Repair worked great using 5x Radio Shack (P/N 272-1028) for my Onkyo HT-R960. Before: HDMI1 - Failed about 10 months ago, took 10-15 minutes to handshake HDMI2 - Starting to fail, occasionally took 5 minutes to handshake HDMI3 - NEVER worked correctly, always took 5 minutes to handshake HDMI4 - Starting to fail, occasionally took 5 minutes to handshake After: HDMI1 - Works PERFECTLY! I had many of the same issues with our TX SR-608 receiver expressed in this video and comments. I replaced the 3 capacitors on the hdmi board with the Radio Shack P/N 272-1028 capacitors and everything's working as it should. No more switching issues, no more momentary black outs, etc. Your video helped me a lot in tackling the repair myself. It was very easy.
196,500 views as of June 2014! Onkyo clearly has had a serious problem affecting many models, not just the 606! I'm one of them. Sounds worthy of a class action. I've also read Onkyo had setup as special web page specifically addressing the HDMI issue offering free repair signups at one time.
Just performed this surgery on a friend's receiver (HT-R667). I used Digikey part PCE3762CT-ND (6.3V, 100uF, 2000h lifetime @ 105C, and the same size as the original part). Since I had the tools, I used hot air to remove the old caps rather than break them off, and installed the new ones with my iron. It worked perfectly! Before the fix, the receiver took 20-30min to get any signal to the TV. After replacing the caps, the receiver and TV pair up in a few seconds, and everything once again works as it should. Thanks for the video! It was extremely helpful. One piece of advice I'd give to others trying this hack: don't forget to check the polarity of the capacitors before you solder them on! I had to desolder a couple in shame after realizing that I'd installed them back to front.
Had the same problem with my TX-SR706. I replaced all 100uf 4V capacitors with radial 100uf 25v. there were 15 on my HDMI board top and bottom. Now receiver works great. I was going to spend $90.00 @ an electronics place ($1.89/capacitor + $60.00 for labor. I decided to do it myself, went to Ebay and got 20 capacitors for $8.00, and soldered them myself. Fixed my 606 with the help of this video. There were actually 10 capacitors; I ordered from digikey, 100uf 10v. Replaced all 10. Now my hdmi works great!!
Before : No OSD menu; Component not being passed thru to HDMI output; More and more regular dropouts, lasting a couple of seconds at a time; lines flashed across the screen intermittently. After : No more dropouts or flashing lines; OSD menu now works perfectly. Component passthru works as it should. Thanks for this guide. Saved me about £200.
I did the cap replacement on my TX-SR606 following this instruction video the other day and the receiver now work flawlessly. Before the replacement, green lines were scattered on the screen on one input channel and the image disappeared for a few seconds on all channels. This happened randomly but more frequent when the receiver was not warmed up. This got worse over time. With no previous soldering experience I manage to replace the caps with the stock model and now it works great. Awesome!
I just completed this repair successfully. I replaced all 5 of the caps as Ed pointed out. I had trouble soldering on the caps with the plastic base, so I removed it and created 'little feet' like Ed did with his 'larger' caps. The whole process took me ~1hr due to removal and soldering. I took my time and everything turned on perfectly! Handshake is now instant! It was starting to take ~5 min before. Perfect fix.
Great video. Just did mine. £2.70 worth of capacitors from eBay and it's working fine. The only thing I'd add to your video is how to get the board out: 1: Remove 5 wire cable by pushing down on the white block and lifting bare wires out 2: Remove ribbon cable by pulling it straight out 3: Pinch white plastic board suppport and lift board off it 4: Pry 3 connectors off upright board carefully with a plastic tool

I posted about 3 weeks ago. Just a follow up I replaced all 13 of the 100uf caps and it works perfectly. To be honest I was skeptical but it worked adn my wife was wowed as well.
Fixed my TX-SR606 this evening :) Great guide,I re-watched it a few times during my repair just to be sure. I used 100uF 10V for the main replacements,also bought 1uF 50V polycaps for the regulators,I struggled to get the solder to stick to the regulator tab, so left it for now,didn't want to cook anything. Replaced the 5 capacitors, board back in , powered up and so far all is great.Quick HDMI switching, and it now passes 1080p through from my blu-ray,where it wouldn't before the repair Thanks.
I have been dealing with this issue for about a year and had had just about given up on a reasonable solution. I had even researched and picked out a replacement AVR to be purchased after the holidays. After watching your video I went to a local store and picked up the necessary caps. After struggling a bit with the 12v/GND connector, I spent about 15 minutes with the soldering iron and the problem is fixed. Thanks, Ed, you saved me and my Onkyo.
Hi Ed, Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. It was really great. As at least one other person mentioned, getting the black cable unplugged from the HDMI board was tough. Otherwise it was very simple and quick. Before: No HDMI video output to TV, including OSD -- started off intermittent but could reset, became progressively more common and eventually nothing would fix it. After: Everything perfect!

Before: Receiver continued to take longer and longer for HDMI to turn on until eventuality it wouldn't work at all. After: works like it did when it was new!!! If I can do this ANYONE CAN! Hi Ed, this week I bought me a non-working 606 at our local swap meet for $130. After watching your video instructions I went to Fry's and bought the 100 mF caps (they only had one 25V and four 63V in inventory). Spend $7.79 on them, which included tax. It took me about 20 minutes to complete the job and voila: perfect picture and sound! Thank you so much for your advice.
Worked like a charm on my SR606! Replaced the five caps with four Radio Shack 100uf 35v caps and one 220uf 35v cap (purchased by mistake, as it was in the same rack as the 100uf caps). Wouldn't handshake before, and after the fix, everything connects in a second or two, just like when the receiver was new. I almost can't believe it works! Thanks for the video!
Man, I can't begin to thank you enough. I don't know a diode from a capacitor, but I ordered the parts from Digi-Key for under $8 and had it fixed in about an hour. Had absolutely ZERO experience doing this kind of thing, but had no trouble at all with your detailed instructions. Old parts came off just like you said and I bridged the new ones in place as you suggested. Great video.
Thank you very much for your suggestion. The Cap I destroyed is the one that's all by itself on one side of the board. Looking at it just now, I decided not to try additional repairs. Worked for my TX-SR606, bought the Radio Shack capacitors. Took about 15-20 min. Now it switches within seconds. Save me alot because i was gonna replace it already. Thank you very much for the very detailed video and instructions.
I removed the board and had a friend who is handy with soldering circuit boards replace the caps. He used 100mf, 35 and 40v. HDMI handshake would take 5 min+ for xbox and blu-ray (sat box always OK). Works perfectly now. Went from pricing out replacement receivers to getting it fixed for price of fast food lunch. This was all after I dropped the board twice! Thank you for the great explanation.
Glad I found this video. I bought mine off of craigslist last night. The guy I got it from said that it kept losing signal so he sold it to me for 50 bucks. I went and got the capacitors from radio shack replaced them in about 45 min and it works like new, not to bad for a $60 investment. Thanks a bunch for making the video.
First time I've ever posted to You Tube. My receiver has been going out for about a year now. There was no On Screen Display and I had to keep switching from source to source and turning unit on and off in the hopes of having HDMI come on line. Yesterday morning I had had enough. I took off 6 caps instead of 5 as I got confused as to which to remove. After replacing all caps, unit works just fine. Thanks a million as I was about to buy another unit but definitely not Onkyo.
For everyone out there with a TX-SR806 with the same problem, this definitely works. However, there are 13 100uf caps that need replaced. I just did this to my out of warranty 806, and it worked perfectly (Even with accidentally removing a wrong cap and having to replace it as well :) ) Thanks Ed!!

