    I wasn't expecting you to make this video. I guess you got my suggestion via email I submitted earlier this year when you announced Traumathon 4. And I'm very glad that you did, because this is a element that often gets neglected when it comes to the Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy. And its often the parts that traumatizes me as a child, and still disturbs me to this day. So thank you for this video, and I wonder how many people got scared or traumatized by these movies. Because for awhile, I felt alone with this experience.

      ig I can post it here rq. I remember, as a kid, I was watching tv, and idk what happened but I eventually stumbled upon a show called "Operation Ouch" and it was a show about A&E for children, but like they would just show the full injuries, no censorship. the episode I remember was one about a kid who hurt himself on a bike, but the next segment is the part that's stuck with me: one about a kid who got a nail infection and had to have it removed while he was high on laughing gas. literally traumatic (as in it's stuck with me and nail stuff has become a sore point for me ever since)

    I will say the nightmare that stuck with me was of me playing a Spider-Man game on a console made by V-tech. In the dream, i touched the joystick and then the tv flashed and spider man came on saying “OOOoooo, you touched the spider man!”
    he then started convulsing and the TV started flashing colors, like seizure inducing

    I think I remember hearing that Spider-Man was designed to have a sort of uncanny, subtle horror to him, like how he crawls on walls with such a a strange, contorted pose.
    Would've been great to have those deleted scenes from 3, but unfortunately, sometimes good things are taken from us.

      Yes! Steve Ditko was chosen as the co-creator and original artist because they wanted to make a spooky-flavored series that would squeak under the radar for folks that were up in arms about horror comics. Ditko Spider-Man art has some excellent uncanny vibes.

      @@Whatlander Yet another unsubstantiated myth about early Marvel. Steve Ditko was chosen as the co-creator because he was willing to work for the company. It could've been any other artist. Any uncanniness is coincidental; the old Spider-Man comics were not spooky/horror-themed whatsoever.

    Sam Raimi's horror to me has never been that scary without truly sitting down to think about the implications of what he portrays, from a face value, it just looks pretty silly but when you think about it, its a lot darker. You honestly explained what implications the imagery Raimi portrays perfectly, for example the scene with the skeletons in Spider-Man 1. Absolutely love both Raimi's humor and horror, and he blends those well together.

    • @JC-fk8kc
      @JC-fk8kc ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The Evil Dead series is a great example of "looks silly, is actually really dark." In Raimis works, notably with evil dead 2 and the series, it delves into the darker undertones quite a bit.

  • @kraikein
    @kraikein ปีที่แล้ว +45

    Funny you mention finding the symbiote boring, because Raimi himself wasn't a big fan of Venom, but Sony and Ami Aryad sort of guilt tripped him into putting him in the film. Originally the movie was supposed to have Sandman, the New Goblin and the Vulture. They even had gotten to the making a physical prop of prototype wings. I do wish they kept the symbiote/Venom's idea of degloving Eddie and messing with his DNA/Skeleton, especially since Venom as a character in the comics seems to be based around space horror

    One scene I'm surprised you didn't bring up was the balcony scene from the second. The scene where harry is standing on his balcony when he hears a thud at the bottom of the building. The sound then gets louder and louder as it gets closer to him, only to stop. Harry looks over the balcony, only to get grabbed by doc ock. The buildup was something straight out of a horror movie. One of my favorite details about the Spider-Man 2 hospital scene, and one that I don't see many people talk about even if they've even conscientiously noticed it is that if you go back and watch it, _not a single drop of blood is spilled throughout the entire sequence,_ and it's still as amazing as it is. Raimi is just brilliant.

    Also, completely agree. Raimi handled the Spiderman trilogy how a comic book movie should be handled. Balanced humor and horror, not trying to justify anything but delighting in both, the way comic books often do, as opposed to constantly sending nods and winks to the camera like "Yeah, we know this is stupid haha but we're the quirky ones," and therefore ruining the dark and serious moments - or alternatively, getting so into its dark side that any attempt at humor just sounds painful, like a comedian with a shattered femur.

Not to mention Steve Ditko was a big name in horror after Spider-Man and it shows. The scene where Peter confronts Uncle Ben's killer is horrifying, especially in the new recolors, him hanging from a wall upside down, threatening to throw him off the building, the fucking pupils his mask had for whatever reason, chilling.

    I was very little when the first film came out. I remember the series being such a cultural influence in every aspect, to the point that seeing clips of the movie makes me nostalgic. Thing is, I never watched the movies past the first couple of minutes of the first film. Why? The scene of Peter getting his powers and the closeup of his finger freaked me out. I vividly remember being at a family friend’s house when I was like 6, one of the kids putting on the film which I was eager to see, then immediately leaving once I saw the finger hooks. Yeah, I’ve never done well with stuff embedded or protruding from the skin, and seeing the clip in here even made my body react. I’m not very squeamish to begin with, but things like that just immediately get to me.
    I’m a big fan of campy, cheesy, and batshit crazy movies that try a lot of different things and aren’t afraid to be weird. What I find not enough people mentioning when talking about the hijacking is the actual character of Max Headroom. Not from the intrusion, I mean, from the veejay program he originally came from. As a “CGI” robot who’s meant to satirize late-night personalities, Max can be pretty unsettling on his own. Spider-Man and horror have gone hand-in-hand from day one. It's why Steve Ditko was the co-creator and not Jack Kirby. Horror comics were under a lot of moral panic scrutiny and suppression, but a kid-friendly superhero that just happens to be drawn by a horror artist who gives him some nice, uncanny poses? No problem! (Or at least acceptable!) It's not like it's an overt horror series, but the desire to make something at least a little dark and unnerving is present in the original work. Raimi was the natural choice for the first of many Spider-Man cinematic reboots.

