Its a JRPG machine.....so many great games. A lot of the action/adventure games were trying to be console style games.....and they just didn’t work out (Uncharted). The jest thing about Vita for me, besides the JRPGs, are the PS1/PS2 classics, and that you can load PSP games via PS3. I wish they were making many more classic games available for Vita. Its really too bad. With a proper grip for Vita, giving access to all shoulder buttons and the awkward rear touchpad.....its an awesome system.

The same way the Genesis renders games at the higher resolution than the Snes (320 horizontal vs 256). The Nintendo 3DS easily could at least have been a 1-1 Gamecube or even a Wii, and that would have been amazing, but this is Nintendo we're talking about here. Even though keeping game development costs low for a handheld is a great strategy, it could at least have been noticeably better than PSP.

ps vita was too expensive $249? if memory isn't fuzzy that was more expensive than the wii or ds. psp was a gem good JRPG machine and decent ports for handhelds. ryan psp emulator actually fixes the quality of these games just a side note. recently beat Lego harry potter in psp and it was awesome.
Well, yeah, you could get a 360 or a PS3 for the Vita's total price w/memory card, so a Wii and definitely a DS was less expensive. Sony tried a launch price announcement at that years E3, they matched the price of the 3DS (before we knew the added cost of memory cards), but Nintendo reacted and dropped the price before the Vita launched.
The Vita itself was not too expensive, however the memory cards were really expensive, and you could tell MicroSD cards were a lot cheaper. This prevented many people from buying more games for their PS Vita. The PS Vita not having a MicroSD card slot was the critical mistake.
In my opinion PSP is the greatest handheld system of all time and far superior to the PS Vita. The PSP's game library was insane and also had a great movie library as well. It was literally a portable PS2 which in my opinion is the greatest console of all time. I did like how they switched to cartridges instead of umd disc on PS Vita and the two thumbsticks are great but the PS Vita's library is lacking a lot compared to all the great 3rd party games on PSP.
@@JustSomeGuy900 are you sure you can play ALL psp games on the Vita ??? If so please tell me how. So far all I know is that you can buy psp games from the vita store, buy them on ps3 store and transfer them to your vita, or I think you could buy psp games from the ps website and download them to your Vita. What if there is a psp game that I can't find on either of those methods, how will I play it on ps vita ?
I enjoy the games I have on vita more than what I had on psp with cod, killzone, god of war, ninja gaiden, uncharted as a few examples though psp did have quantity and variety on its side and I had way more games overall on psp
I own both and love handheld systems more so than home consoles. I still think the SONY PSP is better, because it had much more games that I like to play; RPG’s, Racing, side scrollers, shooters, and brawlers! I love the SONY PS VITA, because of it’s potential and the graphic capabilities. Too bad, not many developers, consumers, or even SONY cared. A wasted opportunity and potential that was never fully realized. Imagine Contra, Street Fighter, Dark Souls, Devil May Cry, God of War, and Resident Evil on the handheld.
As someone who owns every system Sony has released, I still enjoy my psp and vita BOTH a lot! PSP had a very diverse library including tons of first and third party games. Vita was superior technically. But the library is not nearly as robust. I love both and wouldn’t throw either one under the bus. 💪😎👍
If they hadn’t included the touch panel the cost would have been cheaper and that alone would have sold more consoles. Also yeah it sucked. Games that require it just made the PSTV feel more obsolete and contributed to that failing. That touch pad shouldn’t have been a thing man.
@@asadavis9532 This is my opinion: No touch panel, no camera, no 3g version, no expensive memory cards, r2 l2 buttons, and use the rest of the money to make ps2 emulation posible.

