Focusing a Diode Laser Quickly - Featuring the Ortur Laser Master 2

  • Today we go through focusing a diode laser quickly. This video is featuring the Ortur Lased Master 2 as that is the laser I have. This would be the same in any adjustable laser, and you want to make sure your focal length (distance between the laser head and the material) is correct before focusing.
    **** I know there are many ways to do this, and people use different powers and colored paper, etc. This is just the way I do it when I am in a hurry and don't have my USB Microscope ready. It's important to get the laser as focused as you possible can to get the best results out of it.
    ***** Please remember to use your laser safety glasses when doing this at ANY Power!

    Nice video, however your focus is one paper thickness above the surface of the item. Now you take the paper and put it BENEATH the item, it will rise just one paper thickness up and then you have perfect focus.

    I have an Ortur LU 1-3 laser and wanted to know if you have any suggestions for focusing it. The focus knob is pretty tight to turn and takes some effort. Ortur said to put the laser from 30-35mm away from the object and focus until the smallest circle is obtained. I did that and burnt something on my tumbler and it didn't do as good as being about 60mm away and left the focus alone. Any help would be appreciated.

    Great info. However, my biggest questions are: How do I know the correct focal length for my laser? Also, how do we do this with a non-G8 lens where we have a line instead of a dot?

    • @TheEdgeofTech
      @TheEdgeofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For Ortur it is below. And with the line you do it the same way. Just as small as you can get it.
      7W 75MM
      15W 55mm
      20w 35mm

  • @tim6360
    @tim6360 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just got the LM2 20W myself and have been binging your content.
    To all interested: The new 20Ws (and 15Ws maybe according to the card I received with mine last month) have a fixed lens and z-axis adjustment. They ship with an aluminum focal length cylinder (just something to ensure your laser is the proper height above your surface). You can still fine focus slightly by pulling down on the lens though so this still applies a bit.
    Also FYI: you cannot change the lens in the newest versions so don't do like I did and buy a G8 before receiving the newest version :-P

    In your video on focusing a diode laser I notice you were able to turn the dialing knob with one finger.
    On my Ortur 15w that knob is so tight I'm not able to turn it without using pliers to grip it!!! Surely that can't be right?
    Any ideas how I can free it up ?

    I'm super new to lasers so this may be really stupid but....how do you find the focal length for the laser to set the height? I don't see anything listed on mine - Creality Falcon 10W - so is there a way to know?

    • @TheEdgeofTech
      @TheEdgeofTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a dumb question! Looks like it came with a focusing tool. They call it 3 step focusing. I saw the picture of it here: www.creality.com/products/cr-laser-falcon-laser-engraver-10w

    • @StumblingBumblingIdiot
      @StumblingBumblingIdiot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheEdgeofTech Yes, I did get that with mine also but it is only good for those certain sizes. If I want to engrave on a board that is 3/4 inches thick I don't think that step would work as the sizes listed on it are only a few MM. That is where I am confused or is it basically I should only use materials up to that max listed on the step guide? I hope I explained taht good enough. I really suck at explaining things LOL

    Thanks for this video. I have bought a G8 Focus Lens but in order to get a tiny line, I need to turn (loosen) the knob so much that it is barely attached to the module. It is so loose that I can move the "dot" on the material by 3cms by simply touching the knob.
    You say that with your G8 Lens, you leave a 72mm clearance between the module's sink and the material. But what OLM2 module are you using? 15W? 20W?

    great vid, BUT i have 1 question that is a hot topic. capped or uncapped laser diode. Lately it seems that Ortur ( like mine LM2 15 Watt) has a diode that is NOT capped with a gasfilled lens. This means that the life of the diode shortens very much. Ive issued a ticket to Ortur, but they say there is a 1 year waranty and when it is broken , i will get a new one. But nothing about un/capped diode. Maybe you ccan give answer on that. In a couple of FB-groups there are lots of discusion about.. Greetzz Fonz
