  • This video is 30 minutes of the best tips and advice I can give to people who want to start a bbq channel and would like to know how to make bbq videos with only an iphone or Samsung phone.
    In this video we cover tips on how to use an iphone, story telling, microphones, audio, lighting, and what to buy (and what NOT to buy.) I tell you about alot of the good (and bad) advice I got starting out, and some of the mistakes I've made...hoping by sharing it helps you get started on the right foot.
    It's silly in parts and I was being attacked by nature the whole time (you'll see) but try not to let that distract from the info. There is alot in here! I made it for you guys but I needed to hear alot of this myself.

    First of all thank you so much for the shout out. Weird to hear my name in my subscriptions. And yes you have me dead to rights! I sat down to edit the orange chicken episode and I was like “wait why am I saying ‘orange flavored chicken’ over and over???” And the terrible thought of re-filming everything washed over me. And I almost did. But then I was like “screw it” just charged through hahaha. Can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. You just have to make the thing, which is why it’s wonderful you made this video! Hope it inspires others to just start and make something. Cheers, my friend! - EJ

    Great tips Justin. I've been doing this for almost 10 years, and still picked up some great tips from this video. I think we all continue to learn everyday that we do this. I know I sure do. Speaking of phones, that's exactly how I started way back when. iPhone 4 was a very crappy phone for shooting a video, and it's amazing how good they have gotten over the years. I still use my new iPhone for random 4th angle shots in almost every video I do.

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Rus. Yeah, the iphone 4 was my first smart phone also. It was rough, but the interesting thing is even the crappy iphone footage back then was good compared to the other cameras available back then...especially since it was (kinda) free with the phone. Anyways, I appreciate you watching, my friend.

    Justin, I am not sure if I have told you this or not, but a little over 2 years ago I watched a video that you and Troy did on starting and growing a YT channel. That video is the reason I started my channel. It inspired me. You gave me some advice in that video, you said to find a channel that you enjoy and watch every video and comment on them. So, I did that, I went back and watched every one of your videos and commented on them. I went on your YT journey with you and learned along the way. I think at one point my comments even pissed you off, but we got through it. LOL. Thank you for what you do and did for the BBQ community and for me, my friend. I owe you big!

I just recently started a channel and though I realize there is folks out there with much better equipment than me part of my vision is that I’m trying to give the “ average guy” a chance to make great BBQ. I am doing everything on an iPhone and my plan is for the videos to be raw, unedited and unfiltered. So many try to make it look like a movie. Thank you for this, Justin. I was just re-watching your episode with TROY about starting the channel when this popped up! I commented a year ago and I was 3 weeks in. Now I'm monetized and growing at a steady rate. I have the Iphone 11 Pro Max and I shoot in 4k 60fps and the quality is perfect without having to spend $2k on a camera. @BabyBackManiac  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so welcome. I am really glad you find it helpful. I love doing stuff like this.
      So here's the rub. (I should probably do a video on this.) I would do this type of thing alot but the bitter irony is if I do, most viewers who could use the info will never know it was uploaded. The system won't tell them because the YT system "wants" me doing bbq videos.
      So here's how that plays out. If I did a series of videos helping aspiring youtubers know exactly how to start a channel, the net effect would be the aspiring youtubers never seeing it until I went back to making ribs and saying "Hey, it's great that you are back! If you get a chance, could you make some videos showing aspiring youtubers how to start a channel." lol. It's crazy. But what can you do?

    AHA! I know someone who actually DOES have a "crappy" phone. That would be me, of course. A tiny little Samsung "orbit". It's just about as cheap as they get. Anyway, I need to practice what I (and everyone else) preach(s). I have this horrible, horrible habit of glancing off to the side during my "on screen" time. Why I do it, I'll never know. Experts always say to imagine your audience naked, which kinda' scares me... Maybe that's why I always look off to the side. Who knows, maybe a few insects will land on the camera and partake in an insectual gang bang. But I shall remember your words of expertise for the next vid. You said "trust the Dude"! I agree with you on the iphone and tell the story! When I started I had a 4k Canon video recorder, boom mic etc and end of the day I learned that my iphone with a wireless mic is just as good if not better! You Dont need to get GAS, Gear Acquisition Syndrome! lol. At the 11 minute mark when the bugs were buzzing you, I see so many channels that just show the bacon cooking or the grilled cheese cooking and there is nothing going on. That stuff adds nothing to the video and is a great point to jump off. I have been guilty in the past. In my last 10 videos I have really cleaned up my videos and have seen longer view times. We live and learn! Thanks for sharing what you have, great advice and ideas!

