Shout out to the company that constructed that strong brick building. Most modern structures would’ve collapsed the second weekend of tenants using that illegal rooftop pool. I admire the initiative.....but at 60 tons, that roof was never designed for that. A lot of people could've died. As it is there will have to be an inspection conducted before all the snow starts falling so there isn't a news report over the winter that this roof caved in from all the snow.....
This could have potentially been a nightmare on epic proportions. As a structural engineer, the ONLY reason that rooftop did not collapse was because the 60T of water was equally distributed over a large portion of the roof. This was VERY stupid..

I saw 4 people go into oncoming traffic to cut people off in the span of about 10 minutes in bumper to bumper traffic. I won't drive here at all. We dump millions of gallons water into the gutters of this city every day. Because people run hydrants all day for no reason. While some parts of the country have droughts. Putting other people at risk is our way of life.

I used to think the same thing, I remember going on a cruise and the swimming pool was tiny. I was hanging out on deck at like 3 am with an off duty crew member who explained to me the weight of the water in the pool (as well as the rest of the water on the ship for toilets/showers/drinking) not only add up to a ton of weight, but if the pool is too wide/long/deep, it could actually affect the balance of the entire ship. Its just one of those things that don't seem like an issue, but once someone informs you of it, you kinda feel dumb about how understandable it is.

It’s an intex pool you can purchase them at target they are great for backyards … I think the tenants put it up maybe the super was away for a day because that’s all it takes to put one of these up and a good TH-cam tutorial

I highly doubt that would have collapsed, it looked partially suspended, and less than half full it’s probably around 15,000 pounds. Those air conditioner units that stand on legs, each leg is putting a force equal to something like 100,000 pounds per square inch. Someone is just mad they didn’t get their payment for a public pool being built.

Take note the city only discovered it after it was already full and not before, meaning the roof could have easily collapsed LONG before anyone in authority knew what was going on, these building's tenants were just really lucky it didn't collapse the moment all 60 tons was filled for the first time.
It's not the city's responsibility to prevent such things. It's their responsibility to enforce building codes. What you wrote would be like if the responsibility of the police was to prevent crime. They can't do that unfortunately.
Theres not enough detail in this story that tell us how it was discovered and it is doubtful that building inspectors and code enforcement are flying around in helicopters on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis checking out the rooftops. They don't even do that on foot. Most of them just scour google earth or wait for a complaint. That being said a pool like that can be assembled and ready for water in about 30 minutes or less by 2 or 3 people. It would have taken 2 or 3 days to fill that with a garden hose. So essentially it's pretty easy to put that pool up under the nose of inspectors, code enforcement, and the landlord.

@@onlyh8720 Interesting theory, but it's likely it was there for quite awhile simply based on the fact that it takes a LONG time to just fill a pool that size - it takes many days. Considering how low the water pressure at the top floor of most buildings are a low pressure hose would take upwards of a week at minimum to fill a pool that big. And the fact the pool was already full means it was even longer than that.
People are so stupid sometimes. You must always think through what you are doing and the issues it may cause. This situation could have turned deadly. I am glad they found it and acted to correct it.

Surfside collapsed like a deck of cards from the all the structures giving out. They were built like shit. Last time we saw buildings fall like that, it was a New York City controlled demolition in 2001.

Everyone assumes it was the landlord. Tenants have been known to do crap like this without permission. How often do landlords check the roof. Maybe it the landlord who discovered it. As a landlord, I find it hard to believe the property owner would do such a thing. Then again, there are dumb people out there. I think there’s a greater percentage that the landlord wasn’t involved in this. My advice to all landlords is to put up outdoor cameras surrounding property and common areas like laundry room, storage room, roof, etc. it’s to protect yourself and your tenants. This illegal pool could’ve ended badly. Thank God it was discovered
My ex husband got our old house after the divorce. He remarried, they moved out and he rented the house out a few years. He was told by the neighbors after one of the tenants moved, that they'd set up a pool in the living room. The house is about 175 years old. Probably should be on a historic register. Tenants are a-holes.
This is the most dangerous thing to do on a rooftop. I design heavy equipment installations on rooftops, we have to run structural calculations to determine if the load is safe. I can guarantee you that was faaaaaar too heavy just at first sight.

When I bought my house the tenants left a filled waterbed on the first floor. The house was built in 1926. Eventually I found two split floor joists in the basement, ... right where the waterbed sat.

However, there were plenty of stories of people whose 2cnd floor fishtank would crash into the first floor below, especially in the older houses. 60 tons of water seems a bit risky to me.