Honestly the nostalgia for me with the psp is crazy. I honestly barely remember not having a second stick and for some reason the sound of the disc spinning made me feel like I was holding the future. It’s sleek square design still feels cooler to me too.
Yessir.... The psp was the best... Game library was insanely good and the ergonomics of the psp feels great... I also like the classic charge port for the psp which never breaks down like usb ports do
I actually picked up my PSP lately again. And I have to say, it's still great. I'm playing games that I missed back then like Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Some games look awful but a lot of them still hold up decently.
I bought my PSP used shortly after I got a Vita. I have to say, I enjoyed the PSP more. I’m still impressed that Sony released this thing in 2004. When you hack it and load all your games on a 32GB SD card it’s very fast and you don’t need to carry UMDs with you. Installing a custom firmware just takes a few minutes. Doing that on the Vita is a pain. Also I used this thing to play so many GBA games. The emulator was perfect! All the amazing Super Mario Games on such a nice and big display! I loved it. PSP was the first time I experienced Metal Gear Solid 1, I will never forget how much fun I had with that. It basically made me into the super-fan I am now. I liked how they used the XMB as a menu. It was nice and fast. Also it was so easy to load music and videos on it. No need for some weird Content Manager. The PC just detects it as a mass storage. I still use it as a media consumption device from time to time. But I respect your opinion, Ryan. Still a great video. Looking forward to the next LTPS on friday! :)
TranscendingPolygons I play tons of PSP games on Vita. You just need a working PS3 to make this happen. Any downloadable PSP game will transfer to Vita. Its a much better screen, twin analog sticks, and with a grip, you have 4 proper shoulder buttons, including buttons for the rear touchpad. In fact, I think I have more PSP games on Vita, than Vita games. PSP has a better library.
@@smokeinc9800 yeah, now I am horrified to update the system. I like how it can spoof the fw so I can still download from psn. Really wish they didnt neglect the vita psone classics to only be downloaded from the ps3.
Wow. You are so bold. You like Vita more than PSP?!?! You like the console that is newer, faster and better?! Wow i have never heard anybody say that before. We need more utubers like you bro!!
Every time I see your documentaries, it makes me wanna bust out my PSP or whatever hardware you’re talking about. The PSP had some great RPGs that I’d still love to have remasters of.
PSP was awesome because of the custom firmware. My PSP was on a custom firmware since the early 1.5 days. If you didn't partake in the custom firmware fun, then you were missing out. Plus you could use an SD card with adapter. The PSP Slim has a better screen compared the the OG. Ended up getting a second gen Slim for the better screen and battery life to replace my original. Along with a 64gb sd card, it made for a killer system in the day. PSP also had more killer games, even if most came later in life. IMO the PSP is better than the DS. Even if the DS sold more. PSP Games, PS1 Games, Emulators, Homebrew. It was a crazy time. Vita never had that experience. It had a few great games. But without the homebrew the system just didn't hold up. The 3DS is by far the better handheld. The Vita's game library is more comparable to the DS, a few standouts and a bunch of shovelware. The Vita is pretty must a mobile Indy platform, and that platform moved on to the Switch as the successor. The Vita is nice modded, but I have trouble trying to recommend it over the vastly better 3DS library. Modded with a CFW the 3DS is just epic, the 3DS IMO has the best game library of any handheld Nintendo console ever made. The Switch has yet to have a game lineup to match it. I really wanted a epic successor to the PSP, the Vita was not it. The Vita community couldn't touch the huge PSP community, the mod scene was crazy back then. A Doom Emulator was one of the early ports. Playing Doom on the go, filling it up with movies/music, tons of games. It was what we had before smartphones were even a thing. Don't forget that.
I use my psp slim for on the go retro gaming its awesome to play gba games on it. I use a memory stick to micro sd adapter as well. Got like 64gb storage on mine lol. Even ps1 games works so well.
Psp had more diversity but I wanted a 2nd analog for my shooters and felt many of the games I had should have been harder(complexity) to beat so I was bored by the 4th-5th year. I'm still happy with vita 7 years later and have assassins creed liberation, cod black ops declassified, killzone mercenary, god of war collection, need for speed most wanted, ninja gaiden 1-2,mortal kombat, resident evil revelations 2,the walking dead season 1-2, the amazing spiderman, unit 13 and uncharted golden abyss. But vita didn't get popular games like GTA(psp highest seller) and star wars and the main reason for its commercial failure IMO
Well PS3 was a success in the end but it had tough competition with the 360, but the Vita was massacred by Sony themselves sadly :( But I get your point though. PS3 would have gotten more sales if it released in 05' and if it wasn't so expensive at launch.
@@DawgDanger the PS3 had a great reason to be the price it was: a built in PS One, a built in PS2, a built in DVD and Blu Ray Player, plus the PS3 itself, all that together would've costed alot of money separately

