      All cats avoid eye contact it makes them uncomfortable to stare at something directly, it is seen as a challenge of sorts or a " you are not wanted here". Always blink and look away when looking at your cat.
      Cat's prefer the outdoors as their litter box and will only use a litter box if they have no other choice or can't go outside.
      This does NOT mean your cat doesn't love you, you just need to know cat's and their behaviour properly.

      Every behavior listed could indicate issues that the owner can help resolve due to physical illness or misunderstanding on the part of the owner:
      1. Avoids eye contact/leaves room when you come in. - Cat has trust issues or is frightened by something the owner is doing? These are both things that can be worked on.
      2. Flicking their tail because they're annoyed by your presence. -- Owner may not realize that their own behavior is to blame--not understanding the tail flicking that indicates that the cat is has become overstimulated by petting
      3. Excessive scratching. - Not enough scratchers about to discourage scratching of furniture?
      4. Litter box issues: go outside it to do their business. - Illness, dirty litterbox, intimidation of other cats in the household?
      5. Hiding frequently. -- Cat has trust issues or is frightened by something the owner is doing? These are both things that can be worked on.
      6. Lack of response to affectionate gestures. - Owner not understanding how cats express emotions?

He was a great cat, he adopted me one night while I was making a deposit for my job. I left the car door open while I went to the drop off chute. It’s possible that your cat didn’t like the type of litter being used. Too much perfume or didn’t like the way it felt on their feet. If it’s mother didn’t teach your cat how to use a litter box, the cat may just not have know what the box was for.

    • @TearfulZorua
      @TearfulZorua 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      I think thats more the cat preferring the texture of grass to the texture of whichever litter you used. That or it somehow became trained to do its business outside, and thus never used the box. I doubt it meant the cat disliked you, because it clearly alerted you when it needed to go and when it was ready to come back inside. Infact seems they acted more dog like than cat like, did the cat perhaps grow up around dogs? If so they might have gotten the habit from observing the dogs.

      I have a cat who absolutely hates using the litter box. He will cry his eyes out to be let out to do his business and only uses the box when there's noone home and he can't hold it anymore. According to the vet, he just doesn't like the litter we use.
      His sister on the other hand refuses to do her business outside and will always ask to be let back in so that she can use the litterbox. 😂

    I've been fortunate enough to love cats and be loved by cats since I was a toddler. Myself at 2 years grabbed the neighborhood cat in a hug. The cat just waited to slide out of my arms and just looked at me. My grandma who was watching, said I looked down and the cat blinked, put her head to mine and just waited. Apparently I just put my forehead to hers and the cat was just patient with me while I tried to pet her. That's pretty much been the tone of my life whenever I encounter cats.

      I am known as the Cat Whisperer among my friends. More times than I can count I have been at someone's house for the first time and spotted a cat. I would ask about the cat and would be told something to the effect of "You'll never get near them, they are scared of (or "hate") everyone. 100% of the time I would be petting and interacting with their cat within 20 minutes and the owners always told me how incredible that was and how their cat has never done that before with anyone. I've been fortunate enough to have kitties that loved me for decades. All you have to do is pay close attention to their body language and know what their different signs mean. They are speaking to you, even if they aren't using our words. Just pay attention.

      thats why cats are best. i am not really good with living things, autistic, but cats even the most spicey and i allways get along. i guess it is bc of my autism i am very sensitiv to not overhelm them when making contatc, giving them the opportunity to decide if they engage. also we share a deep disgust towards all non-feline lifeforms. most ppl think dogs can read ppl but dogs are so easy to fool, my kitty on the other hand never failed to judge ppl in seconds.

    Heres my cat story: I got a cat last night, i came out of my room and dad had a small kennel and looked stressed. I asked him what happened and he said "I rescued him" i thought it was a squirrel at first, then a rabbit, and finally a cat. He was in a bush on a busy interstate half a state (U.S) away, and i watched him while my dad got a better carrier for him. We havent had a pet since 2016 so i cried, and played soft music. He was purring SO loud, mostly because he got some food for the first time in however long. Then my dad took him to the vet the next morning as it was 8pm when he got home and he wasnt near death. Turns out the bite on his neck was from a fly who laid eggs in the wound, he had fleas, and his ear had been clipped because he was actually dumped in the woods after being neutered. Hes 6-8 weeks old so not agressive, but he also doesnt know a lot yet. Im so blessed we found him. His name is Kiwi!

      My cat is healthy and in her prime. She's just not too bright. Every single day, several times a day, she manages to get her one rogue claw stuck in one rug or another. But she still hasn't met a rug she doesn't want to roll herself around on while playfully batting with her paws. Then, when she's stuck, she doesn't even miaow. Just waits to be noticed. I only keep her because obviously someone's got to look after the daft thing.

