    Guys rip on other guys all the time when they play games, why is it, all of a sudden, sexism when a woman gets insulted for being shitty at a game?
    pfft, I swear, sexism is the new race card.

      +Brian Crocker So he makes a video in which a large part is dedicated to sexism in magic, but fails to mention IN THE VIDEO how the man was actually being sexist, then throws it out in the comments section like "oh yea, by the way, he said it was because she was a women." That should raise an eyebrow about the authenticity of his claim of sexism in magic.

    Boogie, _sexism_ is a subjective term, and that example you mentioned involving your wife wasn't _sexism_, just a guy being an ass based on what he perceived from the situation (considering he apologized, it might have been intended as a joke that didn't go well - or in other words, maybe he wasn't an ass).
    _Sexism_ is mostly a paranoid trap people fall into (thank you feminism!), and I'm telling you this hoping you stop yourself from falling for it. I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, hammering your head with this.
    It's just that the reality is that there are very little instances of actual _sexism_ in the western world, and most of those that people call _sexism_, in reality have alternative and more plausible explanations (like your example).
    And btw, _diversity_ is also a subjective trap that leads people to the mindset of trying to please everyone, to the potential detriment of whatever quality their product has.
    I'm a writer, and I can't think of diversity (whatever that means exactly) when I'm writing: I have to think of what makes sense in my story and to what I want to achieve (plus, I'm white, so my characters naturally tend to be white. My protagonists tend to be females, because I'm fascinated by badass hot girls - tough shit if anyone doesn't like that. They can write their own stories).

    • @dannym2359
      @dannym2359 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +skaruts if you use gender as a qualifier for why a person is bad at something, that is sexism. when you use race, it's racism. just because you don't acknowledge that fact, doesn't mean it isn't true. I'm also a white male, and when I tell stories, they are usually based on my knowledge which happens to be as a white male. that isn't racism or sexism, b/c they come from that perspective. diversity is also not subjective like you might believe, but hey, maybe you're just a troll who felt like coming out from under your bridge for the day.

    • @skaruts
      @skaruts 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Danny M *_"if you use gender as a qualifier for why a person is bad at something, that is sexism."_*
      When did anyone put that into question? I didn't, and certainly nothing I said implied not acknowledging it.
      Although sometimes things are said jokingly that some people with no sense of humor might find sexist (not referring to Boggie's case).
      In the case of Boogie, in his own words _"one guy took that as my wife being too stupid to play"_. The guy took what he perceived as *her **_stupidity_*, not *her **_gender_*, as the _qualifier_ to take his conclusions and say what he said.
      Diversity is an undefined term. I have no clue what you mean by it when you say it. Does it mean you need to include women? Anything probably already does. For some it means to _"to include more women"_. So, when is it diverse enough?
      Does it mean to include blacks? Asians? It's probably a matter of relevance. Not all fiction makes sense with "diversity". The American Gangster and The Raid:Redemption surely aren't diverse movies.
      And what about Inuits and the Amazonians? Were you even thinking of them? Should you? Why?
      If you're relying on undefined subjective terms, then it's not people trolling you, it's something wrong with your notions.

    Boogie, when someone moves in your community and starts calling everyone a sexist and misogynist and that what you're doing is wrong, you won't take to that kindly. These people have invaded who knows how many communities now with this tactic and I have yet to see a community that has turned into a more welcoming and inclusive environment. They turn into a divided war zone with two camps who hate each other.

      +LizaByte That sounds awesome. I wanna be a girl just to throw everyone for a loop then. Well, guys might call it gay or something too.)

    • @Aeroxima
      @Aeroxima 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** LOL, exactly!
      +Flashyshooter Well, it's hard to say, different people consider different things to be that. Oftentimes I don't really agree myself. Long hair is one example, some people take it one way and others the other. Painted nails are a lot easier to get away with as a girl, I feel. Certain kinds of classes or activities, like I was one of like 2 boys in school in a health and fitness class and volleyball class. I wanted to try cheer but I didn't have the balls.
      I like certain kinds of anime that might count, including the magical girl variety. Just liking the color pink can bring comments. Shaving/waxing anything that isn't the face.
      I could name a few more, especially if I count things I have no experience with, but I think that'll do for "an example." It's getting uncomfortable, lol.

    Gamer Gate people are not against diversity, they are against people shoving problems down their throats that isn't even a real problem. Diversity is completely stupid IMO. We put quotas on things, that is really just about making sure there aren't a lot of white males in a community. Gaming is the perfect example. I don't give a shit how many black people are in my community or white people or Asian people or Muslims people because I don't care about race or gender I care about WHO THEY ARE NOT WHAT THEY ARE. It's just another double standard by radical leftist that are unknowingly making more racism and sexism.