It's a shame Sony thinks mobile games killed handheld gaming, It would be amazing to see what Sony could do with a "psvita 2" and how they'd approach handheld gaming in the next generation. Oh well
i feel that the psp and the 3ds were partly a huge success because it allowed a way of effectively extending the ps2 era of game quality. If devs didnt want to have the expense of developing HD visuals for the consoles, the handhelds were a really appealing option. I mean square definitely took advantage of this in particular with all of it's kingdom hearts spin offs and bravely default ( the latter of which kept the winning ps1 final fantasy formula alive and well, world map and all)
Project diva F 2nd wasn't good enough coming from an otaku that is reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaalyyyyyyyyy muuuuuuuuuuuuuch it's slow compared to PSP (not the speed of the console, but the speed of the notes wasn't a big deal) i see videos of PDF2nd and say "i can fucking perfect that with one hand!!!"
i still love my psp and vita in 2023, just the other day i had to take my car for repairs in another city and it was going to take 4 hours, so i took my psp and 2 movies then just sat there watching them
I recently received an extra, fat model, PSP that my buddy had in return for replacing the screen on his slim. I wanted one of these when I was a kid, but couldn't afford it. So it's nice to be able to get one now well after the platform has reached maturity. Plenty of games available to choose from, and easy to softmod thus giving me access to even more. I've tried emulating GBA on my phones before, but I couldn't stand it with the onscreen controls. It feels so much more natural on physical hardware, so the PSP really excels here for me. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this as a portable gaming device. Especially as I get more into older games, since most newer games lack any real love. When I'm ready, I might grab myself a Vita, if I can find something on the platform that I'm interested in game-wise (I haven't looked yet, as I'm currently quite satisfied). Good news is that a used Vita is pretty affordable. I bet it'll be even more so when I'm get around to getting one.
I absolutely love the Vita, and it holds a special place for me for keeping me sane during a deployment to Afghanistan back in 2013-14. Now though, I have a hacked PSTV (whitelisted) with a USB stick holding all my PSP games on the big screen, as portable gaming isn't as much a need for me anymore, but gives me finally a good way to play the 100+ games I own for both consoles on the big screen.
I bought my PSVita last year, since my PSP 1000 died around then, and I do love it quite a bit (mostly cause a modded Vita can do a lot), buuut I think you're downplaying the PSP a lot here. Also, even though I do agree with you when it comes to controls, saying the PSP's graphics were basically "a portable PS1" is a bit of a stretch, imo...
I love the PSP more than the VITA...for starters it had better games overall + had a better XMB (navigational menu). The VITA mainly had FPS and RPG games and the menu had stupid bubble icons.
@@DungarooTV I agree, the XMB feels (and looks) far better than those bubbles, and its games library is way better! I mostly love the Vita basically, cause I modded mine, and with that done, you basically have a PSP in hands. So it's a 2 in 1 kinda deal, but if it wasn't for that... I guess I'd still prefer the PSP more.
I actually LOVE my PSP. I've had it for years and it still works great. I also have the Vita, which is great too, but I find myself always going back to my PSP.
There's also the fact that the Vita has a native PSP emulator built into it.. and after a bit of hacking, you can access it via Adrenaline for full CFW PSP goodness! I loved my PSP back in the day, and the hacking scene around it was awesome too, but the Vita honestly just replaces it completely. I literally haven't touched my PSP after getting my Vita, and I think that's a good thing. In that sense, the Vita has lived up to what it was supposed to be as a second generation Sony handheld.
Sir Charles It's not an emulator. I don't know why people keep on saying that. PSP is the portable ps2, not portable ps1. Yeah, it can emulate ps1 perfectly, but the full games released on psp were on par with the ps2 games. Even some games came to both plataforms (psp and ps2). You completely missed the point.
I love my psp! I loved taking it on the go and watching movies and anime shows on the go.Once the homebrew scene came out I was the only kid in my class in high school that had the psp and was known as the hacker kid that hacked his psp lol.
Vita is the reason that I did not buy a Switch, and I never regret buying this. I can play all the games that I like on the go, Vita, PSP and PS1, you name it. Think of it as a portable PS3. It's too bad that there aren't many racing games for Vita like how PSP had.