I had issues with my 606 as well, the HDMI daughter board died in about a two hour period of time. No signal was also displayed on my TV. I received the correct capacitors yesterday got them soldered on and it works fantastic now! Thanks so much for this video, about the only thing it didn't cover is the removal of the power cable on the board itself, its a bit tricky but you have to depress the white connector and pull the five wires out carefully.

Before: My receiver started to take from 5 to 10 mins to get hdmi signals (I mostly used the game hdmi slot), and then it took, from 30 mins to hours for it to work. And sometimes the sound was null and then worked within a few more minutes it showed an image. After: HDMI works fine again, amazing tutorial, well explained. Saved me a lot of money. I replaced the 5 old capacitors with some 100uf 16v ones.
I followed your instructions exactly and it worked!! I went to Radio Shack and picked up the 100uf 35v electrolytic capacitors. They only had four in stock so I used one 100uf 50v. I called a local electronics supply company (Radio Shack had the parts but no idea) and asked if they would work and they said yes as long as you use a 100uf one, the voltage is basically the voltage at which they will blow. I was having an issue with switching only from the component connection and lack of OSD. Bought a 40w solder kit and 8 x 6.3v 100 uf caps from maplins, bargain at £18.61 incl delivery. The whole thing took 75mins to do, mainly because I'd never soldered anything before. It was a bit untidy but the connections were good and now eveything works perfectly. I only replaced the 5 caps illustrated with the idea of replacing them all if needed. Really pleased with the outcome. Big up to Ed. Cheers bud.
Before: Had the receiver for about 3 years. On Screen Display stopped working about a year ago. I didn't care much since I rarely used it. Receiver takes multiple minutes to recognize anything when first turned on. Cable box always worked after a few minutes. PS3 not recognized. HDMI from computer worked 25% of the time. After: Used 100uf 50V caps from Radioshack. Now recognizes all HDMI ports within 3 seconds. OSD still not working but I dont care. This was a huge help! Thank you!
My Onkyo HT-R667 was only taking about five minutes to warm up but it was annoying, so I followed all of your steps and it works instantly now (I filmed it but don't plan to upload). I used a cheap soldering iron from Radioshack along with 5 of their 100uf 35v capacitors which totaled about $18. Followed your instructions and did it in less than an hour. Hello everyone. This worked! Thanks Ed! I have some tips: 1) The 5-wire-thing-connected-to-the-HDMI-card is connected via a white clip-type-thing. (Technical terms.) The white clip DOESN'T come off. Pull the 5-wires-thing directly out of the white clip. It take a bit of force. 2) When you pull the capacitors off, BE CAREFUL. Wriggle them VERY gently. I used too much force, and one of the contact-mount-things on the mobo came off! So I had to build up the solder from scratch. (Not easy)
This fix worked for me. Before the fix, my the 606 would cut off when PS3 or xbox360 was the source, the setup menu would not appear on the TV, constantly said "No Signal" on the 606 LCD display, and was just unreliable in switching between HDMI sources. After the fix, HDMI switching was quick and responsive, setup menu appeared on the OSD, no more random power losses with 360 or PS3, and all is well. Thank you Ed, good video!
I have an Onkyo TX-SR606 and this worked awesome! I've had this receiver about 3 years and it has gotten worse over time. I had everything hooked up by hdmi cables... an Xbox 360, a LG Blue ray player, Wii and cable TV. The only one that never gave me a problem was the cable tv. The Xbox was the worst and usually take about 10 minutes to show video if ever. I finally had to hook everything up except the cable directly to the tv. I used the radio shack P/N 272-1028 and worked great. Thanks!
Just completed this repair today with a mix of 35 and 50 V 100uf capacitors from radio shack. Works great now. While removing one of the old capacitors, it seemed to slightly peel back the conductor on the surrounding printed board (I probably pulled to hard), so I was a little worried about that but no problems to report. I'm glad I saved 600 bucks or more over buying a new one!
Thank you so much for this video. I have just saved myself about $300 by doing it myself. My Integra 5.9 AV receiver did exactly what yours did, slowly my HDMI input faded to nothing, so replacing the capacitors was the only thing to do. I put in 5 x 100uf 16V capacitors and the receiver works an absolute treat. Cost was $7.50 for 10 capacitors (i broke 2 new ones - connector snapped) and a stater soldering kit $35 TOTAL $42.50. Just to look at it a shop would have charged $50, so I still saved money.
Before finding this video my SR606 was taking up to 20 minutes to show the video/audio. It would just flash no signal until it "warmed up". My HTCP would only work on 24hz and would NEVER work with 60hz. After watching this guide and replacing 5 of the caps, it now works wonderfully!!! Thanks so much for the video!!!!
Wow!!...just WOW!!!...You just saved me a few hundred dollars. I was going to throw it away. The only thing I did is used 100uf, 6.3 volts because of local availability. $5 and done! According to the electronics store guy, I could go higher in voltage od the capacitor as long as the uf remained the same. THANK YOU!! thank you!! THANK YOU!!

Before: 2.5 years ownership. Same as everyone else, it slowly took longer and longer for the HDMI handshake to take place. Yesterday, I waited 9 hours, and nothing happened, so I imagine it was done for good. After: Perfection. Everything works, even the menus that other people are having trouble with. I had zero soldering experience going into this. Radio Shack only had 2 of the 100uf 35v, so I bought 3 100uf 50v. Works fine. Ed, thank you. You saved me hundreds of dollars.
Ed, thank you so much. I used your suggested capacitors in the more information section above (100uf 4v) and replaced all five. They fix perfectly on the board. The amp now switches quickly between my Xbox and cable TV and DVD player. No more waiting 10 minutes for things to start working, and having to try 5 or 6 times to go from TV to the Xbox. Can't thank you enough.

Thanks. This fixed the issue I was having with the HDMI output taking 2 minutes or more to show up on my TV. A temporary fix for this issue would be to enable HDMI power control (RIHD), under hardware in the menu. I think that's onkyo's name for CEC. This will keep the HDMI board powered up all the time, even when the tuner is in standby. The downside is that it will suck about 60-70w. The caps in mine were closer to 5mm. I ended up buying spool of 1000. They are high quality 6v. I'll sell them cheap for anyone who is doing this repair :).

