Excellent video, Joe is the one got me started into fly fishing, specifically nymphing and euro nymphing here in Oregon. Thank you for continuously putting out great educational content. I like watching how you keep experimenting with other styles and techniques. Its awesome to see you tie it all together putting fish in the net. Someday I am going to have to come up and fish the Yakima canyon and visit Red's. Thanks again Joe!
Joe, the first thing I thought about the micro yarn setup is "Hey, that might work well in the wind instead of std euro nymphing". My thinking was i can get it out there, then drop the rod tip to keep the line behind the yarn out of the wind and let it drift, rather than getting pushed up or down river by the wind. Anyway, i'm going to try the set up, looks cool.
Total noob here... I'm doing my first trip to the Yakima (bank/wade) in two weeks so this video was super informative. Even though I'm not gonna tight line or contact nymph it was good to see those techniques. I'm planning on running dries and an indicator setup similar to what you did for your winter video. Might try the hopper dropper rig too. Sick vid!
Thanks Aaron, focus on the Hopper/Dropper. Get good at one thing, stick with it, and it makes switching to straight dry flies super easy. Just make sure you have really good Tungsten nymphs here in the summer as the flows can be quite swift. Heavy beads are good.
Awesome video Joe! What’s the heaviest tungsten bead you could use with that yarn indicator rig? Can’t wait to see your in depth video on this technique!
Great video. I’m excited to try the micro leader approach with my carbon xl 10’ 3. As I was watching it I think my 13’ tenkara rod might also work. Since you can’t manage your line the same with a tenkara rod I’ll just have to find the right amount of distance between the rod tip and yarn so I can keep as much line as possible off the water. I assume you were using flouro for all the nymphs.
I forgot to ask if you could do a video with something like a carbon xl. I know it’s not in the same league with a sage esn or one of those but many of us have a less costly rod to learn the technique. Thanks Joe.
Carbon XL will work fine, it' a bit on the short side at 10' no problem. I don't think the Tenkara will cast this rig quite right. It needs to be pure mono from the rod tip out to the Yarndicator.
The best I've found is the Beulah G2 10'8" 3 weight, it has to be an extremely light but very fast rod in order to cast that rig. It's tricky, as its pure mono. The larger nymph you use the easier it is, definitely a learning curve to it! No roll casting, all snappy overhead casting.

Hi Jesse, I think what you are asking is the distance from the yarndicator to the nymph, we ran everywhere from 2' - 4' depending on the spot. The distance from the yarndicator to the tippet ring is about 6" but less is better. I prefer the yarndicator to be within 2" of the tippet ring if that makes sense.
I’m assuming you were running 4X below the tippet ring and the dropper tag was 5X? I run this system on my spooky backcountry streams with big spooky trouty char’s! Thanks

On the yarndicator rig I run 5x from the tippet ring 90% of the time, all the way to the fly (which I run a single fly 90% of the time as well). I just like the way a single fly hangs.
On the yarndicator rig, are you doing any floatant pre-treatments at all? I imagine you want as little yarn as you can get away with, and sometimes floatant gels can add weight, especially if the yarn is longer length. Any specific article or vid references on this? I haven't yet found anything specific on troutbitten, but I'll keep looking. Either way, I will be playing around with this technique for sure. Thanks Reds!

Good question, I can go up to a 3.8mm, you can scale the yarn volume to match the bead size.

Yes, that rod gets a ton of playing time. Love that rod.

I don't remember him adding any flotant... he did brush it a few times with a small comb but I don't recall doing anything else with it.
