Halloween in New Zealand was almost non-existent until the last 20 years with the rise of social media, now the young folks embrace it, but it's not an official holiday or anything (I'm 45!) Most households still don't celebrate or have any treats to administer to trick or treaters. But spring is slowly making it's way through the rain and artic blasts! Also daylight savings starts this weekend so it's also lighter for longer, so not so spooky.
I live in Australia & until recently Halloween wasn't much of a thing here. I grew up in the States & moving here I *REALLY* missed Halloween when I first came to Australia. However Halloween in Australia is starting to take off & it's wonderful! It's a bit like Halloween is in Florida. The weather is warm & so Halloween here has almost an early Summerween vibe to it. I'm hoping to have a. Summerween Halloween party on Halloween this year.

South hemisphere person here! I'm from Argentina, and actually Halloween hasn't been a thing at all here until very recently. Still, it is only celebrated partially and mostly by billingual schools, since they tend to follow UK and USA traditions. Trick or treating isn't a thing here, and I think it will never be. The ones that celebrate do so privately, like a birthday with spooky costumes. Some bars, nightclubs and pubs do costume parties for adults as well, but nothing more than that. That being said, we're absolutely used to holidays being celebrated completely backwards, since most are based in northern hemisphere seasonal celebrations. Easter is in autumn, and Christmas is in the middle of summer with temperatures that on average are 30-38°C (86-100°F) and some people still choose to dress up as Papá Noel (Santa) with the full costume and fake beard, albeit on less thick fabrics. I wished we were less influenced by the northern hemisphere, actually. It feels like trying to get to your neighbour's party and arriving 6 months late.
Agreed, I’m a Kiwi and I don’t love how we follow Northern Hemisphere traditions. Our last government introduced Matariki as an actual winter public holiday and I love it ❤❤❤
Agh same, while i do love halloween, most holidays are 'imported' and can feel out of place, as they are attached to the seasons (for ex the autumn and winter equinox for halloween and new years respectively I think). It makes me wonder what seasonal holidays we would have had if it weren't for colonization :/

Person from NZ here! Halloween is definitely becoming more of a thing, but costumes are generally more spring friendly with some warmth for the slight chill air at night. There are Halloween parties e.g., house parties, events run by clubs, etc, and grocery stores have sales for confectionery. Less emphasis on pumpkins and ‘fall’ and more on the spooky aspect. But yeah, Christmas picnics at the beach with a bbq definitely hit different. Wouldn’t have it any other way!

Ooooh, If you worked at Michael, I have a question for you. I've just visited NYC (I live in France) and of course, I went to Michaels - such an amazing store - and I was so confused to see that almost all fall/halloween decor were on sale, even if it was still mid-end September. Is it normal? I don't complain because I grabbed some cute garlands and lights with a great discount. But usually, in France, we have discount on seasonal items AFTER the event (for exemple, discounted prices on "left over" Christmas decor in January/February) but I never heard about discounts BEFORE 😂
@@sandrab5477 I have not worked at Michael, but the craft store I used to work at had weird seasonal range, usually starting and ending 1-2 months earlier from regular retail stores. This is because if you're going to make something for the holiday, you want to have the supplies available well in advance. (Our store started getting Christmas stuff around June/July). Most of the craft stores don't have enough space to have more than one season's worth of seasonal merchandise, so if you need to get Christmas supplies in early, you need to get rid of the Halloween stuff early too. By the end of my time working there, I hated Christmas SO MUCH.
@@sandrab5477If you want to find fall stuff in the US, go to the store in mid-July or August. Same with Christmas stuff. When I worked at A.C. Moore, we had Christmas stuff up before Halloween even started.

Fall / Halloween stuff is really not cultural here so it's hard to find cute decor pieces so I was still glad to grab fall discounted items.

As an Australian, it's spring (but feels like summer) during halloween, autumn for easter, summer for christmas - we just ignore the seasons and celebrate, people still put up fake snow on christmas etc. I sorta pretend its autumn during halloween and try to wear sweaters, then suffer the consequences - it's usually incredibly hot in your halloween costume as well.. I'd kill for a proper fall halloween :( Some people here HATE that we celebrate halloween - I got yelled at when I was like 12 for trick or treating with my younger sister and nephew, the woman said "THIS IS AUSTRALIA NOT AMERICA!!!". Haven't been before or since. it annoys me to no end because it's an irish tradition no?? we have so many irish decendents here. also, literally the best thing about america is y'alls commitment to halloween and holidays in general IMHO - it just brings so much joy! why are we copying america in all the shit things (sprawling carparks, insane consumerism, wars) and not the cool fun things?? oooh you got me heated lmao.
Wow! Where are you that it feels like Summer for you at Halloween? I’m in Melbourne and we barely get a decently warm December let alone a warm October! I’m so jealous! Today is ok but we’re expecting a top of 21°c. The last two days have been cold as 😂 A lot of the older generations hold on to the idea that it’s an American tradition, but it did come from a Celtic superstition/tradition of warding off evil spirits at the end of the summer. I believe trick-or-treating is the American contribution to the holiday. I went into Halloween grinch mode about ten years ago but I’m slowly getting back into it. I enjoy some of the more kitschy decorations now and I love the cute string lights they come out with every year. I think watching more TH-cam and Instagram accounts that are sharing their passion for the season is fuelling my new desire to decorate.

Here in Finland we actually go trick-or-treating during Easter! or it's not Exactly like trick-or-treating, but very similar. We call it "virpominen". On Palm Sunday we dress up, usually as witches (which look very different to American witches, think more "babushka" with headscarves and layers of skirts and painted freckles and blushed up cheeks) and witches' cats, and go to neighbors' doors with our "virpomisoksat", which are small branches of pussywillow (the young branches with catkins during Spring) that the kids decorate with colorful ribbons and pipecleaners and paper and stuff. Then when the neighbor opens the door the kids say a little rhyme while waving their virpomisoksat about, and the gist of the rhyme is that "if you give me payment (candy) I will give you this cool branch." But you also wish the household much prosperity and health on the coming year and whatnot. Then the people give you candy and compliment your costume and you give them one virpomisoksa and leave to go to the next destination. And since you give at least one virpomisoksa away at each house, you really need to prepare and make Many if you want to get a substancial amount of candy. The tradition is actually original to Karelia to my knowledge, but it spread to Finland after the evacuations during the Winter War and the Continuation War (which ended in 1944). It's inspired by that part of the Bible where Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and people waved palm leaves for him, but since we don't have palm trees we use willow. And instead of Jesus we get candy. (I would like to add that the version of virpominen I'm familiar with is much more secular than the original version, we didn't get our branches blessed at a church or anything, which to my knowledge is part of the original Eastern Orthodox tradition.) I've also heard that kids nowadays don't really do virpominen at all anymore, which makes me sad because I used to love it when I was a kid 10-15 years ago :(( EDIT apparently lots of Finnish kids do still do virpominen!! not just in my neighborhood or in my social circles

@@moxellex ohh love to hear that!! the "dressing up as witches" part of the virpominen tradition is actually influenced by the Easter traditions of the West Coast of Finland (Pohjanmaa) where they have had this "trulli" tradition for a long time. it got absorbed into the Karelia-born virpominen tradition in the late 1900s (in Karelia the kids originally just wore their Sunday best). but our western coast has always had big concentrations of Swedish speaking Finns, so that's probably a part of why we share similar versions of that tradition with Sweden!! so cool :)
In Sweden we also have the tradition of dressing up as witches and wizards and going to our neighbours to wish them happy easter and good health but instead of small willow twigs we gave out hand drawn cards in return for candy. But going on maundy thursday instead of palm sunday because that is the day all witches fly to Blåkulla. Our traditions are a hodgepodge of pagan and Christian beliefs. 😅

As a southern hemisphere dweller, my childhood memories of Halloween are shrouded in feeling incredibly sweaty in my costumes and annoyed that it was too light outside to be spooky I have several '00s photos of me in makeup that is just melting off my face 😂😂😂

Stuck with no power after hurricane Helene earlier today. It is 9pm, I am eating chicken and mashed potatoes that I heated up on my makeshift stove (candles in crock pot with pie tins on top, listen it works) and needed to watch something to put myself at ease in these trying times...was super thrilled when I realized today was the day of your update 😭😭😭 thank you for being there even when you don't realize you are 💖💖💖

In my country our chase-away-evil-spirits type of thing is actually at the beginning of spring (Northern hemisphere still) And we have festivals to celebrate it as well as the beginning of spring, new life, positive stuff. From a pagan standpoint beginning of spring makes more sense, like why are you chasing the evil spirit of summer? It's also a completely different vibe, not creepy gory stuff, but cute happy. During the traditional festival people usually animal masks and sheepskin and like funny costumes. Anyway, a lot of colours, rainbow explosion
It's sort of similar here in Spain. Although we base most of our festivities around catholic celebrations, there is a lot of symbolism for springtime celebrations that roots way back beyond it. As you say, it's a time for renovation, although the year stars on winter officially by our current calendar, it wasn't always like that, and people used to base their concept of a year cycle on nature and agriculture. At spring people are celebrating coming out of a cold, harsh season and seeds star to grow again. It's always associated with abundance. We don't celebrate Easter really but we do have Passover and celebrations surrounding it that really have little ties to Christianity (it just happens to be a Virgin/saint that day not casually placed by the Church so that people could still do their customary holidays under the wing of religion). In the town where I live specially spring is the most important time of the year and the biggest holiday in terms of activities, days off, people's investment and such, and it's heavily based on crops, local food, folklore costumes and dances... Fall on the other side is a very short season here and there's no much focus on it (although I do love it). We do have all saints day which overlaps with Halloween in time (because they both come from Samhein I believe), but traditionally it's more like a solemn day for commemorating lost loved ones. There are some creepy folk tales here and there but I don't believe people ever dressed up or did anything to chase evil spirits away.
Being in east coast Canada during Halloween as a kid was getting so hype for your costume and then having to cover the whole thing with a winter coat so you don't freeze to death while trick or treating lol
Being in lower New York state, I would often alternate between freezing one year and then sweating the next. One year I was a ninja and I was half out of the costume by sunset it was so warm. To be fair, it was also *thick polyester.*
We live in New Hampshire, and I remember one year I was a fairy princess and had to wear my bulky green corduroy coat underneath my pretty fairy princess costume because it was snowing and cold on Halloween, I looked like a fairy princess on steroids 😂😅😂
In Nevada getting the day off from school every Halloween for Nevada Day, because it's a state holiday; and having warm weather so no one had to cover their costume in a coat.
12:25 I'm from Brazil. in my city most people (especially +35yo) skip Halloween and go straight to Christmas, there are stores here that are already decorated for Christmas (and it's like 37ºC/99ºF) but usually younger folk kinda do it like a spooky season only, not really fall themed. there are a lot of parties to go dressed as spooky character and the few places I see decorated for Halloween focuses more on spider webs, blood slpaters, skeletons and more "fantasy" theme rather than "autumnal"
Absolutely! Is more of a comercial thing (in my 30s here so i grew up in the 90s and early 00s and we just saw that as an exotic thing gringos did ) i still do in fact. we just like the costumes and that you can go to parties usually lol - my gradma is alredy thinkig abt christmas during that time

Australian checking in; Halloween was never that big when I was a kid, but it’s becoming more prevalent. Some of the older generation are very anti-Halloween because they see it as an American holiday, but we’re getting more merch here and more kids come every year. Because it’s spring it’s not super cold and most trick or treating is done when it’s still light out or dusk, just cause it doesn’t get dark till later. It’s also hot 👍🏻 but I love Halloween, and that’s becoming the norm here.
If it's any consolation, Halloween was originally Irish and given our current and historical emigration rates here in Ireland I'd guess a solid group of y'all down under have Irish ancestry. It's literally your heritage, go forth and be spooky!!! Let no one tell you you can't be whimsical and fun
@nojerama788 I'm actually first gen Australian with British parents, so while they're not Irish, they're familiar. Dad was absolutely fine with me celebrating Beltaine on Halloween (because we're in the southern hemisphere and you can't just substitute equinoxes). It was specifically like trick or treating and costume parties that he had a problem with, the weirdo. But this was 30 years ago, I think he's given up with my niece and nephews 😅

@@kademelien9363 Not germanic specifically - though there too, seasonal changes where celebrated all over Europe, with spring usually being the celebration for fertility (take example from pretty much any mammal in the region) but yes! Most holidays sort of usurped holidays that were there, and changed over time. But also I think (based on how the christmas door was) it would've been like a hyped up kids celebration of "modern" easter, not actually ostara related anymore, so I don't think it would've been nsfw - the ostara traditions didn't make it to the US.

