Salary negotiations do not begin until after a formal offer is made, but your answer to this informational question is an important opportunity to set the foundation for future compensation conversations.

    They are asking this now during your application, mandatory field in almost all online job applications. so no we dont have a chance to "deflect and delay"

    I always tell them to make me an offer first or provide me with the salary range for the role. I do not recommend asking to hear about their benefits package because that's when they try to low-ball you - especially if they have a solid benefits package. Companies are always going to try to get you at the lowest number possible.
