    This is the only information i could find on the web that described my sound exactly, and just as you did, I was getting ready to order a clutch. BUT! I accidentally stumbled across something else that seems to have fixed it, Im not a A/C mechanic by no means so i cant explain why, It was just a fluke that i ran across it. I Checked my Freon level for kicks and giggles, someone had overcharged it in the past. After getting the Freon level back in the safezone, and letting the truck sit a while, it noise has vanished. So i would highly suggest anyone reading this also gives that a look as well. Even if you haven't recently added any. The vehicle I was working on was recently purchased, driven about two months and about 6k miles, then out of the blue this noise started. From what i can understand, too much freon not only causes a pressure problem, but it also causes internal components to reach unoperatable temps which is causing the knocking. Thanks for the video, just wanted to share my findings in hopes it might help someone.

      Thanks! I'd refueled my freon yesterday and wondered what was the ticking sound coming from my compressor. Is it too much freon if my gauge says 80? My mechanic was the one who refilled it.

      Would the AC work and clutch engage when the Freon was too high? I have the same noise but the clutch won’t engage at all

      Thank you for this information! My compressor lost freon due to a leak and never got it fixed or filled back to proper level. Well after the knock of death it’s getting changed just to be safe not sorry..

      @@cgillly Yes the clutch would still engage if the Freon is too high. The clutch will not engage if the Freon is very low. Other reasons of a clutch not engaging could be the AC fuse, AC relay or too much of a gap from wear.

    I know why!! Apparently ALL rotary vane type compressor will make this kind of knocking sound. The 3 vanes take turns to slide down and contact the cylinder walls to compress the low pressure refrigerant. The type of system works better at higher rpm but noisy at low rpm. That's it!!

      Carlos Torres Thanks. I'll check it out. I watched the first 10 minutes of the other video that you provided the link for.
      That guy uses a lot of shop tools and works on the compressor while it's out of the car. I was hoping the clutch/pulley/bearing could be taken off without having to disconnect the compressor from the car. And I was also hoping it could be done with just a pulley puller, ratchet set, open end wrench and snap ring pliers.

      Kevin Patrick it's possible with the 3.3L because that's what I did. I'm assuming you have the 3.1 liter since you have a 94 and I'm not sure if it's doable or not. There is a wealth of knowledge on our cars at www.A-Body.net this forum has helped me big time on stuff like upgrading my suspension to replacing window motors. We have guys with Buick century's and Ciera's packing 300-400+ HP. Lots of help in there for guys like us who really appreciate their old GM A-cars and want to keep them running... or flying. Lots of AC threads on the forum and I even did a write up of fixing my compressor with a ton pics. I'm under the name Moonkilla if you want to have a look around or check out the AC threads. Hope this helps

    • @kevinpatrick4408
      @kevinpatrick4408 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cutlass Ciera My buick is the park avenue base model with the 3.8 litre. But I'm almost certain that they share the same compressor. I've already changed the radiator, p.s. pump, idler pulley and serpentine belt. Everything is a tight fit under the hood and the a.c. compressor is at the bottom of the engine (same as your car) so it looks like the only way I'll be able to get to it is from underneath the car. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.👍

      Maybe outer AC clutch bearing since it turns when AC is off and the whole assembly turns together when the clutch is engaged. Or an AC tensioner pulley bearing would be worth checking. Pull the AC belt and rotate both the pulleys for the AC (tensioner and compressor un-engaged) and see if you feel roughness in either. Just my 2 cents

    I have this exact sound coming from the area where the AC compressor that started once I got my car back from auto shop for new Ac compressor install. Thinking the noise might be from the passenger wheel, axle shaft or the spark plugs knocking. The knocking sound only starts when I begin hitting 50mph, no rattling or squeeking sound just loud knocks with rotation of wheels. Sounds similar but still not sure what it could be. My lug nuts are torqued to spec, brakes aren't loose, suspension has no issues, and had an alignment recently done. Irony is the sound only started happening after having the AC seviced. Could this be my problem? When at idle and revving rpms there's absolutely no sound. Also I've been having really bad gas mileage since the knocking started if that has any correlation with one another.

    • @harbingerharbinger5529
      @harbingerharbinger5529 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Turns out the knocking sound went away for a few weeks after hearing loud thumps while driving. Was driving fine with no sound for weeks until the other day a loud humming/ buzzing sound started accompanied with higher rpms. Took it to a shop and found a damaged transmission gear. Not sure if that was the original issue but definitely was an issue with the car. My advice always have a mechanic test the entire system before replacing or repairing anything.

      Did you look deeper into your issue. I noticed the other day when my air conditioner was on my engine rattled. Sounded like engine knock. I have been driving around since last night trying to get it to trip off again but hasn't. I was not riding with my air conditioner on. Mine is subtle however I think if I leave it, it'll sound like that. It sounds just like this video.

      I have the same issue my a/c just stopped working like the beginning of this week and now it sounds like an engine knock I went to the mechanics they said it was something with my motor 🤷🏾‍♀️ I don’t believe them because I didn’t explain anything about the a/c they just immediately told me it’s my engine/motor. I’m going to another mechanic to get a second opinion but I’m like 1000% sure it has to do with my AC
