It brakes very quickly, probably because it's so light.
It may not be the best 250cc bike (Ninja 250) but it is the one you won't "outgrow" the fastest. I own the current version and people compliment me on it a lot. Compared to the Honda and Suzuki 250 cruisers, which look like beginner bikes to both riders and non-riders. The XV250 isn't particularly fast, but it'll keep up with traffic on anything short of the Autobahn, even if it is doing a high RPM to get there. Also helps that it is reliable as a hammer. Parts are plentiful both for repair when necessary and customization. Its a good bike, and I am happy with owning one.

@@arnoldo9319 bought a virago 1100 and no regrets! tried the 535 but its way too small. Try out 750 and 1100 which should fit better for you. Only difference between these two are the engine size. Wish you filmed mostly the Cypress road. The rest of Vancouver is not at all good riding . I just got a 1995 Verago. Can't wait to take it up Cypress and Seymour and the low road to Horseshoe Bay.
Very nice video, much enjoyable to say the least. I'm going to take exams for my license soon and I was thinking of buying a Virago 250 as a beginner bike. But I want to commute to work everyday and Idk if it would be a good idea to have only a bike to commute when there's raining. I want this bike but the weather has me so split, I can't decide. It's driving me insane.
@everyday tenor Well ice and snow don't scare me because I *NEVER* go out with conditions like these. You should avoid that bro, it's a recipe for disaster (if you're doing it).
Absolutely love my 1997 Yamaha virago limited edition, but I have a lot of fear right now which I am trying to get over, unfortunately, I live with CPTSD which gets violently triggered everytime I get scared witless. So I am looking for someone to ride her, while I hold onto the back to get used to her on Auckland New Zealand roads.
I saw that little V Twin a the Yamaha dealer yesterday. It is a mixture of cute and cool. I am so big and heavy, 0-60 would probably take 12 seconds, so a I probably won’t buy it, but is really neat!
A Cruiser is in a completely different class than a sports bike. Thought I would point that out. You were over revving it big time. A sports bike engine is designed to rev to 14k rpm a cruiser engine maybe 8k rpm. No comparison other than it has 2 wheels. I like the nimbleness of this bike.
I'm six foot tall and 200lb. I don't have any credit and it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get any. Point being I can't finance a bike. Anything I get will be paid for with cash flat out. I have found a 2007 model Yamaha Virago 250 practically brand-new condition 500 original miles all paperwork clean title. I have recently got back into motorcycles after a long hiatus. I have a Kawasaki KLX 300 late 90s model in excellent condition that has scratched the off-road itch. Now I want something to ride on the road. It would just be something I played around on on the weekends, and I may drive it to work occasionally which would mean a 20 minute ride on the interstate. Like I said anything i get is going to have to be paid for in cash and I have found a good deal on one is it too small a bike for me? It's going to take me a long time before I find something in his nice and shape that is bigger. Should I indeed save my money up and wait for something else to come along?
These XVS or Virago bikes are not about speed,.. Yes, they will get to 80mph, but take quite some time to get there, but the V-Twin engines sound and look superb and are extremely reliable.. typical Yamaha engines.. This bike is all about the cool looks and comfort.. And in the looks and comfort department Yamaha are hands down winners with this bike..
Thank you , Haven;t had a bike since 1987 and that was a goldwing , Would the older ones be as good as this bike , An older 250 honda rebel would they be only 13 horsepower
I don't think anyone should start on a small bike. I started on a kz750 and loved it. Perfect starting point and could keep it forever. But now I want a small 250, actually this virago. Out of all the 250s I think the vstar 250 is the best. I just want something cheap for around town
I just bought a 2016 Yamaha 250 after riding as a first bike a Honda Grom for 5,000 K in 3 months. Now I just got it today and have just sat on it and I found it a real heavy bike compared to the Honda grom. Just to get it off the kickstand one has to use a lot of muscle power. My Honda Grom has a top speed of 92K and from what I read on reviews the Yamaha does about 100K per as top speed so not much faster than a Grom
Top speed for these is around 75 mph. The V Star full of fuel weighs 100 pounds more than a Grom. It has more than double the horsepower. The larger wheels and longer wheelbase will give it a smoother ride.
@@MrMoneyHelper Thanks for that info and 75 MPH is as much as I would need as I only ride 50 MPH highways up here in Canada. I assume it is too light to go on the 4 lane highways due to wind blow backs from the big trucks. I have not yet rode it or put the plates on it. Will do that next May. I just dumped the Honda Grom the other day. I took off from a stop sign making a right had turn and I stalled the engine and down I went. I think I took off in second gear and that is why the stall.