The roots of these traditions just got lost, but are still practiced to this day. And yes, I agree with you that the depiction in the movie would be really modern. Just like they did with Christmas and Santa Claus. I just found the thought of it really funny if it would go a bit further
@@kademelien9363 I believe you misunderstood, literally nothing I said indicated anything was christian in origin. I stated that whilst the specific celebration of Ostara is germanic, spring time fertility celebrations are not exclusive to germanic people. The thought could go further - there could be a whole forest of pagan holidays waiting out there to be rediscovered. A lot of those would be funky af.
For us pagan folk, Samhain is linked to the seasons, so while it’s Samhain here, it’s Beltane there, and vice versa! But Halloween itself would be WIRTD to celebrate in spring.
Also pagan here, I can't imagine having a hot Halloween when having snow that day isn't unheard of here in Michigan (we actually got a snowstorm last year)
As an aussie, I celebrate as the seasons dictate, so yep everything is reversed, but there are some who celebrate with the northern hemisphere. I celebrate 'christian' holidays for fun so it is very funny having Easter in autumn, Christmas in summer, etc. It's just the way we've always had it so eh

In Australia halloween is gaining traction but people seem to focus more on the horror side. Some people do trick or treating but most don't. We never did it growing up so it was only something you experienced through tv

So yeah, nothing autumn(y) really, you don't see real pumpkins, or orange leaves decorations, just spooky and scary things. Is more about dressing up, eating candy, and scaring children. Good times.
That sounds like a good way to transport a celebration to a different hemisphere. Then again, I get doing that if it's a celebration that matters to the person/family because they're from a place or a culture where it's a thing, but the way that some extremely commercialised celebrations get like, force fed into cultures and countries where they aren't a thing, feels ugh. Glad it seems like people where you live have made it their own at least!
Yeah, we do the same thing in Australia (at least the area I'm from). People decorate their houses with skeletons, and spiders, or make them look like crime scenes haha The biggest part is definitely dressing up and trick-or-treating, and older kids have Halloween parties where they might dress up and watch horror movies together, though some still go trick or treating

I was born and lived in the Northern Hemisphere for 20+ years, when i moved to the land of what is Florida, it feels like a very very very long never ending Summer. I bring Autumnal vibes everywhere I go otherwise it would never exist.

Yep, fellow Texan as well. As a kid it was a complete travesty if you had to wear a coat over your Halloween costume, so you always hoped for mild weather that wasn't too warm or too cold. If you made your costume too warm you just sweated a lot.

I, too, grew up enjoying Halloween. As a kid, I always looked forward to spooky season. My birthday is right afterward, so I got really excited. Kind of like a pre-birthday party for a whole month! Now that my son is grown, I decorate all for me. He hates the macabre decor I happen to love. I love your Over the Garden Wall mantel! I've never seen the series, but I've seen pictures. Yes. I did a little risk assessment in my head. Not ideal, a small chance of a good cut needing stiches, but that sucker needs to be held still somehow, and Rachel is very experienced. I rated it as efficient, small risk of moderate consequences so continue, concentrate and don't let the boss see you.

I'm so glad I grew up in the Midwest. Halloween was a big deal for us. My mom made it magical, as much if not moreso than Christmas even. You've inspired me to resurrect some of those paper crafts to decorate my apartment windows. I'm at floor level, not facing the street but the college kids all walk between my building and the neighboring building to get to class. I think they'd get a charge out of it and it will make my heart very happy! Thanks for the inspiration, Rachel!

