      Sadly the Mages recomendations could be better. For example, conjuring, I don't know, some Scamps or esqueletons, asking you a potion that only you can do if you have more than 25 at alchemy....
      I don't know, something to show that you have some expierence doing magic. If you can do all the magic quest without magic, well, they're a poblem.

    Even though it's really awkward and cringey, I absolutely love the voice acting and NPC AI in Oblivion. You could hear that the voice actors of Oblivion were really into it, they put their hearts into it and had fun with it. Even though it's derpy, and there's some sort of mental and physical affliction that has taken hold of every NPC, it's hilarious and it somehow added to the charm of Oblivion. Skyrim doesn't have that.

      Dark Brotherhood, sure in Oblivion it was far better. The Thieves Guild are both decent, so that's a tie. The Mages Guild quest in Oblivion is nothing but fetch this, collect that, and all quests can be done by sneak and persuasion. Not much magic involved really, except creating a staff. Skyrim's Mage quest was better, because at least two instances involve the requirement of magic, and there was more than just kill this and fetch that. Overall, Oblivion guild quests were a bit better, but it's nothing to rave on about. Oblivion main quest was trash. The Oblivion Realm dungeons were the worst thing about that game ever, period

      @@sinnithael7707 You do know that ruins you were sent to, after the first Magic Lesson in Skyrim, was to learn about the history of magic, right? Seems fitting after a first lesson of magic, is it not??
      It just so happens your character discovered one of the most powerful artifacts ever, which your character CAN'T EVEN USE, so what's the problem with that story?
      Seems to me you haven't played alot of Skyrim at all. Probably just watched people play it on youtube, then formed your own biased opinion because of your nostalgia and blind love of Oblivion. Lol that Ultimate Heist quest from thieves guild was the longest, most drawn out quest. It became extremely redundant. Nothing to rave about

  • @madidezirae

    I love how dedicated Oblivion was to building large, creative environments. Such as the planes of Oblivion, and the Shivering Isles. When you were transported to those places, it helped add so much depth and interest to the entire game.
    The Shivering Isles specifically is also one of my favorite places to explore and experience in game. The color scheme, the array of different plants and creatures, it's twisted nature. Every person has a different personality. And spending time with Sheogorath and becoming his champion was just badass entirely. Who doesn't want to become a mad Daedric prince's champion?
    Oblivion also had a stronger feeling of saving the world and being the hero, compared to Skyrim. Yeah dragons are scary, but compared to the recesses of Hell opening up that are full of mutilated corpses, blood, lava, torture devices and terrifying enemies, dragons are nothing. I also love how the sky turns red when close to an Oblivion gate. It's such a small but thoughtful detail that always scared the shit out of me, especially when stumbling upon a gate in the middle of no where.

    I like how it's called petty reasons even though most of these are perfectly legitimate criticisms of skyrim

    • @masterblaster2678
      @masterblaster2678 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Some of them are petty. I think anyone that says combat in Oblivion is better than Skyrim is delusional. I'm not saying Skyrim's combat is good, ES isn't really good at making good combat. But Oblivion's combat is way worse than Skyrim's. It feels clunky, the character swings too fast, everything takes ages to kill, the only reaction they give to being hit is "bwaaaargh" whereas in Skyrim they actually stumble back a bit (about the "not being able to attack after being attacked" part in Oblivion, I agree, Oblivion did that better than Skyrim), drawing a bow has the flection feeling in Skyrim while in Oblivion it's like there is no flection, you're just pulling back the arrow in the air, and finally, killcams are great. Even after seeing the same animation many times, they're still fun to see. It gives different camera angles, and it's satisfying. Don't tell me you don't like slashing at a Forsworn's knees and decapitating them while they're on their knees with dramatic camera angles for the 100th time. I won't believe it.
      And adding danger to spellmaking wouldn't solve the problem of spellmaking. Todd said it's too "spreadsheety", it means that the system requires too much textbook knowledge. Yes, it's basically dumbing down the game in one more way (Skyrim's really obsessed with dumbing things down, I can see that because I'm not wearing any goggles that have nostalgia written on them.) But I bet many people had to read many guides just to get a grasp on how spellmaking works in previous games. Whether that's fun or not is up to the player I guess.
      Other than that, all the other complaints are perfectly valid.