      My Lucy is an independent girl. She doesn’t want me to help her, usually. She has proven to me that she can do it herself!!! With hisses and being vocal about that when I go to help her. After trying, then backing off, she does it. Only a couple of times has she reluctantly let me help her when she knew she needed it but was mad at me for her getting her claw stuck. I know now when it happens and I ask her if she’s stuck, she knows she better do it before momma tries to help. I think I know how as I’ve done it but I’d love to know if there’s a secret to doing it without hurting her. I try to just lift the claw out of the item but she hisses and cries out but she is a drama queen. She doesn’t seem like she’s in any pain afterwards as I’m very careful about it.

    My-year-old cat slaps me in the face with her tail for attention when I'm reading or on the phone. She has this impish look on her face when I pretend to be indignant. I'll move away a bit and she'll readjust her aim and smack me again! She gets my attention and that leads to me usually initiating a full-on play session. I've no doubt she loves me! I'm the only human she's ever interacted with except at the vets' office. She purrs, gives nose kisses and initiates cuddles a lot and kneads my stomach or thigh when we're getting ready to go to sleep. She's learned not to scratch me or the furniture and no longer tears up or knocks things over intentionally. She still loves climbing up high and hiding in weird places and jumping out to scare me. She was appatently an orphaned feral kitten that my 17 y.o. fixed toms found somehow out here in the country and broight her to me to raise when she was just 10 weeks old. They are devoted to her and she to them. She gave them a new lease on life and they've tried to protect her and teach her cat skills. ❤

    Our cat will outright slowly swish his tail from side to side when you speak to him. He doesn’t do it for no reason either. He does this for attention, because it’s often accompanied by him meowing and marching around. He seems to really love verbal praise, not just physical touch. If you either don’t give him attention or stop giving him attention, he will turn and look at you and start meowing again. Yes, my cat is a literal prima donna who knows how cute he is, and knows how to use it to his advantage.

    If you move or add a new member to the family, give your cat time to adjust. After all, you can't simply move back or remove the new family member. However, if you give your cat time to adjust at their pace, they will return to their normal behavior. All my cat did was hide on these two factors. She eventually came out and started being social again. I did not rush her to adjust, I gave her time and made sure she knew that her needs were still going to be meant.

    My parents’ rescue cat is very nervous and easily stressed (she had multiple broken bones from her awful previous owner, so I think a lot of it is trauma-related) and she only uses the litter box half the time. Simple things like noisy wind or a loud truck driving by will make her stop using the litter box! But she always runs to my dad for comfort, and when she’s feeling vulnerable she naps on his lap. Most people make her anxious, but we know she loves him at least 💜

    I was sure my boy hated me in the 1st 2 years of our relationship. He would let me start petting him (and, I tried to limit it as I wasn't sure what his threshold was) and he would suddenly turn on me and grab me with his claws on the sides of my head. He didn't do much damage except to my feelings. He was supposed to be my emotional support animal. I began to make a loud (not too loud) ha sound in his face. After a while of that, he began to stop and think about whether he really wanted to do that. He began to stop. One day it was like a switch had been flipped and he turned into a big cuddle bug. He loves getting kisses. We head bump, rub noses, and do the slow blinks. I think he was afraid I would take him back to the shelter. There was no way I could do that as I feared he might be put down. Like I said, he's my cuddle bug. The girl I had before was with me for 16 years and was 17 when I had to let her go. It was so hard to do. I hope my boy and I have a long time together. He will probably be my last cat as I'm getting older. I've made plans for someone to take him if I go first. @lynzioliver-musto4718 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very much like many of the "problem kids" from foster homes, they are afraid to become attached to somebody because they believe that person will let them down. Then they misbehave because, if it's going to happen anyway, they may as well get it over with. It happens with children, cats, dogs and other animals too. It's a tragic self-perpetuating circle of behaviour but, once they realise that they are loved, as you have learned, it is worth all the effort.
      Thank you for making the world a better place for your Mr B.

    • @lynzioliver-musto4718
      @lynzioliver-musto4718 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's interesting that it took around two years for him to accept you. I've had cats all my life and one thing I have learned is that, although a cat can adapt to a new situation very quickly, it takes about 18-24 months for them to become comfortable with it. If you are aware and watching for it, you can see when they reach that point. They seem so much more relaxed and it is, as you described, almost like flicking a switch or pressing a button.
      So that would be my message to anybody who is struggling with an unsettled cat. Be patient. It's not a quick fix but with love and patience you'll get there!

