I think the price ruined it still. It should’ve started at $1049-1100. A redesign and MagSafe shouldn’t warrant a $200 increase. If there was an actual display upgrade or if it came with 512gb of storage for the base sure. The second you start upgrading it is when it becomes a bad value. Plus the M1 Air is just an insane value still.

    • @jaeindapark
      @jaeindapark ปีที่แล้ว +31

Totally agree, had it been the same price as the M1, would have been a no-brainer for me. Ultimately decided to go with the 14" because a higher spec M2 Air was just not worth it.

There were somewhere around 14 scare videos that warned how bad this laptop is, but after six months, every reviewer is saying how much a joy this is to use and how none of them really needed all that power in the MBP.

Ironically, one of the reviewers back then who was saying it was much ado about nothing, and did a debate video with MaxTech about that very subject, has come out with a new video saying he was wrong about the M2 Air, and that he personally had run into performance issues.

Problem is price and base. 256 GB is a crazy base in 2022/2023 and the price difference is too much. I'm currently looking for a laptop because my Zenbook lost it's sound after installing windows 11 and it's looking like there's no way to fix it. I'm holding out until April to see if they push out a new MBA so the price of a refurbed M2 can be justified. Rn, it's 1799 CAD which comes out to $2000 CAD w/ taxes. Truly can't justify spending that much w/o a decent price cut.

I bought it the last weekend and I love it, the speakers are excellent even though they have no visible space to sound go, it's so thin, I have already played on this machine, and after those game sections I only had to charge it 2 times, it's incredible, I have the base model and you may think it's no enough, look, if you are a person who is going to use it for school, for music production or video editing and a little bit of gaming, go with the m2 MacBook Air, I come from windows and this is a potencial upgrade, if you wait till the next macbook series, you may lose opportunites to enjoy your mac sperience asap.
The name says it, they are just rummors, if you rally belive by hart that the perffect matching mac for you is going to relase soon then wait, but if you have to wait 1,5 years to got ur device then is it not worth it, just think how long youll have to be waiting and all the work you couldnt do bc you were waiting, come on if you need it then go ahead, if you choose properly I don't think you'll be unsatified.

I was in the market for a light and portable laptop and bought and tried many at COSTCO, which has a 90-day return policy. All of the Windows laptops with the new Intel chip had horrible battery life, ran hot, and had noticeable fan noise. So that pushed me to try Apple for the first time in my life. I first tried the the MBP 14, which I loved, except for the weight. It was also more computer than I needed. Then I tried the M2 MBA and fell in love. The battery life, build quality, and thin and light design are amazing. It also has a better keyboard feel than any of the Windows laptops I tried. Also the sound is great even though there are no speaker grills. It is the best portable laptop currently on the market. I got the 512GB, 8GB model, and it has all the performance I need. I do miss the screen size of my old Samsung Galaxy 15, but the battery life on that laptop was horrendous, and the build quality was lacking. If Apple comes out with a 15" MBA, I will probably upgrade to that.

I got the 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro. That thing will last about 5 years of use. Or more, since I only use it for video editing. I do everything else pretty much on my phone. Apple or android phones, it doesn’t matter, I’ll do the same exact thing on the phone. I’ll still go to a local Apple Store to check out new apple products when they come out. It’s just that, I likely don’t even buy them unless I need it. The new MacBook Air is a nice machine though for things that don’t require video editing and you need something that can run programs for maybe an office job the phones and iPads can’t run.

Hope when the M3 comes out that the M2 becomes cheaper... but knowing how apple refreshes their line up they most probably will keep the M1 for around 3 more refresh cycles with the newer models existing only for a year and not reducing in price.

Gotta agree here, I had the M1 Air but I wanted the M2 Air for the physical design, and I love the boxy feel vs the wedge. The slightly bigger screen size was worth it as well. Also love the midnight color but I put a clear skin on it so I have no problem with fingerprints. I'm only using this as a sofa surfer and as a portable Mac. I have the 16in Pro Max for serious work.

@@spacecadet2172 I would have embraced the Touchbar if they left the ESC key intact. For me the biggest problems were the ‘new” keyboard, and their quest for thinness resulted in a lot of fan noise and a hot chassis. I had a lot of thunderbolt related problems with the 2017 MBP. When the 2018 came out I felt they were overpriced even by Apple standards at the time. I ended up with a 2018 refurb which I felt is what the price should have been. I didn’t use the SD card slot or HDMI enough for those to be deal breakers though. I guess I did like my 2018 MBP but it was more of the same from the last few years, noisy and hot I have a 2019 for work now and had a lot of thunderbolt problems with this one too. This time it seemed to be an OS issue but there was a blame game going on with Apple vs everyone else. I had to wait for the next OS for those issues to be fixed and wait for my company to bless the OS.

hey there Abby, I'm in a similar situation, but I'm switching to Apple from another laptop device for their ecosystem benefits. I'm a postgrad student that just needs a solid workhorse, high battery, and one that can last for years and years. How's your experience been in these departments? I'm still not sure to just pull the trigger and see this as an investment, or go with the M1 air and save some bucks. Cheers.