@@erwinerwin1245 Lighter motorcycles can be affected by wind more than heavy ones; but that doesn't mean you can't ride on highways. Just learn to deal with it. Get more riding experience and you will make better decisions. Watch videos about new rider mistakes. Then avoid them.

They've made a Yamaha Virago XV 535, a personal favorite, of the Virago's. It produces just shy of 40 horsepower, enough to get you to 160 km/h. But like bchizzle says, they've also done a 750... and a 1100 (which I believe produces around 60 horsepower.) What I like about the Virago's (except the 250), is that they are shaft-driven. So very little maintenance, no lubricating the chain and no adjusting. It also makes it a bit more suited for "all year, all weather" riding.
You overrevved this thing SOOO much. I'm glad the engine didn't explode. You might have blown a seal somewhere. Shift at the torque peak for smooth shifts. Shifting at horsepower peak is ideal for racing. One knows that the HP peak has been reached when the rate of acceleration peaks. The second the rate of acceleration is different, you have passed the HP peak. Once one has felt this difference, it will be easier to know to shift at that point instead of passing it.
Best 250cc cruiser in looks? Janus Halcyon 250. 2nd place Cleveland Cyclewerks Tha Heist. #rd a tie between the Verox and Hyosung GV250. The Yamaha XV250 would be 4th, but it is the best looking 250 cruiser that is also a joy to own. The others mentioned have either poor dealership networks or none at all, at least here in the US.
Are these auto or manual and may of missed it but how much power does it make and one more thing sorry I’m new but is power a big deal in motorcycles like it is in cars or what
hi,... just watched your video, thanks for doing that!... my 2000 virago 250 mixture adjust screw was adjusted all the way in (lean)... with no change in idle or running status, any ideas why this is happening? thanks,... It seems to be running fine, just smells like its running rich...
I've never road before going to do my cbt. What lisance do i need for a 125cc and a 250cc bike and can you pick what lisance you want to get for the size engine you want. Or do you have to do all the steps
Hey man I think you'll really have to try it out, being 6ft the bike is gonna be fairly small. I'm about 5"8.5 if that gives you an idea on how I stack up on this thing. There was someone down here in the comments who is over 6ft and rode one.
I'm also 6"1" and ride a Virago 1100. Even this engine size is great for a beginner as long as you don't get crazy with the throttle. Seating is however a bit cramped.
To me a 250 is plenty for general use, especially just you, without a passenger. A 400 or 600 is "big" to me, more than enough power for the road and will easily leave even the average supercar. Of course if you want to start racing other motorcycles then there's no limit to just how powerful and stupid you can get, but for just you, the road and going places a 250 is plenty. In Asia this is considered a big bike, as many commute with 80 to 150cc.
My brother basically gave me his and im a solid 270 pounds and i feel it struggles my fat ass around, i dont even have a motorcycle license yet i just use it for clowning around my small town 😂 definitely need to get 1 tho before the law catches me 😅
no its a great bike i like mine . I highly advise against a windscreen on a 300 pound bike when you have 50-65mph winds hitting the screen it feels as if your not in complete control of the bike ( when the wind changes direction you get a wobble from how hard the wind is pushing against your bars ) so i took mine off ,but it cruising conditions and it starts to rain the screen is amazing , in my state windscreen on the bike is not needed if you have a full face helmet so as stated i removed mine from the bike
Looking for a 250 and this seems about perfect. Does anyone know if the Chinese "Lifan" bike is a copy of the Virago or what other brand ?? Lifan looks great, just like the Virago does, but why , why why would anyone not just get a used major brand 250 instead ???
I have a Chinese XV250 clone, assembled here in Argentina. It's the same motorcycle, Lifan made the virago 250 engines for a long time, I have it since 2013 and never had an issue, maybe the little things that fall apart like rubber covers that wear down in any type of motorcycle and things of the sort. The thing with "chinese steel" is that it's not very forgiving, so you don't want to be riding it without proper maintenance. If you could afford a Yamaha, even better, because it's japanese steel, it's more forgiving.
I'm looking to get into bikes & the Virago 250 or 650 are my top picks because i like how they look bobbed out. But can anyone tell me why the used 250's i see are so close in price to the 650's? Maybe i got spoiled from previously looking at cheap GS500s, but why are older Virago 250's still around $2.5k to $3k USD?
duane willis I think it's because of the demand from beginners that the 250 retains its value really well. There's always demand for a smaller bike to start out on.
bchizzle Ahhh, the GS500 was recommended to me as a good starter bike too, but they seem much cheaper than 250cc Virago/V Stars. But maybe you're right & people just target the lower cc bikes for beginners, allowing it to retain value. Our maybe the Virago/v star just looks better & therefore more popular? I don't know.
