Another great song jointly composed by Randy and Bernie is Early Bird .. where in the end Glenn on elec guitar gets into a kind of duel with Bernie on banjo ...bad move, Glenn - he was totally outclassed , with Bernie and his devilish grin going faster and faster on the banjo and Glenn able to keep up with only every 4th or 5th note. Randy kept up on bass tho ...

Randy Meisner played a pivotal role with his harmonies that made the Eagles so successful. Of course, he was a talented musician with his bass playing but his legendary harmonies put the Eagles on the map. Fil---you deserve credit for pointing out Randy's incredible vocal talent because most musical commentators have ignored Randy's brilliance and become focused on Don Henley and Glen Fry. Don and Glen deserve the accolades but it seems to have been at Randy's expense for he never get recognized for his musical brilliance.

..absolutely ..! It was Randy Meisner’s harmonies and Motown-inspired bass playing, and Bernie Leadon’s vocals and excellent instrumentation on many stringed instruments that gave Eagles their characteristic sound that set Eagles apart from the pack in an overcrowded country or country-rock world... whereas in the beginning Frey and Henley were unremarkable to start with (in fact Henley’s drum-playing was insensitive and often out of sync with the other band members .. check out the early videos to see Henley just smashing those drums .. especially the 1973 concerts in Voorburg)
So, without Randy and Bernie there would have been no Eagles ...

Here's a funny Randy Meisner story. Randy is a native of western Nebraska, and back in the mid 1970s, when I was still in high school there, the Eagles were the biggest band around, and he was something of a local legend. I mean, EVERYBODY knew about him. My mom worked at little main street department store back then. One night at dinner, mom asked me and my sister if we had ever heard of a band called "The Eagles". Well, DUH, mom! Who hasn't? Why ask such a weird question? Well, it seems a young guy came into the store, wearing an Eagles T-shirt, and mom being a nice, if somewhat ill-informed lady wished him good luck in his game, assuming the Eagles was the name of his school team. She said he looked at her oddly and said, no, he didn't play for any schools, and why would she assume that. She told him that she figured the Eagles was his team's name. She said he laughed pretty good at that told her that was just the name of a band he played with a little bit. Guess moms will never change! I actually met him once, and thought he was a heck of a nice guy. But, if you have ever spent any time in the American Midwest, that is pretty much the norm, friendly, honest, salt-of-the-Earth folks! Thanks again, Fil!

@@Miatacrosser This happened at the Ben Franklin Variety Store, in Mitchell, NE, a little town 10 miles west of Randy's home town of Scottsbluff, on U.S. Highway 26, which runs through the North Platte valley. I always assumed he was in town visiting relatives he has there. We lived 6 miles further west, in the even littler town of Morrill, and of course, Mitchell was our High School arch rivals. Every spring, the rumor would crop up that the Eagles were going to play for free at Mitchell's prom! Yeah, right! Randy's first band, The Dynamics, were still popular around there back then, and the closest any Meisner band ever got to Mitchell's prom would have been them, but I don't remember. Heck, I can't remember who played at MY prom...Probably The Dynamics!

I’m sure others have mentioned this, too, but I remember sitting in front of the family stereo with headphones on listening to this on the LP. I’d crank the volume near the end, as the song began to fade, to catch that really high note at end of the song. One of my first concert experiences was seeing the Eagle live at Forum in Los Angeles and among the many great moments of that show was watching Randy Meisner hit that note during the live performance.

