    There’s a zero-cost way of comparing A v B aero performance called the “Chung method”, which you can google, instead of guessing. New *frame* is more aero, but old complete bike is more aero because well hidden rim brakes beat disc brakes (on aero performance).
    Also, as others have pointed out the old Speedmax has tiny holes in the aero spacers that you’re supposed to route the Di2 cables through. There is no pinching of the Di2 cables if you set the bike up the way it is designed. 🤪
    Would be good if Taren started the video by saying “my sponsor Canyon is stuck with a lot of old stock, so I’m going to find all the reasons why you should do them a favour” 😂

  • @mlegrand

    Obviously it’s super tricky to compare these two bikes in this style. Wind speed can change, Taren’s positioning looks different (as he talks about), traffic conditions or something simple like taking a slightly different path can all adjust time.
    I think his point of them both still being good bikes is valid and I like the other bike detail comparisons. Great video Taren! 👍

    On the brake topic: as you mention, most of the time in a triathlon, you are not breaking, so it should be a non-issue. However, as you also mention, most of the time we are riding outside training on open roads, not competing on a close circuit. That extra braking performance may be the difference between avoiding a sudden obstacle or not.

    I’ve been leaning toward canyon for my TT, and have contemplated this decision. The older rim brake models listed are $8599 for the 9.0 (zipp dura ace config) and $5500 (DT Swiss ultegra Di2). At the end of the day I decided on the $8000 CF SLX disc when it releases later this year because of geometry, they’ve fixed a few big fitment issues, it has rim brakes, and most importantly it looks faster with its integrated hydration, and we all know the faster it looks the faster you finish. FWIW I’m also considering Felt IA. Kinda crazy that the price to play for disc brake, electronic group set and decent wheel is $7-8000

    A big reason for not saving watts is it was a mid range new speed max vs a high end old speed max. Also i guess their testing in windtunnel is in aero position not in sitting up right. Still, i love ur videos and i really like the content!

    You can (and should) actually route the cable through the tiny holes underneath the arm pads and down the walls of the spacers so it doesn’t get pinched by the water bottle on the old speedmax. It’s a great design and well thought out by the canyon engineers.

    Good review tbf. I own the 2019 Speedmax CF SLX that was in the video. It’s true that I’ve had to customise the front end to suit me and get more aero and comfortable. One thing I will say about Canyon though, is that their after sales customer service is excellent. I’ve been sent two additional sets of aero bars, various spacers, angled spacers, hydration system parts etc free of charge. Really excellent service.

    If you ever race a technical course in bad weather you'll want those disks! IMUK a couple of weeks ago was in a monsoon and disk brakes were the only reason I didnt bin it on the descent off sheep house.

  • @EspenSkaufel
    @EspenSkaufel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    On the topic of breaks, I'm afraid I have to disagree. It is true that a caliper bike probably is faster in good weather and flat surfaces. However, if you race in rainy weather, you would be surprised to experience how bad brakes can be while legal. In warm and hilly conditions, you can experience overheating (partly dependent on your weight).
    A disc bike will perform well in all conditions and make you feel more confident. Disc breaks are not about performance as an amateur but enjoyment.

    You have your Di2 cables routed incorrectly and that is why there is risk in pinching. The cables are supposed to go through the top spacer. There is a small slit for them to go through and then they stay recessed in the channels of the spacers.

    You can’t compare the Speedmax cf slx to the Speedmax cf. it would have to be the Speedmax cf slx vs cfr, and Speedmax cf vs Speedmax cf 2021. The older Speedmax slx is probably still faster than the new cf cause the cf isn’t the top model. They also haven’t changed the cockpit on the Speedmax cf from 2 years ago it’s just more adjustable because it’s not as aggressive as the higher end slx model. The Newer model is only more expensive than the slx model because it comes with ETap and zipp wheels while the slx comes with ultegra and dt Swiss wheels

    I own the exact same new canyon. My 2 cents is that it’s a slow bike at low speeds. The bike wants to go fast! Basically once you get it up to speed over 20 mph the bike just takes off. Not scientific but just how it feels riding it.

      Pretty short sighted opinion. TT bikes don't have to be uncomfortable and if people are investing in tri for the long haul, it is absolutely not the wrong direction. Taren constantly recommends clip ons to new people, but when someone graduates out of dabbling in triathlon, the TT model is the better option. Not just for aerodynamics but for practically of shifting, feeding, and position for power execution. Here you are again talking shit...