    • @jacksonweseman3391
      @jacksonweseman3391 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@masterblaster2678 I see your point, and yeah ES doesn't have good combat, skyrim's is a bit more hype but at the end of the day its pretty much just swing until the enemy dies and block when the power attack comes. The main thing is the story and progression of the character, and what you can do with it, like oblivion gives you the acrobatics tree and you can use that to find a clever way around dungeons and stuff, whereas skyrim feels a bit too streamlined.
      And I like the spell making but yeah it is a bit spreadsheety. I will fully admit I do have the nostalgia goggles on, but I liked the cross of classic morrowind CRPG style and streamlined modern day RPG oblivion does.
      But I do see your points. :)

    • @siimad2988
      @siimad2988 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Master Blaster ive only just gotten into oblivion, i simply prefer the combat. i just finished skyrim earlier, too. i dont know what it is about skyrim combat, i feel like the lack of movement made spell casting boring, i preferred to dart around the room chucking fireballs at the enemy, with skyrim it just feels too formulaic; i get my fireball spell, use it a few times until the enemy gets too close, if they die before they get to me, lovely, if they dont, i swing at them with a mace. i will agree that oblivion combat *felt* more uneventful to play, but skyrim was just 2 tanks duking it out from what i played. max oblivion difficulty is more fun because i can work out the most optimal way to move around the room to prevent the miniboss hitting me. with skyrim you just have to play slightly more defensive and have better gear/more potions
      edit: didn’t articulate myself well enough
      skyrim combat: very formulaic, very character level based. legendary difficulty simply required more defensive play style and better gear. i did like the legend of zelda feel where you get stronger and ace a boss once they kill you already
      oblivion: more wacky tools at your disposal, but less eventful combat. i liked how the combat wasn’t as power based, instead you had to utilise all the wacky tools at your disposal. extreme difficulties were are more skill based and generally more fun to play because of this

    While dialog and reputation were pretty clunky in Oblivion, I have to say, at least you felt like what you were doing mattered to people. They would smile when you greeted them, or not (depending), they changed their tone, their phrasing, even what they called you because of what you had done in the world, whether in the broad scale or on the personal scale. That...is an important part of feeling like what you're doing makes a difference, and it is a shame they didn't hook into that with Skyrim.

    • @dasjugsboi
      @dasjugsboi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +123

      I agree completely. Oblivion and earlier games actually used mechanics to determine these things (such as numeric disposition, fame, bounty, NPC stats) whereas Skyrim used a much more linear procedural disposition system. NPCs felt inconsistent and only had a tiny handful of lines they'd ever say to you, most of which being completely unaffected by outside variables.

    • @gingercore69
      @gingercore69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +113

      And hearing the npcs talk to each other while walking arround... Sometimes getting quests from it, sometimes hearing them talk about your deeds... Made it such a better system! Even though Oblivion exchanges like that were often really goofy, it still made it feel more lively. I get that Skyrim is supposed to be more dour as a province, but you're absolutely right, gingercore. Dour does not equate with asocial, because neighbors are still neighbors.

      @RandomGuyScrollingDown445 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      dasjugsboi Give me one example of generic NPCs giving more lines in Oblivion than those in Skyrim. The disposition system was ditched because there wasn't a good use for it other than getting info from an NPC for another fetch quest.

    All the cities in Oblivion actually _feel_ like cities. They all have huge walls, guide chapters, multiple stores, and tons of houses, not to mention a castle for the Duke. Most cities in Skyrim lack a big wall for protection, barely have any houses (outside of Solitude), and some even lack basic stores. Some can hardly even be called a town, like Winterhold for example.
    The cities in Skyrim feel more like outposts to a city, not a city themselves.
    Oblivion also had decisions that could actually effect you in a negative way. If you do the Pilgrimage quest line and get all of the Crusader’s Relics, and then murder someone in cold blood, you lose those relics and have to re-earn them. You also can get demoted in guilds in oblivion if you break the rules. Everything holds weight.

