    What does it mean if theres little gold flakes in the nitric acid scratch test???

  • @rawdawgpendants5490
    @rawdawgpendants5490 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would it be bad to melt it all down together? Im mean not to deplate it but if it were solid gold could you just smelt them all together, flux it and get pure gold?

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could. But refining is all about classification and concentration of values

  • @pneumatic00
    @pneumatic00 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will ask the following question. Obviously, this is pretty tedious. But before you began classifying these little scraps, I assume you weighed them, all of them together. And let's say you had 25 grams all told, before classifying. Since there will undoubtedly be a karat gold refining in your future where you will have a good weight of karat scrap, would it be that big a deal to just assume that ALL those snippets are 12-13K and dump all of them into your batch of karat scrap (that you do the acid test on) at LEAST 250 grams (10 times as much) and proceed with inquarting normally?

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, that is an option. But I’d rather be precise. It’s the perfectionist in me. It satisfies my ocd and it appeals to my meticulous nature.

    Helpful video. I had been testing some scrap stuff and came across some of the issues that you covered here in this video. It would have been helpful then, but makes for a good reference now. Question - let's say one of those small steel springs slipped through and made it into the refining process. Would the nitric dissolve it or would it have to get filtered out of the batch?

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s happened. The steel spring has such a high melting point that it usually floats to the top of the molten inquarted gold and stays in the melt dish as the inquarted gold is poured off. If it gets in the nitric boils it usually survives. I’ve seen them get filtered out after dissolving the gold in aqua regia.

      Sounds like gold filled. Dip the piece tested, directly into the acid, at the exact place on the piece where you scratched it on the stone. If it bubbles, turns green or any other color, and stinks to high heaven, then you’ll know it’s not solid karat gold.

      You would end up using more reagents and spend more time separating all of the other base metals from the gold, silver & Pt metals. Also it may be difficult to call your final pour 999 Au.
      It can be observed that streetips uses precise calculations for gold, copper or silver inquartation to minimize the time and effort of separation.

Get there two hours early to be first in line (or else all the gold gets snapped up ahead of you) learn to spot fake stuff and exclude it. Experience is vital. There’s no substitute for experience. I bought $5k worth of gold today for 80% so I made a thousand bucks. And the sellers were thanking me profusely! People are clueless about gold. They think that paper dollars are more valuable than gold. They’ll sell you their gold for a discount.
