- Super Mario RPG is one of the best games for the Super Nintendo, full of memorable characters and fun scenarios. So, since it's so good, I decided to play it in the worst way I could possibly imagine. I've turned off every reward from combat; experience, coins, you name it. And so the question simply becomes, can you beat Super Mario RPG without earning anything?

I like how because his strongest weapon has as much power as Peach's weakest, people say Bowser sucks. However, in a low level run, He's him.
When Mario is knocked out, what Bowser is throwing is a Mario doll.
I guess he has standards about one thing. That's not to use a dead carcass as a weapon.
Fun fact, if magikoopa summons the bomb in his boss fight and it goes off, magikoopa bugs out and does nothing for the rest of the fight

The fact that Bowser can wear the same style of pants as everyone else raises many, many questions.
They're either really large pants(for everyone else) or bowser is really good at squeezing

Fun Fact, after you beat Johnny, before you leave, you can jump on his head and he says this to Mario, "Just because you're my mate doesn't mean you can jump on my head."

Did not know Sky Troopa minigame gave frog coins. I thought the only renewable ways to get frog coins is by jumping on the sinkhole guys or the Wigglers in mushroom forest enough times and for the life of me I simply can not do that. Even after all of these years I am STILL learning new stuff about this game.
There's also the beetle catching thing you activate in seaside town to be done at booster hill. Gold ones get you frog coins. The Goomba thumping game in the Pipe Vault gets you frog coins after winning the flower tab and jar.
I'm so glad they made getting frog coins easier in the remake.

To my knowledge it is actually possible to skip all fights with the Heavy Troopas. For some reason you can walk behind all of them with the right positioning. Also the See Ya item is great for random encounters since you're guaranteed to run from them.
I love Super mario rpg because 1. It’s just a really damn solid jrpg even if it’s on the easy side and 2. It’s mechanics inherently make it an ideal game for challenge runs.

for future reference, star egg doesn't run no matter how many times you use it and does 100 to all enemies, so it's a good backup if you run out of rock candies or don't wanna go to mushroom guy as often.

What I learned from this video: The mushroom kingdom is a collection of total anarchist shitholes where leaders get deposed on a whim on a daily basis, and where the unemployment rate is somewhere around 90%, with the remaining 10% tasked with clearing out the corpses

Seer deserves a Lifetime Achievement Awared for this video. Not only is the UI an impressive pain in the ass, but I laugh quite hard a multiple points throughout no matter how many times I come back to watch this. Definitely one of my favorite videos on the whole platform.

What a run and what a challenge! You certainly did a great job advertising SMRPG using most every mechanic you could outside of the... well the main ones.
I've played this game multiple times but never knew about the perfect block. Now I see where TTYD super-gaurding comes from.
It shows up a lot easier in the remake and has a visual flare.

My man, this may be one of the best challenge run videos I have ever watched on the ole' Yuuuutes. From the challenge idea itself to your voice, the writing, the delivery, the bloopers being left in, quick and sweet though so they don't get too repetitive, all while still being informative about a game I've indeed never played. I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard from watching a challenge run video. You truly have a talent for it, dude. Keep it up and you'll be hitting 100K+ subs in no time, I guarantee.
@Seer: You are already broken one of your rule in the title screen can't used item, and all you have been doing is using item. So that mean it would be imposible to beat Super mario RPG with no experience, no money, and no item.

Regarding the jump ability, 255 is a very neat and common number to come across in games. This is usually assigned to an 8-bit value (byte) as 255 is the max value for that binary string (2 values to the power of 8 being 256, or better yet, binary 1111 1111 is equal to 255 and NOT 256)
Now back to the jump ability. It counts to 255 specifically because your 0th jump (not using it at all) counts as 1 integer as well. If the code were to cap at 256 instead of 255, that would add an extra integer value making it 257 total integers which an 8-bit memory storage (256 values again) wouldn’t be able to do, thus causing your jump count to reset back to 0 due to data overflow.
Since SMRPG is run on a 16-bit system, the console has the ability to retain current information equal to 16-bits (65,536 KB) or lower, and is why the jump counter and many other values can be tracked/discarded without the system crashing. (65,536 KB - 256 KB = 65,280 KB. That’s a mere fraction of data used just for the jump counter, and the rest is of course being used for other permanent/temporary resources)
The 16-bit memory on the console is what allows SMRPG to have the expanded graphics and gameplay it has compared to its preceding games. 16-bit addresses allowing increased depth and detail of the game, while the smaller 8-bit addresses are usually used for instant memory registration (like the jump counter again)

It sort of makes me wonder what programming language SMRPG was written in, as it along with the hardware would have limited the size of the variables used. But it's still super neat that the Jump ability had this mechanic at all.
The answer to that is likely the same for most nes and snes games at the time: some version of the assembly programming language. It isn’t very user-friendly…
In Phantasy Star, The 8-bit console got around technical limitations by making Dark Falz have two instances of himself with 510 hp and he gets two attacks.

Impressive, definitely thought I’d see the Star Egg at some point for insurance, but I’m not sure how much time that would save in the long run. Can’t wait to see the video of you doing this for the rerelease coming out on Friday and seeing if it’s possible to do this plus the post game with extra boss battles!

Damn the ending to this really tricked me, after all your talk about Limited Sack Space (tm) I thought you were building up to a reveal that you went and got the Star Egg. It could've been slightly faster getting Star Egg and saving a good bit of room for more Red Essence and/or Pick Me Ups, though you would've had to die a little inside as you sat through all those rounds of Look The Other Way and then dealt with Star Egg only dealing 100/150 damage per use.
I'll take more of this, please. Humor is spot on, as always.

I think this challenge would definitely be a lot easier, but also potentially harder, in the remake. You get more defensive and offensive abilities and you can still one shot exor with geno whirl.
Except that Geno doesn’t level up, so you don’t have Geno Whirl 😜
you'd only be able to carry 3 rock candies at once. scary!
As someone trying a similar challenge in the remake, but with the minimal level possible (which is Mario at level 3) and no equipment to speak of, it's absolute pain. Only three red essences and three rock candies allowed. Technically the freebie chance is slightly higher (1/3 for everything as opposed to 1/4 for most items in the original). The magic head is a guaranteed full party wipe without red essence thanks to the no equipment rule.
At least Dark Star is blockable, as rare is it is for Smithy to use that.
The only piece of equipment allowed is Mario's Lucky Hammer, since the Lucky Jewel breaks after 10 uses and the hammer is the only way to guarantee a shot at the Yoshi minigame to keep my level low. Besides, the hammer itself has no stats.

The ants in the whirlpool are skippable. There is a small window where you can make them rise or but not trigger the battle, then you just take the whirlpool

If I remember correctly, one firebomb insta kills dodo (if not 2)
While it’s does nothing to smithy, you can use the fright bomb on Gunyolk and cause fear which makes it more bearable.
Also if you block birdo’s single egg attack (with defending, not an action command) the egg ricochets and sits next to Birdo. You can then attack it and it explodes, damaging birdo.
Also if you time the block of Crocko’s “chomp” attack while the enemy is at the height of its arch, it’s a perfect block
I did a Bowser solo run using thw randomizer and to bear Smithy it required grinding red essence for Smithy because Bowsers magic defense is purw trash and Shredder was brutal. One quick thing mid video in case you didnt know. Bowyer uses a formula to decide what button is locked! I actuality did know that either till i started speedrunning the game, but its great knowledge!