Everything else just relies on combat. It was also too short and too easy. I miss the Mage's Guild questline from Oblivion whenever I play Skyrim and decide to be a mage. When I was trying to join the guild in oblivion, I actually felt like I was learning things and improving. Plus you had to go to every city first before you could enter the university. It just made you feel more involved with the game, like you actually had to work for something. The college of winterhold is a sad excuse for any guild type and the main questline was lame on top of the damn librarian fetch quests. You were made to feel like a worker bee, even once you reached the top.
    The one thing I give skyrim credit for with magic is the price of spells. Oblivion was a bit outrageously priced for the higher end spells.

    Got a long list, but here I go. Hopefully some of you guys agree.
    I love the feeling of being just no one special with your own backstory, no insane prophecy involved or god-like powers or anything like that. You start as a felon, then you're the Hero of Kvatch, then you're a Blade, then you're the Savior of Bruma, and finally become the Champion of Cyrodiil. You earned your title by whatever means.
    Not only that, but I feel a lot more intimate with the characters because you don't have a select string of words you have to say, you can paraphrase "Anvil attack" any way you'd like. If you hate the church, you can imagine a snide remark, "Oh, did you hear about the Anvil attack? SUCH a TRAGEDY." Or if you had family in Anvil, you can ask desperately.
    Also, zooming in on the face rather than just looking at the npc's whole body made it feel a lot more personal. You can see the expressions they make, read their lips, etc. It felt like they were focusing their attention on you alone and really giving you the time of day. And if they disliked you, their potato-faced glare stared right through your soul.
    Speaking of, each character had their likes and dislikes. It could have gotten repetitive with the minigame, but it gave more depth to the characters and made me feel like I had a silver-tongue. Oh, the ugliest stinkiest most repulsive character loves being complimented? The countess actually likes it when you intimidate her?
    Tons of quests. Hefty main quest story. Emotional connection to the characters. I don't need to say more.
    The game felt like a struggle sometimes, but its okay because you were eventually able to overcome them based on what you invested in. In Skyrim its like if you don't like your decision of being a warrior, you can just turn into a mage at will (and anything is possible if you have the enchanting tree maxed out). And while that's alright and all, its not punishing enough. If you're a mage in Oblivion, you better not get smacked and you better build up ways to prevent dying using magic. If you spec into speed and light armor, you gotta be fast and avoid getting hit, but you can still sustain some damage, etc.
    Honestly I can go on and on and on, but I'll leave it there.

      I do think RPGs should be a struggle. Feels more immersive to me at least. I loved the fact that you needed to pass skillchecks, Oblivion gave up on that already and was showing the way TES would go and went. I prefer RPGs that do such things and not just allow you to be everything and do anything. Skyrim is to much of a sandbox and not enough RPG. Many players say you can still roleplay in your head, but that's a sad excuse imo.
      But well if players prefer this than I have to accept that. I accepted it after Fo4. Bethesda won't do that anymore.

    I first played Oblivion back when I was 14 years old. I would turn on the PC at 6PM and play the game non-stop until 6AM (only during weekends of course). The game was a blast, I did everything that was possible in the game. The Knights of the Nine DLC was just a blast, and that one where you travel to another dimension (forgot the name) was so fun and different from what I already had experienced in the game. The atmosphere of the world, the quests, the characters, the cultures, everything just was breathtaking to me, I immersed myself into that world and played for hours on end. I can't quite fully explain my love for the game, its just a special one in my heart.
    So when Skyrim was announced I was ecstatic. I longed for another game that could give me the same feeling as Oblivion, and when it released, after 25 hours playing, I felt disapointed. Maybe the nostalgia glasses blocked my vision, but Skyrim didn't felt as awesome as the predecessor. Oblivion gave me a unique feeling when playing the game no other game to this day managed to do. That is why I love it so much.
    But I haven't lost faith in Bethesda. I still hope that the next TES will give me the same feeling as Oblivion. Lets hope I'm not wrong.

