A weekend with a Yamaha MT03!

  • I borrowed this 2020 MT03 bike off of RidersShare for a few days and put about 100+ miles on it. With 321cc, 375 lbs wet, it's shortest bikes you can get in this cc range. As a short rider that usually commutes in town, I had a great time with this bike on the highway, and on the little bit of country riding I could do with it while van glamping.

Mt03 makes a great first bike for those who are a little nervous and need something super forgiving. If riding comes somewhat naturally to her where she could safely / comfortably handle more power id check out the kawi Z650. It is slightly taller but the front of the seat is super narrow meaning her legs can go straight down rather than out to the sides. Its easily the most approachable middle weight for shorter riders and with roughly 70ish HP which in my opinion is the sweet spot where it's not overwhelming for new riders but still enough to be entertaining even for seasoned riders.

@dustinCE she got a rebel 300 because she generally like the cruiser aesthetic and lower seat. it's a pretty fun bike that even I'll take to work sometimes and wrong it out. only issues are not suitable for long trips or freeways due to (1) lack of power and (2) comfort with small seat, ergos, and rear suspension.
she did get to test an mt03 at MotoGP in Austin. it was weird for her at first due to the totally different riding style and leaning more into turns. but she liked it. since then she's tested a couple of bikes: rebel500, rebel 1100 dct, Vulcan s 650, and even a Live wire. overall the rebel 300 is a solid starter. almost purpose built for short beginners

Great video and great bike! I have become an advocate of smaller bikes after decades of larger bikes. People say that endelessly, and TH-camrs recommend it, but I prefer the opposite. I prefer not screwing the arse off a bike. I like a bike to do what I want, and have the bike do it easy with no stress. Hence the bike will last longer and perform better.
However having said that, this Yam MT03 should have plenty of power and not need wringing anyway.

@@greenbow7888 I mean, I'm about as fast as a Miata on my CBR300R

      @Google_Does_Evil_Now ปีที่แล้ว

@@DonaldMohrMusic I had a blast on a Yamaha Virago 250 on the Spanish mountain roads of Mallorca. And that bike was slower than this one. But It was so light and nimble to check around on tight twisty mountain roads. Have a look on Google Maps for Sa Calobra, amazing roads.
When building experience and practising "advanced" techniques I find lighter bikes to be easier to throw around.
And it's fun wringing the throttle, through the gears, getting the maximum. I've had Fireblade etc where it's rare to get full revs in 1st or 2nd.
I had a 6 speed 50cc 2-stroke with a 10,000-12,000 redline, that needed maximum revs in every gear just to get to 50 mph :-))
      I enjoyed it in London.

For my tests I'm riding the honda 500f and whilst I can ride it (high speeds and low speeds) if I needed to physically walk it from one place to another I'd struggle. I use it for commuting back and forth to work and for pleasure riding, which means sport riding on back roads.
This MT-03 is a fantastic-handling motorcycle. It feels great into, through the middle, and exiting corners, giving a terrific feel.
It feels so good to me that I usually forget all about it being "only" 321cc and simply get down to enjoying handling the bike.

I normally ride a customized Harley that was perfectly built to suit my 5 foot 7 frame even with 2 bad knees but have been looking at the idea of getting the R3 just for a quick around town ride but the look of a sport bike is a deterrent for me because I like to see the frame not plastic and now I know there is an option. Same motor, trans, and all basics just does not look like it belongs in Tron. Even new the cost is attractive so this will get moved to the top of the list of test rides once the cash is there to purchase, thank you for pointing this option out, I will head to a dealership to check it out in the morning to see how well it will fit.

My wife has a 2022 MT-03 & she loves it. I started teaching her to ride about 18 months ago & it has been a great bike for her as she's quite short & had never ridden before. Where we live (Queensland, Australia) you have to do a minimum 3 months on a learner's permit before you can get your RE licence, which restricts you to LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) approved bikes - which is based on power to weight ratio - & the MT-03 is at the upper end (power wise) of those. The MT-03 has been a great bike for her to learn on & now she's keen to step up to a Street Triple (I had one & she rode it a few times & loved it. She's also ridden my Speed Triple 1200 RS, but the seat is a bit high for her). I had to laugh watching your review because you pointed out the same things I find every time I ride it - especially hitting the horn a lot when I'm going for the indicator switch! 🙄

Hi Doodle, one thing I like about smaller displacement bikes, like this gorgeous Yamaha, is that you get to use all the gears most of the time and run the bike hard. I love to squeeze every ounce of power out the engine and make it scream! That's harder to do on bigger bikes for various reasons. I hope you review the Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 one day. The r3 riding position actually got more aggressive than it originally was. After many early r3 riders did the lower clip on mod the current 3r actually comes that way. So the difference in position is more extreme from an mt03 to a new r3 vs an older r3.

Just to start off, I love your videos and content, keep it up! Regarding your comparison of the Yamaha MT03 to the KTM Duke 390, there are quite a lot of differences. I think the MT03 competes more with the older Kawasaki Z300 but perhaps also the Z400. The KTM Duke 390 is in another league, the components are a much higher quality (brakes/suspension), full colour TFT dash, higher "more grown up" seat height and to be honest the 373cc single cylinder is a MUCH punchier engine down low compared to the twins from Kawasaki and Yamaha. Although, at higher speeds the KTM will fall flat a bit. The MT03 is definitely a much more forgiving and easy going bike, perfect beginner naked for sure. Anyways. Just my 2c

For everyone whining about the adjustable mirror comment, my 2014 valkyrie does not have adjustable mirrors. You set the position you want with a wrench, and then it does not move from that place. My 2005 suzuki m50 was the same. I would not call that an adjustable mirror. Nice review Doodle, I do want a shorter bike but not sure I can see myself on a 300cc one, love my Valkyrie's power too much. Maybe you can review it?

My love of KTM’s is tempered by my aversion to the niggling issues with them I only want to ride not fix it. These are a blast

What a beautiful road! Can you get a Rebel 500 for a review? I think it's pretty nice looking and great for the city and mountain roads.

I loved the look of the MT03 (my main reason I was dead set on it, but for my 5'3 frame, the z400 was not only the better buy (500 more and u get 399 cc's) and cheaper out the door, it was just more comfortable to sit on. Its much narrower on the seat and so ur more able to touch the ground. Also it comes with abs and the display was much clearer and nicer lol. I was wondering if u could do a review on it? I'm a new rider and I've only taken it out about twice now so it feels fun and easy to learn on for me. But curious as to what a more seasoned rider like urself might feel about it.

I have the z650 and bought it just for the seat being so narrow. Funny somebody else found that as convenient as I do.

Ha, nice name. I got the mt-03 and I’m happy with it, but I see it as a starter bike that can be used for track days when I get a different bike. Glad you’re happy with your z400, they are pretty sweet!

Love to see sub 500cc quality new bikes. I don't see this as a Lerner bike as they tend to be 50~125cc in the UK due to learner restrictions and insurance cost. I wish UK had free road tax for sub 350cc because they cost more to tax than a large tesla currently with a fraction of the space and materials used.

Yamaha have held that title for a long time . The bike that has had the least amount of repairs while under warranty. Then all you need to do after that is basic matinence to maintain that reliability.
