    In the book James and the Giant Peach, his parents were actually eaten by a “strange carnivorous rhinoceros,” that escaped from a zoo. Certainly they couldn’t show that in the movie, but the foreboding imagery of the rhino does a good job of capturing james’ trauma.

    When thinking about it, MisterDavey is probably one of those supposedly called ghost animators who separated their more professional work and animations for fun into two different halves so as to appear more professional. It's not uncommon considering that it's even in the art world where professional artists were known to have a pen name that's completely separated when making fanart & fan collaboration projects.

    • @tasfiahaque1370
      @tasfiahaque1370 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      A lot of animators/those who work within the field as a whole have admitted to making darker content with the characters/settings they were working on almost as a vent at times (see the Rugrats storyboard jam for instance). Wouldn't surprise me if this was the case here and he used another name to separate himself.

    • @KeyTryer
      @KeyTryer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Honestly I would believe that dude did work for Hasbro or Cartoon Network. Doesn't seem that uncommon and the animations are fairly high quality for one person. A lot of people in the industry do that a lot when they don't want their material to mix with their professional work.

      @MercuryKurogane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I think that makes the whole idea that the swamp is depression even more apparent, as sometimes depression can get so bad you feel like you don't even deserve to be happy and fight off the attempts people make because you don't feel worthy to even be with them.

      tbh, as a kid the Artax scene was obviously upsetting, but as an adult? It now straight up makes me sob like a baby, like even thinking about it now makes me tear up. It hits me so hard now because I lost my best friend to drugs, but it was more than just drugs, it was a long decline I saw in her throughout the entire time I knew her, a slow descent where she had less and less hope and less and less reason to live every day, and addiction took over her life, and no matter what I did to try to save her (I was addicted to at the time, to be clear), it was never enough, she was trapped in her own Swamp of Sadness, and I couldn't stop her from sinking in the end, and even though it doesn't make any sense, I still blame myself sometimes.
      Okay, now I'm just full on crying...

    Swamp of Sadness as a metaphor for depression sounds about right. Besides what's said in this vid, it could also represent the fact that, much like how we all didn't expect Antax to sink in the Swamp, those you don't expect to suffer from this condition actually do. And by the time you've finally realized it, perhaps because the depression has grown so severe that it's more apparent now, it might be too late to save them from it. Yep, horribly sad.

    • @nublulz
      @nublulz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Too true. It’s sometimes the most outwardly “happy” people - people who we’re jealous of for apparently having it better than us - who happen to be the same people who are secretly sinking into a deep depression. Perhaps this happens because the outwardly depressed people get noticed and receive the support (or basic acknowledgement) that they need to stave off suicide [just a hypothesis]. I often wonder what I could’ve done to save my cousin, if I had only known about his depression. He was the last person I would’ve suspected to be suffering from it, since he was always the life of the party.

    Artax being able to speak in the book may add some weight to the misery but it would lose a lot of what made it so horrifying. Now that I've taken the time to think about it, what made that scene hit so hard was not just the horse dies - it's the realization that the horse is a PERSON immediately before the death. We're basically taught to see a line between animals and people with emotions on the people side. It was one of the first times the possibility of animals being people really crossed my mind.

    7:50 LOOK GARY THERE I AM omg thank you so much for using my suggestion. those clips from animal planet are exactly the thing i was talking about oh my god. memories man. especially the kid getting grabbed that's exactly the scene. that thing was recorded on my sister's dish cable box and i cried even thinking about it but i was still fascinated by it. so i didn't change a bit lol. the two things i remember from that that "confirmed" it in my kid brain was the sketch recreation from the boy in the beginning (i think?) and the scientists analyzing a chunk of a mermaid's tail looking at the bone structure and stuff.
    thank you again. it was nice seeing it after so long. the cg looks even worse than how i remembered lol
    and oh my god those mlp animations bring back HUGE memories. i was a little kid downright obsessed with mlp during that time so i was the prime audience to get traumatized by those. one of the hdd animations taught me the "see you in tee" word and my poor mother had to explain why i couldn't say that

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way about the mermaid designs from Mermaids: The Body Found. No one ever talks about how cool and terrifying they look whenever they bring this mockumentary up, only about how it was a hoax. I too want to see this type of design more. I wanted to use this design in my fanfiction rewrite of the Goosebumps book Deep Trouble (these rewrites are based on how I would do a film adaptation of each Goosebumps book, but in a novel form on a fanfiction website), because the first Deep Trouble is about mermaids (and a sea monster but it never impacted the plot nor did anything), and Goosebumps is supposed to be scary and those mermaids were the stereotypical, Little Mermaid-esque ones.

    I don't know if you like manga/anime but Rumiko Takahashi made a story about mermaid's being like that. If you eat their flesh you can become immortal but most of the time you turn into a monster. Mermaids don't always appear (it's mostly about two people who ate the flesh and became immortal, meeting other people similar to them) but when they do appear... yeah.

