WOOOO-EEEEE, y'all. As a final project of the Halloween season, my big ol' brain and I decided that it was going to be a freakin' DOOZIE. I absolutely love recreating old costumes, and I came across a couple "carousel dresses" in my search. I was instantly obsessed with the idea BUT... I wanted to see if I could make it spin.
So began the trials and tribulations, curses and band-aids that went into this project. I hope you all enjoy and have an amazing Halloween!!!

I'm an engineer and I'm impressed. You chose a challenging entry into mechanical builds, and I loved seeing the progression. In my experience, engineering is failing more times than you can count until you find the solution that works well enough, lol. And every time you learn so next time is a little bit less of a slog. Great job!

Ok, but I AM an engineer watching this video and I am impressed with your creativity and problem solving. I can design whatever amazing solution I want, but at the end of the day I have to make everything work with the materials that I have, and you did that flawlessly. You (and Nick) did some awesome engineering on this project, and you should be proud of it!

Here here! I was scrolling to see if any other engineers chimed in - Rachel you did a superb job & you prototyped - tested throughout the process ! And ran with the punches when you had problems & had to swap in materials or parts, Like we would :)

As an engineer watching this video I gave you an A++ for the effort and ingenuity. As an aeronautical engineer and not a mechanical engineer I probably couldn't have done any better lol.
I thought that same thought. My spouse and I met studying Electrical Engineering, and my first thought was most engineers wouldn't do any better, because they pretty much specialize in one thing only, like making a fridge or a power plant, and they end up knowing little to nothing of other disciplines.
I love how involved and invested Nick was to this project! We have slowly gotten to see him but just the fact that we could just barely see his knee during the wrap up really showed how much he wanted to be there! Definitely think this was and is a good bonding experience❤❤❤

The buns were so stinkin' cute and already made me think of pumpkins because of your hair color, and then my delayed observational butt finally saw the little stems in them and I should've known the pumpkin look was intentional from the beginning. Whimsical Overlord indeed

The development of Nick's green band-aid first appearing and then becoming more destroyed as the skirt construction continued, speak volumes to what this process was actually like 🤣
Watching this as I slowly loose my own marbles sewing a circus inspired hoop skirt was the extra encouragement I needed to work through the night 😂 amazing job as always

There were so many parts where I was like, 'girl, stop trying to make this work and start over with a more solid base' 😂 but she did the dang thing, so... The relief I felt when she replaced the foam with metal. They say perfection is the enemy of finished, but maybe not in the case of engineering...?
It’s especially true in engineering, and the “we must issue the spec because we must award the build contract before the funding expires” arguments between program management and engineering departments is the stuff of somewhat boring legend.

Every video leaves me wanting to do something creative and whimsical (and a little crazy😉). Your videos are inspiring, and thank you for including your "mistakes" and frustrations because, unlike tutorial videos, I have a better idea of what I'm getting into and to not be surprised when it doesn't turn out "perfect". I have been eyeing that exact photo as a costume for a year or two, and I never would have thought to make it a actual working carousel! My dad loves carousels and diy, I’ll definitely be sending him this.

For not really knowing about inserting motorized mechanisms into a fabric based costumes, I think you did a solid job for your first attempt!

You and your lovely husband did a fine job, give yourself credit as not many people would have even thought of a disco ball motor which was a clever idea. Again, how many motorised/fabric-based costumes have you made prior to this?
It works and the costume looks really quite cute! This would be really fun if you did a vintage doll makeup with this with. (As if you were a little girls favourite doll from the 50s and you were purchase from some little antique shop in Europe as a gift from your papa on one of his business trips when you were a child and you were found tucked away in the attic or something decades later.) ♥️

This is cute! And sometimes it's the learning process - now ya know what you'd need to do to have a carousel skirt, or spooky season rotating skirt (thinking like a mobile of pumpkins, ghosts, and black cats), or forest themed rotating hat brim, whatever you can think of

I'm an engineer watching and I was sitting watching going "DEAR GOD YAAS" so you're doing amazing sweetie.
As I'm sure many have said already, this was an amazing work. Your husband is wonderful for going with you on this journey, you are for making it, too...and Frodo is always there for a wonderful supportive spoon times. Costuming requires so many strange skills from so many different (and quite often unexpected) fields and you pull them together with grace and humor.
I'm not ashamed to admit I've been scanning shorts on TH-cam for the past hour, just waiting for a rachel video to drop.