Randy’s vocals was always the special sauce in the Eagles harmonies. His fade out vocals on “Take It To The Limit” must have been ultrasonic. After he left the band never sounded the same. Another of my favourites was his beautiful & melancholy “Most Of Us Are Sad” from their first album. Sadly his lead vocals weren’t given more songs in their repertoire. I never heard of Randy so since I had to find him singing that song- my favorite one by them- I just love his voice and sweet smile. It's too bad his partners helped his drug problems rather than help him. From what I pieced together I have come up with the idea that Randy's voice was as good or better than Glen's and Don' s and he was better looking so there must have been some jealousy going on. Then when he recorded with Heart and the record company wouldn't promote it , well, he got a raw deal. Such talent was wasted. Thanks for turning me on to him. Exactly! I myself was a casual Eagles fan and always loved Take it to the Limit but never realized Randy M was the one who sang it! So, I got back into them really recently & now I'm obsessed with their early music and in particular, Randy's contribution. I've downloaded all of his songs I can find and there's not a stinker among them, he was truly gifted. Many of them are sad and I think he struggled with his mental health (heard he was diagnosed bipolar later in life) as well as enablers who never gave him the true help he needed to quit substance abuse. He made his own choices but man, if seemed like he got the shaft many a time! Who knows what may have happened had he been invited back and not rebuffed for the Hell freezes over tour. What is really sad is that nobody stood up for Randy .. and they froze him out .. turning their backs on him during the shows, and not hanging out with him after the shows ... hell, IMHO they should have all punched out Glenn instead of punishing Randy for finally breaking and doing that. Henley and Frey (and Walsh) all knew he had it and he did deliver here, and you could tell they knew he would. He wasn't a bully... Watch Henley and Frey here. They know it. . He literally did it save for one moment which still worked out for the better... just misunderstandings.. sucks... because Meisner was better than he knew...

@@firewfire .. yes, he was an amazing singer and he is a wonderful person. Have you listened to Randy singing as a 16 year old, an 18 year old, a 21 year old ...? • @ingfig1

@@firewfire .. I gotta say I am not convinced that Randy was stage-shy from the start - he really rocks the lead vocals on his song Tryin’ (live performance 1973 .. .. th-cam.com/video/nuwdsiSg4uc/w-d-xo.html …a forerunner to Take It To The Limit, if you listen to the words). I think he lost his self-confidence once Bernie Leadon left, cuz then there was nobody to push back against Glenn’s domineering, and as Joe Walsh said, Randy is no alpha dog .. a sweet and humble, extremely talented person who loved to make music with a bunch of guys having fun, whether for a handful of people or huge crowds - “There’s nothing better!” (In an interview on John Beaudin’s YT channel Rock History Music).
IEdit: I want to amend what I wrote about Randy being stage-shy: I think that he was shy to speak on stage or to introduce a song, but when he was singing and playing bass he was in his element and his comfort zone - I just love his swagger in Tryin’.

His high harmonys with George Grantham and Rusty Young gave Poco that good time down home foot tappin sound that worked so good live. Their best early lp was Deliverin'. A live rocker with some great guitar work between Jimmy Messina and Rusty Young. But I'm glad Messina left Poco, cause that gave us Paul Cotton. Him and Rusty Young along with Timothy gave us the lp's Cantamos and Head Over Heals.

I had always thought of him as more of a singer/producer, my eyes got opened to his very good guitar playing! I was surprised, I shouldn't have been. Given his track record with POCO and Loggins/Messina. He also did a meet/greet WITHOUT asking for more money. That's the true mark of an ARTIST. He was a lot of fun and talked to us for a good while. If he comes locally to a venue, see him. He did POCO, Buffalo Springfield and some of his solo stuff. Great night.

Another "amazing range" song that Meisner did was on the Hotel California album titled "Try and love again". Unfortunately due to the likely knowledge that Randy Meisner was at least as much (if not more talented) vocally than Don or Glen, this song was never released as a single!!! I have no doubt that if it had been released it would have been an easy additional top ten single (if not a #1) from Hotel California. Several live versions seem to be back on TH-cam.
What I've noticed is that when Randy sung it with the Eagles live, it was a lot slower and more drawn out than when he sung it post-Eagles. That meant he had to hold those notes longer. Also, they seemed to repeat the end chorus one or two extra times before he'd have to hit that really high sustained note that would bring down the house. That Glenn and Don wanted it to duplicate the recorded version just added so much stress to it. There was no room to vary or improvise. No wonder Randy kept asking to take it off their concert rosters.
A year or two after the performance that Fil has used for his analysis, Randy started to perform it a semi-tone or tone lower. Glenn Frey had to perform it in a lower key than that and didn't attempt the high "Please"s near the end.
Here's the performance Fil used: th-cam.com/video/ArIuRcKjk5I/w-d-xo.html
