too) where they talk about having a dream as if something's missing as they get ready for work? Notice how after they wipe their tears they stop to look at their hands... It's the same hand they tried to write each other's name on 2) In China and Japan there is an idea of an invisible red string connecting two destined lovers. Hence symbology of the string. There are other colors on the ribbon that represent other things too. The center white diagonal stripe symbolizing the comet, the blue around it for the lake(s), etc. 3) There's also this big thing about how the god their family worship is actually a fraction of the comet that's given their family powers to save the village. That's how they have the dance and the tradition to honor their god. The comet actually came at least twice before. To make the lake and the god's underworld shrine. Both times also created craters. So the god is actually the comet and gave the family the power to save it's people 4) And the BIG Whopper. Mitsuha wasn't going to write her name on Taki's hand. You see her start to write from left to right in a straight line, here's the many ways you can write her name, but the way she actually writes her name is with a curved stoke, not a straight one. It's seen when at the end of the first day mistuha is in taki's body. She writes on his body (his hand) her own name and begins it with a curved stroke similar to a reverse C. Instead, it's likely she was going to write sukida or すきだ. While you likely don't recognize it, it's actually in the movie. You can see it on your clip at 17:58 😥 And yes, the director/writer, Makoto Shinkai did comment that mitsuha would have written something else other than her name in a Q&A 😥😥😥
@@RGC_animation we'll never know for sure, but it was said that it was more important for her at that point to convey her feelings. Maybe she knew the magic would erase her name, maybe she was concerned about leaving him with survivor's guilt if the plan fails, maybe she just wanted to write suki da first and was going to write her name after. we'll never know
Your Name really is Makoto Shinkai's masterpiece. His other works miss the mark for me, but this one - as you said - just gets it right. It's a story that shouldn't work and probably doesn't work on paper, but in practice it magically does. Others have mentioned Wolf Children, and I'll throw in my recommendation for that too. It is, in my opinion, the best film that Mamoru Hosoda has ever made and also is a story that shouldn't work as well as it does. Its take on motherhood would be a really interesting discussion.
Your Name is my all time favourite and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I tear up everytime when Sparkle starts playing and that scene has a way to brutally rip through your emotions. I honestly watched it in dubbed and I loved it and it's done so well. Absolutely amazing break down and really appreciated this video!
Mirai! As a father of two small children, I would really love to see you guys make an episode about Mirai. It's a film about a 5 year old boy struggling to come to terms with the arrival of his baby sister. A child psychology and development gold mine. And the parenting depicted in the film is really interesting. I'd love to hear your take on it.
I absolutely love anime and it's wonderful seeing people of all ages enjoying it. I want to recommend Wolf Children. It is story about a mother's journey to raising two childrens divided between their humans and wolf side. As a father it really struck a chord in me because it represented the hardships of a parent and a single mother.
I was a new mom when I first watched Wolf children. I sobbed through almost the entire movie. The idea of losing my spouse and being a single parent terrified me then (it still does)
Would love to see an episode on wolf children, it deals a lot with family and a single mom raising her (wolf) children. You've done some stuff about family before, would be interesting to hear what you have to say about this one. Great video as always :] 👍
I've been wanting them to review "I want to eat your pancreas". But wolf children is also a banger of a movie! I would be happy if either gets revewed.
I really recommend Wolf Children! It's such a great anime movie, and I think can be enjoyed by a lot of people not just anime fans. It has a similar vibe in terms of emotions like Your Name, but instead of focusing on a romantic story is more about a familiar love and growth and acceptance. I think you could really enjoy it and maybe find it more relatable to you because of the themes that brings.
Considering how much you enjoyed 'Your Name', you absolutely MUST watch 'Weathering With You'. Same Director, same breathtaking beauty and a few sneaky cameos from our favorite characters in 'Your Name'. I cannot recommend it enough.
_Weathering with You_ is very good, but not on the same level as _Your Name_ which is a masterpiece of masterpieces. If you liked _Weathering with You,_ keep an eye out for _Josie the Tiger and the Fish._ It's different from but similar to _A Silent Voice._
As far as anime movies go, Makoto Shinkai has The Garden of Words, and Weathering With You. However I would also recommend a lot of the Mamoru Hosoda movies as they center around topics relating to family: Wolf Children - about motherhood The Boy and the Beast - about fatherhood Summer Wars - about large and extended families and your place in them/the world Mirai of the Future - about being siblings (and the older one moslty)
I must say, I come back numerous times over to see this intro.. the editing with the music is amazing… “This is my favourite movie now, A masterclass in Film Making… *DUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUH*…” and all the best bits of what they say throughout the video along with the epic guitar riff and drums…🔥 50 Sensational Seconds 🔥
Ooooooh my goodness I didn't think of that! That's genius!! This movie is so dang beautiful. :,)
Beautiful 😭🤧💖
I remember seeing this ages ago, but apparently the character Mitsuha was starting to write on Taki's hand doesn't match what her name would be, but it does match the character for "I love you"
Omg why am I so dumb and so angry at him. I completely did not make the connection. I was so furious with him doing that thinking maybe she could find him again. It didn't occur to me that it would be erased too like the phone entries.
@@frostfang1 its okay. I felt the same too. I did not know about not directly writing the name thing until this comment came up.
@@Sojo214 Whethering with you was nice and i’ll say the side characters were more entertaining than Your Name but idk, SPOILER
I didn’t really like the bittersweet ending.
@@Sojo214 and it has cameos of both Taki and Mitsuha.
The biggest part of Mitsuha's "laughter through tears" is that she was going to write the same thing. She was starting to write the characters for "I love you" as well. That's part of why she laughed.
I didn't know that 😭😭😭😭