There's a Mexican musical name "Mentiras", wich has a Drag version and for the "Main Look" of one of the characters name "Dulce" has this concept of the carousel incorporate to her skirt, I have seen it in person and it actually spins, but I never thought about how complicated and detail it can gets to do that, in the moment I just thought that it was a cool gimmick
2 year robotic's kid here, for further projects (if you do wanna try and do something like this again) I'd suggest REV robotic's motors, they can handle a lot of weight and pressure but they are on the expensive side (Going to be up to 30 bucks on the higher end) and there's, from what I know, 3 different levels of power. 20:1 is the lowest, 40:1 med, and the Core Hex Motors are the highest (both on power and price)
But yeah! fun to watch how you tackled the problem with the moving skirt!
Coming up with that mechanism is in its own impressive (Dyscalculia brain here) but having that ingenuity to come up with existing things (like a disco ball motor) is just mind-blowing to me! Also, I like that it spins slowly and the "glitches" really add to the charm for me, because it gives of "old music box that has been playing for centuries" vibes.

The concept was brilliantly creative, and the execution of said concept hilarious. I feel like I just watched Cinderella’s mice make a ball gown. That said, I’ll be murmuring, “Mary Poppinesque” under my breath for next week or so. 😂

I know this was incredibly stressful for you to make, but it was incredibly entertaining to watch. Hopefully that falls more on the side of comforting than on insult to injury.
Rachel's chaotic approach to sewing is what's finally going to get me to learn how to use the sewing machine my mom bought for me 😂 I'm too impatient and chaotic to make perfect pieces and not jam my thread every time I try to use it, but also too much of a perfectionist to be okay with imperfect results so I've felt really discouraged from learning how to sew.
Rachel's channel has been so much more inspiring to me BECAUSE her chaotic brain speaks to mine and her clothes still turn out so beautiful, I believe maybe I could actually do it if I keep going. There are so many talented sewists on YT and they make beautiful projects but their workflow seems so unattainable and meticulous it can actually be a little discouraging 😅
I'm personally never going to be able to methodically plan my projects or sew a completely historically accurate piece. But I CAN jump into something way over my head and learn along the way and hopefully one day make clothes as completely stunning as Rachel's 🩷

Engineer here: kinda of a tricky project. Motors tend to get pretty heavy and bulky very fast when you need more power, moving parts require proper spacing at all times and both of these are hard to manage when you're thinking about clothing. I love the foam rim fix in the end, simple and effective.

It looks to me like there is a weeping angel being constructed on the other mannequin so I suspect that’s the next look we are getting. Not disappointed if that it coming up!

Keeping modest and not overconfident is good, but you followed the "try -> improve -> improve again -> improve again" flawlessly. Wow, this was a fun project! I love combining electronics with other art mediums, but that’s also my background. So, don’t beat yourself up over the challenge of picking better motors, it’s hard to do that even as your job! I love that you were willing to try something this creative and challenging! Perfect thing to watch while gluing leaves onto a cloak for my partners costume. Every year my town puts on a big all ages halloween parade with related festivities. It's run by a bunch of local artists and quite the event!

This is one of the most interesting costumes ever!
The little guy videos are the best! I sew into my needle felted guys using needle point needles and add threads/string that way. If you use yarn, you can also add strength by felting the yarn to the creation. It’s also how I add clay bits. I make a little loop on the back of the clay eyeball and sew it in and then felt it down in the back.
My kid wanted to make Terraria armor for Halloween-and so we made our first foray into EVA foam.
It took the better part of six weeks, mostly on weekends. Making a duct tape body double, which I then cut into four pieces to make brown paper patterns…and then taping it back into a 3-dimensional object, stuffing it with plastic shopping bags, and then putting an old t-shirt on, mostly to make easier to tell front from back. Experimenting with a heat gun, straight pins, and eventually committing to the contact cement. Taking over the garage for spraying plastidip and paint.
But, it is done! And he is even more excited about this than the Spamton Neo costume from last year, which is saying something indeed.
STOP YOURSELF!!!!! I cannot get over the adorableness that is this creation!!!! And I have to say, that when you said that you were looking for a stronger motor, I had visions of you flying upwards like a helicopter 😂. Everything you do makes my life better just from watching you do it. Thank you for all that you do for us, especially in October. ❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤
