Last year I was averaging over 120 on most courses and sliced my driver so much, it make a boomerang jealous. Rick's videos have not only got me hitting straight (most of the time) but I broke 100 for the first time ever this past weekend. Thanks for the awesome tips Rick!
0:45 - Above your feet 3:59 - Ball below your feet 6:40 - Uphill lie 9:44 - Downhill lie I appreciate your teaching and explanations. They've been incredibly useful to me. Timestamps for people looking for a quick reference.
Rick is killing the Swing instruction industry. Like the Magician who gives all the secrets away....and we thank you. AS for the hanging lie, ball below our feet. My opinion; the reason we mis-hit that shot. Once you start your back swin'g, You brain knows you're out of balance, and tells your thigh muscles "Stand up". I give Rick ton of credit. He's teaching and not worrying about where the ball is landing...he's showing the good, the bad and ugly...
I love how you explain every shots , even when sometimes you're shots don't go exactly where you want them to ! For us less than perfect players , this makes us feel really good ! We know exactly what you are trying to say and understand what you are trying to show us ! We understand that when we try , it's not going to be perfect, the first time ! My nemesis has always been the downhill lies , you explained it perfectly , how it needs to be played! Thank you , Patrick
Next time I'm about to make a shot, I would ask myself how Rick would do it and how he'd explain it. I believe sometimes we don't plan the shot and that ends up pretty bad most of the time
I'm left handed, so I love it when you talk "front" and "back" instead of left and right. Front and back help me understand the tips better. Love your tips.
Rick I must say this is one of the most useful videos you’ve ever made. I struggle with at least two of the four scenarios and will ingrain your four types of shots. Wonderful.
I have always struggled with ball above and below my feet and you explained the set up in a very clear way, played 9 today and put it to use and noticed a huge improvement. Thanks Rick!
Excellent video, Rick. While discussing The Masters, my 8-year old said, "I only know 3 golfers. Tiger Woods, Rick Shiels, and my dad." You're in good company!
One of your best videos. This is what every golfer faces. A golf course is not a driving range and each lie is different. But the basis of the advise about these 4 types of lie are so good. Thank you, Rick.
Rick, best lesson I've seen on this topic and one which most weekend duffers have no clue about. One other thing I was taught about downhill lies is that you should take some practice swings to see where they bottom out. My first couple are always too far behind the ball even if I think I'm set up properly. Would explain some comments here about people chunking shots. Keep up the good work.
I love that you zoomed into the green so we could see where the ball settled... That's one thing I wish these golf videos would do... Especially when clubs are reviewed
Hi Rick , would I be correct in saying that additionally , on an uphill lie , that the ball should be moved slightly up in your stance, and on a downhill lie , the ball should be moved slightly back in your stance to adapt to the changing point where the club bottoms out in each of those situations ..? ...IMO ...LOL
This is a great video. I play a course in North Carolina where literally half the time, if you drive the ball in the fairway, you have some sort of sloping lie. But on the driving range, all the practice areas we can hit from have an absolutely flat lie. It would be great if courses like mine would put a small hill on the driving range where we can practice hitting from a sloping lie.
Great tips. I keep forgetting the direction the ball goes on uphill versus downhill lies. I'm printing off these tips on a card and sticking on my golf cart so I remember.. Age makes us forget, we'll at least me. Love to see more of this style of golf tips on the channel. The graphics really help and the reasoning behind it. Thanks a bunch Rick. My game has seriously improved since I started watching your channel last year. Keep it up!
Dr Izzy Justice says anyone after a lesson forgets 90% of it, but recalling it at night before sleep helps reinforce. Or write it down as you have done. So not necessarily an age thing.
The best advice I have received yet, I've improved a lot and no longer nervous on approaching and having the correct mindset and how I want the ball to move.
The 14 th hole at my course - if your tee shot is to the right you end up with the ball well above your feet, 190 yards to the green - for years I have either pulled it left, or aimed right and the ball stayed right! Then one day after watching this video I managed to put my ball onto the green with my second shot by standing closer to the ball - WOW, then when we got to the eighteenth work was being carried out on the path, so we had a temp/teeing ground a 100 yards further forward, but on a slope (ball below your feet) I got down low as I could and my tee shot hut the green! All in one day WOW- It's all your fault Rick, thank you so much!
Rick, you're down to earth and comfortable in your own skin. I like the fact that you are not superhuman; you're not the one-armed robot that engineers built to test clubs and golf balls. It always hits the ball straight; you don't. This was a good, informative show for uphill, downhill, etc lies; it wasn't about those compound lies where a golfer sees downhill - sidehill lies. However, I learned a lot and I enjoyed learning from someone who hits balls like "The Golf-a-holics," buit doesn't talk like he hits 'em like Ben Hogan. You have 1.28M subscribers because we can relate to you. You're one of us & you never talk down to us. That's big. Also, you are almost as good at hitting the stray & woodsy shots as Arnold Palmer. I think that's because you're a creative not a determined plodder like "Sweet Swing" Peter Finch. Finch will hit two straight balls with perfect form and wind up ten yards shy of the green. From there, he's lucky to two putt. You, on the other hand, will hit some "Wild Kingdom", off into the jungle shot off the tee, and then, you'll curve a ball off a branch leaving yourself with a birdie putt. While I admire & envy Peter's swing, I like that you can recover from your screw-ups. To me, that's more the sign of a master teacher than a guy who doesn't have the brains to aim at the flag instead of the edge of the green. Cheers.