I'm 290 pounds and 6 feet 3. I found one for sale. I wanted to get your input on it. do you think it will fit me? Or is it too small? not looking for speed just a beginner bike to commute with. Hope to hear back with some input.
+Oscar Yerena if you're over 6ft it's gonna feel pretty small. I suggest trying to sit on it and see what you think. I'm 5 8.5" and it feels pretty compact for me already!

Small virago like this would have been my first choice but im 190cm (or about 6ft 3) so I will probably need a bigger one. Going to try sitting on a 750 soon and looking forward seeing what it feels! The video was great, subbed your channel!
Well what did you end up with? Im 190cm too and im thinking of getting a 250 virago. My height does concern me a bit.
@@arnoldo9319 bought a virago 1100 and no regrets! tried the 535 but its way too small. Try out 750 and 1100 which should fit better for you. Only difference between these two are the engine size. In custom bikes I dont see the bigger engine size making it any harder so I can recommend virago 750 or 1100 even as first bike
@@RandomJoole ok thanks for the tips and the quick answer mate!!
That clutch is done after this ride. 😁
Wish you filmed mostly the Cypress road. The rest of Vancouver is not at all good riding . I just got a 1995 Verago. Can't wait to take it up Cypress and Seymour and the low road to Horseshoe Bay.
Love seeing Vancouver and your review was great as well. Keep it up bud!
joshatronify Thanks! It's lovely. Can't wait until the new season and there's less rain :)
Nice video. Good length. Proper footage. Thanks
slip the clutch some more why don't you!
@everyday tenor Ice is definitely a problem but rain is dangerous too.
Brisingrize haha another kiwi. Im down Wellington way
I saw that little V Twin a the Yamaha dealer yesterday. It is a mixture of cute and cool. I am so big and heavy, 0-60 would probably take 12 seconds, so a I probably won’t buy it, but is really neat!
Try a 750. 👌🏻
The Yamaha XVS650 is the best beginner cruiser....The Virago is nice though.
My first motorcycle, and i love it
6:55 bit of clutch slippage there
I'm thinking it's the rider not letting the clutch out all the way between shifts.
@@451dskots88 Clearly he isn't experienced.
@@MrMoneyHelper
Yeah he did it the entire video, he loves to squeeze thst clutch too much
Was the clutch REALLY slipping that bad , or were you just afraid to let go of the lever ??
I own a 2014 model and I love it.
Same bike as the Lifan Royal. Great bike .
Cool did they clone the Virago 250 for that bike?
bchizzle dafra did this with the kansas 250
How tall are you brother????
Thank you , Haven;t had a bike since 1987 and that was a goldwing , Would the older ones be as good as this bike , An older 250 honda rebel would they be only 13 horsepower
Very nice review! And nice to see a familiar city ;)
Just bought a 2002 xv250 r great bike 1824 klms on clock
I don't think anyone should start on a small bike. I started on a kz750 and loved it. Perfect starting point and could keep it forever. But now I want a small 250, actually this virago. Out of all the 250s I think the vstar 250 is the best. I just want something cheap for around town
Its more fun to upgrade in power over the years than starting with great power
That bike would look even better with a boattail.
@@MrMoneyHelper Thanks for all of your info and I have been watching a lot of motorcycle videos and learning a lot from them.
What i have heard that heavy big motorcycles are easier to control going straight down the highway but way more difficult in slow speed riding than a light bike.
I have a 250 Virago 1990. It has 60,000 km on it .. these things are great bikes very little maintenance pretty much bullet proof. Daily summer commuter. Cheap insurance and gas.
I have one im rebuilding and its a lovely bike to ride
the only thing I didn't like about the bike is that you powershifted it, cruisers ARENT MEANT FOR THAT SHIT BRO!
otherwise love the bike. gonna pick up one and do a big bore kit and a turbocharger (make it unique) and save up for a bmw s1000rr
HI have been a pillion for close to 30 years riding with friends and have finally decided I am sick of being a pillion and waiting for others to go on rides and want to get my own. I have health issues so am not very strong, am only 5ft 1 so need something lightweight but want to cruise. A dealer said this bike would suit me. What do you think?
Trish Harris. I recommend the v star 250 for your height and it’s very light . But if I was you and you wanted to ride longer , and get better mpg I’d say cbr250r .. I live in tx and I’ve ridden a cbr250 from ft worth to Austin which is 3 hours btw ...the bike got me around 260 miles till fill up ...