Just finished mine. Replaced those five caps with some regular radial through hole 105 degree 6.3 volt caps and it works great now! Some of the pads pulled up a bit, but the traces never broke. All caps are resting solidly after soldering to the board. Bought the receiver used and used composite for a few years. After getting a TV with HDMI it would sometimes pass signal with one port after tens of minutes. Never successfully switched between two sources.
After: Works perfectly! I had some big issues with the repair, tho. The power cable was stuck and i ripped the inner 3 wires (solder wire to all 5 to extend the cable) and one of the leads on the front cap actually tore the IC board. I got a glob of solder to stick and apparently it was enough to complete the circuit. This is the first IC board mod I've done and I was very apprehensive. I waited about 10 months to do the fix and with your video I was able to build the confidence to get it done.
I changed the 4 caps you suggested. Got my full volume back (before the output on all sources was low). HDMI inputs still did not work. Changed all, total 10 capacitors, 100UF at 4Volt, two on top of board, 8 on bottom of board, now it works fine. Thanks for the tip.

Worked immediately on my HT-R667. Before I would not get any output from the HDMI at all, and after replacing the five caps with 100uF 50v ones it's as good as new. I hope someone at Onkyo sees this, as over 100 people have tried this fix on youtube, not to mention how many more that tried it on other forums.
I have discovered the condition you spoke of is a chronic ill for 3 units (mine, my son in law and a friend) in my circle....all had the same issue. I replaced the caps as you suggested and it cured each one. Thank you for taking the time to put it here on youtube. BTW, I upgraded to 6v caps that increased the life expectancy to 2k hours.
I've done this repair without any prior experience in electronics. I messed the soldering pretty badly but it still works! Before: No video, even after a long wait (used to be 10-15 minutes wait 2 years ago, but then I stopped using video completely and just tried it a week ago) After: The video works immediately on my sat receiver. It takes a bit longer for ps3 (I ordered huge 65v caps, maybe that's why), there's no OSD. Still, that's enough for me (wanted to free up opt input) Thank you, Ed!
I would really like to thank you. I had the same problem, but no warranty anymore (went to Onkyo but they turned me down...) I got the HDMI board and went to a local electronic store and they fixed this for me for 30 euro. Put it back and got it perfectlyworking again!! THANK YOU! Had the same problem, a tx-sr606, changed those capacitors with 16v 100uF from an old settop box, worked like a charm. My onkyo started out with problems that it would not send vid/sound to the tv after about 5-10 minutes, but today, it just stopped totally and would not work at all. Much thanks to you it now pops up the second my tv is on, thanks a bunch! :D
Back home and start the soldering as shown in the video. The 6 or so pins ground connections is a bit hard to disconnect but after I squeezed both end the connection just come loose. Although the soldering job looks pretty flimsy but after putting everything back the receiver works faultlessly. Thank you very much once again Ed!
I eventually got it off, but I was afraid I was going to break it if I pulled too hard. I couldn't figure out how to get those 4 black wires out of the white connector either. I worked on the board with that still attached. Thank you so much for this video. You saved me $350. I was about to go buy the new TX-SR609 and give up on this one. By the way, the one I fixed was the TX-SR606.
Good video. Inspired me to repair my ONKYO TX-NR737 AV receiver. The device did not work for long. In my experience, a self-made fan control protects the components from overheating in the long term.
Thanks for the demo. I was able to fix my 606 with no trouble at all. However, even though the HDMI switching did come back, I still do not have the onscreen display back, but I can live without it. After all, I've been without it for 2 years! I will need to purchase a cooling fan as I've already seen signs of it overheating again. Every time I would change the tv channel, I would have no audio. I put a fan on it, and instantly it worked like a champ.
Just fixed mine with caps from Digikey, too. Works like a charm!!! I couldn't get my x-Box or Blu-Ray to play unless I waited for about 15 min. My Wii never worked. Now everything works perfectly! Thanks to you and the guys at HiDef Forum!!! You Rock!
Using your video my 606 works perfectly now. Prior to fix I had same symptoms as you. STB HDMI input took 3 or 4 minutes to come on. DVD wouldn't come up at all and no OSD. I used the Mouser 661-PSA10VB100M 10V 100 microF caps. I left the leads long enough for easy soldering. I also added the four 1 microF bypasses to the VR's. I used a 23 Watt pencil, which was fine for the 100's but was small for the bypasses to the tabs. Thanks much!!
Excellent video! I was having the same issue with my SR606 in that it took approximately 10 min of warm up time before I would get video. The audio would cut in and out until the unit warmed up. Had the cable company replace the cable box and no change. Watched your video and went to Radio Shack and bought their 100uf caps. Installed them on the board by laying them horizontally on the circuit board to save space. Took about 45 min start to finish and now everything works flawlessly.
You are a legend -Been banging my head against the wall for about 12 months trying to figure it out -saw your video today so went out and bought the parts for a total of $1.35au at Jaycar and took about 40 minutes to do it. As soon as I turned it on, it picked up the 4 hdmi inputs straight away. Earlier it took 20 minutes to recognise the PS3. Thanks again - I actually just joined You Tube so I could thank you - so Thank-You for saving me about $300 and giving me my sanity back.
Okay - some more details. My 606 was not displaying OSD at all. The video said I needed 5 caps so I ordered 10 jic; it turned out I needed all 10. When removing the old ones, one could tell they had been in some serious high temperature - they fell apart pretty easily. Anyway, after replacing the OSD and switching and upconvert all worked great. Thanks Ed!!
Before: My Onkyo HT-R960 receiver took five minutes to "warm up" before anything would work on HDMI. After the warmup, it would work properly. After: Fix worked perfectly! No "warm up" time needed! Thanks for the video!
I carefully removed the plastic connector from the end of the wire leaving only bare wire ends. Then I carefully reinserted each wire into the spring terminal connector on the HDMI board, making sure that each wire is not touching the adjacent wires. It worked great.
Thank you very much for this. I've been living with this for months now and thought the receiver was a goner. My jaw dropped when it came on and instantly had picture. Not only that I found the capacitors from some old equipment by chance, so it really didn't cost me anything other than 30 min of my time.

I have the SR607 and this worked great! 5 caps on the underside of the HDMI board which I had trouble removing, so I kept the ribbon cables connected and just flipped the board over to do the soldering. I used 100uf 6.3V caps from Digi-key.com (product number PCE4801CT-ND). I bought a 40w soldering iron from Radio Shack and was done in about 40 minutes. The worst part was trying to get the old caps off. I used needle nose pliers and gently twisted the old caps clockwise and counter-clockwise (without heat) until the leads broke off. The rest was just like your video and it now works like a charm. Saved me from buying a new unit!

Excellent guide. I'm a soldering noob but was able to replace all 5 capacitors successfully. Before it would take 15 or more minutes for my PS3 to handshake with the receiver and a couple minutes on my DVR. My OSD and component to HDMI were dead. After, the HDMI switching works properly on my PS3 and DVR but my OSD and component is still not working. My EEPROM shows ??????? so I think this is as good as it'll get according to the forums I read. Thanks again!
Dan P, I was a click away from ordering a new receiver (and not an Onyko) until I saw your comment. Entered my info as per the link provided, my receiver (TX NR709 purchased Dec 2011) qualifies for the special warranty. Renewed my faith in Onkyo for correcting a known problem.

Dave, Did you need to supply proof of purchase? I was considering buying one for cheap on Craigslist and hoping that the Onkyo would fix it under this program before trying to do the capacitor fix.
TX-SR606. No A/V for HDMI when first powering up. After a few minutes, switching inputs back and forth fixed it. Over time, had to wait longer (about 10 min) before switching inputs worked. Also couldn't see OSD. Used two Radioshack P/N 272-1028 and three P/N 272-1044 (all they had in stock). Couldn't get black cable off. Left it on during the repair. All devices new connect with HDMI show up within a few seconds even after the received has been off overnight. OSD works right away too. Thanks!

My receiver was taking forever to switch HDMI inputs..like from watching TV to watching DVD, or any of the items I have hooked up..one of the ports would never switch. Anyways ..I went to radio shack got the caps..replaced the 5 you show and it works like a champ now. switches super fast..I am shocked I put up with the delay so long. So this is about an 8 dollar fix. Super thankful for you taking the time for putting this up.
Wow, that was amazing. I picked up 3 16 V and 2 32V capacitors from Frys. Lousy soldering job and it still worked. Had to buy forcepts, solder, and iron. Total of about $20-25 bucks. Thank you so much. Before: CBL/SAT worked after few minutes of warm up. PS3 would not work on any ports. AFTER: No warmup, PS3 working on DVD, and OSD works again. Amazing video. Thanks,
Woooohhooooo, YES!!!!! Ed many, many thanks. Problems started about 2 years ago when the On Screen Menu didn't show up. Then I started having problems with switching the HDMI ports. It gradually became worst to the point where I could use my AppleTV or PS3 anymore. I replaced the 5 caps with 100uF 10Watts pod capacitors I found at a local store. It worked like a charm. It switches very fast and I couldn't hear the clicking sound it made before. Thanks again Ed.
Many thanks for posting this video. I have the HT-R960 and before the fix it was behaving exactly as you describe, taking longer and longer to recognise Sky HD box / Apple TV / PS3. I carried out the fix using 10V, 100uf capacitors from Maplins as in the UK. Now its back to its original state and immediately recognises HDMI signals. Not bad for £2.50.
Woo! Replaced the 5 100uf capacitors on the bottom of HDMI board with radio shack equivalent and the switching is much faster and finally reliable. Thanks for posting this, saved me buying a new receiver. Now can someone please post information on how to install a fan into their receiver? Thanks!
owned it for years before it started failing takng longer and longer to accept the signal. tv broke and switched to a different tv. when i fixed the tv it would no longer accept the singal no matter how long I waited. I ended up knocking a small chip off the board near the plastic pop rivet. luckily i was able to solder it back on. I also snapped one of the power wires and ended up having to remove the plastic connector and solder the wires directly. thanks for the fix, saved my ass.
Thx for this excellent video, saved me having to bin my onkyo. Now works perfectly. I used 5 Panasonic long life 105C 100uF 50v radial caps, got them on ebay, cost £3 for all the repair parts, fixed the daughterboard in less than 1h. The voltage is not so important, people are reporting success with higher voltage caps. Do be careful removing the hdmi board esp the power cables.
Outstanding! I was pessimistic/afraid it wouldn't work for me, but it totally did! Before: Purchased late '08 and a year later HDMI handshake started lagging, starting w/PS3, then DVD player. Lag was only a couple of minutes and then got progressively worse until stopped working completely a couple of weeks ago. After: Connected to PS3 immediately, as well as DVD and MacMini. Component audio was not affected and still works fine. Total Time for Fix: 2hrs 45mins I really took my time Thanks Ed!!!
Thanks for the video!!! I replaced the 5 caps with the 35v ones from Radio Shack and now my OSD is back and my HDMI switches almost instantly!!! It's a nice sense of accomplishment to fix something like this myself and not need to take it to a repair shop.
Eddie, many thanks for this tutorial. You saved my life. I was getting despred with my Onkyo reciver, everything what was pluged to hdmi port, didnt worked. I fixed it like in the tutorial. But I couldn find 100uf 4V capacitors in my store, so I decided to go with 100uf 16V and it works like a charm. The seller also sad, that the higher V cant hurt, and he was right. Thanks Ed. I have the Onkyo TX-SR806 with the same HDMI switching issues everyone else is having. I went to radio shack and they were worthless. they only had 1 Capacitor in each local store and I needed 13 for my receiver @ $4.95 each.. I decided to order the Caps online from Mouser Electronics 35v 100uF 20%. Much cheaper, It was my first attempt at soldering to a circuit board. I took my time and it worked great. I held down the base and pulled the cap apart, then the base. easiest method...
Biggest issue, we had a hell of a time disconnecting the ground +12 connector. Ended up ripping it off and re-sautering it. Thanks for the video. We won't know if it worked till we reconnect it tomorrow. Hopefully no capacitors popping off!
My issue was that I could get audio/video from my cable box through HDMI to the receiver, but nothing from my X-Box and Blu-Ray from HDMI, and Wii through component. Same issue on all HDMI ports. The Wii never worked through the component input. I did what you did, but added what the guy on HiDef Forum did. All works perfectly now, including the Wii! Thanks!!!! Saved $500!
I ended up destroying the connector, but during reassembly very carefully inserted the bare (actually, they are tinned) wires into the spring terminals on the HDMI board making sure they are separated. Thanks Ed!
Thanks so much Ed. I followed your instructions and my useless TX-SR606 is working great again! The most difficult part for me was getting the power connection out from the board. I used some needle nose pliers and held the white connector down while pulling the wire with the pliers. Putting it back in was easy.
Wow, this was such a simple fix. Had no picture or sound from any of the HDMI ports. Followed the video using the parts from radio shack and 2 hours later everything is working perfectly.
I just did this on mine and I have poor coordination, but my first time soldering was enough to save this receiver. This saved me about $300 from buying a new receiver (had to buy new tools)! You rock Ed.
I bought the radio shack caps, installed 'em and my unit works perfectly! Thanks a bunch Ed. BUT... to reiterate what Steve Rosenberg said in the comments below - the white plug with the black wires is impossible to disconnect if you don't know what you're doing. The connector is what I call a "barbed" connector - it works like the finger cuff things that you used to get at the county fair. Press down on the white plug and the wires will pull out easily. Push 'em back in to reconnect.
Thanks for the video Ed, I got my Onkyo TX-SR607 working by following your guide (and the comments on the video). I'm going to have a hard time recommending Onkyo to anyone after this ordeal. Their service center wanted me to pay $215 to have this fixed. Obviously after hearing that I realized that I was being suckered.If I had a small complaint, I wish the video was edited to show the process sequentially.

I had many of the same issues with our TX SR-608 receiver expressed in this video and comments. I replaced the 3 capacitors on the hdmi board with the Radio Shack P/N 272-1028 capacitors and everything's working as it should. No more switching issues, no more momentary black outs, etc. Your video helped me a lot in tackling the repair myself. It was very easy.
196,500 views as of June 2014! Onkyo clearly has had a serious problem affecting many models, not just the 606! I'm one of them. Sounds worthy of a class action. I've also read Onkyo had setup as special web page specifically addressing the HDMI issue offering free repair signups at one time.
Just performed this surgery on a friend's receiver (HT-R667). I used Digikey part PCE3762CT-ND (6.3V, 100uF, 2000h lifetime @ 105C, and the same size as the original part).
Since I had the tools, I used hot air to remove the old caps rather than break them off, and installed the new ones with my iron.
It worked perfectly! Before the fix, the receiver took 20-30min to get any signal to the TV. After replacing the caps, the receiver and TV pair up in a few seconds, and everything once again works as it should.
Thanks for the video! It was extremely helpful. One piece of advice I'd give to others trying this hack: don't forget to check the polarity of the capacitors before you solder them on! I had to desolder a couple in shame after realizing that I'd installed them back to front.
Had the same problem with my TX-SR706. I replaced all 100uf 4V capacitors with radial 100uf 25v. there were 15 on my HDMI board top and bottom. Now receiver works great. I was going to spend $90.00 @ an electronics place ($1.89/capacitor + $60.00 for labor. I decided to do it myself, went to Ebay and got 20 capacitors for $8.00, and soldered them myself. I will be attempting this shortly on my 706, what were the symptoms of your unit? Mine takes about 15 minutes before I get an HDMI signal to the tv.
Fixed my 606 with the help of this video. There were actually 10 capacitors; I ordered from digikey, 100uf 10v. Replaced all 10. Now my hdmi works great!!
Before : No OSD menu; Component not being passed thru to HDMI output; More and more regular dropouts, lasting a couple of seconds at a time; lines flashed across the screen intermittently.
After : No more dropouts or flashing lines; OSD menu now works perfectly. Component passthru works as it should.

I did the cap replacement on my TX-SR606 following this instruction video the other day and the receiver now work flawlessly. Before the replacement, green lines were scattered on the screen on one input channel and the image disappeared for a few seconds on all channels. This happened randomly but more frequent when the receiver was not warmed up. This got worse over time. With no previous soldering experience I manage to replace the caps with the stock model and now it works great. Awesome!

I just completed this repair successfully. I replaced all 5 of the caps as Ed pointed out. I had trouble soldering on the caps with the plastic base, so I removed it and created 'little feet' like Ed did with his 'larger' caps. The whole process took me ~1hr due to removal and soldering. I took my time and everything turned on perfectly!
Handshake is now instant! It was starting to take ~5 min before. Perfect fix.
Great video. Just did mine. £2.70 worth of capacitors from eBay and it's working fine. The only thing I'd add to your video is how to get the board out:
1: Remove 5 wire cable by pushing down on the white block and lifting bare wires out
2: Remove ribbon cable by pulling it straight out
3: Pinch white plastic board suppport and lift board off it
4: Pry 3 connectors off upright board carefully with a plastic tool

Great guide,I re-watched it a few times during my repair just to be sure.
I used 100uF 10V for the main replacements,also bought 1uF 50V polycaps for the regulators,I struggled to get the solder to stick to the regulator tab, so left it for now,didn't want to cook anything.
Replaced the 5 capacitors, board back in , powered up and so far all is great.Quick HDMI switching, and it now passes 1080p through from my blu-ray,where it wouldn't before the repair

I have been dealing with this issue for about a year and had had just about given up on a reasonable solution. I had even researched and picked out a replacement AVR to be purchased after the holidays. After watching your video I went to a local store and picked up the necessary caps. After struggling a bit with the 12v/GND connector, I spent about 15 minutes with the soldering iron and the problem is fixed. Thanks, Ed, you saved me and my Onkyo.
Hi Ed, Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. It was really great. As at least one other person mentioned, getting the black cable unplugged from the HDMI board was tough. Otherwise it was very simple and quick.
Before: No HDMI video output to TV, including OSD -- started off intermittent but could reset, became progressively more common and eventually nothing would fix it.
After: Everything perfect!

Hi Ed, this week I bought me a non-working 606 at our local swap meet for $130. After watching your video instructions I went to Fry's and bought the 100 mF caps (they only had one 25V and four 63V in inventory). Spend $7.79 on them, which included tax. It took me about 20 minutes to complete the job and voila: perfect picture and sound! Thank you so much for your advice.
Worked like a charm on my SR606! Replaced the five caps with four Radio Shack 100uf 35v caps and one 220uf 35v cap (purchased by mistake, as it was in the same rack as the 100uf caps). Wouldn't handshake before, and after the fix, everything connects in a second or two, just like when the receiver was new. I almost can't believe it works! Thanks for the video!
Man, I can't begin to thank you enough. I don't know a diode from a capacitor, but I ordered the parts from Digi-Key for under $8 and had it fixed in about an hour.
Had absolutely ZERO experience doing this kind of thing, but had no trouble at all with your detailed instructions. Old parts came off just like you said and I bridged the new ones in place as you suggested.

Worked for my TX-SR606, bought the Radio Shack capacitors. Took about 15-20 min. Now it switches within seconds. Save me alot because i was gonna replace it already.

I removed the board and had a friend who is handy with soldering circuit boards replace the caps. He used 100mf, 35 and 40v. HDMI handshake would take 5 min+ for xbox and blu-ray (sat box always OK). Works perfectly now. Went from pricing out replacement receivers to getting it fixed for price of fast food lunch. This was all after I dropped the board twice! Thank you for the great explanation.
Glad I found this video. I bought mine off of craigslist last night. The guy I got it from said that it kept losing signal so he sold it to me for 50 bucks. I went and got the capacitors from radio shack replaced them in about 45 min and it works like new, not to bad for a $60 investment. Thanks a bunch for making the video.
First time I've ever posted to You Tube. My receiver has been going out for about a year now. There was no On Screen Display and I had to keep switching from source to source and turning unit on and off in the hopes of having HDMI come on line.
Yesterday morning I had had enough. I took off 6 caps instead of 5 as I got confused as to which to remove. After replacing all caps, unit works just fine. Thanks a million as I was about to buy another unit but definitely not Onkyo.
For everyone out there with a TX-SR806 with the same problem, this definitely works. However, there are 13 100uf caps that need replaced. I just did this to my out of warranty 806, and it worked perfectly (Even with accidentally removing a wrong cap and having to replace it as well :) ) Thanks Ed!!

I had issues with my 606 as well, the HDMI daughter board died in about a two hour period of time. No signal was also displayed on my TV. I received the correct capacitors yesterday got them soldered on and it works fantastic now! Thanks so much for this video, about the only thing it didn't cover is the removal of the power cable on the board itself, its a bit tricky but you have to depress the white connector and pull the five wires out carefully.

Before: My receiver started to take from 5 to 10 mins to get hdmi signals (I mostly used the game hdmi slot), and then it took, from 30 mins to hours for it to work. And sometimes the sound was null and then worked within a few more minutes it showed an image.
After: HDMI works fine again, amazing tutorial, well explained. Saved me a lot of money. I replaced the 5 old capacitors with some 100uf 16v ones.
I followed your instructions exactly and it worked!! I went to Radio Shack and picked up the 100uf 35v electrolytic capacitors. They only had four in stock so I used one 100uf 50v. I called a local electronics supply company (Radio Shack had the parts but no idea) and asked if they would work and they said yes as long as you use a 100uf one, the voltage is basically the voltage at which they will blow. I was having an issue with switching only from the component connection and lack of OSD. Bought a 40w solder kit and 8 x 6.3v 100 uf caps from maplins, bargain at £18.61 incl delivery. The whole thing took 75mins to do, mainly because I'd never soldered anything before. It was a bit untidy but the connections were good and now eveything works perfectly. I only replaced the 5 caps illustrated with the idea of replacing them all if needed. Really pleased with the outcome. Big up to Ed. Cheers bud.
Before: Had the receiver for about 3 years. On Screen Display stopped working about a year ago. I didn't care much since I rarely used it. Receiver takes multiple minutes to recognize anything when first turned on. Cable box always worked after a few minutes. PS3 not recognized. HDMI from computer worked 25% of the time.
After: Used 100uf 50V caps from Radioshack. Now recognizes all HDMI ports within 3 seconds. OSD still not working but I dont care.

My Onkyo HT-R667 was only taking about five minutes to warm up but it was annoying, so I followed all of your steps and it works instantly now (I filmed it but don't plan to upload).
I used a cheap soldering iron from Radioshack along with 5 of their 100uf 35v capacitors which totaled about $18. Followed your instructions and did it in less than an hour. Thanks for doing a competent and thorough tutorial!

Hello everyone. This worked! Thanks Ed! I have some tips:
1) The 5-wire-thing-connected-to-the-HDMI-card is connected via a white clip-type-thing. (Technical terms.) The white clip DOESN'T come off. Pull the 5-wires-thing directly out of the white clip. It take a bit of force.
2) When you pull the capacitors off, BE CAREFUL. Wriggle them VERY gently. I used too much force, and one of the contact-mount-things on the mobo came off! So I had to build up the solder from scratch. (Not easy)
This fix worked for me. Before the fix, my the 606 would cut off when PS3 or xbox360 was the source, the setup menu would not appear on the TV, constantly said "No Signal" on the 606 LCD display, and was just unreliable in switching between HDMI sources. After the fix, HDMI switching was quick and responsive, setup menu appeared on the OSD, no more random power losses with 360 or PS3, and all is well. Thank you Ed, good video!
I have an Onkyo TX-SR606 and this worked awesome! I've had this receiver about 3 years and it has gotten worse over time. I had everything hooked up by hdmi cables... an Xbox 360, a LG Blue ray player, Wii and cable TV. The only one that never gave me a problem was the cable tv. The Xbox was the worst and usually take about 10 minutes to show video if ever. I finally had to hook everything up except the cable directly to the tv. I used the radio shack P/N 272-1028 and worked great. Thanks!
Just completed this repair today with a mix of 35 and 50 V 100uf capacitors from radio shack. Works great now. While removing one of the old capacitors, it seemed to slightly peel back the conductor on the surrounding printed board (I probably pulled to hard), so I was a little worried about that but no problems to report. I'm glad I saved 600 bucks or more over buying a new one!
Thank you so much for this video. I have just saved myself about $300 by doing it myself. My Integra 5.9 AV receiver did exactly what yours did, slowly my HDMI input faded to nothing, so replacing the capacitors was the only thing to do. I put in 5 x 100uf 16V capacitors and the receiver works an absolute treat. Cost was $7.50 for 10 capacitors (i broke 2 new ones - connector snapped) and a stater soldering kit $35 TOTAL $42.50. Just to look at it a shop would have charged $50, so I still saved money.
Before finding this video my SR606 was taking up to 20 minutes to show the video/audio. It would just flash no signal until it "warmed up". My HTCP would only work on 24hz and would NEVER work with 60hz. After watching this guide and replacing 5 of the caps, it now works wonderfully!!!

Wow!!...just WOW!!!...You just saved me a few hundred dollars. I was going to throw it away. The only thing I did is used 100uf, 6.3 volts because of local availability. $5 and done! Ed, thank you so much. I used your suggested capacitors in the more information section above (100uf 4v) and replaced all five. They fix perfectly on the board. The amp now switches quickly between my Xbox and cable TV and DVD player. No more waiting 10 minutes for things to start working, and having to try 5 or 6 times to go from TV to the Xbox. I"m from Brazil and here not possible to fix my receiver because the cost of $350,00 you help me so much I changed 5 capacitor and my receiver working very well. I repalced 5x100uf 16v capacitors. Thank you for this vídeo.
Thanks. This fixed the issue I was having with the HDMI output taking 2 minutes or more to show up on my TV.
A temporary fix for this issue would be to enable HDMI power control (RIHD), under hardware in the menu. I think that's onkyo's name for CEC. This will keep the HDMI board powered up all the time, even when the tuner is in standby. The downside is that it will suck about 60-70w.
The caps in mine were closer to 5mm. I ended up buying spool of 1000. They are high quality 6v. I'll sell them cheap for anyone who is doing this repair :).
Before: 5-10 minute "warmup" needed to HDMI handshake, sometimes with a lot of input switching before it would "catch"
After: Handshakes right away, no problems.

