Mines started leaking from the oil filter. Saw one video about just replacing 1 o ring. I had no clue there was 4 O rings. Going to head out to my nearest Subaru dealer to get these parts. Thank you man 🤘

Make sure you identify your engine and oil stand/cooler and make sure they match with this one. Most vehicles have just one o-ring, while certain early models had this setup. Good luck!

Yes looked on the Subaru website & confirmed to fit. Just finished it on Jack stands, it was way easier than I first anticipated. I was able to complete it in about an hour or so with cleaning & degreasing. Replaced all 4 O rings. It’s a little messy but man no more burning oil smell

I just replaced these seals on my 2007 FXT.
Something that may be helpful to others: If you are doing this with the engine still in the car, you can do it without replacing the coolant by removing the 10mm bolt that attaches the crossover line, which will allow the oil cooler to dangle down with plenty of clearance to do the rest of the work. That way you can perform this repair at your next oil change.
I also took the oil cooler adapter and oil cooler adapter adapter to the sink for a thorough cleaning and replacing 3 of the seals in a comfortable location.

Thanks Neal, I think my 2006 FXT needs this repair done as I found the oil filter a mess. I'm at about 139,000 miles. Still having other issues like coked up oil control rings causing oil consumption, and transmission slipping that Trans X Stop Slip seems to help, but otherwise the car runs good, the AWD in winter is unbeatable. I'm trying some Liqui Moly MoS2 antifriction 10w40 and using seafoam in oil last 1,000 miles before oil change to see if it helps the coked rings.

Subaru EJ255 Oil Cooler Gasket replace:
    - drain oil
    - drain coolant
    1. remove oil filter
    2. remove cooler central retainer 24mm socket
    3. remove two coolant clamps from cooler
    4. remove first cooler stand-off with 10mm bolts
    5. remove interior retaining nut 21mm
    6. replace orange o-ring on backside of second standoff
    7. reinstall second standoff - exposed locating peg on reverse sits between webbing next to coolant hose coming out of engine block - tighten with 21mm
    8. install blue o-ring on secondary standoff which is now on engine
    9. remove and replace small o-ring on inside of first standoff
    10. apply oil to small o-ring so it doesn’t pinch on reinstallation
    11. gently reinstall first standoff without pinching interior small o-ring
    12. reinstall all 10mm bolts
    13. reinstall oil cooler - exposed locating peg on reverse goes to left of support (when facing car) in line underneath 10mm bolt
    14. reinstall 24mm central retaining bolt
    15. reinstall 2 coolant hoses
    - fill with oil
    - fill with coolant and follow air burping procedure

Very informative, only way to make it a little better would be to throw up torque specs and a list of whats needed but looks like some commenters have already done that for you. Super appreciated. Have 2011 Forester XT (with EJ255?) with 158,000 miles with a pretty good oil leak and this looks like where it might be coming from (in addition to the valve cover gaskets) and is hitting the exhaust and produces a very strong burning oil smell. I was thinking head gaskets but I don't think that's it, yay! I do all my own work. I figure stuff out eventually on my own and shudder to think what it would cost if I brought it into a shop and if they would even do this and replace the head gaskets instead.

I have had an oil leak above the oil filter on my '05 Baja turbo for years. I have changed the orange o-ring on the heat exchanger several times. I didn't know that there was the pedestal and adapter plate above it with more o-rings. Thanks for the great video. Most of the videos about the heat exchanger are about deleting it. Can an oil filter be attached to the block directly without the pedestal and adapter?

I initially watched a video for this but it must have been non-turbo. So I was a tad perplexed when the dealership quoted me for 3 gaskets when I expected 1, but they didn't suggest the blue O-ring? Anyway, I I went into the job half-cocked, as I didn't realise there was the second component to remove or have a 21mm socket so had to leave it for another day. Incidentally, does the 21mm need to be deep socket?
    Appreciate the video!

It definitely can if it is bad enough. Mine was leaking slowly but I could still smell it on the exhaust every once in a while. Telltale sign is if you have a little droplet on the bottom of your oil filter after driving (and if the oil cooler is filthy from the leak over time).

    • @subtledriver

I'd like to see that data because the thermostat only opens when the engine is getting too warm to cool it down. Which means the oil, causes by all the friction in the engine, is gonna be in to temperature before the coolant is. Therefore no "warm" coolant will be circulating through the oil cooler until the thermostat opens.
So please explain your claims and I'd love to see that data.