    • @BabyBackManiac

      Yeah, it makes a huge difference and keeps people engaged longer. People get hung up on video length ("shorter is better") but I don't personally think length matters. A compelling 20 minute video will fly by but a poorly edited 2 minute video can feel like an eternity. Thanks for watching!

    This is a great video man, very informative for a new youtuber in the BBQ space. A cell phone is all I use, and some of my viewers find that hard to believe. In fact there are times when a second camera would be cool, and when I think about buying one it's ANOTHER phone that I"m thinking about. As far as the content and the way my videos are scripted I think I might be on the right track there.
    One of my subscribers mentioned that almost all bbq videos are pretty-much the same, giving you the same information in the same way. I've tried to be very intentional about not doing that, but sometimes I edit out good personal content for fear that people would be like "I didn't come here for that" and skip past it. But enough people have commented on my videos and my style of delivering them that I'm going to be much more intentional about including more of my personal life in the videos, being careful to always make it a part of just being out in the back yard cooking. Great content as always. I'm going to really dig into this. I'll be checking out Red Cow too, if for no other reason than to steal that Orange Chicken recipe, lol!

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron,
      I think we've gotten to the point where cell phones should be the first choice for most people...and I think getting a second one makes sense. If I had to guess, 10 of my last 15 or so videos have been filmed almost entirely on iphone 13 pro max, and while the image isn't as good, the flexibility and freedom it gives me to be in the moment works out to a net positive. Since then, I've gotten the 14, and it's even better...particularly on the main lens in low light situations.
      I don't know if you are iphone or Android but if you are an apple guy, i would wait on the 15 before I bought a backup phone. The 15 will be out in September and they will have USB instead of lighting port which will make offloading files SOOOO much faster. (if you are an android guy, you probably already enjoy this feature.)
      Thanks for watching.

That didn't happen overnight but I am finally to the point the only new gear I am looking at is more lighting. Good audio made the biggest change for quality to my production! I agree, Audio is everything. I mean, just listening to the difference between the video mic NTG and the wireless go is pretty amazing...and that's a really good mic. By the way, I used the internal recording. I like it, but there is one really annoying thing. The meta data when you export is the time you export...NOT the time you capture it. It was a huge pain figuring out what went where.
      Yeah, Doug has a mandatory 2 hour nap after relations to recharge. I can relate.

    Great video Justin, we will however need an update on Doug and June’s bug family. Some critical points for sure, particularly sound and lighting. I use an iPhone, fairly early on I picked up a $30 lav mic, a cheap tripod and then eventually some cheap lights. It’s not perfect but works like a peach.
    Couple of other things: clean up the background for shots - drives me nuts when people have trash, random detritus and crap in the shots, personality is key - be yourself and genuine but realize that you’re talking to people even if you’re literally standing alone in front of a camera, not always an easy task to accomplish. Also don’t apologize and make excuses constantly, this isn’t an absolute, but people do want to watch someone who has confidence in what they’re doing and who knows you may be pointing out something they wouldn’t have noticed.
    Just start with what ya got and focus on continually improving, then after time buy gear when you’re ready for it.
    Cheers!