      I adopted an abandoned kitten at about eight weeks. She seemed to start to warm to us quickly but then as the months passed she's becoming less interested in human contact and will run if I'm walking by. She will usually tolerate being petted if she's lying on an elevated surface so maybe she's fearful of being stepped on when she's on the ground and more vulnerable. She seems to love the dogs in our household and rubs against them often. But she's small for her age and there are two older cats in our family so she might also feel like she's at a disadvantage, though she definitely has proven to be the aggressor whenever any conflicts arise. She's now nine months old and I've almost given up the idea of her ever becoming a loving cat, but I'll keep trying to reach out to her and hopefully one day she'll actually enjoy human interaction and seek it out. I've never experienced such a standoffish personality, but she still deserves a safe environment to live out her life. So we just try to accept who she is and adjust our expectations. I wish I could afford a behavioral therapist for her...or snag a visit from Jackson Galaxy. Such mysterious creatures, they are. :-)

      @@natsomething0 She may become more affectionate over time, just based on a couple of our (too many) cats! Particularly the first one and eldest, Cricket, who played herself off as a little sweetie at the shelter, only to get home and prove herself feisty and somewhat standoffish. She is a jerk to this day. But a jerk who has divulged that, deep down, she is (not so) secretly a snuggle-bug (just so long as the other cats don't see!!)- she likes to curl up in a lap and knead! She's gotten more and more snuggly and affectionate over the years (but is definitely still feisty and thinks she should be waited on hand and foot lol). Either way, best of luck! It's lovely that she has a safe, loving home, regardless of whether or not she comes back around the snuggledom!

Try upgrading to ‘Purina One’ canned & dry cat food, ‘Hills Science Diet’ is good too. ‘Indoor’ labeled cat foods are lower calories. Keep your cat Indoors, protect them from traffic and Predators and traffic. Especially around night
    Have an older kitty? bring it in for a ‘Senior Blood Panel’, you’ll see possible health concerns, while it’s early. 🐱 🐾

    Just remember that dog love and cat love are two different things, and if trying to measure how much your cat cares by measures of dog attitudes and tolerances, then you're sadly going to be disappointed-what IS a reality is that if they trully dislike you, they will leave your company and find another place to go. They're extremely independent that way. Dogs seek to keep you pleased. Cats are content to let you be yourself, even as you cry or get angry. They will sit with you. And as long as their human takes good care of them, they usually respond in kind. If a cat is distant, even as your being kind, it is likely they they are not used to the kindness and are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Averting your gaze and tapping tail doesnt necessarily mean they don't like you. It could very easily mean they're agitated at something else, and you just happen to be there
    Also note that you're not confusing refusal to get along with them just not having a good day that day

    Several of my cats bonk their head on me. I don't believe it was marking me, but more like a kiss. My Tabbs believes in rough love. She'll launch herself at your shoulders from up to 6-8 feet away, sinking her claws in to make sure she doesn't fall, and beats snd rubs her head against us (even harder when she's in heat);
    and my Sammy (favorite ever!) would run up to me and stand on her hind legs and pit her front paws in my leg (and sometimes stretch). That was hugs from her.
    I also had a bobcat / domestic cat hybrid that was INCREDIBLY smart. (And agile. He could eat with forks and spoons, and would hold onto my finger when we took naps together). I'd say "Spooks, kisses", and he'd run over to me and bump his head against my mouth.

Yes, he walks on a leash, but I'm not going to stand out there for more than 20-30 minutes. I go down the hall to eat, and he is okay with that activity now, but if I'm talking and not eating, he cries. My cat will pet me at times. However, he will put his paw on my lips if he wants me to go away or shut up. Overstimulation, usually when I pet him, leads to him jumping off of the bed. Also, bedtime is supposed to be at ten for the human. She must wake up before seven... yes, master. The home has breakfast at that time, and he knows. He eats first. II have to clean each bowl in the morning, or he will vomit all over my carpet, too. On the plus side, he tells me he loves me all the time with those eyes and kisses. Keiko loves to snuggle. The cat doesn't always like when I do it. The creature knows I am not a cat. The no no spot is on his rear. Strangers can scratch that and he'll arch. He gives me a warning meow if I do. We've been together for 13 almost 14 years.

      Mix their old food 50/50 with the new to,give their tummies time to adjust. Also, if you can, feed small portions 3 or 4 times a day instead of once or twice. That should help. If they still gulp their food, you might get some puzzle feeders from Amazon. Silicone trays with bumps and creases to help them slow down whilst eating.

    We called the slow blinking “Love beams”. Cat’s are surprisingly good at communicating. We used to joke that they communicated with telepathy because all they had to do was look at anyone of us and we knew what it was that they wanted.

