    Beautiful painting Steve! I love this idea of painting a spontaneous wash and then making something out of the shapes :)

  • @MDCampbell
    @MDCampbell 7 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    And this is exactly what led me to your channel, kept me coming back, and continues to inspire and sincerely amaze me. A skill like this takes many years, a lot of practice, and the intuition of a war horse to successfully pull off. I have a different method, which is so rudimentary in comparison, yet still effective for my needs. My mistake, for years, was not painting on an angle to let the water collect. That you mention Bob Ross is kind of funny, as to me, you're the BR of watercolor. lol! Great demonstration and really appreciate the narrative along with it. For new subscribers, this is gold. Pure gold. Thank you, Steve! :)

      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      What a awesomely generous comment Mark! Thanks my friend, made my day! Yes, well rudimentary approaches are often deceiving in their simplicity. Reducing something to its essentials and maintaining strong visual elements is so much tougher than people realize as I communicated in my post on your recent video. Bob Ross is such an interesting icon isn't he? He was loved by so many who weren't even artists but who loved his demeanor. His techniques and style were nothing without that. I always hoped that if nothing else, I could connect, even a fraction as well, with my viewers on a personal level while still being myself. Not being able to do that was my greatest fear going into this TH-cam thing. Anyway, thanks for the amazing vote of confidence.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Just to note, you have succeeded in connecting with viewers on a personal level, and totally managed to still be yourself, in every way. It's what's made, in my opinion, your channel a gem among many, many stones. :)

    i wanted to try hot-press so I ironed a sheet of cold-press Arches.......it worked I think. Smoothed the texture without taking away tooth. I was shocked. btw this was all me. I was burning some Sunday Delight and I had a thought " I bet i could hot press some cold press with an iron. Well I had a texture-less end product that still had tooth and I am certain that I did not delineate the size ability to hold pigment. High times! So I used it and had fun and more Sunday Delight /wink

    I feel like you are carving out the trees as a sculptor would carve out a figure. Think I learned a lot about your approach to painting these spontaneous works by seeing how the ink was used then refined with a little more color. So appreciate your sharing.

    Interesting shapes.....
    Bush shape....
    What is wrong with my brain that I cannot see anything in that mess.
    Then comes the ink and my brain goes " ahhhhhh...there it is"
    And then the second paint layer and my brain goes "whaaaaat?.....there was no darn hint of anything in those negative spaces and now there is! Ok......Time to sell any art supplies I have as clearly I have zero imagination unless it slaps me in the face"
    Clearly I am not an artist but a dabbler...😭

    Man....I love how "easy" u not only make it look but show us it is! I'm sure that it takes skill an knowledge to make some this nice, but the idea that almost anyone can make something similar to this that looks great is just inspiring! I'm just getting into watercolor, purchased a Cottman set and a masters touch half pan set that had a few more colors and I'm pretty happy with the bbn performance so far..... now i wouldn't expect anything i make to last....but at this point, i dont think i want anything to last lol. So much fun. I've always had a love for ink, i could just slowly color a whole page black with a good pen lol. But adding g watercolor over top or after.....now my true love can play too!?! I'm in

    I see a notification from Mind Of Watercolor and my day is made.. Then I see that it's a Spontaneous painting and I'm over the moon! These are my absolute favorite videos you do.. Been practicing them myself without much luck but haven't given up. Any extra tips you have for these would be much appreciated, thanks ! Blessings to you and yours from your NC neighbor and fan, Stacy Hannon..

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The only tips are don't mess with the initial spontaneous washes too much. The more you add water, paint, colors and such the more chance you have of everything just making one big messy puddle of nothing. If its a landscape make sure to keep some semblance of landscape organization, some upright shapes for trees and bushes and some flatter ground or water like shapes. Once the initial washes are dry look for shapes you can define further. What does something look like or what can a shape be the start of? Then start darkening the shape itself or negative painting around it to define it more. It takes a good bit of comfort and familiarity with landscape and drawing from your artistic bank of mental images. That just takes time and practice.