oh my god :(
I mean the first stroke was horizontal so it could've been for the su of suki written the way Taki wrote it, or the first stroke of the name Mitsuha. I think it is purposefully ambiguous tho
12:01 love how you can see Mitsuha running more "boyishly" and Taki running more "girlishly" because they switched bodies
Interestingly there is exactly one scene where I couldn't tell on first watching who was who. That one being where the grandma, sibling and Mitsuha deposited the sake. I was only able to tell in hindsight it was Taki, since he had no other way of knowing of the sake.
@hellboy19991
The boob grab and Taki thinking "half of mitsuha" wasn't enough? Also the lack of ribbon
I remember hearing someone say "Miyazaki makes the magical feel like the everyday while Shinkai makes the everyday feel magical" and I think this film is a great example of that
I kinda disagreed with it, it's not like Miyazaki cannot make every day feel magical like in The Wind Rises. But I love this movie
On a random note just wanted to say your profile photo is awesome. I used to have the same Monet painting as mine as well.

Sadly its not a movie, it's a long series and they clearly have a tight schedule as parents and professionals outside of youtube
Oh this is a lovely insight, I’m so glad you shared it!
That movie is perfect. Just absolutely perfect
@@laurenevam6305 haha I agree, for me it's perfect but nothing is objectively perfect so I wouldn't assume xD
I didn't see you recommended it before and I just wrote the same. It's a film that really touched me some years ago and I still remember with love
Yep, it’s one of the hallmarks of Makoto Shinkai’s films
I lived in Gifu prefecture, which borders Nagano prefecture, where the lake town supposedly is. They recreated Hida (which does exist) beautifully. The lake town doesn't exist, of couise, but does feel like it's authentically part of that Gifu/Nagano area. Supposedly that's where Shinkai Makoto grew up.
A Silent Voice is set in Ogaki, Gifu, and that's also full of nostalgia. The school for the deaf in that movie looks like it was based on the one in Gifu city, where I worked for a bit.
a lot of manga and anime use Real Architecture for reference sometimes therye edited photos to look drawn or even traced
I was basically on and off crying from that moment on!
Glad you guys liked this movie! A cool note about the sharpie-handwriting scene:
Taki wrote "すきだ" (I love you) and Mitsuha wasn't able to finish writing her name...but she actually wasn't going to write her name in the first place.
NO WAY. The writing in this film is so multi-dimensional! Thank you for sharing this!
The writer and director actually confirmed this! She was also going to write "I love you"
Thank you so much for that. I will remember this next time I watch the video
Wow, thank you ver much!!
The first stroke for みつは isn't short but it's absolutely not a straight stroke so you're still correct, it wasn't the hiragana she was going for.
I absolutely love this movie. And the twist that they are also time traveling is done perfectly. Another animated movie you should look at is _Howl's Moving Castle._ It tackles war, conscientious objection, pacifism, self-esteem, and belaying your dreams for family.
Ditto, it's the only movie I can think of which is BOTH a body swap and a time travel film, which definitely spices things up!
This movie makes me bawl every time. I literally shouted "COME ON!" in theater at the last 20s, before they both turned around and said the titular line.
Theeeen came the waterworks. Grown man crying in the corner of the theater, would go again, 10/10.
I think Cinama Therapy said in the past that they've got the Hayao Miyazaki films in their queue. They're probably just going to spread them out.
My favorite Miyazaki film! I agree they need to do this one!
You're so welcome! It's amazing!
yeah it's a great movie...and then there's makoto shinkai who didn't really like his own movie and was confused as to why it was such a big hit🤦

I think Your Name really nails that too because it’s just a really universally good film that transcends genre - you can appreciate the fantastic animation, you can love lots of things that anime fans would appreciate about it but the bottom line is that it’s just a good movie.
some things are just not as good transported in a liveaction movie as it is in animation. Especially if it goes into a fantasy universe
Yes! Thank you! Drives me nuts… it’s like saying you don’t like ‘Art’ because you think Picasso was a bastard…. 🤯
That's cool. Thanks for sharing!
More like "I already know your name but it has escaped me" - that's my opinion

That's true.
Voice actors/actresses are underrated as hell.
@@fafafarawayy well damn look at all the egg on my face
So they aren’t just calling each other stupid, they are correcting each other’s dialect so they will speak properly in the location they are in
I love that, and also realized that Mitsuha called Taki "aho" when they saw eachother 🥲
@@silvanvanderhorst7366 coincidence. Aho is less common in Tokyo. It’s more of a country way of insulting people.

I wonder if they would like Princess Mononoke. I think Alan would, at least. The cinematography and the music are fire.
So true! When you realize this, so many doors open!
“I love you”
The mind may forget, but the heart will always remember
You'll find this even more interesting if you watch explanations of the elements used in the story - how the god they've been referring to, the red string of fate or Mitsuha's hair tie, the wine/sake she drank, the dance on the ritual, all connects to the story. My fave is how Mitsuha's hair tie metaphors time. It's made by connecting, separating, and reconnecting the threads just like how the lead characters timeline intertwined with each other. 🤧
I love that part! It's so deep just like the story
If you also watch Shinkai's other film, you will also find parallels between Your Name and them.

Even as a childfree dude, Wolf Children makes me ugly cry, esp. towards the end.

Grave of the fireflies is so gut punching I literally make a noise when someone mentions it cause of how much that movie made me feel…I cried for DAYS
Damn
Also if taki write his name it will just dissapear like the memo on the phone, cause love is protected by the god in their mythology
@@nya69696 that too probably :)
Something that non-japanese native would miss is that Mitsuha was also going to write "I Love You" on Taki's hand. The first stroke would've been very different had she meant to write her name instead. Without saying it out loud, the movie show us how connected their mind were at that moment.

Thank you!
yes!!! good point! hope that notion of anime changes outside of japan!
I went into this movie blind when I was on a big anime movie binge and a local theater had a premier for it that I watched with only like 5 other people in the audience, it struck me so hard and it was even harder when I picked up the book
yess
Oh man... I also recommend it.
AGREED
----------------------
You do realize that by asking for more anime suggestions you literally opened Pandora’s box, right?
This comment is so important ❤😭
THIS!!
That's just the reason why I started bawling like crazy when I saw that scene for the first time😭😭
It's him saying: "I'm not important, but what IS important is that I love you!"