    For all intents and purposes, Oblivion is a true RPG. Some mechanics may be clunky, but it was a proper RPG.
    Skyrim is a watered down action adventure. That shows in the following:
    1. lack of a stat system. All you do is literally increase health, mana or stamina by 10 each level. This directly leads to
    2. lack of specialization. In Oblivion, you had to specialize. Granted, that meant not every build was easy to pull off - but everything was possible, even Jack of all trades if you knew how. In Skyrim, you eventually become godlike in everything and can level nearly infinitely.
    3. lack of engaging questlines. Skyrim may have a few, but that's really it. It's just a few compared to Oblivion.
    4. lack of world interactions. The world doesn't seem to change when you do impactful things. You nailed it with the arena, what impact it has on the world when you reach all the way to the top and you know there's more ways in which the world reacts to you and what is actually happening in the world. Skyrim has close to none of that. No racism when you play a specific race (why the hell is Ulfrik's new champion a Dark Elf... or an Argonian), no real changes in the world at large other than dragons spawning...
    5. races are arbitrary. This partially comes from the lack of racism towards the player character, but also from gameplay. Since you become godlike in every skill anyway, it doesn't matter what skills start out higher thanks to your racial bonus. Racial powers become obsolete fast, no real racial stat differences or other differences. Even not much of a height difference anymore. That being said... player customization in Skyrim is horrible compared to Oblivion.
    6. unmodded magic is downright terrible. Subpar performance compared to fighter combat styles, lack of alternate playstyles. This boils down to both how magic works AND how you have about only 50% of the Oblivion spell effects available.
    7. Enchanting is broken. Enough said. Okay, to actually expand on that, enchanting is extremely easily accessible, you only take a handful of perks because most are useless, it's much easier to enchant than in Oblivion AND you don't even have to work for it at all. Enchanting in Skyrim makes it so you walk around in fully enchanted gear basically all the time. Finding magic items is no longer special in the slightest, meaning the loot system is really only there for finding stuff to sell or more enchant effects to disassemble on the enchanting table.
    When you put all these reasons together (which are SERIOUS complaints, not "petty" reasons) and you can see how Skyrim is not an RPG which makes it inherently worse and simply not what the series is supposed to be.

      The racial abilities in Oblivion were pretty much always useful. I remember there were parts of dungeons that were underwater (The giant slaughterfish lair stands out to me in particular) so being an Argonian would save you from having to buy or make a water breathing potion or spell. Argonians can still breathe underwater in Skyrim but unless you fancy diving into the mostly featureless Sea of Ghosts, there's just no point. All of the other bodies of water are relatively shallow.
      Another thing I liked about Oblivion is that even in the beginning shops sell very expensive enchanted stuff that you can save up for, but in Skyrim pretty much everything is easily affordable.

      I would definitely consider Oblivion to be a much closer thing to an RPG than Skyrim, but calling Oblivion a true RPG would be unfair to games that allow for profound choices and where your character's skills alter the gameplay more etc.

    • @thecreator625
      @thecreator625 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@gnuling296 There are no true RPG games. No RPG can emulate the feeling of a tabletop campaign played with actual human beings. No RPG can emulate the amount of choice you have and which effects your actions have on your world and the whole adventure.
      No one has been able to properly replicate what true roleplaying is like in a video game. Not one game is a true RPG game.
      That being said, I agree that there are other games that do a much better job at being an RPG than Oblivion. TES is mostly a game in which I have fun and dabble around - and arguably, Skyrim is better for that because it has a lot more freedom and weird builds are easier to pull off.
      Add to that the fact I don't really care about the Elder Scrolls lore which basically just teaches you to be a dumb but happy citizen embracing religion as truth and you can see why that is all I do in these games. BUT, the point of the video was a direct comparison of Oblivion and Skyrim, so that was what my original comment was all about.

