Great advice, even for us older girls 😊 Looking forward to the dahlia video. You are right, I've heard several flower farmers here talk about how they went bloom after cutting. I worked for a florist yrs ago, she had me cut the roses under water when they arrived.
Im having issues right now with a variety of moths that we have never had here before. They are obviously laying eggs right into the top of the area where new dahlia buds are going to come in and then the caterpillar just destroys the blooms. We’ve used pyrethrum but it isn’t even touching the sides. Ive just spent the best part of the day racing around covering all of the beds with bird mesh to stop the butterflies. Lots of people here on the south coast are reporting that this has been the worst season for bugs that we’ve ever experienced. My entire flower fields look like great big white mesh beds now :( Thankyou for the tips with cutting the zinnias, this being my first year Ive grown everything from seed including the dahlias and zinnias its been a big learning experience. Yesterday we reached almost 40 degrees here but today we are travelling at 27 and overcast. It’s been a tiring season with the constant changes in temperature each day. Thankyou for sharing about the boiling water too I had seen you doing that and for the life of me I wasn’t sure why. We’ve had our sleepers arrive today to start prepping our beds for the thousands of bulbs that have started arriving but with this weird weather Im not going to plant them in until I know the heat is finished with us. It will be wonderful if it rains tonight so that we can get a good nights sleep. Have a wonderful hump day. Cheers Theresa x
Hi Theresa, my gosh the moths sound terrible! I’ll ask Moroni about that tonight, see what they used to do about those in Mexico. This has been a tiring season, the plants feel the temp changes too it stresses them more :(
@@phaedragardeness Thankyou that would be awesome. The cucamelons from Mexico are the only plants in the vegetable garden not pitching a fit with the weather :) I even tried a garlic and chilli blend with water and sprayed that onto the rotten things and that just plumped them up and made the damned things hungrier. Ive been thinking about going to the shops and buying some sort of reeper chilli sauce and putting that into a spray bottle and giving that a go too. Anything to kill them. Ive just put peas into soak so that I can possibly plant them tomorrow morning when the rain comes (if it comes) Hopefully Moroni will have a suggestion I can try. He may think the reeper chilli sauce mixed with water into a spray bottle will be a good idea lol
Hi Phaedra. Love your youtube show. This one was really interesting & useful for me. Just a quick question. Was it only dahlias you put in boiling water, & how long do you leave them in it? I know the area you live in quite well. It's beautiful country. We have stayed in the Yackendanda caravan park several times. Heather.
Hi Heather! With our cut flowers from the farm the Dahlias are the only one we put in boiling water. I leave them in that bucket until the water cools to room temp :)
Yes you can rehydrate roses in boiling water! It’s for roses that have already drooped after picking. You cut the stems, put in boiling water for maybe 20 seconds then back into room temp water.

Hi Wende! Yes if you cut stems under water it reduces the instance of an air embolism… and they reduce water uptake.
So much great information. Thank you 🙏
Love an extra midweek video🙌🏼

Wow thanks Karen, I’m glad you liked it!
Love your videos, wondering if you could do a video on how you nurture your soil?
I love that idea thank you! It might be something I can do over winter and go over everything we currently do :)
Good informative video!

Did I hear right when you said dahlias AND roses like boiling water? 😮