Every politician in the world should be forced to watch this film once a week, along with “Barefoot Gen”.
It was originally released as a double feature wit My Neighbor Totoro and is based of the directors experience in WWII.
Oh, I just cannot get past the first scene, I used to watch drama, I just cannot nowadays, it is beautiful, tho, the bits I've watched :(
I love the little detail of Mitsuha falling out of Taki's bed since she's used to her bed being lower to the ground
I haven't seen Tokyo Godfathers yet, but I have heard such amazing things about it. Truly amazing things.
Yeeees! ANYTHING by Satoshi Kon! Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo, Godfathers, and Paprika! All four amazing!
YES, so glad you suggested this. Satoshi Kon is a genius and all of his movies are insanely detailed. Since Tokyo Godfathers takes place around Christmas so it's practically a holiday movie. Perhaps it should be featured in a holiday special on this channel huehue
Thank you! Now I know what to watch next 💜
Watched this movie when I was having a hard time at college. Me and two roommates were practically in tears by the end of it. Such a beautiful film.
Aww, likewise, I couldn't stop crying the first time I this film. 😿
ohh literally same happened to me with my roommates at collage, we also cried rivers..
Any movie from these creators is so deep and amazing. Wolf Children, Boy and the Beast, and Belle also address super difficult topics beautifully.
I saw the Boy and the Beast shortly after my dad died and it hit my like a ton of bricks. Straight ugly crying
@@kanpai44 Ouch! I saw Wolf Children after becoming a new mom. Same results! 🤣
Those movies you listed are Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Madhouse.
Your Name is Makoto Shinkai and CoMix Wave Films. :V
Boy and the Beast was kinda lacking but the rest yeah definitely
@@Zelkiiro Thank you for the correction!
The soundtrack helps too. Even with the language barrier you’ll feel the notes and what they’re trying to convey. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.
The girl who leapt through time could definitely be good for you guys! A great animated movie won a lot of awards
just adore it!
I was totally gonna say this one too I really enjoyed that film!
Yeeees. Love that movie. Love the mom. Very nice.
Man that movie made me bawl my eyes out omfg
YES ABSOLUTELY! That film completely pulled on my heartstrings, it was incredible
Please don't, I cried enough the first time I watched it.
I commented for Wolf Children too! It's so good!
"Howls Moving Castle" or anything by Miyazaki. The quality of the animation, the emotions and reactions of the people, will make you a fan of his work instantly. Also, "Your Lie in April". Stunning.
Second this, but miyazaki is notorious for copyright strikes, so i wouldn't hold my breath
KimiUso/Your Lie will destroy you. Bring tissues.
Your Lie In April is devastating haha!! But there is a lot of psychology to look at!
Referencing the red string of fate mythos
@@TacticalKiwi4862 その通り!
This is amazing info, thank you so much! Identity, our ego, our name does bind us, it defines us and thus inevitably limits who we are.
GIVE YOUR EDITOR A MASSIVE RAISE, THE OPENING WAS STRAIGHT 🔥🔥🔥
The editor did amazing!
100% agree!!
I love seeing the movie through this lens but I think the "I wanna be a hot guy in Tokyo" was a mistranslation at least that's what I saw other people saying and that what she really said was "I want to be a city girl in my next life"
I was just about to recommend this movie as well!!
Yes! Wolf Children!!
Wolf children is absolutely amazing. Easily the best of Hosodas work.
Came down to the comments to see if anyone else recommended this movie. Yes please do Wolf Children!
Katsuhiro Otomo masterpiece that Americans actually wanted to adapt really bad but still thankfully hadn't, lol #DontTouchAkira
It's very very different but Akira influenced so many both in filmaking and storytelling, will it be for anime or live action that I think it's an important watch.
YES!!! Please, I hope they see this. Weathering With You is incredible. This close to becoming a patreon supporter to tell them 😭
Oo im excited for Suzume. Both of the previous shows were amazing :)