    I have a high-anxiety cat who grooms himself a lot. Otherwise he's pretty chill. My other cat, who I just adopted two days ago, is very affectionate and friendly. Both of them get overstimulated pretty easily and tend to bite when they do. Not hard enough to break skin, just enough to make the petting stop. I adore both of them. ❤

    I have two cats at my parent's, Maja and Lizzy. Maja has been our family cat for 11 years now, we know her since she was one week old and she moved in with us at 10 weeks old. Lizzys story is more complicated and not as nice as Majas. We've had her for almost seven years, and she's 8 now. We've known her longer, she was my older sister's cat, and my sister had to give her up after a messy breakup and a spontaneous move into another city, and we suspect that my sister's ex hurt her when he was alone with him.
    She still has some trauma and strong boundaries, but she's generally a happy girl. Was a long way to earn her trust, buf 100% worth it.
    I started university in 2020, though I mostly had online classes at first. Once I had more offline classes and had to spend more time in the dorm room instead of living at home all the time, Maja got so stressed that she started to rip out her belly fur. She's fine now, other than a chronical respiratory infection that doesn't bother her much.
    And Lizzy always expects me to cuddle with her on the couch when I'm home. Gonna see my girls tomorrow, and in the time I'm in the city I volunteer at an animal shelter, spending time with the cats there.

    Those are not signs that "your cat doesn't love you”, they are signs that your cat is experiencing stress or discomfort. If YOUlove your cat, by observation you will be able to determine the cause of this discomfort and eliminate it. Your cat will thank you for your attention.

    I've known cats that literally wag their tails in excitement like a dog, usually during play. You really have to know what mode the cat is in as to whether it's a good or bad thing.
    Another sign that people say means a cat doesn't like you is if you pick them up they want back down, or if you put them in your lap and they hop off quickly. Cats are very picky about who can do what with them. A family member's cat tolerates me picking her up for a little bit but I'll let her down when she starts wanting down. She won't lay in my lap or on my chest unless she chooses to and she does that very rarely. I have tremors and uncontrollable muscle twitches, thankfully usually small ones, so I don't blame her for not wanting to deal with that.
    One thing I've got going for me with animals, especially cats and dogs, is my insanely high tolerance means they can be rough and go full force with me. If you've ever had a cat grab your hand with both front paws and sink their claws in you can probably understand why people don't like it. It doesn't bother me at all. My friends had dogs that would literally run full speed and jump at me to play. They would chase me and I'd chase them. One of my roommates dogs figured out he didn't need to be gentle with me and he went crazy wanting to play everytime I went outside with him. He freaking loved it! I've ended play sessions with cats and dogs with my arms and hands covered in scratches, then someone else plays with them and they are super gentle.
    The average pet will figure out very quickly who they can play with and how, they aren't stupid like most people think. Even my mom was surprised when she got a new kitten and she would attack my hands in play and sink her teeth in with me, but as soon as someone else tried to play with her like that she just stared at them and refused to play like that.

    cats are not "intricate", they are "sophisticated." We use these words often when referring to the design or architecture of something. Italian marble statues which portray lace cloth on the individuals are both intricate and sophisticated. There's a reason for that. Intricate is Included *within* sophisticated. While intricate speaks to the quality and volume of complicated and detailed facets, "sophisticated" speaks to the build of the intricate (complicated and detailed) components. Cats are more than intricate, they are sophisticated. There is a reason, logice, and even beauty in how they are built. "intricate" doesn't cover all that.

    There is a behavior where cats dramatically won't look at you, keep turning away very fast in other directions... and this is a game they will play with their mom and littermates, and some play it with humans. It actually means they trust you enough to look away. You're supposed to "chase" the eye contact. There is also a game adult cats play with kittens where they thrash their tail like they are mad, often looking at the kittens and whacking them... it's hunt training. We call it "kitten fishin." We have a 21 year old cat who gets excited when he sees young cats because it is his favorite thing in the world, and also does it to humans. He's also dedicated to the "my paw is on top" game.
    Cats are from a very small group of animals that "play act" with each other, adults will pretend to be scared of tiny kitten hisses, or ignore them, or play dead or asleep, etc. That's why it's important to try to learn more signals than just ears and tails, because cats can lie, basically.

    My cat was been slow blinking at me less for awhile, I realized I was petting him more roughly that I used to and I've been making an effort to change that and he has been seeking me out for slow blinks and kisses. Also we have been decluttering and organizing and he has started scratching a leather dining chair. It's good to know it's his way of relieving anxiety. Now I'm going to put a scratching post next to the chair, I hope that will give him an appropriate alternative since I need to continue decluttering
