Not many of my mates play golf and those that do dont play comps. I love playing comps and enjoy playing with random people. Helps me get to know other members at my club too.
But to be honest, I'm only out to compete against myself and the course. I don't play matchplay. Generally only Stableford, Stroke etc with a view to try and "reduce" my handicap by beating the course. ;)

I’ve always enjoyed playing with better players whether that be in competitions or a friendly knock about. I try to beat them or at least keep up with them, I feel it makes me play a bit better.

I play on a flighted AM tour in the states for 3 seasons now. At first wasn't sure how I would like it. I love it!!! It's the only "athletic" competition I can do in my mid 40's that won't put me in the hospital. Playing with different golfers at different tournaments definitely gets you out of your comfort zone and I think makes you a better player. I was grinding to much early on in competition and now have learned to enjoy the people and courses so much more. Great content!!!

Great insight, start playing comps last year, and really enjoy it now after the initial nerves. The comment about just taking the plunge is so true, and so is knowing which members take it a little to seriously. Thanks for the great entertainment you and the gang provide.

How to zone out from other: go to the local driving range. Look for the spot next to the people who are there just for fun and being really loud (like families, groups of young people and such). Get the spot right beside them and work on keeping your swing and routine despite the noise and distraction going around. It did wonders for me.

Competition golf is about beating myself (improving handicap). So I'm never nervous as my results only reflect me/or impact me. I enjoy meeting new people, seeing how they play, shot selection they use, speed of play etc. It's all just fun really

Anyone looking to improve at this game has to play in comps to get their handicap down.
Love these conversations and insights. Excellent stuff.

I play in a society and we are a competitive group and I use/watch your vlogs of courses I'm going to play to get an idea of the course. Also love a comp as always been a competitive type of character

Playing with friends is about the banter, having fun, and stress free golf. Competitions on the other hand when you play badly are soul destroying. But when you beat your handicap, maybe even win something now that is difficult to beat. I would miss the morning butterflies, the marking of my chosen balls, the cleaning of my clubs. Time spent thinking about the course and how you may approach playing it. Those final couple of putts and the walk to the 1st tee, I would miss that very much.

I play comps purely because I love playing the game and enjoy the challenge of being the best I can on the day and lowering my handicap. Not a great fan of Stapleford but still play it, and prefer medal and match play. There's another TH-camr in the Sunningdale field Bruh … I might even pop along and watch ….no pressure.

Like this. I had not played comps until last June, got my handicap,of 19 and took the plunge. Nice group at my club and most are friendly, made it easier. Want to get to 16 though by end of summer.👍👍

I´ve only played in a few comps, not really au fait with the various different formats of comp golf. We have a stableford comp once a year with my company golf society, which is ok, but often takes over 5 hours to go round as we have members who dont play regularly or at all. And played in a texas scramble 4 ball last season, but got grouped with members of the club who weren´t driving well, so used 12 of my tee shots, but then found it really frustrating to be pulled back more than 50 metres after hitting a perfect drive to less than 30 yards from the green, because we had to play for another players tee shot position because we´d already used all of mine, resulting in a duffed pitch shot and missed green. So in those respects, playing in those kind of comps can hinder your game rather than enhance it. SO yeah, social golf is definitely preferable for me :)

Always play local club comps much prefer comps or playing mates to playing by my self can still remember standing over putt on the last hole to win the money (all of $5 ) for the first time and shaking .Did make the putt that was nearly 25 years ago

The responding to score definitely helps me. I play off a 10 and last week I had a horrible start, was 6 over through 5 already. Ended up shooting a 9 over 81 because I was determined to recover my round

Don't play in comps. DO keep coffee in fridge!! 👍
Last year I tried it, playing the Myrtle Beach World Amateur, and I got no enjoyment from it whatsoever. The worst experience I ever had playing golf since the time I pulled a tee shot left on the 9th hole at Dyker Beach, over the fence, down the street, and through a conveniently open door, straight into the lobby of Victory Memorial Hospital.

I’ve only played in work”s society matches against other regions when selected or in our Spring and Autumn meetings (Stableford). Enjoyed the challenge and if paired with someone supportive the regional matches (usually 4 ball match play) were a great opportunity to play further afield. Sometimes not having an “official” handicap wasn’t appreciated by all, because obviously if you claim to be off 18 but play out of your skin (you know when putts drop!) and score 12 over ... you’re a bandit!! Hoping to play more this year, but nothing wrong with Muppet Tour competition amongst friends...

I think the key with comps for your average golfer is managing your own expectations. How often do you play to or beat your handicap? No very for most of us. So if you drop a few strokes early on just accept it and try to play the best you can for the rest of the round. You never know what you may score on the holes to come. So today I shot 11 points on the first 8 holes which I was a little disappointing, but then parred the 9th which is SI .1 and ended the round with 34 points. Not a winning score but decent enough. Just enjoy it - it's a bit of fun. Your life doesnt depend on it.

I just signed up to play in my first amateur city tournament. The director/club pro said I could pair up with my buddy first day but second day goes by seeding which is understandable. I have no problem playing with duffers like me but I might be a little intimidated on the second day playing with a serious player. That said I shoot in the 90's so I will probably be paired up with another duffer like me on day two so not too worried about it. I don't play a lot so I am trying to get better and play more and I just turned senior age so we will see how it goes.

