      He's too smart to be a mechanic. He's not going to wrench on stuff, he's going to be an engineer and create it.

    I learned a trick from an old school mechanic today. He took a piece of wood doweling and placed it behind the pulleys then bent it up to his ear while keeping a finger on the end so you don't stab yourself. You can hear the difference between a smooth pulley and a pulley that may have a bearing going out. I thought the issue was a jacked up valve from where it sounded like the issue was, but it was the idler pulley, and didn't even break out any tools to diagnose it.

    Don't forget to shim the clutch plate. It's got to be correct clearance or you'll end up with either locked pully(runs constant), or too much clearance ( won't run a/c pump). I know. 30 year honda technician.

    Hi thanks for the A/C system tips.
    Maybe this is the same for someone else's rig.
    I have a 1996 Tahoe 5.7L with A/C, single belt system. Belt is good and snug. I get a steady and loud squealing noise when the truck is idling AND the A/C or defrost is on. If I turn the A/C on with it running above 1,500 rpms it will not squeal unkess I let the RPMs fall back down to near-idle speed. But if I turn on A/C and then increase RPMs it keeps squealing.
    The compressor clutch will turn easily by hand when truck is off, but it's not loose. It turns but won't spin after I push it or anything like that. No oil or anything wet around the compressor. Blows cold air. Squeal stops immediately when knob turns vents off Defrost or A/C button is turned off. And returns immediately when activated again.
    I also noted my Battery Gauge drops from 14 volts to 11.5 volts when the truck A/C compressor clutch or belt squeals. Almost like the whole pulley system is being slowed by the A/C engaging.
    I'm going to ohm test the clutch to make sure it reads 2ohm or higher, but other than that, what can I try to verify what's bad?
    Should I spray a little light oil like WD40 on the front of the A/C clutch? One guy did that online and it stopped his squeal, but that was a different make vehicle.
    Much thanks!

    I have a 93 Toyota pickup. The 22-RE on these pickups tend to get a strange idle loping at about 190K miles. The diagnoses is all over the place. I ripped the top end apart and replaced the gasket, bolts, timing chain, water pump, etch. Issue is still there. Issue maybe in valves in the vacuum system of emissions system. Diagnosing is an issue. Also, it has been to a few mechanics who couldn't fix it per the previous owner.

    My 2012 Honda Accord makes the exact same noise and it's been driving me nuts. I spun the pulleys and determined it's the compressor clutch pulley. I would think though that since the bearing stops spinning when the clutch engages, it'd go quiet. But all it does is get a little quieter.

    Can you recommend a good floor jack and stand? Thanks.

    • @EyeOnAiman
      @EyeOnAiman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My dad likes the Pittsburgh aluminium racing jackstand from Harbor Freight tools, they're very light & durable. We have 6 of them. We used to have the steel ones but they're too heavy. As for the Floor jack, the 3-ton low profile Pittsburgh or Daytona Rapid pump would be recommended. Don't buy the 1.5 or 2 ton ones, they don't go as high and when you release the lock the car goes down too quickly...

    • @lespaul36
      @lespaul36 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the pulley or clutch for the AC. At worst it maybe the compressor going out. Keep in mind that the AC being on does pulls harder on the belt so it could also be the idler pulley. If there is no noise with it off, maybe not the idler pulley. If you fixed this since the comment, I would love to know the findings.

    • @lespaul36
      @lespaul36 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kristiemelendez7188 Mine did the same thing. I removed the drive belt and spun each pulley. The only one with issue is the idler pulley. I had to order the entire tension arm and am picking it up later today. The extra stress on the idler pulley when the AC is running is probably what is causing it. Mine sounded like my valves were knocking.
