    There's absolutely no reason to buy an SUV over a minivan, unless you do heavy towing. This thing can carry the whole family, some friends, and a lot of stuff, all while consuming substantially less fuel than an SUV with similar capabilities.

    • @shanet7511
      @shanet7511 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ground clearance, awd system differences, handling, luxury options, power, and of course like you said towing are all differences. Not everyone needs to seat 8 people all the time and just need the third row once a month for a quick trip.

    • @Tuppoo94
      @Tuppoo94 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shanet7511 @Shane T Fact is that most 4x4s and especially SUVs spend their entire lives doing shopping trips in urban environments, which means their capabilities are wasted. Having a 4x4 while living in the forest or mountains is of course justified.
      It doesn't matter whether a person needs 3 rows all the time, because the Sienna will still be more fuel efficient than other vehicles with similar capacity.
      Power etc. is a matter of taste, but I've never felt the need for a V8 when I'm sitting in traffic.

      @@shanet7511 If you have 3 or more kids you should go minivan. The interior space as well as cargo space behind the third row is so much better. You’d have to step up to a Suburban to get similar amounts of space.
      A SUV is only appropriate if you plan on towing over 3500 regularly. You’re passengers will be much happier in a minivan.

      Alex on Autos does a great job of explaining the ingenious design of Toyota’s electric generator unit drivetrain. I think if Toyota didn’t market it as an E-CVT they’d have even more interest. Not to mention citing the mileage that taxi drivers get on one drivetrain.

    Whenever Motorweek gives the annual "barrels of oil" and "CO2 footprint" information, it's always useless information. I always think, Compared to what?? Motorweek should show HOW those numbers compare to the AVERAGE for the vehicle segment. Telling me that this van will produce 4.1 tons of CO2 in a year doesn't help me unless you compare it to something.

  • @BullittHilts
    @BullittHilts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Apparently the second row is not removable due to there being seat mounted airbags to better protect children. Allowing people to disconnect airbag systems in seats doesn’t seem like the best idea so they made them fixed in the sliding tracks. Personally, I’d much prefer my kids, which will be riding in the car WAY more than long building supplies will, to be a bit safer from side impact crashes. Historically, side impact crashes were a weak point for vans because of the massive gaps between pillars A&B due to the sliding doors. You could probably cover up the 2nd row seats with thick blankets and slide 4x8 plywood in on it’s side, resting between the 2nd row seats anyway. I’d love to get one of these after they’ve been on the market for a year or two.

    • @stephenpowstinger733
      @stephenpowstinger733 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally, I don’t like manufacturers deciding for me what I can or can’t do when it is technically possible and I know what I’m doing with respect to safety.
      For example, I could always release my emergency break as needed. Now the car “tells” me to depress the brake pedal first and leave it in firmly.

    • @voided3
      @voided3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I feel that the lack of removable seats will mostly be an issue once these hit the used markets as lots of businesses buy Siennas as work vans second hand, but I hear it's only a few bolts and a connector to disconnect to remove the seats semi-permanently. Also bear in mind a 3,500 lbs. towing capacity means it can handle towing a 5x8 utility trailer, which are cheap to rent and can take more of a beating than the interior trim.

    I'm glad the Sienna still looks good. What Toyota did to the new Highlander should be illegal. They took what was just about the best looking SUV in the segment and made it look like a fuglier Rav 4.
    Since there was no mention of a V6 option I'm going to guess that was dropped. Based on the 1/4 mile performance I'd say a tire swap would get the FWD version to 60 in about 7.4 seconds which isn't too bad. I'll be interested to see what the AWD model can do, hopefully under 7 seconds due to the rear motors.

There are commercial vans for those that need more space back there, sure maybe you will do a trip here and there to the hardware store, but it's not something you might do on a regular basis and it's not like every time you head over to the hardware store, you buy large items, I would think, because if you did, you would have a truck, commercial van, or other large vehicle to accommodate. • @evdanielsson7
      @evdanielsson7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Toyota is very reliable, even with an all-new generation, for many reasons. Many parts are shared across multiple models and they go through an insanely long and strenuous testing process to make sure every part on the vehicle is up to their standards. I have a 2020 Corolla (the first year of the 12th generation) and have had zero problems with it (in March I will have had it a full year.) I also drive a lot, and would only ever trust a Toyota to get me where I need to go every time. Anyway, the new Sienna’s power train and platform are greatly shared with the 2020+ Highlander Hybrid; so, you can expect the kinks to have been worked out already, if there were any to begin with.

      I've driven vans as rentals. Most have v6. I drove the new sienna and I could not tell the difference on acceleration, other than the engine getting a bit noisy because it's a 4 cylinder. The electrical motor has enough torque to make it feel as if it were a v6. If you think about it, how many times are you really going to need all the torque? But I understand that some people prefer to just have a v6. One thing to keep in mind, eventually v6 engines will start going away, just like v8 engines have. As technology and efficiency is pushed to have auto makers by all these fuel regulations.