  • @pdub7562

Get involved in Captains Evenings if your club has them, good way to get used to playing with people you may not know and have a bit of pressure even though the comps, if you can call them that, mean nothing.
I'm not a member anywhere, I cant commit to playing every weekend to justify the subs, but that is what I miss most, the nerves in a stableford, then more nerves in a medal. You learn a lot about yourself and you get better.

I love playing matchplay when you know you can get in your opponents head. Thats is a skill in its own rite simply because it can dictate an out come of a match. So much so it became a topic at county level.
Will there be a Vlog of sunning dale before you play there?

Love competing but also love the social rounds too - that said there is always a sense of satisfaction if I beat my buddy! I always know my score and those of my partners for the day - lucky enough to keep numbers in my head plus always mark an overall card - if you're going to win you first have to beat the guys you're playing with!

Coach nearly put a hole in the projector screen! #DrivingGod. I've done comps in other things in my younger days - definitely is the only way to really move to the best level you can be, if what you do involves doing it with or against others. But I took up golf for pure enjoyment. I love playing with other people, but I really don't need the angst that club comp seems to bring out in some. I don't even have a handicap. Plus weekends are the only time me and my wife get completely to ourselves (we both work 2 hours away and commute to and from each day).

    It takes bottle to play in a qualifying comp, you know your handicap could be affected and with card in hand that is pressure - holes 1-18. It will result in the following;
You will know exactly where your game is at
    It will motivate your practice
It will give you a base line score
It will place you relative to your members
Eventually it will be FUN as it really challenges you to concentrate on your score
Finally when you return to your "bounce" game you will skin your mates!!

A lot of what you say rings true for me. If I am playing a club comp and I don't get out of the blocks well then I almost give up, and just muck around with my mates. That means ending up shooting 80 when could have potentially ground out a 76. Also means handicap is probably higher than the level I can play at. Alternatively I always played well in matchplay events, against people I don't know, where I can push to the end.

I’m playing in our 2 day Open tournament this weekend in NZ.
I’m also 3 months into being Captain, so have been organising and doing the draw etc... and with all my Greta committee and other volunteers will be running the tournee.
I’m already finding that hard to balance, meaning I’ve done virtually no practice, which as a 5 handicapper is NOT the best prep!!,
Oh and I’ve got surgery on my elbow, right after the tourney too....
Any advise for that lot Mark.....or anyone......
Lol- write off the score and enjoy providing a tournee for the others I guess!!,

I love playing Comps! I have 11 FSGA (FL ST Golf Assoc) and 12 Hm Club Comps this year. I will be playing the FSGA Tour with people I don't know. I don't care, Because i'm not there to impress them Im there to play my game and beat the course and hopefully the field. However, I can lose to the field and still win because I'll play courses I'd normally never play and I'll work out the course management, fine tune my skills. And Im sure I'll meet some great people too...I win if i lose and win if i win! (Happy go lucky? or Glass half full personality?) :-)
My home Club will be with the people I grind out with day to day wk to wk. I Love those old bastards! (We are Retired SpecOPs 1st Air Commandos) They are tough, proud and fight to the finish!

I enjoy competing purely for the social side of it. I moved to the area that I currently live in and didn’t know anyone at the golf club so playing in the comps has been a great way to meet people.
An issue that I have is a two or three hole blow up. I’m a six handicapper but was scratch in my teens and I can comfortably be level or maybe one or two under for 15/16 holes but will have a couple of holes where I make doubles and triples that sees me come in around handicap. These holes are as likely to be the first two as the last two or anything in between and are often consecutive with no relevance to how hard the holes are but I feel like I hit shots without putting any thought into them and I come off the hole wondering what on earth I was thinking during that hole. I warm up and prepare correctly, work on my fitness and pay attention to my nutrition on the course so do not believe that not being ready or getting fatigued has any effect. Any thoughts or tips would be most welcome...

Other than potentially having to follow the rules (assuming you play mates rules that are different to standard) I argue nothing should change. Any change you make is external to the game and it is a mental one. Why is it different? It actually isn't. It is the same game using your same clubs and you still have the same strengths and weaknesses in your game. The comp doesn't make it different, you do and this will only impact your performance. Why think of it differently at all? When you play with mates you are relaxed and there for fun. I suggest the only difference here is that your mates might not be there. Go for fun and enjoy it.

If you want to be a better player, you have to compete, if you're just happy to have a social knock then don't be disappointed if you don't improve.

I normally play to the level of those around me at all sports, that's why I prefer playing with better players. If I'm playing with someone who's duffing every shot then I start doing the same!

I don't care for handicapped comps. Tournaments used to be 2 day events, lowest scores in round 1 comprise the Champ flight, others play in 1st or 2nd flights. Merchants donate some prizes for advertisement, entry fees go to gift cards to be redeemed in Pro shop, or the pro may want dump some old inventory.

Maybe player's don't like to play in competitions because it kinda tells you where you are in your game. Some people like to think their better than they really are.