There's a ferry for about $3 leaving brooklyn almost every hour to 10 miles of beaches at Far Rockaway. Its air conditioned and has a bar. Then you have miles of good beaches. Maybe consider that instead.....
Exactly! We have the same pool. It comes in a box. The frame is metal that snaps together and the liner is rolled up. It can be easily carried up by a couple of people.

Years ago I rented places that did not allow waterbeds. This rooftop pool was like having 75 waterbeds on the roof. Add a bunch of swimmers and you have a severely overloaded roof.

Wet snow loads weigh about 30lbs per cubic foot 24" to 29" snows seems to be the deepest snows NYC has ever experienced. So x2 = 60lbs per cubic ft, on the entire roof. (It used to be figured at three times this weight for freak weather occurrences, and sometimes taller expansions of buildings). Water in a cubic foot weighs 62.3lbs on a partial span of the roof x 4 = 250lbs per cubic foot. It's quite possible that the roof could collapse, but not probable. However water sloshes and snow is static, and that can make all the difference.

On the other side a snowfall would have an equal division on the whole roof area whereas the pool keeps all the wheight concentrated on a much smaller portion of the roof, making the constraints way more hazardous imo

I'm amazed that so many comments related to structural strength. Rarely do that many people mention the technical dangers of a situation. It is likely the roof got designed for a sustained load of ice and snow, with the safety multiple. Depending on age, the structure may have been designed to allow for a rooftop fire tank, something sometimes done before the 1920's. It is possible that the pool installer did think all of that through. I remain a bit surprised that the heavy water bill, during the first filling, caught no attention.

You'll be surprised how big of a pool you can make with that amount of materials. It took me 3 weekends to lug the materials up 12 flights of stairs and connect it to the city water supply. I mean I saw it happen, forget what I said.
Me and my girlfriend rented an apartment in the 1980s, where we had the roof tops of several businesses outside & below our suite that we used during the summer months. We were thoughtful about what we did outside,...we had plastic, outdoor furniture, and a table, all light weight furniture. We had a great garden that made up of about 10 , 10 gallon buckets, with tomato plants, and other vegetables,....everything was set up close to the outer edges, of the roof, so not a lot of concentrated weight, in the middle. We also bought a plastic kiddie pool,....only large enough for one person at a time. Our landlord had no idea we used the surrounding roofs, for an outdoor living space. The suite had a door that exited to those roofs, so it had to have been used by others before us. The roof was sound, with a thick asphalt coating. No other apartments looked out over that space, and it couldn't be seen from the ground. It was great.
Are you serious? If a building was built without any roof top garden or pool then it means to say it was not designed and engineered to take all that weight. Putting everything at the edge is right for those are the strongest points of any building. I am a mechanical engineer by trade and I have worked with civil engineers before my retirement. Our motto is to design everything to be 7 to 8 times stronger than what is required and with a lot of redundancies. I know it is expensive but all the buildings that we have built since the 1950s that exceeds all standards specifications by being 7 to 8 times stronger than what is required and has added improvement-safety features ARE ALL STILL STA.NDING AND ARE STILL IN PRISTINE CONDITIONS! Sometimes people who were invited as guests by the condominium apartment unit owners are wondering when it was really built because everything was look so NEW! And we made sure it is maintenance -free, trouble-free, and repair-free but all areas are easily accessible if repairs are necessary because of some foolish accidents done at the parking lot below that building. But we put a lot of buffer zone barriers against any kind of foolishness being done by reckless teenagers or ignorant adults. Like the old saying, people change.
You are under the mistaken impression that the roof was sound, all that is holding that asphalt up is a 1 inch sheet board with asphalt and a membrane. If it was not build to support stuff and did not get builded to code then you should not be putting things on it. Especially a pool and have bbq and people there.

These were sturdy old buildings built in 1910. We weren't out there every day all day long, plus something like plastic paint buckets, each weighing about 20 pounds each spread out, close to where they had the most support, hardly would have done much damage. If this was a hazard, how can it support rather large air conditioning units, that were also up there. We did live there for 10 years. A small kiddie pool with a 6 foot diameter, filled with water for periods of time, but not all the time, ( we drained them after use, so they didn't collect debris) again,....not that stressful to the roof & underlying structure.

