The beauty of this build comes from how simple, clean and rich the piece feels. You took what could be, ostensibly, just a modified bookshelf and made it into a unique and warm piece of elegance. Nice work!
Do it using biscuit joints. They are fantastic for alignment and also strong. There is also metal biscuit connectors as well which means you can glue the edge and then click the biscuits together that acts like a clamp without actually using clamps. Knapp makes biscuits that can do this. lamello does as well but their biscuit jointers are very expensive (but are amazing).
Excellent work Mr Brown. Stumbled across your vids quite by chance...I reckon I have pretty much done the lot in 3 days! As a Hi- Fi buff I was intrigued by this build and have to say sir, "well done"!
Excellent build Keith.Great finish with the plywood as it offers loads of variations and contrasts in patterns.Always enjoy the videos with a glass of vino after finishing for the week!
I know you probably don't have one but using a 1/2 router to cut your dados is a lot quicker and leaves a nice consistent finish. Trend sell router cutters that are the same diameter as ply/mdf. Great vid 👍
Been watching your vids for a while now mate and gotta say your work is getting better an better. An I love the no nonsense approach, just simple an easy to follow. An what's best is your British so you use stuff I can actually find rather than weird American stuff. Too many America youtubers, thanks for the great content!
A very nice hi-fi unit, and very well made, you're getting better with each job,I'm sure that you will become a very good carpenter given the amount of thought you put into each project, it gets 5 ☆ from me,take care Keith and be happy
Have you ever considered using pocket holes ? After watching some TH-cam videos where they have been used, I took the plunge and bought one. It's been really useful and you can make a nice feature of the plugs that cover the screws by using different types of wood as a contrast. I have even put holes in where there were no pocket screws needed in a row of three, and used a plug of the same wood that I had soaked in a coloured wood dye as a feature in the middle of a small video unit I made for my niece and she was over the moon with it. The price has come down considerably over the last couple of years and you can now pick a single hole unit up from Amazon for as little as £3.99, inc. free postage (it takes about 2 weeks to get stuff from China these days as the Chinese postal system has begun daily international mail flights now to the UK, because us Brits are buying that much stuff from there). It is better if it's a double hole system as you usually need double screws for any joint.
Preferences are interesting and funny. I don't like the look of dowels at all, haha. Guess it's just not common here. Next time I would wait with the middle boards for later. No need to do glue everything at ones. Anyway, wonderful project as usual, nice build!
I really dislike the look of construction plywood, especially when finished in a dark color with that kind of early/late contrast, but this is a nice project.
@@bighands69 If you like the look of stained softwood plywood, yes. But I know what it looks like in-person, as I do a lot of woodworking. This is no slight against the project -- I just don't like that kind of finish on that kind of wood.
Excellent build! One comment on the design: the storage is on the bottom shelf, unlike your previous build where the storage was open at the top. If the client has 30 albums from back to front, would they have to remove a chunk, about 10-2 albums in order to access the albums in the rear of the cabinet?
Great video, superb build, but putting your deck on top of your speakers is a recipe for disaster unless he likes very quiet music. He will need to move either the deck or the speakers otherwise you will get terrible vibrations through the stylus. Personally I would put the speakers on the wall either side of the room to make the best of the stereo separation. Keep up the good work.
Is finding/getting the records out a bit awkward with it being on the bottom and face forward? Maybe that's the place to put just the bunch you're currently into while you keep your main storage somewhere else. Instead of lying all over the floor where my current favs live ... Does look nice.
Keith. Have you done a “how to” on sketch up. Or can you recommend one. Just downloaded / signed up for it and haven’t got the foggiest. Any help as ever would be massively appreciated. Dave
I haven't, unfortunately those videos don't perform so well, but I think Chris Salomone and Jay Bates have some, also Gosforth Handyman has some on his member area platform
Great video. Just a random question, i am fairly new to woodworking with sheet goods and hardwoods i usually just use reclaimed wood. So i gues my question is where do i get hard wood and sheet goods ect for a competitive price. I live in wales by the way thanks a lot
WoodworkingForThe Welsh Hi, I get mine from construction timber yards or diy shops. I've just found a place that sells oak sleepers so busy using those at the moment, great fun!
+WoodworkingForThe Welsh hard wood is difficult to come by for a good price unfortunately, I don't know of any decent places. I get sheet goods either from my local reclamation yard (as they stock new sheets sometimes) or my local timber merchants. The timber merchants is much better quality stuff but slightly more expensive
hi Keith, was the depot a merchants chain? I have been trying to find cheaper than Baltic birch ply that is decent and not that awful Chinese reddish one... many thanks, Evangelos
Rag 'n' Bone Brown thank you! that explains it... it is remarkable how limited access to a decent variety of plywood is here in London... at least for 'browse and buy' as one would do in the US in what they call the big box stores over there! I have been looking at decent quality poplar ply that is accessible and substantially cheaper than Baltic birch, but no luck. Thanks for taking the time to respond, and many thanks for sharing your content. Evangelos
+dan barrow hi Dan, mine is a Draper bought secondhand, it's an ok tool but I filmed a video testing biscuit joints today and it was surprising result! Next weeks video will explain!
Good to know! I work in a hardware store here in Australia on Saturdays so I get to watch some of your videos for tips before going to work! I've recommended those drills to lots of people and all seem to be very happy! Thanks!
really nice turntable, completely wasted tho because of all the vibrations from the speakers feeding back into the cartridge, when you place your turntable on the same furniture as your speakers
The volume would need to be extremely high for it to actually affected the arm and then the cartridge and needed. It would need have extreme vibration.
@@bighands69 This turntable uses an carbon tonearm because it's stiffer than an aluminium one and has less ressonance, at that exetremely high level of vibration avoidance the speaker placement most definitetly is the biggest limiting factor in this setup. But I wouldn't phrase this nearly as salty nowadays, 2 years later, it's a genuinely impressive setup, even though you could improve the sound for no cost, or get a similar sound for a bit less money.
No complaints about the quality of the wood work here, but that setup will not sound very good. There's no stereo separation and having speakers in the cabinet like that will transfer vibration to the turntable, further decreasing sound quality. As much as possible, you want your listening position and your speakers to form an equilateral triangle. If that is all the space your friend has available, then he would get a much better experience using a headphone focused setup. Just my two cents.
Thank you!! As an audiophile myself, I wondered what the clients focus and goal was with the speaker arrangement. Jukebox style perhaps? The build is elegent and inexpensive but as you thought, either a good thing slab of concrete or even granite would have helped dampen vibration on the turntable it was mounted on. Since the floors are wood, dampening becomes more essential due to vibration transfer from the wood. Good catch though! And despite the consideration a beautiful and functional cabinet!!
The beauty of this build comes from how simple, clean and rich the piece feels. You took what could be, ostensibly, just a modified bookshelf and made it into a unique and warm piece of elegance. Nice work!
Great build Keith..And a really useful tip regarding the oil before the wax. Regards, Scott
Awesome diy job, thats the spirit. Speakers, despite being called bookshelves have no business being locked up inside a shelf.
Your projects keep getting better and better.
That wax + that woodgrain = serendipitous wood magic.
Great, great build. That really came alive when you added that finish. Well done mate.
I like the way the stain turned out...Another good build...
I watched this and was thinking it would look ugly but when you applied the wax OMG that was stunning, NICE job Well Done.
+Robert Sives thanks!
Masterful Work, thank you for allowing me to be educated. I am not a Wood Worker.
Greetings from The Philippines !
This has given me some great ideas to create a media center for my turntable. Thanks!

