100%. God, I remember combing through each of those DVD biographies of each ghost wondering why that wasn't what the entire movie was about. I watched it around the same age, & had the same terror at what's not otherwise a scary movie. Such a GREAT concept. I'd still watch the hell out of a backstory movie, or a remake. That lawyer kill scene messed me up through my childhood too!
I watched some of this movie a few days ago. It made me laugh a lot because the little boy was obsessed with death. I know it could also be a way of trying to deal with his mother's death. I didn't watch all of it due to the flashing lights and effects of the ghosts were hurting my eyes.
This is my favorite movie of all time, but I agree it's not a misunderstood masterpiece. It's just fun and goofy. I love all of the ghosts so much, I wish there was a spinoff miniseries or something about them.
There’s this movie that kinda traumatized me that I didn’t want to touch or wanted to see this material for like a week and well that movie is House of Wax made me not wanting to touch or seeing candles and wax material
Born in 1990 and remember this and legit one of the first horror movies to scare me. (Well kinda I remember at 7 thinking about horror movies in general "this can't be real the camera man would die too") but just deff was creepy

I think seeing that lawyer getting slice in half gave me a fear of those types of deaths, like that horse in that one J Lo movie or in Hannibal where they found one of their own, slice and display like a museum piece. Honorable mentions, the laser hallway from resident Evil, and the intro of Ghost Ship.
when i saw this movie first time (the new one) i was more intrigued/interested then spooked. this disigns and concepts are soo cool. dude dig ars maze house full out of glass changes and moves! and not just one or two ghosts but 13!

Speaking of railroad spikes being put through someone's skull - there was a real medical case like this, where the patient survived. You can look up Phineas Gage on Wikipedia (but be mindful as the images may be a little much for some people who are freaked out by this sort of thing).
I reccomend watching the backstory videos on the ghosts (I thought I saw them uploaded to DailyMotion a while back). They are far more interesting than what is shown in the movie, and the lore that's teased by Miss Honey when she exposition dumps the Black Zodiac stuff is just wasted. I too would want this to be a 13 episode miniseries rather than an whole movie, with the finale tying in the family, and Cyrus wanting to use the ghosts for his own means. That all said, this movie is SUCH a guilty pleasure on its own. I was haunted by it as a kid, and get all nostalgic for it as an adult. Just stan Matthew Lillard and watch the backstory vids if you can find them
The movie that absolutely traumatized me was called Street Trash. I remember coming out of my room when i was still a kid, to see my dad watching it on tv. The melting in the toilet scene scared the absolute shit out of me, and still does. To this day, I rEFUSE to watch that damn movie.
I was about 5 or 6 when I saw this movie. The only thing I remember was the sliding glass door scene with the lawyer and holy shit that traumatized me. Seeing his eyes move after he was cut in half and imagining the pain you'd feel if you got cut in half and were still alive. God.
Oddly enough I had been talking about this movie today and I come home to find out you made a video on! I enjoy this film! It may be kind of lame to most these days, however i did find the ghosts grotesque and terrifying and enjoyed being scared by it as a kid. I’m actually hunting for the dvd of the original to have a cheesy movie night for halloween
We actually watched the remake of the Thirteenth Ghost this October! I also wished it elaborated further on each ghost origin though, especially with The Great Child and The Dire Mother.
I only saw this movie for the first time this year and honestly I think its great! It's typical 90s/early00s with its soundtrack and feel in general. Can't really go wrong with that haha. You're completely right about the effects though, they went totally overboard to the point it felt like they were maybe just filling time to make it a movie rather than actually giving it content about the ghosts.
I hyperfixated on this film for a bit when I was young… I went all through the lore in the “special features” (really showing my age here) and was sooo into it. Like a morbid curiosity in a way since I did find it kinda scary as a kid. I also found the “The Angry Princess” hot in a weird way.. probably because it was one of the first scenes of nudity I saw in a movie as a kid lol
Your mask movie Reminds me of "Silent Night Deadly Night", I never saw that, but as a kid we had VHS tapes from TV and some had ads on there for it and I was so scared
Its obvious this film was treated as a weird Tech Demo. There was so many Panning shots and close ups of the monsters, that if it werent for the extras it would had been like a video Haunted House with no substance.
Matthew Lillard is the shining star in any movie/show he's in and he totally deserves more credit than he gets. I saw him at a horror convention recently and he was super humble and kind.
I don't remember actually being scared by this as a kid, which is weird because I cried from everything at that age I actually saw it because I asked my aunt what it was, so she put it on while watching me that day
This movie terrified me as as kid! Holy crap! I think a series on the ghosts would be a great idea! Or do like a sequel series where maybe Dennis is the sort of guardian ghost to a young medium as they try to research the so called Black Zodiac, that sorta thing
I remember this film! I was waiting for you to show the glass scene, that really scared me as kid....its shame it wasn't make into something more traumatic. It had so much potential 😕
My brother let me watch 13 ghosts when I was literally 6 and it ignited my love of horror for my whole life lmao! The special features on the DVD were always my favorite part, getting to learn the back story of all the ghosts was the coolest thing to wee 6 year old me.
I will admit though that Matthew Lillard was the best actor in the movie. The fact that his character was in such constant torment of his own abilities made it so his quote unquote "overreactions" were quite damn needed. It's difficult to explain how empathic people can be. Some deal with the emotional side of things (which is what I used to deal with horribly), and some could be like this. His character dying at the end of the film was his only release from the pain. It's tragic but it brought me peace to know he was okay in the end.
hell yea! i loved thir13en ghosts as a kid and i love it now for the set design and the lore. wish that the ghost's backstories had gotten more coverage in the movie rather than just being extras.
I almost despise the late 90's/early 2000's horror with the scares being either flashing special effects or grunge rock bloodbath. It's like anti-nostalgia for me.
Oh shit. You made me remember that movie. Just that tho, "remember". I don't remember shit. Just the visuals and some scenes. What I did remember tho is that I liked it a LOT. The 13 ghosts idea with their different personalities and ways to kill you and all of that was so intriguing to me. I also remember being quite dissatisfied with the movie. Because I didn't care for the characters or the lore or whatever. I just wanted to see each ghost kill somebody at least once each. It's just a super fun idea with greatly done visuals.
this is so fun for me to watch because as a kid my dad had a collection of his four favorite horror movies on dvd that he kept on top of our fridge. he would tell us about each of the movies and this one was one of them. he reallyyyy hyped them up, especially this movie. once i was finally old enough to want to watch the movie i was really disappointed because it’s super lame