So They're not together in picture but it can be assumed haha.
I loved Wolf Children too. Would be a great one to discuss ☺️👍
Yes!! I love this channel and if they love meaningful storytelling in anime, they'll likely enjoy!
Absolutely!! That, and honestly a good chunk of Mamoru Hosoda’s films would be perfect to have them react to!
A MASTERPIECE
Yes Wolf Children is so good!
Others have already dropped their suggestions, would love to second Belle and Wolf Children!
Belle is a more recent one about grief and reaching out, while Wolf Children is about motherhood. Both are amazing films!
While Wolf Children features a mom I think even fathers can heavily relate to the parenthood aspect of the film
@@AttackRunRepeat Ah I totally agree!
//Even being teased by the 5th dimension, I'll still look your way,
So let's choose our secret sign for when we introduce ourselves again!
'Cause I'm heading out now to chase after your name//
❤❤❤❤❤
0o0 amazing info. Will definitely remember that from now on. ❤️
The movie finale for VE was beautiful you should watch
I hope they see Violet Evergarden even offcam. It´s a crime to yourself missing KyoAni works when you have the sensibility to enjoy and experience this kind on stories.
I triple that recommendation. Hands-down my favorite series.
For me VE ends at the Auto Memory doll movie coz I hated that development in the last movie. But nothing can take away the fact that VE is such a beautiful series and I love it to bits so for me the last arc doesnt exist.
Spoiler**
Just cannot accept that a guy who took a kid when she was 9 and practically raised her goes on to marry her.
Weathering With You is truly a great movie, I think they would love it, especially with the special little cameo 😉
Yeah, baby!!!! They MUST watch "Belle"!!! It's a movie so packed with real, daily life isues. More over in this so connected world full of social networks and all the benefits along the negative aspects it brings.
Hot take: Weathering with you has great visuals and cinematography but in terms of storytelling, its alright.
If you like those movies I recommend Wolf Children- a little difficult to find but worth it
I would love if you guys did an episode on Wolf Children. It's another really amazing anime movie. Its about love and loss and family and follows this mother trying to raise of two children who can turn into wolves. So there's a fantastical element to it, but its really grounded and beautiful and I guarantee Alan's gonna cry.
God... Wolf Children was so unbelievably good...
Words can't describe how that movie made me feel.
I was going to suggest this too, glad someone else shouted this! It is an amazing piece about being a single mom raising 2 children who are different
Ah i can't watch that one again! Too heartbreaking! 😭
I looove this movie. so many good messages
Yes! Please do this one! You won't regret it!
"Your Name" is definitely a "watch it twice" film, similar to "When Marnie Was There."
The first time, you watch it for the suspense and the huge "reveal."
The second time, you watch it so you can fully appreciate what's going on now that you know what's going on.
You might also have fun reviewing "Our Little Sister," a live-action Japanese film which is expertly crafted.
Twice? more than 10 times maybe? lol. As a script writer myself, i did that with some movies and your name definitely in the list.
And yes, no true antagonist... i like that you point it out...
When Marnie Was There is my favourite Ghibli movie, I really hope they cover it! ❤️
you watch that shit 10x , it gets stuck in your mind
True I didn't much liked Marnie but when I watched it for a second time it made me cry
Wolf children, please. It's a beautiful story where you understand Hana's whole journey whether you're a parent or not and it's just gorgeous.
Yes it is.
YES! I also commented Wolf Children. It is so heart warming and heart breaking.
this! yes!

Wolf Children yes!!!!! Your Name and Wolf Children are S-class anime films. Obviously you could name a slew of Miyazaki films as well.
Wolf Children is such a touching movie, especially if you are parents. I can’t recommend it more for these guys!!
I also want to suggest Wolf Children. Anything by Mamoru Hosada is fantastic, but I think Wolf Children would be especially perfect because of the family dynamics and how different both kids are.
The Girl Who Leaped Through Time, The Boy and the Beast, Summer Wars, Mirai... Hosoda earns my eyes on every film