Just finished mine. Replaced those five caps with some regular radial through hole 105 degree 6.3 volt caps and it works great now! Some of the pads pulled up a bit, but the traces never broke. All caps are resting solidly after soldering to the board. Bought the receiver used and used composite for a few years. After getting a TV with HDMI it would sometimes pass signal with one port after tens of minutes. Never successfully switched between two sources.
After: Works perfectly! I had some big issues with the repair, tho. The power cable was stuck and i ripped the inner 3 wires (solder wire to all 5 to extend the cable) and one of the leads on the front cap actually tore the IC board. I got a glob of solder to stick and apparently it was enough to complete the circuit.
This is the first IC board mod I've done and I was very apprehensive. I waited about 10 months to do the fix and with your video I was able to build the confidence to get it done.
I changed the 4 caps you suggested. Got my full volume back (before the output on all sources was low). HDMI inputs still did not work. Changed all, total 10 capacitors, 100UF at 4Volt, two on top of board, 8 on bottom of board, now it works fine. Thanks for the tip.

Worked immediately on my HT-R667. Before I would not get any output from the HDMI at all, and after replacing the five caps with 100uF 50v ones it's as good as new. I hope someone at Onkyo sees this, as over 100 people have tried this fix on youtube, not to mention how many more that tried it on other forums.
I have discovered the condition you spoke of is a chronic ill for 3 units (mine, my son in law and a friend) in my circle....all had the same issue. I replaced the caps as you suggested and it cured each one. Thank you for taking the time to put it here on youtube. BTW, I upgraded to 6v caps that increased the life expectancy to 2k hours.
I've done this repair without any prior experience in electronics. I messed the soldering pretty badly but it still works!
Before: No video, even after a long wait (used to be 10-15 minutes wait 2 years ago, but then I stopped using video completely and just tried it a week ago)
After: The video works immediately on my sat receiver. It takes a bit longer for ps3 (I ordered huge 65v caps, maybe that's why), there's no OSD. Still, that's enough for me (wanted to free up opt input)

I would really like to thank you. I had the same problem, but no warranty anymore (went to Onkyo but they turned me down...) I got the HDMI board and went to a local electronic store and they fixed this for me for 30 euro. Put it back and got it perfectlyworking again!! THANK YOU! Had the same problem, a tx-sr606, changed those capacitors with 16v 100uF from an old settop box, worked like a charm.
My onkyo started out with problems that it would not send vid/sound to the tv after about 5-10 minutes, but today, it just stopped totally and would not work at all.
Much thanks to you it now pops up the second my tv is on, thanks a bunch! :D
Back home and start the soldering as shown in the video. The 6 or so pins ground connections is a bit hard to disconnect but after I squeezed both end the connection just come loose. Although the soldering job looks pretty flimsy but after putting everything back the receiver works faultlessly. Thank you very much once again Ed!
I eventually got it off, but I was afraid I was going to break it if I pulled too hard. I couldn't figure out how to get those 4 black wires out of the white connector either. I worked on the board with that still attached. Thank you so much for this video. You saved me $350. I was about to go buy the new TX-SR609 and give up on this one. By the way, the one I fixed was the TX-SR606.
Good video. Inspired me to repair my ONKYO TX-NR737 AV receiver. The device did not work for long. In my experience, a self-made fan control protects the components from overheating in the long term.
Thanks for the demo. I was able to fix my 606 with no trouble at all. However, even though the HDMI switching did come back, I still do not have the onscreen display back, but I can live without it. After all, I've been without it for 2 years! I will need to purchase a cooling fan as I've already seen signs of it overheating again. Every time I would change the tv channel, I would have no audio. I put a fan on it, and instantly it worked like a champ.
Just fixed mine with caps from Digikey, too. Works like a charm!!! I couldn't get my x-Box or Blu-Ray to play unless I waited for about 15 min. My Wii never worked. Now everything works perfectly! Thanks to you and the guys at HiDef Forum!!!

Using your video my 606 works perfectly now. Prior to fix I had same symptoms as you. STB HDMI input took 3 or 4 minutes to come on. DVD wouldn't come up at all and no OSD. I used the Mouser 661-PSA10VB100M 10V 100 microF caps. I left the leads long enough for easy soldering. I also added the four 1 microF bypasses to the VR's. I used a 23 Watt pencil, which was fine for the 100's but was small for the bypasses to the tabs. Thanks much!!
Excellent video! I was having the same issue with my SR606 in that it took approximately 10 min of warm up time before I would get video. The audio would cut in and out until the unit warmed up. Had the cable company replace the cable box and no change. Watched your video and went to Radio Shack and bought their 100uf caps. Installed them on the board by laying them horizontally on the circuit board to save space. Took about 45 min start to finish and now everything works flawlessly.
You are a legend -Been banging my head against the wall for about 12 months trying to figure it out -saw your video today so went out and bought the parts for a total of $1.35au at Jaycar and took about 40 minutes to do it. As soon as I turned it on, it picked up the 4 hdmi inputs straight away. Earlier it took 20 minutes to recognise the PS3. Thanks again - I actually just joined You Tube so I could thank you - so Thank-You for saving me about $300 and giving me my sanity back.
Okay - some more details. My 606 was not displaying OSD at all. The video said I needed 5 caps so I ordered 10 jic; it turned out I needed all 10. When removing the old ones, one could tell they had been in some serious high temperature - they fell apart pretty easily. Anyway, after replacing the OSD and switching and upconvert all worked great. Thanks Ed!!
Before: My Onkyo HT-R960 receiver took five minutes to "warm up" before anything would work on HDMI. After the warmup, it would work properly. After: Fix worked perfectly! No "warm up" time needed! Thanks for the video!
I carefully removed the plastic connector from the end of the wire leaving only bare wire ends. Then I carefully reinserted each wire into the spring terminal connector on the HDMI board, making sure that each wire is not touching the adjacent wires. It worked great.
Thank you very much for this. I've been living with this for months now and thought the receiver was a goner. My jaw dropped when it came on and instantly had picture. Not only that I found the capacitors from some old equipment by chance, so it really didn't cost me anything other than 30 min of my time.
Thanks Ed. I have the SR607 and this worked great! 5 caps on the underside of the HDMI board which I had trouble removing, so I kept the ribbon cables connected and just flipped the board over to do the soldering. I used 100uf 6.3V caps from Digi-key.com (product number PCE4801CT-ND). I bought a 40w soldering iron from Radio Shack and was done in about 40 minutes. The worst part was trying to get the old caps off. I used needle nose pliers and gently twisted the old caps clockwise and counter-clockwise (without heat) until the leads broke off. The rest was just like your video and it now works like a charm. Saved me from buying a new unit!

Excellent guide. I'm a soldering noob but was able to replace all 5 capacitors successfully. Before it would take 15 or more minutes for my PS3 to handshake with the receiver and a couple minutes on my DVR. My OSD and component to HDMI were dead. After, the HDMI switching works properly on my PS3 and DVR but my OSD and component is still not working. My EEPROM shows ??????? so I think this is as good as it'll get according to the forums I read. Thanks again!
Dan P, I was a click away from ordering a new receiver (and not an Onyko) until I saw your comment. Entered my info as per the link provided, my receiver (TX NR709 purchased Dec 2011) qualifies for the special warranty. Renewed my faith in Onkyo for correcting a known problem.