      The Mind of Watercolor Absolutely great advice, thank you!!! I will put it to good use. Thanks to you I am now an M. GRAHAM Girl.. And Marty Owings is the reason I really like the Stonehenge papers. You two make a great team. Have you ever thought about doing a live painting demo together? Maybe you could both paint at the same time, using one subject, and compare notes on the results? And the audience could paint along.. I was also wondering if you would be having any more Hobby Lobby events or anything similar in the near future? I am only about 30 minutes away from where you did the last one but I ended up getting sick the day before and couldn't go. I have a strict rule about staying out of public placed when sick because it isn't fair to pass it on to others. One of goals is to be able to watch you paint in person.. (Hopefully without getting star struck lol) My family knows that I have in have a few favorite artists, you, Dave Usher, Marty Owings, Alan Owens, Liron, and Callen Shaub.. to name so few. I have a painting from Dave Usher and Liron in my home. I hope to add one of yours soon also.. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I know you are a very busy guy.. Hope you have a Blessed week.. Stacy Hannon. P.S. You really do favor Robert Dinero a lot. :-)

    I know this is years old, but it's new to me, and I have to say these spontaneous pieces always leave me shaking my head! I watch the blotches of paint, speckles, and water, and each time I think "this one isn't going to come out as good as the other ones I saw."
    It does.
    It's gorgeous.
    The next thing I do will be a stab at a spontaneous landscape! Thanks for opening my eyes to this approach.

    Thanks for the demo, loose is possibly where painting will have to go for me. I have been diagnosed with Lupus and Scerloderma. Only the good Lord knows how much it will effect me and my ability to paint. This is really something I need to explore after inktober wraps up. I did see that painting that Liron did of you and Reese, thought that was pretty neat. Hope you and Marty keep doing the videos as you all have time. Be well. Essie/luv4art33

    • @cassiescreations9828
      @cassiescreations9828 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Essie Tangle The best advice I can give you is to keep moving - don't ever stop even when you think you can't take another step, find a way to be in motion but at the same time, know your limits too. It is a very personal journey - what works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa. If you don't have a support system, find a "therapist" - someone to talk to. Painting will be great for you, by the way - it calms the mind that calms the soul that calms the body and, with your medication, may even help calm the pain.

      Jessie, I'm so sorry to hear about your dxs. 😢 I have lupus, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and some more stuff (like I need any more). Anyway, I do think art will help. I started back up with art in 2001, after I became disabled in '98. Arting has given me one my best mental relief, hubby being my other one. 😉 You will have hard day's, but remember you are not alone...you have support. 🤗 Find me if you need me, I am always around. Take care of yourself and know it is ok to say "no" when you need too and to rest.

    I call this intuitive painting, and it's my favorite way to paint. I am drawing and sketching, but I love to mix up palettes and when finished, see what I can "carve out of it" with ink or gouache even. Great video. Beautiful painting and a good look at how M. Graham behaves. I will likely buy a set for myself-maybe at Christmas, haha! I have a lot of watercolors to use up for a long long time!!! I do have M Graham Tit. White Gouache. It's pretty good!

    OK, I realize I'm late to the pahdee, but I'm eating up every slurping up every juicy moment of every MoWC video I can find & almost every one leaves my heart palpitating & my senses reeling... This one resonated soooo much with me! I envisioned doing something like this when I first considered putting my foot in the watercolor pool... somehow finding a bridge between my background & training as a professional interior designer (renderings in well-behaved colored pencil & markers) & the unpredictable, mysterious, murky depths of this new-to-me medium... & here you've tacitly & stupendously given me permission to pursue my whim! Can't wait to try it out! Thank you, thank you!

    Love this! I tried one tonight, but the first thing I need to do is practice laying down paint with a one inch brush!

    Ever since I found you, I havent let you go! You are so complete in your teachings. And I trust you, in what you say. Besides you convey decense and a sense of humor. Thank you, God bless you and continue to help us.
