Air Conditioner Noisy and Loud

  • Is your air conditioner really noisy, loud, screeching, rattling, grinding, or hissing? The compressor or condenser fan sounds like a jet engine or a helicopter? Perhaps the contactor is buzzing up a storm. In this video I go over 14 reasons why an AC may be very noisy inside or outside while the unit is running. This is not an extensive list so if you know something I missed or have a correction to anything I said, I would love to see you in the comments section! Here is the sound blanket link I promised to add to the description:

    This survey of 15 condenser noise problems is Brilliant. Not only does Jay clearly describe each noise and its possible cause, but the video is seamlessly edited to show the defect and repair it! This young mechanic is great. I should know because I had a D-1 license myself from 1981 to 1990 and was a fairly good technician, but this fellow is better!

    This morning my wife and I thought for sure our AC unit was on the way out. I watched this video when I got home and then went outside to check it out. Turns out the fan motor screws that hold it it to the shroud were a full turn loose, all 4 of them! Tightened them up and it’s as quiet as can be. Thanks so much!

    I had a loud grinding noise coming from the condenser fan motor.Not a screeching noise and the motor turned freely with power disconnected. It would not do this all the time. Checked everything that you mentioned. The motor was a two speed Emerson motor. After many hours of checking it turned out to be a defective circuit board fan speed controller located inside the AC unit( Comfortmaker twenty years old). I bypassed this circuit board and installed a short jumper wire so the fan motor would work on high speed only and it works perfect. No more noise. This circuit board is no longer available anywhere. With 92 degrees outside I`am getting getting 53 degrees inside at top of furnace duct work before going in to main duct that feeds the house. I`am a retired electric utility service technician. Thanks so much for all your great videos!!!

      @@WordofAdviceTV The wiring diagram on the inside of the AC access cover saved the day to help trace this problem down. It showed what wires fed the high and low speed on the fan motor and the circuit board. I just removed and taped the low speed connector and jumper the high speed connector to the AC feed. Circuit board has been disconnected.

So, I put those washers under the screws and it worked great. It also reduced vibration. Now I can put the brick back in the sidewalk. Thanks for the tips.

    Great list, should be required viewing for all A/C owners. Could save them a lot of money. One thing you could mention is the noise from a defrost cycle when it's a heat pump kind running in heating mode and outside temps are getting low. First time I heard that and it happened two or even three times in a row I was freaked out. But it's apparently quite normal and it's protecting the coils from freezing.

    I wish I saw your video this morning. I just had a second AC guy come and look at my helicopter sounding air handler. (The first guy recommended a total $8K replacement.) The 2nd guy took 10 seconds to figure it was just a vibration! He literally just held the drain pan with his hand and it stopped. He figured out it needed a tightened of a few screws and it stopped. If I heard your story about the picture frame leaning on the furnace sooner I might have figured it out. Well worth $140 though, instead of a new AC unit!

    Jay, you have the sound effects down perfectly. Also with a great explanation of what causes those sounds and the remedies to correct and fix the noises. When cleaning a unit do you ever use a coil cleaner with muriatic acid? My self I like using a mild spray bottle of a cleaner of Clean and green or mean and green cleaner. Then back flush removing the top cover and fan. I love that hamburger joke another good one you aced it again. LOL

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good to see you Clayton my friend! Glad you liked the video and the joke. 😄 I actually never use coil cleaner on condenser coils and most techs I know don't either. Some of those cleaners can be corrosive to the coil and in most cases using just water is more than enough. 🤷‍♂️ But as long as the coil gets cleaned, either way is good. But if you like the coil to be spotless than a coil cleaner sure does help with that 😎👍👍

    I love all your reasons, but there is one very important one that you didn’t mention - this one should be done before anything else : make sure the outside unit is level. If the packing around the fan shaft is worn, this will create space between the fan shaft and the packing, which could result in a swinging of the fan, creating squeaks and an uneven fan sound. If a A/C unit has been sitting on patio stones for many years, patio stones will sink into the ground, creating a low side and high side of your A/C unit and your fan shaft will be rubbing on one side, instead of moving freely, creating noise. Every few years, I take a level and measure it, if it’s low on one side, I shim it up so it’s level with the other side. Gravity and leveling makes every machine work better.

    I had the squealing condenser motor issue last year on my MILLER package ac unit and we we're actually able to get the motor ordered and installed in less than 48 hours from the time the squealing started