    Since this film is already 8 years old and now eligible to be mentioned during Traumathon, Transformers Age of Extinction contained a scene which greatly disturbed me when I watched it the first time. It was the scene where Ratchet is discovered while hiding by a human organization and bounty hunter Lockdown tasked with hunting down any surviving Transformers, either Decepticon or Autobot. He tries to escape but is gunned down very badly, to the point where he's hoping on a single leg. He begs the humans his mercy and reminds them that they were once allies. However, they have none of it and when Ratchet refuses to tell of Optimus' whereabouts, Lockdown extracts his spark (heart), killing him. This scene always upset me as 1) Ratchet is my favorite Autobot of the films and 2) it's so sad to see this betrayal and how Transformers are discriminated on Earth despite having so much character (character in which makes me and so many others fans fall in love with) in them. It's always so hard for me to watch that scene whenever that film plays somewhere.
    (Also lol on this vid's url)

    As for the mermaid doc, as a kid I was always freaked out by it, but something in the back of my mind wanted me to not believe they were real. Glad that I listened, because regardless of how scared I was I can rest easy knowing there's one less thing to fear about the ocean. Out of the thousands of things to fear about the ocean.

    I think that the MLP animations scarred a lot of people because of how MLP was a space for very very young children. And the fact that this kind of content(which is funny that bronies of all people were upset about them) was made so easily accessible to little kids. The fact that children could so easily find intense horrifying gore is so gross. While I think the animations are very well made it's still so wild to me how easy little kids could find them

    This video triggered two core memories 😭…
    The MLP gore was practically something I was terrified by, especially the fact a lot of the fandom targeted very uplifting characters (e.g. pinkie pie, rainbow dash) and created HORRIFYINGLY ACCURATE cartoonish gore. At like 9 years old I was so horrified but fascinated by the fact that ponies were able to construct such a horrible.. mess 😭
    Adding on, the discovery documentaries on mermaids CREEPED ME OUT as a kid. It only got worse because my mother SHOWED ME THEM and was FASCINATED while I was afraid of being captured by a mermaid. I literally never viewed mermaids the same for years and then I forgot entirely about the entire thing. Seeing it now feels so uncanny but comforting, and honestly, I hate it but don’t. Seriously good video at the end of the day though!!

    The thing with 'James and the Giant Peach' is that the rhino is not a metaphor, James' parents deadass get eaten by a rhino. I never got why it was a rhino though, it'd make more sense if it was like a lion or some other predator.
    Also I remember watching 'Smile' and being utterly fascinated by the animation and fight coreography, like it was actually one of the many things that made me want to get into animation. And for me as like a 13-14 year old the gore was so comical and exaggerated that it didn't scare me, same for the '.mov' series.
    Oh god the Swamp of Sadness scene, I _hated_ these scene as a kid. I remember strangely understanding the metaphor and deeper meaning back then, like I could grasp the concept but in a childish way. Like I got the idea of "sometimes people are just so sad that you can't help them." and I just... did not vibe with that as an optimistic 7 year old.

    I saw Never Ending Story when I was very little. I didn't get the full picture of the scene in the swamp at the time and assumed Artax was sacrificing himself to save Atreyu from sinking in the swamp. Needless to say it still made me cry, watching a horse die like that.

    Ya know... something that never actually was 'scary', but might be an interesting topic for a Traumathon video--- is the final scene from the 1977 version of 'The Island of Dr. Moreau'. There's actually a little bit of controversy around the final scene, and I have to spoil the ending of the movie, to explain.. so, SPOILERS. But in the end, Michael York's character escapes the island on a lifeboat, with 'Maria'--- he had been given a serum that was turning him into an animal, but in the final scene he wakes up, fully cured & back to normal, and sees a boat approaching and waves it down. There's a brief flash of Maria's face.. and a LOT of people think it's a surprise twist, and it shows that she's changing into an animal, proving she was one of Dr Moreau's animal-people all along. But a bunch of people DON'T think she looks changed, and they think she looks normal, and they don't believe there's any kind of twist that shows her changing. If she is changing, York's character doesn't even notice or react... so, it's a weird argument that hasn't been settled since I was a kid.

    I watched James and the Giant Peach when it was new and remember really enjoying it. However I have no memory whatsoever of s giant sky rhino. Which is really odd considering how terrifying that thing looks to me right the heck now. It's definitely very cool, but I have a phobia of large things in the sky/sea and the way it bursts through that cloud in the dark sky is legitimately freaking me out and making it hard to look at the screen. Hence why I'm down here leaving a comment.

    the reason i love MLP is that even thought its a kid show, it can be really weird and bizarre sometimes and some of these animations show this side of the show, only being way more explicit
    a short that always got me was called "My Little Pony: Friendship was magic", where it showed Twilight falling from a window with glimpses from the episodes and in the end, Luna saves her from hitting the ground and a text appears saying "You're gonna carry that friendship", and all of that accompanied by the Cowboy Bebop song "Greenbird"
    it isn't scary, but it's so sad that i've almost cried when rewatching it (mainly because of the music and from nostalgia)
