I have a theory about these talking cats who seem to replicate some human speech. Cats can replicate vocalizations made by their prey animals in the wild. This is true of all cats, large and small. I believe our little domesticated friends are using that skill to replicate our speech sounds because they have figured out we think it is awesome, cute, adorable, etc and binds us to them more. Which means we will continue to feed them, shelter them, water them, and love them. It increases their survivability as a species.
That’s a fascinating theory, and it actually makes a lot of sense. Cats are masters of adaptation, and if mimicking human speech gets them more attention, love, and food, it’s a smart survival tactic. Their ability to "meow" is already something they developed to communicate with humans, so learning to copy certain sounds seems like a natural next step. It’s yet another reason why cats are the ultimate strategists!
@logiemaydioso2787 my dog won’t bite my dad, mom, or my brother but ofc he tries to get my flesh when I try to love on him lol. Typical German Shepherds i guess…
My cat didn't speak but he knew about 200 words. He was a feral Kitten that I rescued myself. I came home from work to my neighbor telling me to save my cat and pointing to the attic window. I looked up and there he was half of his body out of the window with his paws on the decorative ledge. I thanked her, she was severely disabled and standing on the sidewalk waiting for me was probably extremely painful. I gave her and her children a large batch of chocolate chip cookies - the only thing I can bake that comes out edible. I then yelled to him "get back inside" and he seemed to be thinking about it so I said get back in or no treats, ever. He went back inside at that threat. I rushed to the attic and shaking my head I asked out loud that "How the hell did you do that." The hole in the screen was about the size of a pencil eraser when I left that morning. At my question he decided to show me his technique. He grabbed the screen with his teeth, pulled back the screen tearing, once it tore enough he then rolled it under. I didn't have the heart to withhold treats. He was sad when I wouldn't allow him to play in the attic, but became really happy when I made a screened viewing box (using the heavy duty pet screen) then perched it on the window frame and he could climb in and from that perch he could see the entire neighborhood. The saddest time for him was when winter came and I had to take it out of the window. He got lots of treats then. I wish I had known that cats could talk when he was a kitten because I would have taught him. It was him and me and I talked to him like I would a roommate. Sorry about the length, he passed away in April of last year and I still miss my roommate.
Sorry you lost your friend. My cat is like that, she understands over 25 commands. She says,"Hello?" as she roams the house looking for other people, or us. She has a "trill" for everything, especially if I ask if she wants a brushing, or I tell her we're leaving.
My thought too when I saw that. No way a reaction to that would be that subdued even if it was the 100th time the cat did that. A treat or something. At least cat eye contact
I think there's definitely a phenomenon whereby certain cats can/will alter their voices to more closely mimic human speech, even if they're not actually saying anything specific. I once adopted a cat who, rather than meowing to get attention, would make a noise that sounded for all the world like an adult human saying 'hello' - which spooked everyone in the household. 😆 Over time, he actually started to make the noise less often, and increasingly used more normal-sounding chirps and meows to communicate. I have no idea what caused the change, but my running theory is that he might've at one point had to really strain for attention from the humans he lived with, and the ventriloquism was part of how he did that - but once his situation changed, it became less necessary.
i do know through research that the only thing that prevents cats from actually fully speaking our own language is that one part of their brain that stops them, but if it were gone they can speak our langauge. gonna guess part of that one part in their brain is somewhat gone to be able to mimick it but they do understand words as studies shown just like dogs understand words as well think of it like a baby or a toddler you can only hold so many words, but you learn to know what the words mean. hell if I said to my cat right now that if he wanted to go to the vet, he darts out the door. or if I say you want treats he immediately perks up and he def. perks up to brushie. and i have taught him to sit and lay down by teaching him much like you'd teach a child. I believe they DO understand to an extent but sadly still lack total knowledge obviously like we do. they don't have full capabilities like studies and all that lol. but they sure are learning throughout the ages, and to be honest its adaptability too since they can mimic birds, so why not mimic and understand humans so that way their survival rate goes up seeing how who wouldn't take in a cat that knows how to say I love you, or i don't know or hi common words that they can speak if that one part of the brain wasn't stopping them from fully speaking entirely. so they have some idea what's going on. hell I once told my cat he was adopted, never even heard the word before....and he was in a deep sleep. I said it to him, he yawned he looked at me horribly got up and sat in the kitchen facing the wall and would NOT look at me for a few hours....I never felt so horrible in my life lolol
My cat walked into my office while I was playing Fortnite and terrified me by saying “hello” at me and I screamed and my brother asked if I was ok and I had to embarrassingly admit that I was scared by a cat.
That’s hilarious! Your cat probably planned that perfectly, knowing it would get the biggest reaction. Cats have a way of catching us off guard, and the fact that it said "hello" just makes it even better. Sounds like your cat is a master of comedic timing!
It's wonderful that you appreciate each cat's unique personality. They truly are gorgeous in their own special ways, bringing joy and love with every paw step.

I had a cat that would say, "Hi, how are you?" to anyone he would meet. I had three people show up once, and he went to each one and asked that. He said other things as well, and basically was able to speak at equivalent of a 4 or 5 years old child.