      Give over. You act as if they can't be multifaceted. As if they must have one issue, one topic that they must stick to at all times and not stray from. Even if it's to rebut their accusers.

      I only speak for myself when I say this, I'm not against diversity, but I'm definitely against *forced* diversity, because I feel like it loses any meaning if you do that. "Oh look we put this black guy/girl here, and made this woman that can kick any white guy's ass mentally *and* physically without breaking a sweat, aren't we so progressive and "with it"? Now give us your money."
      Having black characters, or female characters, or whatever the fuck kind of characters just because its the "right thing to do," and not because it benefits the story in any way, isn't good enough. Not only is that bullshit, because you're pandering to people that pay way too much attention to physical traits and project said psychological and/or emotional problem onto everyone else, but it can be an excuse to not actually make a decent character that is atypical.
      I have no qualms if people can make games (or any kind of fiction for that matter) more diverse in a natural way, by making characters that seem like actual people with real problems and aren't just there to satisfy some quota. That way you make them seem like actual human beings that you can sympathise and feel a connection with, overcoming whatever makes them different from you. In that process you hopefully break down whatever barriers more stubborn and prejudiced people might have as well. What's definitely not going to ply them is forcing shit down their throats.
      Maybe I'm mistaken, but that appears to be the general consensus of GamerGate on how they feel about diversity.
      I think if developers want a cast of mainly/only black/white male/female casts, they should be able to do that without being labelled anything incorrectly. Because some people apparently take anything and everything as an affront to their and other people's existences if they can twist it into something negative, and I don't think those kinds of people should be taken seriously.
      Basically, it creates an unavoidable stigma for a product, in the view of people like me, where it becomes hard to tell if a black character or a female character (or whatever demographic is decided as the new underdog) gets a lead role in something because that's just what the author/developer/etc. envisioned and thought was best, which is perfectly fine by me, or if it's an empty character made to serve as a sly grab at the cash of some gullible, overly-zealous types. I mean I usually give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's something that I can't help but think about since I started seeing and hearing about people being so forceful with their agendas.
      I don't know, if it takes some empty characters before creators learn to make real diverse characters, then I might not have a problem in the end, but I still don't agree with slandering people and forcing them to submit to diversity. Sorry for long comment if you aren't interested in some random guy's thoughts about a thing. Maybe somebody else will appreciate it though, or not.

    To everyone saying "that's not sexism", please try to understand the MTG community.
    Magic the Gathering is a great card game that unfortunately has problems with its image. One notable incident happened a couple years ago where a guy posted an photo album on Reddit of him at a large MTG tournament posing next to a bunch of guys' exposed asscracks. It was hilarious. But the takeaway is that a lot of the guys who play Magic really aren't that socially adept. They actually bear a lot of resentment toward those who are, and toward women. You need to understand that like all people, they have romantic desires as well. But no woman (or man, for that matter) would ever want to associate closely with an unattractive dude with hygiene problems who doesn't know how to act socially.
    Basically, MTG has become a hub for these kinds of guys. There are *very* few female Magic players, which is sad. But looking at the community, one can see why. You hear stories of guys saying "you're too pretty to play Magic" and blatantly hitting on the girl during a game. There's also stories of guys getting salty about losing to a girl, as well as Boogie's story that reflects the pervasive trend of the Magic community not taking female players seriously.
    Like it or not, Magic's reputation unfortunately keeps many people, especially women, from getting into the game. And when you have a community that treats females uncomfortably just because they are females, that is sexism.

    I own a MTG store, just because someone doesn't give you exact situations of sexism doesn't mean it's not there. I assure you, it is. I'm not saying inside a game store is akin to a 3rd world country, no. But there is a long way to go, for both genders.
    It's just a tough topic to tackle, everyone is so sensitive about it, confusion takes place and instead of progression, we instead devolve into drama, attacks and in-house fighting with each other. We spend all of our energy fighting people, instead of actually discussing any potential issues.

      Because on the internet today, in gaming circles especially, talking about sexism usually triggers people... Just look at the comments... Everyone is saying it wasn't sexism... They all apparently understood the context better than Boogey, who was actually there...
      ..and for that... they lay into him like he's running Feminist Frequency...
      Sexism, even Feminism triggers a certain type of folk.. and those folks are VERY vocal... It sucks... It shouldn't take bravery to do this, but it does... for very obvious reasons. You'd have to be living under a rock or live in a very protected bubble or circle to not see why it takes some stones to talk about sexism, online, on a gaming oriented channel.

      I haven't looked too far into Magic the Gathering but I am intrigued. Any sexism in general especially in games is just stupid. Glad to see you taking a stand for your wife and yourself. Your wife seems like a very nice person.