I love both systems so much, I grew up with the PSP and I couldn't get enough of it, I would game on it all the time, I would always listen to music on it and i had about 3 movie UMDs. I remember finally getting a 4GB Memory Stick when It FINALLY went on sale at my local tech store and I was so excited, memory sticks were so expensive back then. I carried my PSP literally everywhere with me and even neglected girls back in the day, it was the vibrant blue PSP 3000, absolutely loved it. Now with the Vita, I was so excited and wanted one so bad at the time and I got one and it came with an 8gb card thank god, those fuckers are expensive. I loved the Vita, so many awesome games on it, it was like a portable PS3, I just wish Sony gave it more support and not made us use those memory cards that would break the bank. I might get a Vita again one day not sure, but it is an extremely underrated hand-held and one of the best.
I remember loving the psp series, I experienced many versions of it through bro who lost his then got it replaced with a newer 3000 version, and cousin's 2000 yellow simpsons edition one. I loved playing tekken dark resurrecc and 6 on it, and now that I think about it, the whole series was way ahead of its time : )
Honestly, I've known a *lot* of people who've owned PSP's, and most really like them, and only some are dissatisfied/apathetic. A few even truly love it. *Everyone* I know who owns a PS Vita is, at LEAST, very, very satisfied, and usually loves it. And a lot of them adore it.
The psp is stil my favorite portable I even enjoyed the UMDs. I prefer the physical copy than to risk shit getting deleted or data being corrupted fuck those chances lol not much of a digital copy owner of games
Honestly there is a lot to love about the PSP vs the Vita. I like both btw. The Vita's layout on its hardware was frustrating at times, with much smaller face buttons (I have large hands, so my thumbprint is as large as the entire circumference of all the buttons) and had less of a tactile response to my inputs. They also put the Start/Select/PS buttons on the sides, instead of the half of inch of space below the screen (As the PSP had) so it made everything cramped. I also thought that the sticks had little x-axis movement compared to the full half-inch of lateral movement on the nub from the original PSP. I also never understood the need for the rear touchpad, as it was (like the gyroscope) a huge added expense to system overall, when you could have put high level rear buttons to fully replicate rear shoulder buttons on a controller. (Would have made console games MUCH easier to play.) PSP suffered from what Xbox and Sony do alot, which is try to dump the kitchen sink into a system without mastering 2-3 things that will get people to buy the system. The PS1's controller added a set of sticks, which is an step-up from its pervious version. Neither the PSP or the Vita took that approach, and even in some ways took steps back. (No second nub for PSP 2000 and later, Lack of the OLED from the Vita 2000 model)
I tried going back to my psp. I was playing crisis core. For some reason I remembered the game looking way better than it actually did as I revisited it
Great video! Another flaw with the UMD Movies is either DVD's that came with an extra disc for a digital copy of the film or digital codes the format usually worked with the PSP so it did defeat the purpose of UMD movies!
The PSP was literally the iphone before the iphone, the vita seeked to improve it, and I liked it better as well, but people thought it was wack thus it failed....
A hacked PSP was a clunky smartphone, years before iPhone. You could run tons of mindblowing stuff on PSP that isn't anything special now (and specifically, wasn't special when Vita launched)
Y'know, if Sony released a dedicated UMD Video device for like $100, I feel like the format would have paid off because they wouldn't be stuck with just 18-35 year olds as their demographic. The PSP is for the teens and kids, and the UMD Video device is for ages 3-99. It might have made things more complex, but not by much. Grandma who's traveling a lot isn't gonna wanna drop $250 on a PSP just to watch movies. She's gonna just want a really simple unit for JUST movies without anything like games making half the XMB useless and more confusing to them.
I didnt like the PSPs UMD drive, though its game library was awesome. But as a device, im much more partial toward the Vita over the PSP (and the DS, 3DS) and greatly enjoy using it. I use the og model with the OLED display and it still looks great today. Its just a shame Sony didnt support it the way they should have. Very solid console otherwise..
When looking at the consoles at their factory state, and simply comparing their game library, PS Vita doesn't hold a candle to the PSP. But thanks to community, it was given a new life.
Oh man, that horrific grinding noise UMDs make whenever they change speed. That is the thing I dislike most about the PSP. I watched dozens of videos and read numerous reviews and articles, and no one EVER mentioned that. This is the first video I have ever seen bring it up.
The psp only uses 802.11b wifi which is odd because 802.11g came out in 2003 so I guess they were just trying to cut costs a bit. Anyways point is unless your router is a old or happens to come with all the legacy support options enabled from the factory it might not be set up to support 802.11b because almost nobody is still using devices that use that wifi standard anymore. There are almost certainly legacy settings that could be enabled to get it to work though. I figured all this out because a few years ago I got out the old psp and it didn't connect to my wifi so I went and checked and sure enough I didn't have support for 802.11b enabled.

