Air Conditioner Noisy and Loud

- Is your air conditioner really noisy, loud, screeching, rattling, grinding, or hissing? The compressor or condenser fan sounds like a jet engine or a helicopter? Perhaps the contactor is buzzing up a storm. In this video I go over 14 reasons why an AC may be very noisy inside or outside while the unit is running. This is not an extensive list so if you know something I missed or have a correction to anything I said, I would love to see you in the comments section! Here is the sound blanket link I promised to add to the description:

Thank you for including actual noise sounds! This is a great reference video!
Glad to hear you found it helpful! Thank you for stopping by, may the rest of your weekend be wonderful!
Yes! Thanks for that.
@@WordofAdviceTVThanks for the amazing video. My fan is making screaching sound like your first example. What kind of oil can I spray on the shaft? Wd 40?
Agree! Very helpful! Thx!
This survey of 15 condenser noise problems is Brilliant. Not only does Jay clearly describe each noise and its possible cause, but the video is seamlessly edited to show the defect and repair it! This young mechanic is great. I should know because I had a D-1 license myself from 1981 to 1990 and was a fairly good technician, but this fellow is better!
This morning my wife and I thought for sure our AC unit was on the way out. I watched this video when I got home and then went outside to check it out. Turns out the fan motor screws that hold it it to the shroud were a full turn loose, all 4 of them! Tightened them up and it’s as quiet as can be. Thanks so much!
I'm amazed at how smooth and clear you speak without any ers and uhs, or anything. It reminds me of Charles Stanley. Very good advice. Thanks.
Thanks for this video! I was able to verify the bad contactor on my moms air conditioner, and replace it with one bought from the local AC repair store. The audio sample helped. Not only did it solve the problem for only $22, the AC part store was thankful I supported a local retailer.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the sounds you added for me to match what I am hearing to what could be wrong. Thank you.
Thank you for taking the extra effort of editing the sounds into the video. VERY well done. This 100% is the most helpful video I've seen on this topic
Agreed! Mine was making the grinding noise. Sprayed some a.p. lubricant and now it’s super quiet!
I love the fact you included the sounds the unit makes per different scenarios. Very helpful
Sir - YOU are the person who makes the world a better place. Period!! YOU are saving 1000's of DIY guys $1000's of dollars with your incredibly helpful tips!! I know you get a lot of praise - but we really do mean it and appreciate this kind of guidance. God Bless you and your business(es)!
So glad you played the sounds! Knowing it could be something loose I found the brands name plate was half off!
Amazing info! NO ONE gives out free info like this! This video will save atleast $400, if a contactor needs replacement!
Thanks a lot. My heat exhaust radiator was clogged with dirt, causing the compressor to heat up and make loud noises which was mentioned in the "Harrowing noise" section of your video. I was able to immediately address the issue thanks to you. Keep up the good work.
Best teacher ever.
yes KUDOS KUDOS to YOU !!!!!! i just fixed my ac with your help a 135 dollar fan and some caps vs a 4k new outside consider unit .the unit is 16 years old and just got some new life !!!!
Thank you SO much for this video. The inclusion of the noises helps so much.
Great video. You've already helped me DIY one HVAC problem. I'm sure it will not be the last!
Your explanation is always the best! You saved me a lot.
Thanks! Great video as I was quickly able to diagnose my a/c's issues as having a loose top grate. Tightened the screws and the noise went away.
I had a loud grinding noise coming from the condenser fan motor. Not a screeching noise and the motor turned freely with power disconnected. It would not do this all the time. Checked everything that you mentioned. The motor was a two speed Emerson motor. After many hours of checking it turned out to be a defective circuit board fan speed controller located inside the AC unit( Comfortmaker twenty years old). I bypassed this circuit board and installed a short jumper wire so the fan motor would work on high speed only and it works perfect. No more noise. This circuit board is no longer available anywhere. With 92 degrees outside I`am getting getting 53 degrees inside at top of furnace duct work before going in to main duct that feeds the house. I`am a retired electric utility service technician. Thanks so much for all your great videos!!!
Wow, that is awesome that you were able to get it to work without any noise! Major kudos to you for tracking it down and also finding a way to fix it. Your case is pretty unique but thank you for describing it for anyone else who may go through the same 🙏🙏
@@WordofAdviceTV The wiring diagram on the inside of the AC access cover saved the day to help trace this problem down. It showed what wires fed the high and low speed on the fan motor and the circuit board. I just removed and taped the low speed connector and jumper the high speed connector to the AC feed. Circuit board has been disconnected.
God bless you and your family! The zoom oil was a priceless fix
Awesome video Jay!!! Great explanations and sound effects!!!
Outstanding presentation! Thanks!
You included the sound that’s very professional!
Buzzing contactor for the win! Thanks for taking the time to post this video!
A real Samaritan among air conditioner meachanics..❤️
Well I did the brick for a while. I was at Home Depot and was looking for new screws since mine were stripped out and just happen to pickup some rubber washers. So, I put those washers under the screws and it worked great. It also reduced vibration. Now I can put the brick back in the sidewalk. Thanks for the tips.
A real professor.. good job I learned a lot thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This is a great video, especially since you added the sample noises in the video at the right times.
Thank you! Glad to hear you liked the sample sounds!
Great video, great information, as always. Thanks Jay.
Great list, should be required viewing for all A/C owners. Could save them a lot of money. One thing you could mention is the noise from a defrost cycle when it's a heat pump kind running in heating mode and outside temps are getting low. First time I heard that and it happened two or even three times in a row I was freaked out. But it's apparently quite normal and it's protecting the coils from freezing.
that's what our tech said for our unit, but it is REALLY LOUD I wish I could post the video here, and now the HOA is complaining.. heat works fine, but the unit is loud.
Thank you so much. That was excellent wrap up of AC noise problems!
We have a carrier, comfort AC system that has the big great, and we did not have any issues with it. Thank you for explaining all the tips in this video.
Hi bro, I am also technician. I have faced all those situations and you explained them well. Good video!
This is how you make a great instructional video 👏
Thank you adding sounds. Extremely helpful and smart
Thanks so much for these videos! 💛
Amazing vided reduces my fear about AC, I watched other your videos , they are educational. Thanks a lot.
Thank you
Thanks a bunch! Number three confirmed my suspicions.
I wish I saw your video this morning. I just had a second AC guy come and look at my helicopter sounding air handler. (The first guy recommended a total $8K replacement.) The 2nd guy took 10 seconds to figure it was just a vibration! He literally just held the drain pan with his hand and it stopped. He figured out it needed a tightened of a few screws and it stopped. If I heard your story about the picture frame leaning on the furnace sooner I might have figured it out. Well worth $140 though, instead of a new AC unit!
This was impressive! Thank you.
You are incredible, Jay. Thank you!
Thank you James! I appreciate you stopping by, have a phenomenal weekend!!
I love your detail and kind explanation. Thanks a lot..
Thank You
Thank you so much! I just found that the top screws of my AC were all loose and after tightening them up, it is quiet as new now.
Very informative 👏
Thank you for sharing

Excellent info 🏌️
Thank you for a very informative video
Thank you so much
great competent guide
You are the best, thanks again!
Thank you for all the info most helpful!😊
Jay, you have the sound effects down perfectly. Also with a great explanation of what causes those sounds and the remedies to correct and fix the noises. When cleaning a unit do you ever use a coil cleaner with muriatic acid? My self I like using a mild spray bottle of a cleaner of Clean and green or mean and green cleaner. Then back flush removing the top cover and fan. I love that hamburger joke another good one you aced it again. LOL
Good to see you Clayton my friend! Glad you liked the video and the joke. 😄 I actually never use coil cleaner on condenser coils and most techs I know don't either. Some of those cleaners can be corrosive to the coil and in most cases using just water is more than enough. 🤷♂️ But as long as the coil gets cleaned, either way is good. But if you like the coil to be spotless than a coil cleaner sure does help with that 😎👍👍
Thank you for all examples, as well
You are welcome! Glad you liked the examples! 👌👌
Great job !! good info
Thank you for the noise samples the compresor blanket is what i need , its the exact same noise
Excellent video!
Thanks man this video was super helpful

You bet! Thanks for stopping by Ken, have a fantastic weekend!
Your videos my friend are amazing thank you so much
Wow love the video and references
Awesome video! Great information and sounds included are so helpful. Very well done and informative video. Just saved us from a hot and miserable summer, and all we needed was new thermostat batteries! ( No one else we spoke with made that suggestion) I don't usually leave comments to videos, but you saved us so much!! Thank you! Thank You, Thank You!
I love all your reasons, but there is one very important one that you didn’t mention - this one should be done before anything else : make sure the outside unit is level. If the packing around the fan shaft is worn, this will create space between the fan shaft and the packing, which could result in a swinging of the fan, creating squeaks and an uneven fan sound. If a A/C unit has been sitting on patio stones for many years, patio stones will sink into the ground, creating a low side and high side of your A/C unit and your fan shaft will be rubbing on one side, instead of moving freely, creating noise. Every few years, I take a level and measure it, if it’s low on one side, I shim it up so it’s level with the other side. Gravity and leveling makes every machine work better.
Very good pointer, thank you for taking the time to explain that good sir, much appreciated!
I had this problem- the pad outside had sunk making the unit a surging sound - I wedged 2x4 sections in the lower corner under the unit.. resolved
If it's only loud but not noisy, no problem.
If it is uneven but on a 8 inch thick slab how do you rectify this?
@@mysticwine Mmm-hmmm.... 😮
😂
Good video and thanks for putting in the sounds.
How can be the man when you’re the man. 🤙🏼
The brick method is my go to. It works.
You always make my Saturdays go better ... Very good tips and well explained as usual ... And yes I've met Patty many, many times 🤣😂😅 Aloha 1st family of the big island ...

Thanks Tony! I appreciate you stopping by, have a magnificent weekend brother!
Thanks Jake my problem was number #7. I had to order the compressor blanket that you recommended. I used your link.
Glad you were able to figure it out! Let us know how well the compressor blanket works.
You are the best!!!😁
Took my cover off and added oil to the shaft. Did this yesterday, running smooth.. it was very loud and vibrating.. I used a synthetic high temperature oil, Blaster Multi max from the Home Depot..
I like your accent.. I love your attitude.. Great stuff
Thank you! 🙂 Glad you liked the video and the accent!
Another great one ☝️ 👍👍👍
Thank you Harry! 🙂👍 Have a fantastic weekend my friend!
Great job
Thanks Michael! Good to see you stop by, have a marvelous weekend as always! 🤜🤛
I had the squealing condenser motor issue last year on my MILLER package ac unit and we we're actually able to get the motor ordered and installed in less than 48 hours from the time the squealing started
Outstanding videos! Wish you were in my area.