@@josiahgosyne6495 Yo Josiah! Go for the M1 base if you just need it for school. It will last a few more years np and is a great value. If you're not editing videos or doing much on it, the base is great. You can even get a refurbed one for even less. Would highly recommend.

I was really thinking about getting the M2 model, but I wanted it to have 16GB of RAM and 512HD, but its price was reaching Macbook Pro area and getting too expensive, and I'm not interested in the Pro version because of my simple use (also, budget). So the M1 is a better option. My only concern is future updates, as it was released in November 2020, so it'll be 3 years this year.

The infinite waiting for the next best thing.. which always truly does seem like the next best thing that you just gotta have. The M2 air over the M1 for the taller screen. That’s really it. M2 pro over M1 pro will be interesting, especially if it’s on 5nm. They’ll certainly have to add the features he mentioned- Face ID (making the egregious notch worth something), 5G, fancier Bluetooth, hdmi 2.1, and probably 300gb/s ram with maybe a 24g option. But all that.. really isn’t that but of a deal and makes the M2 pro so passable. I’m big on screens so the M2 air would be worth it for the screen and freeing up a port by returning MagSafe. But man.. what a long time to wait between the M1 pro and M3. 3 flippin years, and even then I’ll be waiting until the price drops $400 like it did with M1. Really want the 3nm on the pro. But you KNOW that after we get 3nm.. the big thing with the M4 will be OLED. It has to be. Cuz it’ll still be on 3nm- so no revelation there. And there’s really nothing else they can add hardware wise.. maybe making 1tb standard?.. but it’ll have to be the screen. Then M5 will be 2nm. Then a big redesign with M6, and then 1nm with M7.
You heard it here first lol.
I reallllly want that OLED screen.. but I just can’t wait that long.. might not be able wait another 20+ months for 3nm.

I love the Airs form factor vs the Pro 14 (heavier and much thicker...).
The problem is to make this things last 16 GB is imperative and 512 GB is not only a good must have, it's also much more important on this M2 Air than the M1 because of the single NAND SSD on the M2 (as probably all of us here know about).
So you upgrade the Air to 16/512 GB, the problem with that is: this is a BTO (even if it is the 8/512 that is preconfigured with just a RAM upgrade) and the price is just ~€250 shy of the MBP 14" (both at MSRPs).
And who pays €2100 can easily pay €2350.
But then it gets even worse for the Air because this M2 Airs config is not a standard one (and it only as few months in the market vs one year of the Pros) and so I don't see any discounts on it.
On the other hand I can the the Pro 14" for €2000/2050, which is even lower than the Airs price (even when trying to get a discounted one).
So as much as I like the Airs form factor I can't ignore the Pro 14" at the same price, with a better CPU (and especially much better GPU), more ports (one more USB-C on the other side, HDMI 2.0 that supports 4K60 displays and SD card reader*) and a much better display (with better brightness, 120 Hz and miniLED).
*sadly it misses a USB-A port
EDIT: I used the prices on my country, Portugal (includes VAT, same in the EU)

My wife's Intel MBA (same style as m1) decided not to charge anymore. I'm hoping it's a battery thing, but I'm also pissed off it's already breaking after a couple years. If it needs extensive repairs I'm definitely upgrading her to an M1. I have an M2 and I can't justify buying another one at the current price point, even with a student discount.

The best-designed Forever Super Tin! But need improvement about like face ID. But because of the tin design of its screen, it might not fit. now they can apply Ambitious optical paths. The P40 Pro+ has a genuine 10x optical zoom, it seems, with a double prism arrangement internally. Not that much in zooming but better Camera pixel performance. But along the way maybe apple has different moves to go especially since they are focusing on M-series Chips.

I've mostly switched to using a cheap gaming laptop. It isn't that the MacBook Pro and Air aren't powerful with long battery life. Its just, well when I've had to work on a legacy Rails app for example, I can't get it to compile for the M-series. That's one minor example. Yeah, a cheap gaming laptop may not always be able to keep up with my neighbor, but it is a workhorse and I can play FortNite on it.