PS Yes Rachel it is Spring down here in New Zealand and Halloween is a Seasonal Festival from Celtic times , so much easier finding punkins in Autumn LOL anyway for about 10 years My Darling and I would have Halloween gatherings at Our Cottage in the Woods, The first year I had to lure the Children of the Night down our very long and scary driveway . We never gave our sweets but would give out cool Crystals or scary plastic skellies etc . The first few years We had it inside but it got too big from word of mouth. I would spend ages decorating the courtyard and rooms, then most of the time would leave the decorations up with all my Other Witch things . Would do different themes like Victorian themes, Malice in Wonderland, Screampunk Circus.... would drag out the old Harmonium onto the deck, set up different areas for taking photos to burn onto discs and give out ... the kids in the street ended up helping out as they grew up , even playing in Steampunk band one year. Then in the evening would have a little Beltane party to celebrate the actual Seasonal Festival of Fertility . Over the years we were interviewed for magazines, books and talked about on the radio so it actually got too big but by that time our whole street had got involved as it was a no exit and really safe ..so now I dress up and wander about visiting neighbours and having fun )and it is no longer stressful) PPS If they Children would ask for sweets my darling would limp over and offer to pull their teeth out with some very long and rusty pliers to save them time and dental costs later in life LOL

as a first gen asian american, i didn’t have nostalgia for halloween or autumn since my family wouldn’t decorate, bake, do outdoor activities, etc. in fact it was the worst time of year for me because it meant i had to sit in my freezing cold room all season (my dad wouldn’t let us put the thermostat above 55F!) and study, study, study. usually with some sort of respiratory infection too🤧 but when i left the house i slowly began to see the appeal of fall - i could turn the heat up in my apartment and cozy up to a good book, study in coffee shops with a hot drink to accompany me, celebrate friendsgivings where we would cook and laugh and drink (i went to uni in canada dw). then when i graduated, my partner made the fatal mistake of teaching me how to bake😂 we went to all the orchards and pumpkin patches and would make pies, fritters, breads, ciders galore. i now also love dressing up as fantastical characters for not only halloween but renfaire too. i might not have been born into the magic of the season, but now i can’t get enough of it!

Halloween in New Zealand was almost non-existent until the last 20 years with the rise of social media, now the young folks embrace it, but it's not an official holiday or anything (I'm 45!) Most households still don't celebrate or have any treats to administer to trick or treaters. But spring is slowly making it's way through the rain and artic blasts! Also daylight savings starts this weekend so it's also lighter for longer, so not so spooky.

South hemisphere person here! I'm from Argentina, and actually Halloween hasn't been a thing at all here until very recently. Still, it is only celebrated partially and mostly by billingual schools, since they tend to follow UK and USA traditions. Trick or treating isn't a thing here, and I think it will never be. The ones that celebrate do so privately, like a birthday with spooky costumes. Some bars, nightclubs and pubs do costume parties for adults as well, but nothing more than that.
That being said, we're absolutely used to holidays being celebrated completely backwards, since most are based in northern hemisphere seasonal celebrations. Easter is in autumn, and Christmas is in the middle of summer with temperatures that on average are 30-38°C (86-100°F) and some people still choose to dress up as Papá Noel (Santa) with the full costume and fake beard, albeit on less thick fabrics.
I wished we were less influenced by the northern hemisphere, actually. It feels like trying to get to your neighbour's party and arriving 6 months late.
Agreed, I’m a Kiwi and I don’t love how we follow Northern Hemisphere traditions. Our last government introduced Matariki as an actual winter public holiday and I love it ❤❤❤

Agh same, while i do love halloween, most holidays are 'imported' and can feel out of place, as they are attached to the seasons (for ex the autumn and winter equinox for halloween and new years respectively I think). It makes me wonder what seasonal holidays we would have had if it weren't for colonization :/

Person from NZ here! Halloween is definitely becoming more of a thing, but costumes are generally more spring friendly with some warmth for the slight chill air at night. There are Halloween parties e.g., house parties, events run by clubs, etc, and grocery stores have sales for confectionery. Less emphasis on pumpkins and ‘fall’ and more on the spooky aspect. But yeah, Christmas picnics at the beach with a bbq definitely hit different. Wouldn’t have it any other way!

I've just visited NYC (I live in France) and of course, I went to Michaels - such an amazing store - and I was so confused to see that almost all fall/halloween decor were on sale, even if it was still mid-end September. Is it normal? I don't complain because I grabbed some cute garlands and lights with a great discount. But usually, in France, we have discount on seasonal items AFTER the event (for exemple, discounted prices on "left over" Christmas decor in January/February) but I never heard about discounts BEFORE 😂
@@sandrab5477 I have not worked at Michael, but the craft store I used to work at had weird seasonal range, usually starting and ending 1-2 months earlier from regular retail stores. This is because if you're going to make something for the holiday, you want to have the supplies available well in advance. (Our store started getting Christmas stuff around June/July). Most of the craft stores don't have enough space to have more than one season's worth of seasonal merchandise, so if you need to get Christmas supplies in early, you need to get rid of the Halloween stuff early too. By the end of my time working there, I hated Christmas SO MUCH.

