just a walkaround of my bike, 1982 yamaha maxim 400. also called an xs400, or an xj400 in europe. i may have those backwards, though. you'll have to take your chances.
I have this bike as well. Bought it as my starter bike and have since fallen in love with it. Had it repainted back to the original paint, and I am amazed at how many comments I get when I take it out . I had to lower it and then still cut about 1.5-2" of foam off the seat in order for me to touch flat footed on the ground. I bought a second one for parts and we decided to make a Bobber out of it (currently in progress!!) Super excited for the Maxims...not many left.
I own this same bike but i have a belt instead of a chain. Its a real fixer upper, anyone know where to get parts? in dire need! im stuck driving a car till i fix it up.
Nice bike. I have one just like it. Trying to get it running right just now though. Rusty tank, bad carbs, damned clutch cable came out of housing. Wouldn't be so bad if the bolts weren't seized. Got to ask, where are those highway pegs bolted on? Custom job? I got to get some for mine. Not too comfy after an hour or so.

You drive it on the highway? I was always scared to drive mine on the highway cause it revs so high at 110 km/h