Great video Rick, will be really helpful. One question - I note you don’t mention ball position at all...I had been told this needed to change but you feel it should be exactly as it would be on a flat lie?
This is the best golf lesson video I've seen in a long time In depth instruction on uneven lies. A common problem with most golfers. Great video Rick. Hats off to you.
Watched your video yesterday and played at a very undulating course this morning. Chipped in for birdie on a par 3 from a 20ish yard uphill lie! Cheers Rick
Rick as always a great video. Had to put my dog of 17 years down today due to cancer. Thanks for taking my mind off what was inevitable for a few minutes. Once again many thanks and stay safe and healthy. Pete from Australia
Great advice bee doing all these things for some years now and been asked by friends how a play those lies so well👍🏻 Only thing is I never get a lie like you did in the video😂😂😂😂👍🏻
Rick, I watched this video just a couple of weeks ago and have to say THANKS!! For a long time, my nemesis has been any shot with the ball below my feet. I always seemed to either push, shank or hit a big pull hook. I used bent my knees but once I added the Lean Forward part of the setup it's totally transformed these shots for me. I have been striking them great AND they're actually going at my target. Thanks again!
Mills Jank everyone in golf is very understanding about the fact that it’s a sport for everyone from beginners to pros. You are off to a great start watching Rick and learning his course etiquette. How does somebody dislike this video? People talk about hitting better on the driving range then out on the course and part of it is because of the up, down, low and high lies. If anything this video will give you more confidence out playing 18. Don’t see what there is to dislike..
Great lesson on battling the not perfect lies. It also calls you out to understand your typical carry distances on the "base" iron and go up/down in clubs depending on up/down hill. Likewise when on those ball above your feet/below your feet moments how to properly address the same. Funny thing is I have a small ditch that is regularly mowed behind the home that allows me to work on these shots. Hi again Rick from Shetland. I think this has to be one of your best tutorials yet. Playing on the courses in Shetland this lesson has been very helpful
Another great video full of tips to help on those tough uneven lies. However,,, on the up and down hill lies you should widen your stance a little for stability. Rick did so without mentioning it. He is so good he does it out of habit without thinking about it, and it's a good habit to get into on those shots.
I really love Rick's videos, they are simple, not overly complex like other instructional videos. Golf is a mental game and you take yourself out of the game when you approach the ball and try to think about the 10-20 steps and then shank a slot because you're not swinging freely. Get to the basics and make the tweaks after you become better golfer and watch the 10-20 step videos. I recently got back into golf and got the golf bug. Thanks Rick for your useful instructional videos!
Most mid and high handicappers (me) being part of that struggle with this. This is a very simple and well explained drill for different lies, again Rick thanks for helping out.
Thanks Rick, I watched this video and applied it to my round of golf today, seriously helped me to break 100 for the first time with a 96! you legend , you make this content easy to apply and use to improve my gameplay
Ball above your feet.. play one club long, choke down a bit, put heel of club on ball and try to hit it with heel of club on downswing, gravity will drop the club down when you swing and you will hit the sweet spot of the club. Ball below your feet play one club long, set up with toe of club on ball and try to hit with toe. Gravity will move club down the hill and you will hit sweet spot of club.

Thanks Rick, I watched this video and applied it to my round of golf today, seriously helped me to break 100 for the first time with a 96! you legend , you make this content easy to apply and use to improve my gameplay
I always like Rick's videos. Well not always, only when Rick tells me to like it. Keep up the good work
Just tried an evenroll putter today. Jeffie likie. Was impressed. I felt the club work with me. Also liked TM TP blade.
Thank you! I've been missing the body position part my whole life. Hopefully I'll be able to hit these lies much better now.
Omg, you saved me..I have had so much problem with this. Great simplification, you're the man!
This video spoke to me. I always have an awkward lie, even in the fairway. Can’t wait to experiment with these tips!
Great lesson! Will try it tomorrow. Hope i remember it all .Thank you. Didnt mention ball position.
Best video I have seen on these four lies. Well done.
Just got a lesson in down hill iron shots. Good part seeing this is my instructor is spot on 👍🏼
Rick, one of the best Videos you ever made, from time to time I watch it again 👍
My distance off the tee is shorter, dead pull left. Thanks Danny. I like your videos. Easy to understand.
Very helpful, things we know but they’re organized and easy to reflect on, I shared with 5 people.