A gallon of water weighs about 8 lbs. That’s a pretty big pool. 60 tons is probably a conservative estimate. Add in 20 or 30 people jumping around in there and it’s a damn miracle that roof didn’t collapse.
I've wondered about squeezing this type of pool into my basement. The concrete floor poured on dirt s/b strong enough to hold it, I think, though it may form a stress crack somewhere. There's a drain that should be big enough to accept the water I'd need to siphon out for cleaning purposes. But I'm not sure a cover would contain enough humidity.... I've wondered if having the pool enclosed in a plastic tent with its own inflow fan & an exhaust fan piped outside would allow enough air circulation to prevent mold from growing in the house. I wonder if I'd need a humidifier, too, orif that'd still be too little to combat the humidity.
If I had a basement, I would be putting a reasonably sized one down here. But I would add a heat exchanger fan to bring in filtered fresh air from outside and a dehumidifier. Although a cover would go a long way to reducing evaporation.
Dehumidifier. But your idea seems sound. With enough ventilation or a dehumidifier, and a cover, you might be fine. But if I was you, I'd contact a few different contractors and ask their engineers for advice. If you don't mind cracks in your basement floor then you might be okay, it's typically gravel and clay/rock under it all. Don't do this in a multi-suite unit, even a duplex, without asking and approval.

Take note the city only discovered it after it was already full and not before, meaning the roof could have easily collapsed LONG before anyone in authority knew what was going on, these building's tenants were just really lucky it didn't collapse the moment all 60 tons was filled for the first time.
It's not the city's responsibility to prevent such things. It's their responsibility to enforce building codes. What you wrote would be like if the responsibility of the police was to prevent crime. They can't do that unfortunately.

Theres not enough detail in this story that tell us how it was discovered and it is doubtful that building inspectors and code enforcement are flying around in helicopters on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis checking out the rooftops. They don't even do that on foot. Most of them just scour google earth or wait for a complaint. That being said a pool like that can be assembled and ready for water in about 30 minutes or less by 2 or 3 people. It would have taken 2 or 3 days to fill that with a garden hose. So essentially it's pretty easy to put that pool up under the nose of inspectors, code enforcement, and the landlord.

@@onlyh8720 Interesting theory, but it's likely it was there for quite awhile simply based on the fact that it takes a LONG time to just fill a pool that size - it takes many days. Considering how low the water pressure at the top floor of most buildings are a low pressure hose would take upwards of a week at minimum to fill a pool that big. And the fact the pool was already full means it was even longer than that.
People are so stupid sometimes. You must always think through what you are doing and the issues it may cause. This situation could have turned deadly. I am glad they found it and acted to correct it.

Everyone assumes it was the landlord. Tenants have been known to do crap like this without permission. How often do landlords check the roof. Maybe it the landlord who discovered it. As a landlord, I find it hard to believe the property owner would do such a thing. Then again, there are dumb people out there. I think there’s a greater percentage that the landlord wasn’t involved in this. My advice to all landlords is to put up outdoor cameras surrounding property and common areas like laundry room, storage room, roof, etc. it’s to protect yourself and your tenants. This illegal pool could’ve ended badly. Thank God it was discovered

My ex husband got our old house after the divorce. He remarried, they moved out and he rented the house out a few years. He was told by the neighbors after one of the tenants moved, that they'd set up a pool in the living room.

This is the most dangerous thing to do on a rooftop. I design heavy equipment installations on rooftops, we have to run structural calculations to determine if the load is safe. I can guarantee you that was faaaaaar too heavy just at first sight.

@TOPgamesTV Back in the 80's I had a 100-gallon ( approx 820 lbs + gravel ) aquarium in my apartment. I was on the ground floor with concrete slab flooring so I never had any problems. However, there were plenty of stories of people whose 2cnd floor fishtank would crash into the first floor below, especially in the older houses. 60 tons of water seems a bit risky to me.

Comes in a box but it's still pretty cumbersome to get it to the roof. Most of these types of NYC buildings don't have an elevator that goes to the roof but only narrow stairs.

Years ago I rented places that did not allow waterbeds. This rooftop pool was like having 75 waterbeds on the roof. Add a bunch of swimmers and you have a severely overloaded roof.

So x2 = 60lbs per cubic ft, on the entire roof. (It used to be figured at three times this weight for freak weather occurrences, and sometimes taller expansions of buildings).
Water in a cubic foot weighs 62.3lbs on a partial span of the roof x 4 = 250lbs per cubic foot.
It's quite possible that the roof could collapse, but not probable.
However water sloshes and snow is static, and that can make all the difference.
Not to mention instead of the weight being spread out it is localized in that certain area.

