@@peterhugh3956 yea we add some preserved veg too to give it some sweet and sour taste to mix it up. It's nice with many things, sometimes add chestnuts too at the end. Delicious!!!
Love it all...but since I love love dried oysters, add some dried oysters to the braised pork... omg, so much umami! Watching your Grandma make me realize how I miss my elders sigh, she is so cute
There aren't enough Hakka cooking vids/channels that are dual lingual, thanks for making them! Q: The silver coloured wok that your grandmother uses what kind of material is it?
Thanks Kristy for documenting this cultural treasure - all my life i thought my mom's hakka was uniquely Malaysian but obviously not as i can understand every word and the braised pork is my favorite recipe !😊 Now having lived in the US for 40 yers it is a treasure to rediscover the common cultural heritage
My favourite Hakka dish, this is a treasure of the Hakka people. Before I left home for work in the city, I made sure I learnt how to cook this dish. Reminds me of home.
Kirsty thank you for this amazing video with your popo. The braised pork belly looks absolutely delicious, brings back many fond memories of my late mother who’d cooked this dish for the family and many other famous Hakka dish. She was an amazing cook just like your popo… this video makes me miss my mum a lot! ❤
You’re very welcome Amelia and thank you for watching! Yes it was very delicious! Aww bless your late mother, she sounds lovely and very amazing cooking Hakka dishes for your family🥰 Hakka home cooked food is seriously the best ❤️✨
Hakka Chinese language i researched dates back to BC which was an ancient Chinese Royal family language and the first ever Chinese dialect to ever be spoken in the world back then. Now a fast fading language which i feel ought to be revived as popular as Mandarin and Cantonese. Its my mother tongue my first ever language i ever spoke. Growing up i learned to speak Cantonese and English fluently too. I speak this ancient royal language with my family only who are native to Hong Kong China. I am a Hakka British Chinese born lady living in the UK like Kirsty Lo. I intend on visiting Birmingham next year to see the city and meet Kirsty Lo in person being we are both Hakka British born women and love our food. I can't wait to compare London and Birmingham Chinatowns in a podcast i intend to do in the future.
We're so glad that you documented the recipe of your por-por's authentic Hakka Mun Chu Yuk. I've shared this video to my extended Hakka family around the world. Thank you for making this video.
I love this video and I just love the positive energy coming from it. When you spoke Hakka, it brought a tear to my eye. Appreciation for our culture have often taken a back seat and it is so amazing to see that wonderful bond you have with your amazing grandmother. Hakka people are often loud, brash, bold and hearty (in a good way) and your grandma's cooking wonderfully encompasses all those wonderful values. Your recipe differs from mine a bit probably due to our difference in dialect. Yours sound similar to "sim on khek" while mine is "taipoo khek". That said, you spoke Hakka wonderfully. Send my love to grandma and wish her good health and happiness always for me. Looking forward to stealing more of her recipes (hinting hard for "niang tofu" @ stuff tofu)
Sooo delicious! Hakka braised pork belly with wood ear mushrooms & tofu is one of my faves 😋 What’s your favourite Hakka dish?!✨