+Jamie Ollivant
Challenge with a router is keeping the cut level of both sides. You can create a router jig to do that but you will need to build it.
Yet another great video Keith, "plane" and simple but end result was classic ragnbonebrown. Good to see vinyl and player in harmony. Happy days
+Chris Cannon thank you!
Oil then wax was definitely the right option! Great job Keith.
+Stuff I Made thanks! Good luck organising those drill bits by the way!!
Started today, but it's gonna take some time!

+Jon Moller yeah I think it's a good look too
I love the finish. I’ll be using the wax over oil idea. Nice project!

Rag and Bone Brown can you get a bigger house be better then the puny thing the
It's been very good, it's been a while since i've been wanting to make such a mobile for my record player. I loved your project, congratulations!!!
Nice work. Always a pleasure watching your videos.
Nice job brother. Thanks for the oil and wax trick.
Looking good mate. I was quite impressed with how the wax looked!

Plywood looks great 😀
Well done. Great build!
Very nice indeed
Well done Kieth still have my favourite though the dog kennel!
+William Walmsley thanks! Might make another at some point
Great video, Keith! 👍 Fantastic project, looks great as ever!
+Robson Woodwork thanks!
Only just found your channel, really good build and the client has good taste in music (Kate Bush)
That's my record! 👍😂 Thanks
The finish reminded me of the Japanese technique of burning the wood with a flame (forgotten the name of the technique).
That looks awesome
Very nice unit.
+John Grytbakk thanks!
Thumbs up Keith, really enjoy your projects, one of my favourite channels.
Another great build and video
Nice job Keith, as always keeping if real.

I forgot to mention that I thought the idea of having the vinyl facing you is a cracker. Maybe putting the vinyl on draw slides would be an idea?
Nice job and enjoyable vid as always mate. Thanks for sharing.
+Mark McCluney thanks Mark
Good job mate
+Neil Hutson thanks
Nice build!
Great job Keith a lot of work for you, have you used Miller dowels really useful for your sort of application.
Well done!
Very nice!
Very nice
Nice build! You are precice with timing!
looks to me like a job well done,it will last a long time, and the video says it is well made, no come backs there Keith
Beautiful work, as always ^^
Thank you for sharing.🥇🏆

Nobody heard of ITUNES !!
Lovely job all the same.
Spotify is used to listen to an album before I buy it on vinyl. 😁😁
Where can I get one off those maker stamps? Thanks
Could you use a random orbit sander without sandpaper, but cotton cloth to buff?
+Jason Z yes I think so. I have one of those buffing pads that fit in a drill chuck too but I usually just end up doing it by hand
Great build mate. enjoy your videos. How much did you pay for the sheet of ply?