Fall / Halloween stuff is really not cultural here so it's hard to find cute decor pieces so I was still glad to grab fall discounted items.

As an Australian, it's spring (but feels like summer) during halloween, autumn for easter, summer for christmas - we just ignore the seasons and celebrate, people still put up fake snow on christmas etc. I sorta pretend its autumn during halloween and try to wear sweaters, then suffer the consequences - it's usually incredibly hot in your halloween costume as well.. I'd kill for a proper fall halloween :(
Some people here HATE that we celebrate halloween - I got yelled at when I was like 12 for trick or treating with my younger sister and nephew, the woman said "THIS IS AUSTRALIA NOT AMERICA!!!". Haven't been before or since. it annoys me to no end because it's an irish tradition no?? we have so many irish decendents here. also, literally the best thing about america is y'alls commitment to halloween and holidays in general IMHO - it just brings so much joy! why are we copying america in all the shit things (sprawling carparks, insane consumerism, wars) and not the cool fun things?? oooh you got me heated lmao.

A lot of the older generations hold on to the idea that it’s an American tradition, but it did come from a Celtic superstition/tradition of warding off evil spirits at the end of the summer. I believe trick-or-treating is the American contribution to the holiday. I went into Halloween grinch mode about ten years ago but I’m slowly getting back into it. I enjoy some of the more kitschy decorations now and I love the cute string lights they come out with every year. I think watching more TH-cam and Instagram accounts that are sharing their passion for the season is fuelling my new desire to decorate.

Here in Finland we actually go trick-or-treating during Easter! or it's not Exactly like trick-or-treating, but very similar. We call it "virpominen". On Palm Sunday we dress up, usually as witches (which look very different to American witches, think more "babushka" with headscarves and layers of skirts and painted freckles and blushed up cheeks) and witches' cats, and go to neighbors' doors with our "virpomisoksat", which are small branches of pussywillow (the young branches with catkins during Spring) that the kids decorate with colorful ribbons and pipecleaners and paper and stuff. Then when the neighbor opens the door the kids say a little rhyme while waving their virpomisoksat about, and the gist of the rhyme is that "if you give me payment (candy) I will give you this cool branch." But you also wish the household much prosperity and health on the coming year and whatnot. Then the people give you candy and compliment your costume and you give them one virpomisoksa and leave to go to the next destination. And since you give at least one virpomisoksa away at each house, you really need to prepare and make Many if you want to get a substancial amount of candy.
The tradition is actually original to Karelia to my knowledge, but it spread to Finland after the evacuations during the Winter War and the Continuation War (which ended in 1944). It's inspired by that part of the Bible where Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and people waved palm leaves for him, but since we don't have palm trees we use willow. And instead of Jesus we get candy.
(I would like to add that the version of virpominen I'm familiar with is much more secular than the original version, we didn't get our branches blessed at a church or anything, which to my knowledge is part of the original Eastern Orthodox tradition.)
I've also heard that kids nowadays don't really do virpominen at all anymore, which makes me sad because I used to love it when I was a kid 10-15 years ago :((
EDIT apparently lots of Finnish kids do still do virpominen!! not just in my neighborhood or in my social circles

@@moxellex ohh love to hear that!! the "dressing up as witches" part of the virpominen tradition is actually influenced by the Easter traditions of the West Coast of Finland (Pohjanmaa) where they have had this "trulli" tradition for a long time. it got absorbed into the Karelia-born virpominen tradition in the late 1900s (in Karelia the kids originally just wore their Sunday best). but our western coast has always had big concentrations of Swedish speaking Finns, so that's probably a part of why we share similar versions of that tradition with Sweden!! so cool :)
In Sweden we also have the tradition of dressing up as witches and wizards and going to our neighbours to wish them happy easter and good health but instead of small willow twigs we gave out hand drawn cards in return for candy. But going on maundy thursday instead of palm sunday because that is the day all witches fly to Blåkulla.
Our traditions are a hodgepodge of pagan and Christian beliefs. 😅