  • @milly69fr

    Please, Please, do not be afraid of what we say. Please speak up for what you think is right. You can not please everyone. There will always be people that assume prejudice does not exist because they do not experience it. I have played magic for 6 years.... the community is difficult at best. I have often been treated differently because I don't fit the general stereotype... if you look a certain way, or act a certain way, people often assume you aren't a "real player". Love seeing the reactions when I kick their butts.

  • @Wulfbloode
    @Wulfbloode 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I don't consider gender stereotypes in gaming to be harmful sexism. If you're a girl that goes to a gaming tournament of almost any type, the guys who make up the majority of contestants will most likely think that you're not very good. If you aren't good, well, aren't they kind of right? If you are good, kick their butts, make a point to prove them wrong, and strut your stuff!!!

    • @jenvas
      @jenvas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Alicia Capps as a guy you can just go and play, even if you only play casual and only go to have a bit of fun, but if a girl does that it proves somehow that women all are bad at mtg.
      Why do women have to prove anything? why is it ok to have such pressure on just one gender? and how is that not harmful sexism?

    • @Wulfbloode
      @Wulfbloode 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because life isn't fair, and when the majority of ppl competing in the tournament are guys, it's natural for guys to think guys are best. Nobody expects a volleyball player to be good at football, but they might be anyway. And personally, I find it fun to "prove them wrong" and kick them off the high horse.

    • @jenvas
      @jenvas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alicia Capps your volley ball / football analogy makes no sense in this context.
      Ofc it's fun to prove them wrong, but if girls who rather play casually are afraid to be judged more harshly just cause of their gender, then that is harmful for the community.

    • @Wulfbloode
      @Wulfbloode 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does make sense. If you're wearing a volleyball uniform, no one expects you to be good at football. If you look like a girl, no one expects you to be good at certain games.
      Then don't be in a tournament giving someone a free win...? Invite some friends over to play casually or something. If you play in public and can't handle ignoring a comment or just laughing at them, kindly let them know that their conclusion is wrong?

    • @AzureNebula
      @AzureNebula 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alicia Capps
      I fully agree.
      Some people can't view themselves as just a person and have to define themselves with what they've been fed about their identity. They can't base a decision on what they want, but on what they have to do because of X physical trait. If people could just view themselves as an individual they would realise that they can do anything they want. Like play MTG for example. There is no body scan at the door of tournament centres and the other people there have the ability to be an asshole just as much as the next person down the street. Treat an asshole like an asshole, but don't treat everyone like an asshole because someone else was one and they share a trait. That's called stereotyping.

      ***** True, I found it. Thanks.
      I have to wonder, however, why did that little detail escape him during the making of the video. That would have been *the detail* that would stick to his mind as the premise for his whole reasoning, and the ultimate objective point that would support the whole notion he was trying to convey.
      I'd hate to think Boggie is lying (unintentionally?) because I genuinely like the guy, but... everything he said in the video doesn't fit with that comment. Something's not right about that story.
      (It may still be that boogie misinterpreted what the guy said later, much like he seemingly readily misinterpreted the guys words as sexism - like I alluded earlier, these are easily intellectual traps)

    So telling someone that he/she is bad at Magic because he/she can't memorize the cards, is sexist....ok. So when i tell my roommate that he is bad at cleaning his dishes because he collects them in his room, its sexism? When i tell my mom that she is bad at giving me some space to breath, because she would visit me every day if she could, it would be sexist?
    Don't get me wrong but as long as it doesn't invole the sex of a person, its not sexism. Was it a douchebaggery? YES
    Was it sexism? NO.
    Maybe it was his reasoning that she is bad because she is a woman, but as long as he didn't say so you can't call him out on such a thing. Because that would mean that you would know what he things. And we already have people who call out other people for assumed thoughtcrimes.

    I've introduced a lot of people to Magic over the years, friends and girlfriends alike. I usually take them to draft after a while and I've noticed that if they're a male friend and forget a rule or something, the other play will go "Oh, you forgot your draw step" or "hm, that wasn't a very good play, you probably want to use your creature like this" but if they're a girl/girlfriend, they receive less help and usually the other player just says kinda rudely "you have to tap that to play" and is usually more focused correcting than helping them. I've been to multiple stores and experienced this, it's crazy, but it's there.

    I recently picked Magic up again after a 20 year absence. A lot has changed with the game, especially the complexity of the mechanics. What hasn't changed? In the two months I've been playing again, I've yet to face a female player. The local shop I play at is a great environment with very respectful and friendly people, but not a single female plays there. I think the image of Magic needs a 'nudge', like you said. The Spellslingers series over at Geek & Sundry with Day[9] is a great example of how to make Magic more accessible to all people, whether, young or old, male or female. Hopefully, we'll get there. The more diversity in the game, the more fun and casual Magic can be.