    Justin your timing on this video is fantastic. I have been great at making excuses for over a year now on getting started. I recently made the decision to put something out no matter how bad by the end of May and I'm holding to it. You made some great points. You mentioned something interesting about the algorithm that it won't recommend your video unless it has some BBQ in it when doing a video like this ( please do more of these types of videos 😀) This concerns me because after I get a couple of vids under my belt I intend to do some "catch and cooks" videos. Start with a short salmon fishing or crabbing etc then finish with the cook. I have seen some channels do very well with that format. The algorithm doesn't seem to mind. Could you explain why that is? I know that question is probably like asking why a dog licks himself, because he can ( sorry, couldn't help myself) Anyway I hope you do more of this. I know I'll be watching. Sir, have a great day and I'm going to re watch this a couple of times. 🌤👍😄

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically the channel cuts ruts and each one has it's own DNA of what the algorithm wants.
      Part of it is because you attract an audience interested in certain things (so if you go off topic, you are targeting the wrong viewers.) But the bigger part is youtube doesn't recommend it to other audiences.
      So a video like this would do well on a channel devoted to making youtube videos, but this will be my worst video ever. (not exaggerating...It's WAY off topic.) even though it has some really good information for someone starting out. Here most of my subscribers will never even get a chance to see it. They will just think I'm taking time off. (This is why people don't go off topic.)
      This is that struggle I was talking about a few videos back. This is how they box you in. However I decided "Screw it" and did it anyways because I know it will help and I want to give back.

    • @victorbenner539
      @victorbenner539 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BabyBackManiac let me see if I got this right. So if my channel and videos are mostly about cooking, mostly BBQ and outdoor cooking and I occasionally add in a little fishing, crabbing, grabbing some vegetables or herbs from the garden in the beginning but finish mostly with the cooking that's not going to confuse the algorithm, at least not to much,right? (I know a sentence should never be that long but hey it's me, I ALWAYS go long 😁.) So FYI, my channel is going to be about only two things and I'm not sure if folks OR the algorithm will see it. Food and people. Lots of things on food, growing, harvesting, catching, cooking. But people will be taking folks fishing ( yup including salmon) claming,crabbing, mushroom hunting. But also sitting down and enjoying the food. I need to find a way it doesn't confuse the algorithm. For the viewers it won't be confusing. It will simply be entertaining and educational. Thanks for your help. Very much appreciated. Oh, do you have a suggestion on that microphone you used attached to your shirt in the video. I agree about audio, it needs to be done well. No point in watching someone who you can't hear clearly.

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@victorbenner539 I think a better way of looking at it is like raising a kid. You try out lots of stuff and see what hits. If it's sports and not guitar, you'll eventually stop trying guitar...even if YOU really like guitar. If you kid has more potential in sports, everyone will be happier if you support that. And if the second kid likes guitar, it works the other way.
      Just try everything you are interested in and see what works best. Eventually you find stuff you are interested in may not work for the channel...but you'll do it occasionally anyways because YOU like doing it. (That's what I did today.)
      The mic I was using is called Rode Wireless Go 2. Link in the description if you want to check it out. Good luck with your channel. Send me a note when you post your first video.

      @@BabyBackManiac Thank you so much. Here's the approach I'm taking on you tube. Bare with me here a moment. A few years ago I saw a interview of Mr Clint Clint Eastwood. He was asked how much longer he was going to keep working. Well he smiled and replied saying " as long as it's still fun". Wise words. Do I want to reach out to as many people as possible, heck yes. But only so I can help others. Justin I'll share something with you. I'm a bachelor, never married, probably never will. I'll be turning 63 in a few days so the chance of having any kids at this point ain't looking good, right? And yet I feel a responsibility to hand down the knowledge that has been handed down to and the knowledge and experience I have had during my life time to others. It is a dept we all have to of those going into the future. My grandfather first started teaching me how to Grill a steak when I was about 5 years old. At that time he also got me interested in fishing and gardening. He passed away about 15 years ago and I still miss him very much. So this channel will be for me a tribute to him. I actually still have the grill he taught me how to grill ( it's older then me and will eventually be in a video) He was WAY ahead of his time. We still have the Kamado cooker he had brought over by a American airmen in the airforce from Japan. It's a little over 50 years old. I remember the day he got it. He did a smoked turkey on it that Thanksgiving. If you ever get up here for some salmon fishing I'll show you it. I have so many stories to tell. I'm really looking forward to sharing those stories.
