The mix vegetable curry you had was to accompany the biryani. My favourite order is Lamb Pathia , Saag bhaji with half chips and half fried rice, my partner has the Garlic chilli chicken.
Have you tried a Balti yet? Invented in Birmingham.
If you wanted to make these dishes at home, there's a guy on TH-cam called Al's Kitchen who does British Indian Takeaway Recipes.

Coriander is the devils herb, it’s fascinating the genetics behind why we either taste it as sweet or sour (like soap) I taste soap- very strong, those that taste soap usually don’t like the taste of celery

Chicken korma is a really popular mild curry but I've found that the sauce can vary depending on where it's bought and sometimes it's too sweet. I usually go for meat samosas with the mint dip followed by chicken biryani with saag aloo. My Indian takeaway also gives me free poppadoms and a little bag of salad.

The story I heard about the Tandoori chicken masala was, yes it was invented in Scotland, but it was because someone thought it was dry and wanted a gravy with it.
Buy it could well have been what you heard, or a mix of the two tales.
And you seemed to be eating the poppadoms / sauces correctly.
I think also a lot of British curry houses are based on Bangladesh type food, or maybe that's mostly Bangladesh chefs - not sure. I may have that badly wrong and might be some parts of the country only. But dishes will have been very much Anglicised from original dishes and then become the norm.
As good as the standard curry houses are, it's nice when you get variations from the norm, eg. South Indian, Sri Lankan, Nepalese, etc curry houses, and it would be great to see much more variety based on authentic dishes from all around the Indian subcontinent.
Weirdest naan I've had was up in Scotland (Dundee area) - a banana naan. I've not seen it anywhere else in the UK. Sounds odd but it was actually nice.

The customer wanting a gravy to accompany the chicken tikka was the version I heard, from Stephen Fry on QI, so I'm assuming it's true! It was yoghurt and cream added to the spice mix.

If you have a problem with ANY type of food with chilli DON'T expect water (beer, juice, etc) to cool your mouth down . The only thing that helps is something MILK -based.
The only helpful DRINK to really have is lassi, which is a drinkable yoghurt/yoghurt & milk drink. My faourite is MANGO lassi, but you can also have plain. This will help cool your taste buds and line the tender skin of the gut.
Another option is to EAT plain set yoghurt (or, for preference yoghurt with added mint sauce) with your curries. That way, two people can easily eat from the same dish,, even if they prefer differing levels of spice. Also handy to have a BIG pot of plain set yoghurt about if your local curry house is a bit heavy with the spices for a non-Asian palate, but like me you don't want to be limited to creamy Kormas!
Again, ANY food that is heavy with chilli will tend to taste much spicier to people who don't partake on a daily basis, since chillli actually DAMAGES taste buds if eaten regularly enough. This is also why those who eat chilli-bssed foods will generally find more Northern European foods boringly bland - their taste buds have been KILLED!

Hi guys, all the dishes are invented in the UK 🇬🇧 by restaurant chefs, some dishes exist before restaurants like chicken curry, biriyani, lamb curry, but the restaurants made a different version to the authentic biriyani. For example look up the recipe, you will find a sour sauce with mint meat and rice in layers, not what they serve up to customers. The chicken tikka story number 1 dish in the UK doesn't exist before a customer complaint that the curry does not have enough gravy and they didnt like dry dishes so it's created for the preference of the palettes here. Dansak the sweet curry with chicken lentils 100 percent made up but its so good.

Fun fact, Chicken Tikka Massala was invented in Glasgow, theoretically because the original Indian version was too spicy. However, Faal was invented in Birmingham because people didn't think the curry was hot enough, lol. Typical schizo British tastebuds. Just so you know, Faal is the hottest curry in the world (I think, it's certainly marketed that way!). Vindaloo is usually the hottest curry dish actually on the menu but Faal is often a secret item at many curry houses. Bangladeshi curry houses will often have the best Faal and that is where you are most likely to find it actually on a menu, but if you don't see it just ask and many good places will have it if you want to try it. A good faal can be pretty deadly though, so I recommend keeping the raita on standby!

very good for sandwiches, if its over cooked and too dark i dont eat mushrooms like that...
the only issue is EVERY indian and chinese take away are all different from one or the other in cooking skills, like my local chinese is far better than the one down in the next village, to find a good chinese or idnian take away you have to shop around a bit... the indian take away near me do a long grain rice with black beans, sliced red onion, pea's, sweet corn and mushrooms...

Most food sold by Asian restaurants in the UK is purely invented for the UK restaurant trade. Maybe less so today, but most Asian restaurants were owned/run by Bangladeshis.
India is a vast place and the food varies enormously across the country, to get an idea of that you'd have to eat in some small restaurants that cater for large local Asian populations -places like Leicester, parts of Birmigham or Manchester.
What any particular name is, varies from town to town, restaurant to restaurant - for instance, jalfrezi, to me, is an extremely hot dish, often with whole chillies in it. Go back long enough and lots of names did not exist - tinderloo, jalfrezi, even phall are reasonably recent - the last 30 years, they just got hotter and hotter because people thought it was clever. Before them there was madras - pretty hot, and then vindaloo - very hot, and that was it.