@@retrocaveman1062 Thanks.. I went and sat on one a couple of days ago, also compared it to the Suzuki S40.. Loved the Virago. It felt so comfortable and easy for me to handle. Doing a 2 day course starting tomorrow on one, to see how I go.
That's 249cc engine. Can you ride one in highway in BC?
Nice vid how tall are you ?
why this moto is quite cheap ?! it looks fantastic are they reliable ? Thank you
These Yamaha Virago bikes are not about speed,.. Yes, they will get to 80mph, but take quite some time to get there, but the V-Twin engines sound and look superb and are extremely reliable.. typical Yamaha engines.. Bulletproof engines.. A friend has one with 44,000 miles on and never misses a beat or uses oil.. This bike is all about the cool looks and comfort.. And reliability..!
subbed. i like your reviews
Gold3n GM thanks! I hope to do more when the season starts :)
Looking for buying a Yamaha Virago 535. Are 30.000 Kilometers okay for a used one?
Good video bro thanks
I just bought this type of bike today
They say at high speed it's handlebar trembles and you will feel it in your arms.. iS it true?
Seems like if you just double the cc to 500 you'd have the perfect all around bike. enough power for the hwy, but the nibbleness for a city.
Shakeem Pierresaint I'd agree. I liked the virago 750. It was about 50hp. Could keep up with traffic and then highway would cruiser perfectly!
They've made a Yamaha Virago XV 535, a personal favorite, of the Virago's. It produces just shy of 40 horsepower, enough to get you to 160 km/h.
But like bchizzle says, they've also done a 750... and a 1100 (which I believe produces around 60 horsepower.)
What I like about the Virago's (except the 250), is that they are shaft-driven.
Does it overheat in the city? I mean is a 535 good for a daily use in city? Going to college or something?
Everyone has an opinion on what kind of bike they like. I believe the Kymco Verox is the best looking 250 cruiser
Probably a little late to help, but the tip of the mixture screw may have broken off.
indicator lights need to be on bar higher up near grip on all bikes...
Worry about you lookin at them, not them lookin atvyou
Nice im planning to ride a motorcycle
Can you cancel signalling by middle clicking the signal control on this older model?
I've never road before going to do my cbt. What lisance do i need for a 125cc and a 250cc bike and can you pick what lisance you want to get for the size engine you want. Or do you have to do all the steps
In US you have to have a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license, cc wise it doesn’t matter.
Is this bike good for me if I'm 6'1?I was thinking about the 535 also.Which one is better for a beginner?
Hey man I think you'll really have to try it out, being 6ft the bike is gonna be fairly small. I'm about 5"8.5 if that gives you an idea on how I stack up on this thing. There was someone down here in the comments who is over 6ft and rode one.
I'm also 6"1" and ride a Virago 1100. Even this engine size is great for a beginner as long as you don't get crazy with the throttle. Seating is however a bit cramped.
are these bikes ok to make into a smaller chopper?
To me a 250 is plenty for general use, especially just you, without a passenger. A 400 or 600 is "big" to me, more than enough power for the road and will easily leave even the average supercar. Of course if you want to start racing other motorcycles then there's no limit to just how powerful and stupid you can get, but for just you, the road and going places a 250 is plenty. In Asia this is considered a big bike, as many commute with 80 to 150cc.
My brother basically gave me his and im a solid 270 pounds and i feel it struggles my fat ass around, i dont even have a motorcycle license yet i just use it for clowning around my small town 😂 definitely need to get 1 tho before the law catches me 😅
Did you get legal? Are you still alive? ;-)
Dude. You have inspired me to buy one of these LOL
i have an 08 and it came with a windscreen on it made highway ridding terrible from the increased wind wobble
john marston I should tell my buddy not to get it then. Yikes
no its a great bike i like mine . I highly advise against a windscreen on a 300 pound bike when you have 50-65mph winds hitting the screen it feels as if your not in complete control of the bike ( when the wind changes direction you get a wobble from how hard the wind is pushing against your bars ) so i took mine off ,but it cruising conditions and it starts to rain the screen is amazing , in my state windscreen on the bike is not needed if you have a full face helmet so as stated i removed mine from the bike
also i tend to remove it as soon as i put it on due to weather changes and its never fun to have to work right before play
I’m 6 foot 6 inch and 205 pounds... I make it work, it’s a fun bike. Don’t keep the stock seat, get something that can allow you to sit back a few inches and you’ll be good.