It's sort of similar here in Spain. Although we base most of our festivities around catholic celebrations, there is a lot of symbolism for springtime celebrations that roots way back beyond it. As you say, it's a time for renovation, although the year stars on winter officially by our current calendar, it wasn't always like that, and people used to base their concept of a year cycle on nature and agriculture. At spring people are celebrating coming out of a cold, harsh season and seeds star to grow again. It's always associated with abundance. We don't celebrate Easter really but we do have Passover and celebrations surrounding it that really have little ties to Christianity (it just happens to be a Virgin/saint that day not casually placed by the Church so that people could still do their customary holidays under the wing of religion). In the town where I live specially spring is the most important time of the year and the biggest holiday in terms of activities, days off, people's investment and such, and it's heavily based on crops, local food, folklore costumes and dances... Fall on the other side is a very short season here and there's no much focus on it (although I do love it). We do have all saints day which overlaps with Halloween in time (because they both come from Samhein I believe), but traditionally it's more like a solemn day for commemorating lost loved ones. There are some creepy folk tales here and there but I don't believe people ever dressed up or did anything to chase evil spirits away.
Being in east coast Canada during Halloween as a kid was getting so hype for your costume and then having to cover the whole thing with a winter coat so you don't freeze to death while trick or treating lol

We live in New Hampshire, and I remember one year I was a fairy princess and had to wear my bulky green corduroy coat underneath my pretty fairy princess costume because it was snowing and cold on Halloween, I looked like a fairy princess on steroids 😂😅😂
In Nevada getting the day off from school every Halloween for Nevada Day, because it's a state holiday; and having warm weather so no one had to cover their costume in a coat.
12:25 I'm from Brazil. in my city most people (especially +35yo) skip Halloween and go straight to Christmas, there are stores here that are already decorated for Christmas (and it's like 37ºC/99ºF) but usually younger folk kinda do it like a spooky season only, not really fall themed. there are a lot of parties to go dressed as spooky character and the few places I see decorated for Halloween focuses more on spider webs, blood slpaters, skeletons and more "fantasy" theme rather than "autumnal"

Australian checking in; Halloween was never that big when I was a kid, but it’s becoming more prevalent. Some of the older generation are very anti-Halloween because they see it as an American holiday, but we’re getting more merch here and more kids come every year. Because it’s spring it’s not super cold and most trick or treating is done when it’s still light out or dusk, just cause it doesn’t get dark till later. It’s also hot 👍🏻 but I love Halloween, and that’s becoming the norm here.

@nojerama788 I'm actually first gen Australian with British parents, so while they're not Irish, they're familiar. Dad was absolutely fine with me celebrating Beltaine on Halloween (because we're in the southern hemisphere and you can't just substitute equinoxes). It was specifically like trick or treating and costume parties that he had a problem with, the weirdo. But this was 30 years ago, I think he's given up with my niece and nephews 😅

Most holidays sort of usurped holidays that were there, and changed over time.
But also I think (based on how the christmas door was) it would've been like a hyped up kids celebration of "modern" easter, not actually ostara related anymore, so I don't think it would've been nsfw - the ostara traditions didn't make it to the US.

For us pagan folk, Samhain is linked to the seasons, so while it’s Samhain here, it’s Beltane there, and vice versa! But Halloween itself would be WIRTD to celebrate in spring.
Also pagan here, I can't imagine having a hot Halloween when having snow that day isn't unheard of here in Michigan (we actually got a snowstorm last year)
As an aussie, I celebrate as the seasons dictate, so yep everything is reversed, but there are some who celebrate with the northern hemisphere. I celebrate 'christian' holidays for fun so it is very funny having Easter in autumn, Christmas in summer, etc. It's just the way we've always had it so eh

In Australia halloween is gaining traction but people seem to focus more on the horror side. Some people do trick or treating but most don't. We never did it growing up so it was only something you experienced through tv

12:11 At least in my country (Chile) is more of a Spooky celebration. So, more ghosts, mosters, scary movies and things like that theme. And candy. A loooot of candy. So yeah, nothing autumn(y) really, you don't see real pumpkins, or orange leaves decorations, just spooky and scary things. Is more about dressing up, eating candy, and scaring children. Good times.
That sounds like a good way to transport a celebration to a different hemisphere. Then again, I get doing that if it's a celebration that matters to the person/family because they're from a place or a culture where it's a thing, but the way that some extremely commercialised celebrations get like, force fed into cultures and countries where they aren't a thing, feels ugh.