Looks delicious. In the UK we love spicy food, I would say more than anyone else in Europe, and I've lived in Spain, Germany and Russia. Our own food does leave something to be desired... but we've opened ourselves up to world cuisine much more than most/all other European countries. I live in Madrid but I'm from London, and with the exception of Latin American food, all non native food in London is better and more varied than here.

Hey if your Vindaloo was spicy you picked the right restaurant.
Also, please please avoid 'chicken' biryanis. They never will be 'as good' because chicken cooks fast and it'll almost always be overcooked [ and more so because to suit westerners, these restaurants try to make them 'boneless' and that's usually chicken breast ].
Always order 'Mutton' ( Chevon, not lamb ) Biryani. Those are the Grade-A stuff. If you can't get Chevon, then only go with Mutton ( Lamb ). Also, if you want a really authentic 'Aromatic' Biryani... order a Lucknow or Kolkata style biryani. These are cooked with the whole spices packed in cheese cloths and discarded afterwards - so no whole spice comes into your bites. And being 'Kachhi Style' ( where the cooking is started with a bottom layer of Raw Meat marinated for 24 hours... and finished in a 'Dum-Pukht' method), these are way juicier and therefore tastier.

Madras, as in, you know, India.
What is the hottest curry in the UK?
As a little bit of an explainer for all who don't know what a phaal is; it's a curry which originated in the Bangladeshi-owned curry-houses of Birmingham, and is known as 'one of the hottest forms of curry regularly available'.
What is the hottest supermarket curry?
Morrisons have launched an eight-chilli rated curry that is “the hottest supermarket curry ever”. The Flaming Fiery Phaal was developed following complaints from customers that their six-chilli Volcanic Vindaloo wasn't hot enough.

My local "Indian" restaurant/takeaway is Indian and Bangladeshi run. Bangladesh was once East Pakistan, obviously part of Pakistan. but became an independent country in 1972 after a bloody civil war. Here ends the history lesson. The point is that Bangladesh is a Muslim country, so pork will NEVER appear on the menu, but they do seem very keen on fish (but never shellfish), and India is a Hindu country so beef will NEVER appear on the menu. Apart from that though, "Indian" food is gorgeous, possibly only outclassed by Thai food. Thais are predominately Buddhists, but seem to be prepared to tuck into anything!

I find there's too much heavy sauce in British Indian dishes. The flavors can be similar in India but there's either much less sauce or the sauce is much less pronounced (at least the stuff I tried at restaurants in Panji). Personally, you can't beat Chicken tikka without the masala sauce, served with salad, rice and a side of aloo gobi. Either that or half a Tandoori chicken.

The best drink to alleviate the extra hot spiciness, is not a water based drink such as beer, but a yoghurt drink called Lassi. Chilli oil actually dissolves in the Lassi and is washed away, with beer etc the oil does not dissolve, it just floats and spread around in the mouth and can make it seem hotter My Indian and Pakistani friends always have a glass of Lassi at hand on the table, the beer is for afterwards. I can't believe that no one seemed to suggest beef Jalfrezi or Rogan Josh, they are delicious, I like plain chicken Tikka, Masala is simply a creamy tomato sauce which to me takes away the real taste of India - and they say food in England is bland!🥵🥵🥵

Indian takeaways/restaurants always seem great, whereas Chinese takeaway food seems a lot more "processed", but Indian food, always seem to be, well... Fresh and natural.
Anyway, I love poppadoms and pickles, if it didnt come across as weird, but I'd happily scran poppadoms and pickles for starter, main and dessert! :D hehehe
My typical setup is 2 poppadoms and any pickles (Though I say 2, I'm the poppadom hoover, if there's any left on the table, and the waiter tries to take them... Hell on,lol), erm, onion bhajis to start, for main a chicken pathia (Pronounced 'pat-hear'), onion pillau rice and finally, a good old garlic nan bread!!! \o/
    Top nom noms hey! :)

Your 'extra rice' is part of the chicken Biriyani - it comes in 2 containers- the mixed vegetables (with the cabbage and possibly chick peas) is the sauce to pour over that rice. That's why it is dry.
Well done for trusting our suggestions!

We also ask for the mild veg curry accompanying the biryani to be madras hot, which makes the dish 👌

    • @duncanevanmacleod123

Just no, if the rice and the dish are cooked separately, it's not a biryani. If it comes separate, you're being ripped off.

If something's too hot, you had the antidote right there… That 'yoghourt' dip is raita, which takes the fire away after a bite of something too hot (either drizzled on the curry, or as a spoonful after the hot food, to kill the burn). The way Indians deal with it is a yoghourt based drink called 'lassi'… either salty or sweet… or occasionally flavoured with mangoes… to wash down the curry. Often served in pint glasses in restaurants.
