I find it astounding how much I love these Mario Party videos despite how much I disagree with you. You saying Mystery Land is underrated and giving it a B-Tier... I knew it was going to happen but it didn't prevent me from audibly yelling "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SMOKING?!?". Good shit.
My favorite part of this is despite having next to no story this game does have a canon victor, Luigi wins and his reward is a board in Mario party 3... Well it was his board but a certain purple guy decided he deserved it more
Fun fact about Mario party 3. Mario party 3 Was Waluigis second appearance but his most important one. Waluigi was literally just created as a partner to Wario in the tennis games and nothing else and would have likely been forgotten by people like the Koopa kids or Toadsworth (Rip my boi 😢) if it weren’t for this game. This game Stated that Waluigi was here to stay. I mean They even gave him His own board. Mario spinoff creators are giving him more respect than smash bros.
The best part about the hootenanny at Western Land is that it drags everyone to the space right in front of the hootenanny trigger so if you're playing with a group of friends who are all completely deranged you can blow all your collective funds on locking the game in an eternal milk party for turns and turns on end.
Weird thing, there's a document floating around that's like...way too long for a single MP minigame that describes the mechanics behind Day at the Races to some extent. It is still random to some extent iirc, but statistically the Thwomp is far and away the worst of the four racers, and each of them have a different set of animations that tells you whether they're going to have a fast finish or a slow finish. Still very knowledge-check-y and not really what you want for a party game, but y'know. Also, regarding Bowser's Big Blast, the way that the odds stack up for each player and the removal of plungers is pretty neat, since every player has an exactly equal chance to get knocked out every round. I don't feel up to breaking down all the math in a TH-cam comment but it's a neat dynamic.
I honestly think all the times Ive seen Day At The Races played Thwomp has won it maybe three times. I can't believe how much it feels like a guaranteed loss. Kind of like how when you'd play four player games and someone would get stuck with the Mad Catz controller.
Mario Party 5 has some major issues with its standard party mode but it also has like eight hundred extra modes that kind of spice things up; I particularly love the “Super Duel Mode”, which almost feels like a different video game entirely.
Hey Seerman I am greatly enjoying these Mario Party reviews because I get to relive those memories from my childhood I never thought about again and each minigame and menu is like an activation phrase for the deepest depths of my psyche. Good stuff ARPG man when you think about it Mario Party is an Action RPG because there is Action and you choose a character to Role and Play and Game. I think if Mario Party 2's introduction of the item system already allowed you to carry more than a single item, it'd be the best Mario Party game (only other room for improvement would be just a bigger roster of characters). Between the item minigame spaces and shops, you're pretty much guaranteed to obtain an item pretty quickly, and then it tends to be dead weight for several turns. The skeleton key in particular is awful because you cannot even throw it away, you have to actually go towards a door and open it even if you just wanted to free your item slot. Mystery Land sucks because players will spend most of their time running circles in one of the four corners of the map at the mercy of landing on a happening space instead of biting the bullet and filling their one item slot with a skeleton key.
that's deff true regarding if party 2 could carry 3 items, as it'd deff make strategy a lot better overall. but then again we have to consider that it does make complete sense why 2 only had 1 item slot back in the day. aside possible technical limitations, it shows how the series was slowly evolving
my brother was one of those bleeding and maimed kids back in the day due to the stick rotating games. The price kids were willing to pay to be the winner of these games were unreal.
Loved this game as a kid, definitely the mario party I played the most. I may be misremembering, but wasn't the reward for beating minigame coaster that you unlock a super hard difficulty for the AI? Surprised they never brought back the idea of board specific costumes for every character, it's fun.
And it did in the form of a coin-minigame. The only thing that matters is grabbing coins on the platforms, no coins from actually getting across first.
Honestly if the Mario Party 2 review is this serious im thinking maybe 3,6 or DS is gonna take the crown. 2 is definitely my favorite but i can tell it's mostly nostalgia for me.
I like to think Mario Party 2 was all a performance like the stage play intro suggests. I could understand Wario being narcissistic about the name, but not everyone else. And also because Bowser goes down in a single cork in Western Land which also suggests dramatization.