  • @guyofminimalimportance7

    Rami's use of horror motifs in this series really highlights what modern superhero movies are missing; a sense of stakes or immersion.
    Most modern MCU projects have the same inconsequential tone where nothing feels like it matters. People are always either in danger or dying yet no one takes it seriously. Theres no thrill or engagement to the drama because no one is ever scared of anything.
    Even though Spiderman wasn't a horror movie the scenes showing genuine fear or violence humanized the cast and made the danger feel more tangible, and in doing so made the actual significance of the drama much more engaging.

    Mysterio was always a character I wished they went more into the psychological horror aspect of. His first ever appearance in anything is him fucking with peter's mind so badly that he has to go see a therapist and it sucks we never really got to see that side of him much again until the nick fury fakeout scene in ffh

    It's probably to late for this years traumathon, but here's a really specific one for me.
    If anyone ever played Kirby Superstar on the snes, There was one boss in the great cave offensive. It was the whale boss, but ever since I first played that game as a kid, This boss has terrified me. You walk out onto an impossibly thin wooden walkway in a dark cave filled with water. The whale shows up and admittedly looks kind of cute, but something about the way its animated gives be tremolandos anxiety. The whale breaches and sends kirby flying into the sky with tons of water.
    I'm not sure if anyone else has this particular one. But I've been anxious around water for as long as I can remember.

    Man, the symbiote literally physically eating away at someone is an awesome concept, shame that didn't make it in. Not only are you psychologically dependant on it, but eventually you're a raw boney husk of who you used to be and can't even go out into society without the symbiote to cover your deformities.

    Spider man 3 was actually my favorite when I was little although it was really because in my opinion it had the coolest villains (I just really love sandman). Looking back it was definitely not as good in it's entirety but I do really love how it handled Venom. It's nostalgic to me and therefore it always holds a special place in my heart.

    OMG YES I've had Spidey on the brain lately and the first film of Raimi's trilogy scared the hell out of me as a kid. Specifically the part where Goblin tricks Spider-Man into that fire or wtv. Can't agree with you on it more lol.

    3:14 nowadays thid scene is always looked at as silly but as a kid for some I would see why it’s “scary” especially in a realistic standpoint. A grenade so powerful that just vaporizes people to the bone instantly is pretty horrific idea looking back 😭

    Spider-Man 3 is a masterpiece whose only flaw is that they tried to cram too many stories into one film for any of it to make sense or be fully explored and also a lot of parts were bad. But fuck, is it ever fun to watch. Peter Parker literally morphs into an emo kid - he doesn't get a haircut his bangs _just do that_ - and they even use "Vindicated" for the credits. It was beautiful.

    9:56 goose, you've ever heard of apocalypse now redux?
    13:33 turner classic movies will create a composite rendering of lost movies with what production stills and audio from the movie they have! they've done that for like the original phantom of the opera, the judy garland version of a star is born, and probably a lot of other movies. so, it wouldn't be bizarre to see just a skeleton of what raimi's vision of spiderman 3 would've been if they took the turner classic movies route

    To be honest, Spider-Man from his inception has always had some roots in horror, from the body horror of a teenage boy being irreversibly mutated with strange new abilities, the main artist behind his inception (Steve Ditko) was incredibly gifted when it came to horror artwork, and the fact that he's based on a spider, which was initially why he didn't get picked up for a book, at least until the success of AF#15, which Amazing Fantasy was originally known as Amazing Adult Fantasy which focused on darker stories. Horror was, and still is very close to Spider-Man, no matter how family friendly Marvel/Disney try to paint him as. His villains are all tragic in some way, whether it be mentally, physically or in their backstories, his body has morphed him into a full on were-spider before, and some of the concepts his stories, be they from comics, movies, shows or games, have scared the shit out of the many people who saw them. One of the biggest examples of this is at the end of the PS1 Spider-Man game, with the Carnage symbiote merging with Doc Ock and creating Monster Ock, which chases you down in an exploding base with anguished yells and cries trailing right behind you. I'm happy we at least got a trilogy with a director who understood that with the light of becoming a superhero and saving the day comes the darkness of losing loved ones or struggling with your self-worth. I can't thank Raimi enough for showing both sides of the coin of the wall-crawler we don't see much of nowadays, and I'm hoping we'll get to see some of those more darker themes explored now that the MCU has decided to kick Spidey down so much in NWH.

    so weirdly enough spiderman 3 was the first spiderman movie I saw. I don't remember how that happened, but it did. and I LOVED it. Still do now, despite all of its flaws. Similar to the doc oct awakening scene, the scene where eddie gets grabbed by venom in the church ALSO uses wires to suspend him... but this time they were in his mouth. So if he looks like he's in pain during that scene, thats cause he is. the man has goddamn WIRES in his MOUTH.