    • @gnuling296
      @gnuling296 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@thecreator625 I don't really know how I should respond to your first paragraph, since it's not in line with your OP. It's always relative, it's true that no programmed game can offer as many choices as a game that doesn't depend on programming.
      I would be interested to know why you think that Skyrim offers more freedom. I have rarely felt so stripped of freedom as in this game. That's because of the quest design, writing, NPCs, dialogue, guilds.
      There are games that don't require this kind of freedom (like a platformer) but an open-world "RPG" does and Skyrim failed miserably at that. There were so many irritating, immersion breaking aspects.
      I didn't make the most elaborate character but even then there were instances when there was no way for him to do a quest: like, "to progress, you need to let me enslave your soul for all eternity."

    • @thecreator625
      @thecreator625 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gnuling296 My first paragraph is a fallacy. Just like true balance cannot exist in a game (even in chess, white has 51% win rate), neither can a computer be used to construct a true RPG as we'd need to have an AI capable of fully emulating human behaviour.
      No, I never said Skyrim offers more freedom overall. Aside from some quests having alternate ways of being solved (such as using pickpocket to show Camilla that both guys who woo her are total assholes), there is little freedom in the quest lines. I'm well aware of that and it's definitely one thing Oblivion did better in comparison.
      I was talking about character builds specifically. Skyrim's lack of a class system allows for a lot of builds to work that would have struggled in Oblivion. That's partially because Skyrim is watered down compared to Oblivion (lack of a stat system means no worrying about how many stats your build needs).
      One example for my point would be a conjuration-based swordsman. In Skyrim, you don't carry any gear, just robes and stuff. You use alteration for mage armour, then conjure two swords, one for each hand. Then you can dive into melee. Needs a bit of a boost to your mana pool, but that's it. It's that easy to get started on that build in Skyrim. In vanilla Skyrim, this build is actually STRONGER in the early game than a standard fighter who relies on physical weapons, but gets eclipsed late game by a fighter with high tier tempered and enchanted gear.
      In Oblivion, you would need decent strength, fortitude, intelligence and willpower. You'd need all four of them on higher levels and not everything will be raised when you level up. Mana cost is a huge issue. And then you'd have a long wait time before you can go ahead and dive into another fight because of said mana costs. And then... normal weapons are not only easier to pull off, but more efficient, too. Unlike in Skyrim, you don't have a niche to fill when you play a conjuration-based swordsman in the same way as you would be able to in Skyrim.
      THAT is what I meant. There's a lot of examples out there for builds that work in Skyrim but don't work in Oblivion. So if weird but somehow still sensible builds are your cup of tea, Skyrim makes it a lot easier for you to do that than Oblivion does.

    my reason was the removal of the radiant ai. my favorite part of oblivion is the random awkward NPC dialog and you never know what to expect. i would even stop what i was doing if i heard conversation just to hear it out to see if it would be funny or not. thou in terms of character building i like morrowind the best because the entire time you are bassically an outsider who no one trusts and you have to earn the respect of everyone every step of the way and the final result of that at the end when you are finally recognized as the Neravarine was so satisfying.
    In skyrim this happens in about 5 minutes

      I honestly thought the color pallet in oblivion was too high fantasy. It's the only one in the whole series that is like that.
      And the visual themes are very Tolkienian and generic.
      Sure some people might prefer that but it still feels very uninspired to me especially when the games preceding and proceeding it (Morrowind and Skyrim) had very distinct and unique styles.
      Like if you showed me the concept art for a ship in Skyrim I could tell you it was for Skyrim but if you showed me the ship concept art for Oblivion it could very much be from any number of fantasy properties.

    One thing I also noticed -- in Oblivion, on the PC, you attack IMMEDIATLY when you tell the game to attack, whereas on 2 different PCs, Skyrim waits about 1/4~1/2 a second before actually attacking. Now, interestingly, this isn't a problem on the PS4 version, but that was one big thing I vastly preferred in Oblivion over Skyrim: Oblivion just seemed more responsive to my inputs.
