    Hmm. Not sure if this is relevant to AMD chips but I think I have an explanation for why it runs cooler when connected to an external monitor.
    On some Nvidia laptops with iGPUs, Optimus is a feature that allows seamless switching between the iGPU and dGPU. A side effect of this however is that outputs from the dGPU have to pass through the iGPU before being outputted to the screen, reducing performance a little bit due to a small bottleneck.
    When connecting to external monitors though, on some laptops, this bypassed Optimus. This means that you have a direct link to the dGPU, and it shows with increased frame rates in some games. Again, I'm not sure but this may also apply to AMD laptops.
    I think that by bypassing Optimus, theres less stress on the iGPU because it is no longer used as a pass through for the dGPU output. This may be why temps are lower. I can't say for sure though, at this point I'm just speculating.

    • @PremVijayVelMani
      @PremVijayVelMani 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Given that both CPU with iGPU and dGPU are from AMD, I expected they will bring something like advanced optimus mode, so that the output from dGPU directly goes to monitor for games. But we have to compare this external monitor behaviour to that of TUF A15 to get a better idea.

Also, comparing with your previous video, it looks like a completely different laptop thermally. Is it because of driver update ? Awaiting your Full review & GPU comparison. • @gustavoalmeida1579

      I guess the temperature difference when connected to external monitor is caused by the built in display leaking heat inside the laptop.

      Thanks . I've changed drivers on this laptop so many times, lol. I would agree, temps have come down on average. You still get quite large swings and often hitting 100 deg, depending on the game. Some games have the CPU clocked low , others high and when I do the comparison say against the Asus Tuf A15 this will be immediately noticeable I am sure. If the CPU approaches 4Ghz it gets very hot for sure.
      I still have some other games to add into the review so will test a cooling pad then.
      The external monitor completely threw me.
      I haven't mentioned it yet, but I do have issues with my speakers crackling or cutting out while gaming occasionally.

      @@OWNORDISOWN that large swings & hitting 100° ( Other than G5's poor cooling solution & design ) is it because, those games are not well optimised or AMD needs to do some fine tuning on 4800H particularly ? As we've already saw that 7nm Zen 2 chips are power efficient 🤔. If it's solely due to OEMs poor design, something must be done stop this. • @Rhino123freak
      @Rhino123freak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely the laptop engineering. Don't forget that temperatures are dependent on wattage. These are still 45 watt chips so they need to be cooled as such. Manufacturers just don't go that extra mile to ensure the laptop runs cooler.

    • @gismo3564
      @gismo3564 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing to keep in mind, is that the smaller the chip is the hardest it is to cool. Provided the power is the same. This is due to, having much less surface area to actually transfer the heat. A way to possibly combat this in the future is to have a tight seal from chip to heatspreader and having a small amount on none conducting oil to spread out the heat even further. Another way, is to "simply" design a much wider architecture resulting in higher IPC and using up more space on the chip. This however would always be a cost/benefit kind of thing, as manufacturers want to create as small chips as possible, to improve yield per wafer.

    @OWNorDisown I have purchased the G5 15 SE and it's arriving tomorrow. I am really not sure about keeping it however after seeing these results. The only problem is, I got a good deal on it. After all the discounts I have bought the same config as yours (4800h, 5600M, 16GB, 512GB) for £1000 (GBP). The original price was £1150. I could get a similar discount amount at HP but the question is whether the HP Omen will come at a comparable price with a comparable config. I will have 14 days to return for free. Do you think it's worth returning it and waiting a bit more for the Omen reviews or is the £1000 price tag too good so I should keep this G5 heater? Thanks for your thoughts.

    many youtubers don't show us the temperature problems

    • @gismo3564
      @gismo3564 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This highly depends on the chip in question. Silicon chip itself won't break until roughly 150C. However if you read the temperature just on the outside of the chip, the inner chip can easily be 40-50C hotter at a small hotspot. Therefore you have to be conservative.
      One of the reasons they can push temperatures higher, is because they have more temperature sensors ingrained in a net within the chips (think they mentioned this at CES). This means more precise readings and therefore they can push it higher.
      That being said, lower temperature is always better, but a reading of 100 on one chip, might be the same temperature as a reading of 75 on another chip.
      Just to find and ind article explaining it on Navi launch. Now I personally wouldn't like 110C but I get why they are being pushed closer.

    I use 4600h version of G5 and recently bought a 2k monitor. With the external monitor in AC Odyssey, I get the exact same results between 1080p and 1440p! The cpu temperature is relatively a bit lower on 1080p and noticeably lower on 1440p. I play Witcher 3, Ghost Recon Breakpoint and some other games on 1440p with just a little change on graphic settings and with the same fps. But on AC Valhalla which utilizes gpu always at 99%, the performance drops significantly (SOTR will be probably the same). These weird results seem to be because of smartshift! Lower the cpu usage, higher the gpu usage in especially bad optimized games - for example, 1080p AC Odyssey utilizes around 70-80% gpu and 1440p utilizes above 90% in my case. Ok, some games have optimization issues but this laptop is weird... really weird!
    I will test it a little more but for almost a week, this is my overall performance with external monitor.

      Anyway, 100+ degrees C is unacceptable. Temperatures in laptops shouldn't really exceed 75-80 degrees Celsius on both CPU and GPU when they are stressed to the maximum at the same time.

      @@OWNORDISOWN Perhaps you could reach out to DELL and tell them this. AMD supplied DELL with specs for both the 4800H and 5600M. Dell knows that installing just enough cooling for base clocks is not enough and will affect performance for the worse. They need to replace the cooling in this unit and beef it up so it can actually keep both the CPU and GPU at 75-80 degrees Celsius when both are stressed to the maximum.
      Its not impossible, and I think for the most part, DELL could add another 1 or 2 cooling pipes to the assemly, or, separate the cooling pipes so that CPU and GPU don't share the cooling, and each should have at least 3 cooling pipes with better fans.

    Dell needs to work on the cooling assembly in this unit.
    They have to give it more powerful cooling because its getting too hot right now (especially if you want to use the thing for content creation). Looking on the inside of the laptop, DELL certainly put in a bit of an anemic cooling into it (2 shared pipes for both the CPU and GPU - are they insane?).
    Both 5600m and 4800H are efficient... its DELL that messed up the cooling (sadly).
    Since DELL said they will be replacing the screen display with 120Hz version this summer, it would be an opportunity to install higher capacity cooling into the thing too. Obviously both the CPU and GPU are not performing as they should due to cooling assembly limitations.

    • @shuflie
      @shuflie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Smart shift won't work unless the cooling solutions are shared, it is because they share the same pipework that reducing power on one component allows the other to boost higher. The heatsinks and fans may need to improve, but they will still share pipework, maybe with an extra pipe. None of this will appear in a 120Hz panel refresh though, that will just slot in to replace the current 60Hz option. Retooling for better cooling isn't something that is likely to happen during the life of a model, they would open themselves up to claims that the early models weren't fit for purpose, expect to see bios or driver updates to limit boost instead.

    • @deksroning125
      @deksroning125 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shuflie smartshift doesn't depend on the cooling assembly at all. It wasn't described like that and would be quite mad if it did. The cooling assembly only has the fans connected to the mobo for power. The cooling assembly itself (meaning the pipes) are basically inert pieces of copper that only shuffle the heat away.
      Smartshift was described It only works if the Renoir Apu detects a dedicated gpu from AMD. The cooling has nothing to do with smartshift (nothing was mentioned about it)... It only dynamically shifts power between the cpu and gpu... That's it.
      As for Dell not reworking the cooling... Well to be fair the early units are not fit for purpose and consumers can claim this by showing Dell the evidence the laptop is reaching too high temperatures and that neither the CPU or GPU are able to reach their maximums like they should (the GPU cannot even draw the power it needs to perform as it should and the cpu is reaching over 100 degrees Celsius.
      It wouldn't be the first time for a company to recall a product for refitting or give consumers a chance to send the laptops back for refitting just because an OEM messed up the cooling.

    • @shuflie
      @shuflie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deksroning125 Smart shift depends on having a shared cooling system to allow one component have more thermal overhead by reducing the power (and therefore heat output) of the other. Have a look around the 1 hour 4 minute mark of th-cam.com/video/DetDeQWd9IM/w-d-xo.html where someone asked Frank about the ability to use it on an all AMD desktop. The reason it isn't possible there is because there is no shared thermal solution.