I actually remember Tony Schalub from a show called Wings about a little family owned air strip. I cant remember what his role was.
I feel like those of us that got spooked as kids watching this inspired the creation of the SCP Foundation
This is literally one of my favorite movies 🥲
Its obvious this film was treated as a weird Tech Demo. There was so many Panning shots and close ups of the monsters, that if it werent for the extras it would had been like a video Haunted House with no substance.
Despite how cheesy and rushed this movie is, I still love it. Each of the ghosts are unique, and I wish this film was developed more.
Matthew Lillard is the shining star in any movie/show he's in and he totally deserves more credit than he gets. I saw him at a horror convention recently and he was super humble and kind.
13 ghost scared me as a kid too, but for nostalgic purposes, I still like it a little.
Holy moly that was a wild ride from the the past. This movie still freaks me out to this day wtf 😆
I don't remember actually being scared by this as a kid, which is weird because I cried from everything at that age
I actually saw it because I asked my aunt what it was, so she put it on while watching me that day
The costumes were some of the best of ever seen.
Matthew Lillard is a legend though
Facts
I never found 13 Ghost scary but I loved the Lore! and the design of the Jackal and the Torso , that's nightmare fuel
Man, these monsters need to be revived for a video game. So much great potential that died at the concept art phase.
I have the DVD on my shelf. I gotta watch the bonus lore material one day.
Tony Schalhoub was also in an episode of the x-files called soft light. Might not be a super scary episode but it fits the season.
the netflix rec is such a good idea goose
Dude this movie scared me so much as a kid I wouldn’t even look at the dvd cover.
Honestly the best thing about this movie is the really out of place end credits song, it kinda fucking slaps
hell yea! i loved thir13en ghosts as a kid and i love it now for the set design and the lore. wish that the ghost's backstories had gotten more coverage in the movie rather than just being extras.
The special features in the DVD where they talk about each ghost was creepier and far more entertaining than the whole movie 💀
i would love to see a full review of this movie
I'd love to see a full version.

We were so robbed of the lore and stuff being the main focus.
this is so fun for me to watch because as a kid my dad had a collection of his four favorite horror movies on dvd that he kept on top of our fridge. he would tell us about each of the movies and this one was one of them. he reallyyyy hyped them up, especially this movie. once i was finally old enough to want to watch the movie i was really disappointed because it’s super lame
