  • Today we are trying Sunday roast at Toby Carvery for the first time. We weren't sure what to expect going to Toby Carvery, but overall we thought it was a pretty good meal for the price. For those of you who don't know much about it (like us before we went), Toby Carvery is a British chain of carvery-style restaurants, serving roast meats and traditional Sunday roast dinner accompaniments such as Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, gravy, and vegetables. At Toby Carvery, you can choose from four roasted meats and as many vegetables and accompaniments as you want from the buffet-style counters. Toby Carvery has built its brand around offering a "home of the roast" experience, aiming to serve traditional British roast dinners at affordable prices.
What are your thoughts on Toby Carvery? Worth the price of better to have a traditional Sunday roast somewhere else?

You hit the nail on the head, Toby will never beat a home made roast or even a good pub roast, but when you take into account the price, the amount of food you can get, the fact there's almost every possible side for you to pick and choose and how much easier it is than making one yourself, that's when Toby really shines.

Sunday roast every week. Bubble and squeak with a slice of meat on monday. Left overs with mash Tuesday. Meat stewed up with veg Wednesday. Soup Thursday. Fish and chips Friday. Maybe sausage and mash Saturday.
Edit. This was the routine in the 1950's, not everyone could afford to waste food. My nan grew her own veg so the food budget was carefully managed. No freezer or refrigerator and tinned goods were a luxury.
The Sunday roast was the main meal of the week with a big piece of Yorkshire pudding so that you didn't eat too much meat. We would have the rest of the pudding the next day, cold with marmalade on.

Toby is not the high end food some might like, but when you consider some families are on a budget and they can feed their family well for the price then Toby delivers well. If you are somewhere you don't know well and need food, well you know what to expect and that can also be helpful sometimes. Good to see our friends from the USA doing Sunday roasts and learning that goose fat is the better option to roast potatoes. Safe travels and enjoy the wider UK

We were pretty poor, so it wasn't an affluence thing...the left-overs would be used for a few days after (curry, bubble&squeek). The roast looked great for the price - here on the south coast you pay ~£20 for a take-away roast.

Sunday roast in uk is roast meat, roast potatoes, boiled vegetables, stuffing, Yorkshire puddings. What sets it apart from Christmas dinner is at Christmas we also have pigs in blankets & sprouts (if you like them-I don’t).

Just cooking a roast beef meal with yorkshire pudding and veg for me and hubby after a 3 week bout of covid. I really craved a roast! Also bonus, have cooked enough roasties and cabbage for bubble and squeak with cold beef for tomorrow. Cant be beaten 🙂

That all sounds amazing aside from the being sick part. Glad you're feeling better.

Roast dinners are definitely a once a week dish in our household! Not necessarily a Sunday, and sometimes I will cheat and use chicken parcels from the local butchers (faster to cook) but we do love a good roast!

As an Aussie I grew up having a Sunday Roast every week. It would be 1 type of meat- chicken, pork, beef or lamb. Roast potato, roast sweet potato, roast parsnips and roast pumpkin. Steamed carrot and peas and gravy. Yum yum. I do a roast maybe once a month. And a roast for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas Day (even though it’s summer) and Easter Sunday.

Top tip at toby: once you've loaded the late for the 5th time and feel you cant eat anymore fill the plate again and then ask for a box to go 😅💪😉also stick the Yorkshire on the bottom and fill it with veg and gravy 😇

We call our Christmas dinner a larger version of a Sunday lunch. We add more vegetables to a Christmas dinner , so we then continue eating the leftovers for next few days !!

Another great video! Interesting that you picked up on the mustard in the cheese sauce. When I make it, I always add in a good teaspoon of Dijon mustard (French, but all good haha), I think it adds a lot to the sauce. And many Brits would now call it mac'n'cheese. I am also a sucker for the condiments too, cranberry with the turkey, apple sauce with the pork and gammon, horseradish with the beef, and you can take as much as you like! Keep up the excellent work! 😊

@@jacqueline8559 yep mint sauce is easily the most delicious sauce in the world, by a long long way. I always have loads of mint sauce with my roasts, regardless of what meat I've got, because it goes just as well with chicken, turkey, pork, beef, duck etc as it does with lamb. I often mix mint sauce into the gravy too, just to make it be able to cover everything on the plate more easily, cos I pour gravy on everything and not just onto the meat.
I do love cranberry sauce too, and that's always lovely with any kind of meat too, not just turkey. But yeah if I have to choose one sauce over all others, I'm choosing mint sauce every single time. It's just absolutely gorgeous. And goes well with everything.
Whenever I make mushy peas I always stir in a big dollop of mint sauce too, can't have mushy peas without mint.
I've even used mint sauce on fish and chips (or battered sausage and chips) from a chip shop. It goes very well with that, because chip shop chips are basically like roast potatoes anyway (or close enough to them, anyway) and mint sauce goes well with any kind of meat, or even fish, but yeah especially if you get something from there like a battered sausage, or a saveloy, then the mint sauce is absolutely gorgeous with those.

I have so much love for our family (which you are) across the pond. They embrace us as family, and we do the same. Sending love from Warwickshire (pronounced Wo-rick-sheer for our American brothers and sisters).

People get a bit sniffy about a Toby carvery but it's actually pretty good , pity you missed out on the starter and desert course ( the black forest Gateaux is good ) and by the way , you need more gravy on your dinner !

As someone else said on here it’s not your first choice but it is good value and a decent cut of meat. I’ve had worse from pubs with reheated mains and very thin cuts of beef. My mum loves it!