I have had one comment say that his 4600h Dell G5 runs like this and I have had a comment with my configuration run just like mine and he was thinking about returning it. I am sure as Smartshift matures things will improve. I am not sure what you your question is about AMD saying that the cpu temp is hotter than the core temp. I have said this before, the T control sensor is the correct sensor to measure Ryan thermals. To make things simple for my viewers, I went into HWinfo and changed the name of that sensor to CPU temp. You then complained so in my last video I reverted to the original name and added the core temp so you can see the difference. I explained all the sensors I was measuring to AMD and they agreed that the temperatures they were repoRting were accurate and within specification of the system. I don’t want to dwell on this issue anymore, I am moving on to the CPU tests then a brief summation review of the laptop.

    Hi Steven, i would like to ask you something not related with this video. I have a HP Omen 15 and accidentally drop some tea on keyboard and damage the motherboard, HDD and battery (according to HP summary report) here's the question: do you think I should pay the repair process with HP ($700 aprox) or look for another place to repair? This is bc last month I sent my unit for a problem with the HDD and it happened again 3 weeks after so now I don't trust in HP for technical solutions. 😞 Also, would like to know if I can do a trade in with the laptop so I can buy another one brand new (Idk if Microcenter do that) I need an advise, hope you can help me with it. Greetings from Ecuador.

      Hi Matthew, That is a shame. If the laptop doesn't even post, ie you cannot get into the BIOS, then the motherboard must be fried (can you rule out the RAM by swapping the RAM from another system ?) Its more likely that the motherboard is fried than the battery or hard drive. If you can get into the BIOS then perhaps it is the hard drive and that is a super easy fix. If the motherboard is bad that can be expensive. You might be able to salvage some money back on ebay for parts as people always want replacement panels, RAM etc

    • @gismo3564
      @gismo3564 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better readings results in being able to push it higher. Despite the readings being higher, it might actually not be hotter than a chip that reads 75C. This would have a bigger difference in read temperature and actual temperature. (If this is an old chip with only external temperature measure)
      In zen2 and Navi, there is a mesh of temperature sensors which should provide much more precise readings than earlier chips. And therefore they can push it easily to 100C (in readings) without damaging the chip.
      Silicon chips, are usually rated at a max temperature of 150C before deteriorating. And with better readings you can push it that much further and not fear for hotspots going above that.

      @Setzer K Actually no.
      Both AMD and NV mobile GPU's are very efficient (along with CPU's - especially those from AMD).
      Problem lies in OEM's inability to give laptops like these appropriate cooling. In short, DELL installed too weak cooling. That's why the temperatures are bad, and this in turn prevents both the CPU/GPU from reaching their full potentials.

    is 115 W total a little low for a gaming laptop? I know ryzen is pretty efficient but I've seen some laptops with a GPU that can draw almost that much power alone.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Azor says that the 5600m is a 90w to 100w GPU but its obviously using less here as the 4800H uses about 35w in games. Perhaps they cut it down a bit to help with thermals, because lets face it, unless that CPU clock goes down it runs hot.

      Dell should have installed better cooling which was appropriate for 4800H and 5600M power requirements when running at maximum, and tweaked the voltages for both the CPU and GPU as-well, instead of limiting the power and sacrificing performance.
      This is entirely on DELL, not AMD.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tCTL sensor is derived from the junction (Tj) temperature-the interface point between the die and heatspreader, the CPU core is probably an average of all 8 cores. By all accounts Ryzen processors should use the tCTL temperature. I listed both because I was getting grief from some folks about it running so hot and they said I was using the wrong sensor when there is only two to use in the first place.

    Hi Stephen,
    Might I ask how you managed to get Freesync to work? After numerous attempts I was told by the tech team at Dell that none of the models currently shipping comes equipped with a freesync panel. They'll come into play during August with as a 120hz panel. When I asked how others online have managed it since the new driver update, they replied that those are either incorrect information or managed with an external monitor. Would appreciate how you got yours to work. Cheers

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the driver Iinked does not give you Freesync? If that is the case there is another way.
      Install custom resolution utility, at the bottom there are additions, click add, then add again and select Freesync.
      You then need to restart the driver.
      Go to where you downloaded CRU and you will see restart64.exe, i think that is what its called. Your screen will flash and you will have Freesync.
