I just fired my guitar teacher today because I've learned more from you in a few weeks than he taught me in a few months. I'm looking forward to more of your lessons in the future and will be ordering your beginners course and songbook in a few days. Thank you, Justin. You're my new guitar teacher.

Some people might think it's funny and silly when singing the names of the chords in the same vein of the song, but it's actually VERY helpful/beneficial. Awesome job, I've been playing for over 20 years, but I suck as a teacher.

  • @TheOuttabody

Here is the breakthrough you help me with.
The very first beginning is on the 14th fret (with middle finger on G)and 13th fret (with index finger on E).
There is no science there. That’s clear.
But moving to 12th fret, my movement was very awkward and unnatural, thus slow because I was using my index on E (rather than my ring finger). By positioning my ring finger on E, it freed up my index finger for the next move to the 10th fret, which was very easy and natural and effortless.
Then my index finger was free when all I had to do was slide my middle finger to the 9th fret (on G) and very easily and effortlessly placed my index finger on the 8th fret (on E) and so on.
I’m a beginner. The biggest problem is the fast transition of my fingers to hold next chord or to place them on the next notes. And this problem becomes “HUGE” when I watch some “how to play this or that song” on acoustic guitar on youtube because the person doesn’t break it down enough for the best possible placement of fingers on certain notes. Not only that! The person plays fast and I can’t see what fingers goes on what note on the fret. To make the matters worse, he uses the dreaded “BARRE” technique to hold down all G, B, E notes with only index finger, laying down on all 3. Yes, it is faster and easier to “BARRE” like that on the 12th, 10th and the 5th fret rather than using the middle and the ring finger on G and E, ONLY and ONLY if you’re experienced and good enough to pull it off.
Short of a long story, I think the biggest favor you can ever do to beginners like me is exactly "what you do" in this video by pausing and showing specifically each move from one note to the next. Very well done!
In my book, you CANNOT teach a beginner unless you put yourself in his/her position. Having said that, I just "subscribed". Keep up the good work!

Excellent tutorial. First and foremost...this is not for BEGINNERS! Intermediate players and above would benefit most from this tutorial. Advanced players can build off of this and enhance it however they wish. Secondly, Justin has some really good lessons. Marty is also a great instructor, especially for beginners. So understand the two and stop clicking on the thumbs down on this lesson. You gotta be crazy (or you've just picked up a guitar for the first time) if you don't like this.

Justin just from learning from what you teach on how to play the guitar. I was very surprised how good I have gotten, Now one of my biggest regrets in life is not picking up a guitar when I was young. I am 40 now. I grew up in Texas so everybody starts playing football in 4th grade. I played, but was really more into theater and had a talent for it. I had an acting coach when I got signed with an acting agency in my 20s. So I have studied that craft for years. I didn't follow through with my dream. That's a whole other story. But through out school, Expecially in Garland tx. The arts are not really a priority for schools. So no money is put into those programs. The only reason I stayed in acting was because the teachers talked to other teachers and told them I have a raw talent. So thankfully the teachers spent time talking to me and getting me signed up in drama classes they made sure to be a mentor to me. I did several plays, I got payed for two. This was right before I quite auditioning and acting when I got my first paying gigs at two local theaters. Now I'm sure I would have come across a guitar in that world eventually, but I got out of it. I wrote a few plays. My first was in middle school.😂. The school actually put it on for the students. So I was a writer and a poet. There are many things I'm not good at but I am good when I comes to things like that. Well I will get to the point. I picked up a guitar a year ago. I practiced and practiced to your lessons. Well it tuned out I had a knack for the guitar. When I got good enough to almost play any song as long as the chords are told to me. And the strumming pattern. Which now I am able to do myself by listen to the song. Well once my ear learned all the sounds this amazing instrument could make. I started hearing music to my words. Kind of like it was giving a soul to the words. Making them three dimensional in a way. I wish I could personally thank you for doing what you do Justin. You have help enrich my life and helped in giving me something I didn't know I could do and do good. Well needless to say I started with the regrets of not picking of a guitar in my teens and thinking what could have possible happen. Since I was already in an artistic environment. So the other night I went to downtown Dallas on a weekend. It's an arts district and a lot of bars all around. I sit on the concret and took my guitar case out and set it up like a donation box and just started playing the guitar. I played all night as passer bys asked me to play certain songs and some I ws just playing what I made up. People walked by, some stayed and listened. Well by the end of the night I had 150 dollars in my case I was there for 4 hours. I grew up here. So people that knew me saw me and were like WTF are you doing sitting on the concrete and just playing the guitar. I was always usually on the other side. I have a Job. But when I went aand did that and saw how I had impacted certain people just for a moment was a very fulfilling experience. I hadn't had that feeling since I would always be around artist and creating and acting with them. I m sorry that I wrote so much😉. I just wanted to thank you for what you do and how many seeds you plant that spread across this world affecting people for the better and that is rare rightnow. Thumbs up to you my friend for doing something with goid intentions and something that has a positive effect on this reality. That's is rare. I wish would have picked up that piece of me a long time ago. Maybe I could have made a career out if it. I don't like to dwell on the past and "what ifs" I am thanfull that I found the guitar and thankfully for what you put out there. I would have never learned to play the guitar Justin. Thank you so much for. Sincerely David

I learned the intro last night and I can't stop playing it. I've seen other guitar tutorial videos for this one but all of them went way over my head. I'm a beginner, and the way Justin explained the picking pattern here made it very easy for me to comprehend.
This one ain't as hard as it looks. (That's what she said! Darn it!)

Another awesome guitar lesson Justin. At 10.35 when you said pluck the fourth, I think you want pluck the third.