250+100+ game+ screen protector, carrying case....👀👀👀big ballers only...lol
Wii was $249 Ds was $149
@@danielgomez7236 I don't disagree with you. I just wonder how the drm / copy protection for Vita games on SD cards would work.

The PS Vita could have been great if it had exclusives and games lineup like the PSP was.
Yes
I enjoy the games I have on vita more than what I had on psp with cod, killzone, god of war, ninja gaiden, uncharted as a few examples though psp did have quantity and variety on its side and I had way more games overall on psp
Community loved it, Sony don't
I own both and love handheld systems more so than home consoles. I still think the SONY PSP is better, because it had much more games that I like to play; RPG’s, Racing, side scrollers, shooters, and brawlers!
I love the SONY PS VITA, because of it’s potential and the graphic capabilities. Too bad, not many developers, consumers, or even SONY cared. A wasted opportunity and potential that was never fully realized. Imagine Contra, Street Fighter, Dark Souls, Devil May Cry, God of War, and Resident Evil on the handheld.
You can play all those games on the Vita and more. That's the point.
As someone who owns every system Sony has released, I still enjoy my psp and vita BOTH a lot! PSP had a very diverse library including tons of first and third party games. Vita was superior technically. But the library is not nearly as robust. I love both and wouldn’t throw either one under the bus. 💪😎👍

Is the game “the bigs 2” available on the Vita?
Ps vita is good, but i really wanted a r2 and l2 button. The touch panel sucks.
Buy the grip.
Grip helps, but not perfect...extra analog stick lovely tho
Yeah i have the grip, but this should be at the beginning.

My dad had a modded psp and I thought he was some crazy hacker

Honestly the nostalgia for me with the psp is crazy. I honestly barely remember not having a second stick and for some reason the sound of the disc spinning made me feel like I was holding the future. It’s sleek square design still feels cooler to me too.
Yessir.... The psp was the best... Game library was insanely good and the ergonomics of the psp feels great... I also like the classic charge port for the psp which never breaks down like usb ports do
I dont know why but I like my PSP more than my Vita, maybe because its nostalgia to me!
Vita had potential, but Sony didn't support it

Same i like psp more than vita
If the vita had micro sd cards and more support from Sony it would’ve done extremely well.
You can add micro sd card, its called SD2VITA
kwite ok ik that but not everyone hacked the vita and it isn’t widely known and supported by Sony of course

There not gonna get cheaper anytime soon
The PSP is the greatest handheld ever made so far.

My condolences to all of you who missed the boat.
Out of all the consoles I’ve ever had the PSP is still my favourite
Seriously though, I rate PSP up there with the PS1 and 2, and that's hard to match
Plus you can play Me & My Katamari without awkwardly using the D-Pad and buttons. That makes the Vita a 10/10 IMO.