I'm amazed that so many comments related to structural strength. Rarely do that many people mention the technical dangers of a situation. It is likely the roof got designed for a sustained load of ice and snow, with the safety multiple. Depending on age, the structure may have been designed to allow for a rooftop fire tank, something sometimes done before the 1920's. It is possible that the pool installer did think all of that through. I remain a bit surprised that the heavy water bill, during the first filling, caught no attention.

You'll be surprised how big of a pool you can make with that amount of materials. It took me 3 weekends to lug the materials up 12 flights of stairs and connect it to the city water supply. I mean I saw it happen, forget what I said.

Me and my girlfriend rented an apartment in the 1980s, where we had the roof tops of several businesses outside & below our suite that we used during the summer months. We were thoughtful about what we did outside,...we had plastic, outdoor furniture, and a table, all light weight furniture. We had a great garden that made up of about 10 , 10 gallon buckets, with tomato plants, and other vegetables,....everything was set up close to the outer edges, of the roof, so not a lot of concentrated weight, in the middle. We also bought a plastic kiddie pool,....only large enough for one person at a time. Our landlord had no idea we used the surrounding roofs, for an outdoor living space. The suite had a door that exited to those roofs, so it had to have been used by others before us. The roof was sound, with a thick asphalt coating. No other apartments looked out over that space, and it couldn't be seen from the ground. It was great.
Are you serious? If a building was built without any roof top garden or pool then it means to say it was not designed and engineered to take all that weight. Putting everything at the edge is right for those are the strongest points of any building. I am a mechanical engineer by trade and I have worked with civil engineers before my retirement. Our motto is to design everything to be 7 to 8 times stronger than what is required and with a lot of redundancies. I know it is expensive but all the buildings that we have built since the 1950s that exceeds all standards specifications by being 7 to 8 times stronger than what is required and has added improvement-safety features ARE ALL STILL STA.NDING AND ARE STILL IN PRISTINE CONDITIONS! Sometimes people who were invited as guests by the condominium apartment unit owners are wondering when it was really built because everything was look so NEW! And we made sure it is maintenance -free, trouble-free, and repair-free but all areas are easily accessible if repairs are necessary because of some foolish accidents done at the parking lot below that building. But we put a lot of buffer zone barriers against any kind of foolishness being done by reckless teenagers or ignorant adults. Like the old saying, people change.

You are under the mistaken impression that the roof was sound, all that is holding that asphalt up is a 1 inch sheet board with asphalt and a membrane. If it was not build to support stuff and did not get builded to code then you should not be putting things on it. Especially a pool and have bbq and people there.

@@annhans3535 I am sure you are right, but it does have to hold up tons of snow weight, sometimes ups to 2 feet of snow, over the whole surface. Sometimes for a whole month. These were sturdy old buildings built in 1910. We weren't out there every day all day long, plus something like plastic paint buckets, each weighing about 20 pounds each spread out, close to where they had the most support, hardly would have done much damage. If this was a hazard, how can it support rather large air conditioning units, that were also up there. We did live there for 10 years. A small kiddie pool with a 6 foot diameter, filled with water for periods of time, but not all the time, ( we drained them after use, so they didn't collect debris) again,....not that stressful to the roof & underlying structure.

A gallon of water weighs about 8 lbs. That’s a pretty big pool. 60 tons is probably a conservative estimate. Add in 20 or 30 people jumping around in there and it’s a damn miracle that roof didn’t collapse.

I've wondered about squeezing this type of pool into my basement. The concrete floor poured on dirt s/b strong enough to hold it, I think, though it may form a stress crack somewhere. There's a drain that should be big enough to accept the water I'd need to siphon out for cleaning purposes. But I'm not sure a cover would contain enough humidity.... I've wondered if having the pool enclosed in a plastic tent with its own inflow fan & an exhaust fan piped outside would allow enough air circulation to prevent mold from growing in the house. I wonder if I'd need a humidifier, too, orif that'd still be too little to combat the humidity.
If I had a basement, I would be putting a reasonably sized one down here. But I would add a heat exchanger fan to bring in filtered fresh air from outside and a dehumidifier. Although a cover would go a long way to reducing evaporation.

Dehumidifier. But your idea seems sound. With enough ventilation or a dehumidifier, and a cover, you might be fine. But if I was you, I'd contact a few different contractors and ask their engineers for advice. If you don't mind cracks in your basement floor then you might be okay, it's typically gravel and clay/rock under it all. Don't do this in a multi-suite unit, even a duplex, without asking and approval.