Yeah, we do the same thing in Australia (at least the area I'm from). People decorate their houses with skeletons, and spiders, or make them look like crime scenes haha
The biggest part is definitely dressing up and trick-or-treating, and older kids have Halloween parties where they might dress up and watch horror movies together, though some still go trick or treating

Yep, fellow Texan as well. As a kid it was a complete travesty if you had to wear a coat over your Halloween costume, so you always hoped for mild weather that wasn't too warm or too cold. If you made your costume too warm you just sweated a lot.

I, too, grew up enjoying Halloween. As a kid, I always looked forward to spooky season. My birthday is right afterward, so I got really excited. Kind of like a pre-birthday party for a whole month! Now that my son is grown, I decorate all for me. He hates the macabre decor I happen to love. I love your Over the Garden Wall mantel! I've never seen the series, but I've seen pictures. Right up my alley! So cool!

Yes. I did a little risk assessment in my head. Not ideal, a small chance of a good cut needing stiches, but that sucker needs to be held still somehow, and Rachel is very experienced.

I'm so glad I grew up in the Midwest. Halloween was a big deal for us. My mom made it magical, as much if not moreso than Christmas even.
You've inspired me to resurrect some of those paper crafts to decorate my apartment windows. I'm at floor level, not facing the street but the college kids all walk between my building and the neighboring building to get to class. I think they'd get a charge out of it and it will make my heart very happy!

PS Yes Rachel it is Spring down here in New Zealand and Halloween is a Seasonal Festival from Celtic times , so much easier finding punkins in Autumn LOL anyway for about 10 years My Darling and I would have Halloween gatherings at Our Cottage in the Woods, The first year I had to lure the Children of the Night down our very long and scary driveway . We never gave our sweets but would give out cool Crystals or scary plastic skellies etc . The first few years We had it inside but it got too big from word of mouth. I would spend ages decorating the courtyard and rooms, then most of the time would leave the decorations up with all my Other Witch things . Would do different themes like Victorian themes, Malice in Wonderland, Screampunk Circus.... would drag out the old Harmonium onto the deck, set up different areas for taking photos to burn onto discs and give out ... the kids in the street ended up helping out as they grew up , even playing in Steampunk band one year. Then in the evening would have a little Beltane party to celebrate the actual Seasonal Festival of Fertility . Over the years we were interviewed for magazines, books and talked about on the radio so it actually got too big but by that time our whole street had got involved as it was a no exit and really safe ..so now I dress up and wander about visiting neighbours and having fun )and it is no longer stressful) PPS If they Children would ask for sweets my darling would limp over and offer to pull their teeth out with some very long and rusty pliers to save them time and dental costs later in life LOL

Roommate and I did our house last week. We went to Michaels thinking to get one or two things, but nearly everything for Fall and Halloween were on sale. On Sale. In the middle of September. It was weird, but we got some cool stuff for a good price.

as a first gen asian american, i didn’t have nostalgia for halloween or autumn since my family wouldn’t decorate, bake, do outdoor activities, etc. in fact it was the worst time of year for me because it meant i had to sit in my freezing cold room all season (my dad wouldn’t let us put the thermostat above 55F!) and study, study, study. usually with some sort of respiratory infection too🤧 but when i left the house i slowly began to see the appeal of fall - i could turn the heat up in my apartment and cozy up to a good book, study in coffee shops with a hot drink to accompany me, celebrate friendsgivings where we would cook and laugh and drink (i went to uni in canada dw). then when i graduated, my partner made the fatal mistake of teaching me how to bake😂 we went to all the orchards and pumpkin patches and would make pies, fritters, breads, ciders galore. i now also love dressing up as fantastical characters for not only halloween but renfaire too. i might not have been born into the magic of the season, but now i can’t get enough of it!