Also Grave Of The Fireflies, I watched that movie with my parents and it destroyed them.
yeah, wolf children. definitely would make them cry. especially cos they're parents
Wolf Children made me cry ugh i love it
The fact that you put in a clip of the ATLA live action when Alan said, "Let me ruin it!" had me DYING!
The girl who lept through time is really bittersweet and strangely gut wretching
I would add "I want to eat your pancreas" to this list. Weird title but fantastic film
Weathering With You might be worth their time, and I would OF COURSE add A Silent Voice, but they already covered it! (thank goodness)
Girl Who Leapt Through Time is my favorite anime film, and somewhat similarly to Your Name, it does a really good job with its bittersweet moments.
Tokyo Godfathers was soooo good!
@@shadowhamster Most people I've suggested it to had never heard of it so it was my impression that it is not very well known.
I also would love to see this! Its such a good movie
I think anything by Mamoru Hosoda is an instant win.
T H I S. Yes, this is good. Please, it was so emotional and can also tap into what kids are like growing up. Their changes and behavior, especially in a mother's point of view and how the mom grows too!
Yes!
Yes I thought of this one too. I think it is the one that is closest to Your name while being very different in story
It’s really interesting because I remember in school we learned that the first cartoons from the 1930s were intended for adults.
@@bulletsandbracelets4140 Fun for us to watch Alan cry you mean! XD
Wolf children would be really interesting
Wolf children would be such a good choice for this!
I was going to recommend Wolf Children. It’s so good and total mom goals for me.
Yesss! Wolf Children is so good.
"5 centimeters per second" would be a great react. Its more grounded and almost no sci-fi and tells a story about boy and a girl from childhood to adulthood. Any movie from Makoto Shinkai is worth a react. He has one of the most stellar filmographies in the Japanese film industry.
5 cm/s... damn. I'd rather not want to get sad again.
I would love to see what they say about this movie, great recommendation, lovely animation!
That would be so perfect for these two. That or the garden of words.
Yes! I just watched it a couple days ago and it’s so beautiful.
@@Jackson-rr5rh I'd love to see Jonathan specifically react to garden of words, for every relationship in the film.
Oh my goodness, definitely Wolf Children and Perfect Blue!! Yes!
OMG YES
Perfect Blue, omg YES!
Josee the tiger and the fish, yeesss!!!!
Absolutely Josee! One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, both artistically and emotionally.
Yes! Please do Josee!
Omg, that would be awesome!
Don't forget Maquia
I think it was because camera movement
That does make sense because the first character in what Taki wrote was the す and the first stroke is a horizontal line.
I missed that seeing as I don't know Japanese, but I am now remembering that certain characters are drawn in a certain order, so it makes sense that it wouldn't be her name. I missed that detail, that would hit hard for someone who gets it on first watch
Oh my god I didn’t know that, thank you so much! I’m so in love with this movie and you just helped me fall a little more
Belle is really good too. Very emotional and I feel like it would be really cool to see Jonathan talk about the main character
@@austinsinger7565 yeah, I don't know. I saw it for the first time this year and I adored it.
Oh yes it is beautiful. I watched it this yeat and I loved it. Every Song, every moment EVERYTHING was amazing. And the Endingen...geeze...
Also EVERY dub I heard was amazing. I watched it in german and wow
This one!! This one to me showed that there were may different kinds of love. Not just romantic love.
second this! your name, ghibli (just in general), and belle are the most amazing anime movies i've watched.
I LOVE IT, so please do it!
that one would be cool to see
@@daisyphinney1038 Wolf Children, for Mother's day! -- but it's a little to far away
Agreed that Wolf Children is another excellent anime to watch!
Yess they should do 5cms/sec of only to have them cry
I agree with this statement "Five Centimeters per Second is (in my vision) the predecessor of Your Name, but with a bittersweet ending." For me, its just a bit more in touch with the reality of what happens to relationship through time.
5cm/s is such a fatastic movie. I grew up on it, one of my fondest influences at my teenage years
Garden of words is about a pedophile with a foot fetish. Wouldn't really recomend xD.
Or maybe I would so these guys could disect it lol
Based
I love Mirari!! I would totally recommend that movie too! You'd all love it! It was such a surprise when I watched it and wish we could encounter those time swaps to give each other those kinds of second chances and change of perspective into a new future. Ugh, I cried so much watching this! THanks guys!
I loved mirai I don't get why it's not as loved as other hosada films
A few things you probably missed:
1) You remember the beginning (and the end too) where they talk about having a dream as if something's missing as they get ready for work? Notice how after they wipe their tears they stop to look at their hands... It's the same hand they tried to write each other's name on
2) In China and Japan there is an idea of an invisible red string connecting two destined lovers.
So the god is actually the comet and gave the family the power to save it's people
4) And the BIG Whopper. You can see it on your clip at 17:58 😥
And yes, the director/writer, Makoto Shinkai did comment that mitsuha would have written something else other than her name in a Q&A 😥😥😥
Why wouldn't she write her name on his hand?
I just saw Drifting home (well that’s the English version of the title at least) and thought that was really good too,
Your Name is my all time favourite and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
I agree with this sooo much! It’s such a good anime movie that I can’t watch it without crying about 5 times.
Bruh that film made me cry so dam hard it’s genuinely so beautiful
💕💕💕💕
Yess I love that movie
I was going to recommend Wolf Children myself, but then I saw this comment and it just made things easier 😂🙏
The soundtrack is what made the movie for me. RADWIMPS is such an awesome band!
Anime brother
_Weathering with You_ is very good, but not on the same level as _Your Name_ which is a masterpiece of masterpieces. If you liked _Weathering with You,_ keep an eye out for _Josie the Tiger and the Fish._ It's different from but similar to _A Silent Voice._
Weathering With You was good, but Im just glad they already covered A Silent Voice.
As far as anime movies go, Makoto Shinkai has The Garden of Words, and Weathering With You. However I would also recommend a lot of the Mamoru Hosoda movies as they center around topics relating to family:
Wolf Children - about motherhood
The Boy and the Beast - about fatherhood
Summer Wars - about large and extended families and your place in them/the world
Mirai of the Future - about being siblings (and the older one moslty)
I must say, I come back numerous times over to see this intro.. the editing with the music is amazing… “This is my favourite movie now, A masterclass in Film Making… *DUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUH*…” and all the best bits of what they say throughout the video along with the epic guitar riff and drums…🔥 50 Sensational Seconds 🔥