    Don't just think about leafy greens salads. Bean salads and pasta salads can also be really good for you. To maximize the benefits fo a pasta salad, use whole grain pasta. Beans, in general, are a great food that you should eat regularly, and it's really easy to toss some vinegar, hot sauce, a dash of sugar, some herbs, garlic, and add a bunch of other veggies to make a great bean salad. Plus, you can always make bean burgers or burritos with leftovers. Potatoes are also really good, although they've gotten a bad rap because of their carbohydrate count (which isn't really even that high). A 250 gram potato (with skin) will give you over 1,000 mg of potassium, which is roughly 30% of the Recommended Daily Intake. Add a side of a cup of cooked spinach and you now have roughly 55% of your RDI for potassium. Potassium is incredibly important and it's something that most people do not get enough of. For a complete diet of micronutrients, like zinc and iron, eat a serving (typically 1 cup) of fortified bran flakes (Total or any generic brand cereal is fine, just make sure it's fortified) and use raisins or any other fruit to add sweetness.
    A great website that I've used to tweak recipes to be healthier is MyFitnessPal.com. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way) Their Recipe counter does a great job of showing just how much nutrients and calories are in each serving of your recipes. It's helped me design recipes like a bean and spinach salad that contains 100% of your RDI for potassium while having a very low caloric count.

My wife had an elf deck that she made to have fun and mess around. well to make a long story short she went 3/2/3 that night, first time ever at FNM. her last match was with the stores best player, she beat him and when he made the comment I helped her build the deck and told her how to play it. the store got quite. (everyone thought I would do something too to him for being rude.) my wife stood up very slowly and professed the true. she made the deck herself, learned how it worked and you just got beaten by a women. we left after that with a round of applause from the store owner Eli.

I turned around to him and said, "So how many of these so called stupid woman have bet you that go to this store ha?" I never had any problems with sexism at the old place I played magic, but I just moved and now I'm kind of nervous. I have social anxiety so I often look a bit less intelligent than I am when I'm meeting new people, plus I've only been playing the game for a few months, and I'm a casual... Whew. Hopefully it goes fine.

    It's crazy how sexism is still a problem in magic. I haven't played in a tournament for quite a while now, but I remember that it was always present. Even if it was subtle.

    I am crazy for even starting my channel, there is no way I can compete with people like yourself. But you know what I am going to try, I am going to get better, I will find my unique style, and if I get popular great if not, don't care I am having fun playing games, recording, editing, uploading and being awkward on the internet.

    I think it is crazy that a few months ago I commented on one of your videos asking about whether you had seen DDP Yoga and then you mentioned it in this video. Afterwards, I search your channel for DPP and found that you have multiple videos for it already and a couple, I had already seen. So it's crazy that I think I may have actually been introduced to your videos through your DDP Yoga reaction to Jared and then I completely forget that even happened.

    I'm so ducking happy that people are spitting out this shit. There is hardly any sexism in the western world. You can't force creators to adhere to your never ending list for diversity, and you can't always be jumping at shadows for sexism and shit whenever something less than friendly happens to a girl. Enough of this victimizing game!

    As someone who used to play YuGiOh semi-competitively, I actually know sexism in card games all too much. At our old YGO locals, it was shared with the Magic group. I have to say, one thing I always pointed out was how much nicer the Magic players were than the YGO players; they most definitely didn't have any problem with prejudice in any way; they group was really varied. But the YGO lot? We were very... "cis white male" to use that awful term. Not all of us were horrible people, but a lot of the group really was. Back then, I used to take a big group of friends along, which included females and not-white people and I always felt horrible how other members of the group treated them. Heck, it was this that made me quit playing the game competitively in the first place. Now I just play casually on a Sunday on Twitch. But, to me, it's just baffling as to why a group of people would belittle others who just want to play the same game as them. They are trying to enjoy the same hobby as you, why would you try to alienate them? I dunno, it's just crazy to me, but that's just me 2 cents into the topic.

    I have personally experienced a lot of sexism in MTG, to the point where I don't go out and play with people, because I just can't deal with the way people look at me like I don't belong or comment about me when they think I can't hear. I love the game, but the community is sexist, and I have been told explicitly that I can't play because I'm a girl, and it's crazy, and fucking bullshit.

    Not to stir shit, but if your wife was letting someone build her deck for her IN FRONT OF OTHER PLAYERS, I can see why the other players would think that she wasn't as skilled. It's not sexist.

    Loved Doom. my only complaint would be the amount of times I've entered "horde mode" in the game. I would have liked to see the demons spread out better but that's about it. I'd like to see the future of snapmap too. the idea is good, they just need to add the ability to make multiple maps on one set , similar to some wads that have multiple maps

    To avoid a disastrous MTG Gamergate conflict, we just need to find a way to explain to Feminists why the victim complex culture and the oppression olympics are toxic and self-destructive without sounding like a mansplainer or a misogynist. aka mission impossible.