This is the special warranty program as it relates to the HDMI board issue. Received the postage paid box from Onkyo, and shipped it back via FedEx today. Reports are the repair fixes the reciever good as new.

Did you need to supply proof of purchase? I was considering buying one for cheap on Craigslist and hoping that the Onkyo would fix it under this program before trying to do the capacitor fix.
TX-SR606. No A/V for HDMI when first powering up. After a few minutes, switching inputs back and forth fixed it. Over time, had to wait longer (about 10 min) before switching inputs worked. Also couldn't see OSD.
Used two Radioshack P/N 272-1028 and three P/N 272-1044 (all they had in stock). Couldn't get black cable off. Left it on during the repair.
All devices new connect with HDMI show up within a few seconds even after the received has been off overnight. OSD works right away too. Thanks!
Thank-You so much for taking the time to make this video. My receiver was taking forever to switch HDMI inputs..like from watching TV to watching DVD, or any of the items I have hooked up..one of the ports would never switch. Anyways ..I went to radio shack got the caps..replaced the 5 you show and it works like a champ now. switches super fast..I am shocked I put up with the delay so long. So this is about an 8 dollar fix. Super thankful for you taking the time for putting this up.
Wow, that was amazing. I picked up 3 16 V and 2 32V capacitors from Frys. Lousy soldering job and it still worked. Had to buy forcepts, solder, and iron. Total of about $20-25 bucks. Thank you so much. Before: CBL/SAT worked after few minutes of warm up. PS3 would not work on any ports. AFTER: No warmup, PS3 working on DVD, and OSD works again. Amazing video. Thanks,
Woooohhooooo, YES!!!!! Ed many, many thanks. Problems started about 2 years ago when the On Screen Menu didn't show up. Then I started having problems with switching the HDMI ports. It gradually became worst to the point where I could use my AppleTV or PS3 anymore. I replaced the 5 caps with 100uF 10Watts pod capacitors I found at a local store. It worked like a charm. It switches very fast and I couldn't hear the clicking sound it made before. Thanks again Ed.
Many thanks for posting this video. I have the HT-R960 and before the fix it was behaving exactly as you describe, taking longer and longer to recognise Sky HD box / Apple TV / PS3. I carried out the fix using 10V, 100uf capacitors from Maplins as in the UK. Now its back to its original state and immediately recognises HDMI signals. Not bad for £2.50.
Woo! Replaced the 5 100uf capacitors on the bottom of HDMI board with radio shack equivalent and the switching is much faster and finally reliable. Thanks for posting this, saved me buying a new receiver. Now can someone please post information on how to install a fan into their receiver? Thanks!
owned it for years before it started failing takng longer and longer to accept the signal. tv broke and switched to a different tv. when i fixed the tv it would no longer accept the singal no matter how long I waited. I ended up knocking a small chip off the board near the plastic pop rivet. luckily i was able to solder it back on. I also snapped one of the power wires and ended up having to remove the plastic connector and solder the wires directly. thanks for the fix, saved my ass.
I've got the HT-R667 out of warranty with these exact symptoms and this fixed it right up.

I used 5 Panasonic long life 105C 100uF 50v radial caps, got them on ebay, cost £3 for all the repair parts, fixed the daughterboard in less than 1h.
The voltage is not so important, people are reporting success with higher voltage caps. Do be careful removing the hdmi board esp the power cables.
Outstanding! I was pessimistic/afraid it wouldn't work for me, but it totally did!
Before: Purchased late '08 and a year later HDMI handshake started lagging, starting w/PS3, then DVD player. Lag was only a couple of minutes and then got progressively worse until stopped working completely a couple of weeks ago.
After: Connected to PS3 immediately, as well as DVD and MacMini. Component audio was not affected and still works fine.
Total Time for Fix: 2hrs 45mins I really took my time Thanks Ed!!!

I replaced the 5 caps with the 35v ones from Radio Shack and now my OSD is back and my HDMI switches almost instantly!!!
It's a nice sense of accomplishment to fix something like this myself and not need to take it to a repair shop.
Eddie, many thanks for this tutorial. You saved my life. I was getting despred with my Onkyo reciver, everything what was pluged to hdmi port, didnt worked.
I fixed it like in the tutorial. But I couldn find 100uf 4V capacitors in my store, so I decided to go with 100uf 16V and it works like a charm. The seller also sad, that the higher V cant hurt, and he was right. So everything is working fine now.

Thanks Ed. I have the Onkyo TX-SR806 with the same HDMI switching issues everyone else is having. I went to radio shack and they were worthless. they only had 1 Capacitor in each local store and I needed 13 for my receiver @ $4.95 each.. I decided to order the Caps online from Mouser Electronics 35v 100uF 20%. Much cheaper,
It was my first attempt at soldering to a circuit board. I took my time and it worked great. I held down the base and pulled the cap apart, then the base. easiest method...
Biggest issue, we had a hell of a time disconnecting the ground +12 connector. Ended up ripping it off and re-sautering it. Thanks for the video. We won't know if it worked till we reconnect it tomorrow. Hopefully no capacitors popping off!
My issue was that I could get audio/video from my cable box through HDMI to the receiver, but nothing from my X-Box and Blu-Ray from HDMI, and Wii through component. Same issue on all HDMI ports. The Wii never worked through the component input.
I did what you did, but added what the guy on HiDef Forum did.
All works perfectly now, including the Wii! Thanks!!!! Saved $500!
I ended up destroying the connector, but during reassembly very carefully inserted the bare (actually, they are tinned) wires into the spring terminals on the HDMI board making sure they are separated. Thanks Ed!
Thanks so much Ed. I followed your instructions and my useless TX-SR606 is working great again! The most difficult part for me was getting the power connection out from the board. I used some needle nose pliers and held the white connector down while pulling the wire with the pliers. Putting it back in was easy.

I just did this on mine and I have poor coordination, but my first time soldering was enough to save this receiver. This saved me about $300 from buying a new receiver (had to buy new tools)! You rock Ed.
I bought the radio shack caps, installed 'em and my unit works perfectly! Thanks a bunch Ed. BUT... to reiterate what Steve Rosenberg said in the comments below - the white plug with the black wires is impossible to disconnect if you don't know what you're doing. The connector is what I call a "barbed" connector - it works like the finger cuff things that you used to get at the county fair. Press down on the white plug and the wires will pull out easily. Push 'em back in to reconnect.
My TX-SR806 had the same problem and after following the video i replaced 13 caps and it is now as good as new.

Thanks for the video Ed, I got my Onkyo TX-SR607 working by following your guide (and the comments on the video). I'm going to have a hard time recommending Onkyo to anyone after this ordeal. Their service center wanted me to pay $215 to have this fixed. Obviously after hearing that I realized that I was being suckered.If I had a small complaint, I wish the video was edited to show the process sequentially.