Even ps1 games works so well.
nope vita libraries are awesome aswell games like ninja gaiden, uncharted, killzone, lbp, persona, digimon, jet set radio list goes on
Psp had more diversity but I wanted a 2nd analog for my shooters and felt many of the games I had should have been harder(complexity) to beat so I was bored by the 4th-5th year.
Yeah 3ds have a huge library, currently stuck on 2 games
I was so close to getting a Vita until I was found out about the expensive memory cards. That was the deal breaker.
PSP to the Vita is what PS2 was for the PS3 (A system with such a legacy that it's successor couldn't hope to fill it's shoes).
Well PS3 was a success in the end but it had tough competition with the 360, but the Vita was massacred by Sony themselves sadly :( But I get your point though. PS3 would have gotten more sales if it released in 05' and if it wasn't so expensive at launch.
Ps3 came back in 2009 with uncharted 2 and the library was insane after that.
@@DawgDanger the PS3 had a great reason to be the price it was: a built in PS One, a built in PS2, a built in DVD and Blu Ray Player, plus the PS3 itself, all that together would've costed alot of money separately

i feel that the psp and the 3ds were partly a huge success because it allowed a way of effectively extending the ps2 era of game quality.

Why i liked PSP more than PS Vita
1. I can't afford a PS Vita
2. I love the PSP
PSP is the portable ps2, not portable ps1. Yeah, it can emulate ps1 perfectly, but the full games released on psp were on par with the ps2 games. Even some games came to both plataforms (psp and ps2). You completely missed the point.
On the PSP there is even God of War Ghost of Sparta which is technically a pre-PS3 game. PSP is still awesome
PSP is a portable ps3
Psp is ps1.5 and vita is ps2.5.
The PSP library is heaven for racing games, Japanese imports, RPGs, and fighting games.
I loved playing tekken dark resurrecc and 6 on it, and now that I think about it, the whole series was way ahead of its time : )
My PSP took 10 years before the knob fell of for the first time but every console is different lol
The knob easily plugged back on, I wore out the should buttons on my launch PSP, did replace it with a 3000.

I love how they tried to fix the no second analog stick thing by mapping the camera to the shoulder button didn't work very well though
I love the vitamin but personally I prefer PSP because I have so many memories with it with amazing games
i don't personally like/very dislike ps vita hardware design + software design
but psp design is just like heart warming
Grappler senpai people didn’t hate it, Sony did, they just stopped caring about it
Apple COPIED psp and ds
A hacked PSP was a clunky smartphone, years before iPhone. You could run tons of mindblowing stuff on PSP that isn't anything special now (and specifically, wasn't special when Vita launched)
i personally don't like vita at all it's design sucks
Y'know, if Sony released a dedicated UMD Video device for like $100, I feel like the format would have paid off because they wouldn't be stuck with just 18-35 year olds as their demographic. The PSP is for the teens and kids, and the UMD Video device is for ages 3-99. It might have made things more complex, but not by much. Grandma who's traveling a lot isn't gonna wanna drop $250 on a PSP just to watch movies. She's gonna just want a really simple unit for JUST movies without anything like games making half the XMB useless and more confusing to them.
Sony needs to drop a 3rd gen psp that’s bezel-less, that would be fye
AGREE!!!!
I love this video. Just had to rewatch it again for the third time. ;) Maybe it’s time for another Vita video?
I didnt like the PSPs UMD drive, though its game library was awesome. But as a device, im much more partial toward the Vita over the PSP (and the DS, 3DS) and greatly enjoy using it. I use the og model with the OLED display and it still looks great today. Its just a shame Sony didnt support it the way they should have. Very solid console otherwise..
When looking at the consoles at their factory state, and simply comparing their game library, PS Vita doesn't hold a candle to the PSP. But thanks to community, it was given a new life.
Hot-swap memory cards, that were actually less expensive as time went on
*mic drop*
Oh man, that horrific grinding noise UMDs make whenever they change speed. That is the thing I dislike most about the PSP. I watched dozens of videos and read numerous reviews and articles, and no one EVER mentioned that. This is the first video I have ever seen bring it up.
Not to mention that the PSP is the only console that plays Mega Man Powered Up.
hearing that umd spin and chug 5 inches from my face brings back so many memories.
Bro you've got really strange WiFi it works with my psp
@@joetheoriginalclark i got an adaptor and now my internet runs in that old system and todays system :P
Having one analog stick leaves more space for the 4 buttons on the right which is good
And moded Vita is much, much better. Mod gives second life to that device;)
3:37 Everyone in the back of the bus when I pulled out my PSP in Elementary School 2005
Then there’s the DS kids who were playing Mario kart in the front of the bus, then there’s the psp kids in the back of the bus playing GTA.
