As always this is for educational/entertainment purposes in line with Fair Use. So feel free to leave feedback, discuss, and debate in the comment section!
Watch in HD! This computer is 10yrs old (my love) and it's still pushing out videos. With that being said, the video quality isn't the best. Until I get a newer system, this is what I'll be working with - but I hope my trusty potato doesn't stop you from enjoying the video.

This video was difficult to say the least. All the footage you see comes from season 1 of *HBO's Rome*, episodes 3-7! Lots of hours dedicated to it to make sure it flowed together. THIS SHOW IS INCREDIBLE and I recommend it to any fan of history. Shame that it ended in 2 seasons. Hours of episodes stuffed into 18 minutes, so there is no bonus clip :( super bummed about that but, I didn't want it to drag along.

Imagine if rome had the same budget as game of thrones. 🤔
In many respects, Rome was the precursor to GoT. HBO learned several lessons from doing the production that informed them whilst making GoT.
Unfortunately, one of those lessons was "do a half-length/half-arsed last season."
@@draco84oz that is more to blame on Dan&David (dumb and dumber) than HBO. HBO and GRRM wanted more seasons (as many as 13) but D&D thought they were better than the show and already had gigs lined up for after GoT. Gigs they fortunately lost after the debacle that was season 8. But in my honest opinion the show had been shit since season 5 and got progressively worse by the season
there's 400 years of interesting history they can dish out.
There were supposed to be 4 seasons. While writing the second season, hbo told the writers that it would be cancelled. So they had to compress 3 last seasons into 1. 😔
To be fair I think at the time Rome was incredibly high budget. The GoT of it's day really in production.

They could seriously make this into a 20 season show detailing all the history of the empire and it would never get old.
They really nailed all the historical characters with the perfect actors for this series. When I think of Caesar, Pompeii, Octavius or Mark Antony I automatically see these people.
I can never think of Caesar as anyone other than Ciaran Hinds. I was reading De Bello Gallica and in my head, the narrating voice was that of Hinds.
Cato was not portrayed by an actor that was too old and too worn out to represent the historic figure. Other senators were indeed portraired very well.

Ciaran Hinds is way too big to be Caesar. Nearly half a foot taller and far more solidly built. Caesar was probably built similar to a middleweight boxer.

Pompey was outsmarted by Caesar time and time again. When Pompey abandoned Rome he allowed Caesar to occupy it without doing any damage to the city, and start populist reforms which the lower classes loved, and wanted. Something Pompey and his allies ignored, and had no desire to do in the first place.
Thats how the show portrays it, but not the reality. Caesar was on the brink of defeat many times in the civil war, it was a brutal war. When he finally won at Pharsalus everyone was shocked

You didn't pay attention did you? Cato, Cicero, Metellus Scipio, they didn't want to leave Rome! Pompey convinced them!!! And threatened to leave them to their own resources..
You are wrong. Pompey did exactly the right thing in fleeing Rome. Caesar knew perfectly that occupying Rome was worth nothing. Pompey with his huge and powerful clients in Greece. Asia, Africa and his powerful fleet could easily blockade Rome. Caesar had only one choice : to chase Pompey as quickly as possible if he wanted to avoid the collapse of his army. If Pompey had been wise enough he would have avoided the battle and destroyed Caesar who had zero logistics easily.
Caesar: “We must win or die. Pompeii’s men have other options...”
He’s talking about Sun Tzu’s realization of the advantage smaller armies can have when they know they’re being outnumbered. When put on “death ground” where soldiers’ only options are “fight or die”, they undergo this remarkable psychological transformation where they will fight with ALL they have. And the other side that outnumbers them have the option of retreat. Nobody wants to be one of the first ones to die in a battle they’re assured they’ll win. So they don’t fight as hard. Obviously this isn’t always the case. But it DOES happen and HAS happened numerous times throughout history. This battle of Pharsalus is a good example of that. Combined with Caesar’s brilliant tactics and strategy.
What pompey failed to mention with the whole "single cohort" thing is that the entire job of Casear's outnumbered cavalry was to create enough dust and noise resisting Pompey's cavalry that they wouldn't notice the line of spearmen until they hit them. Caught by surprise by the sudden appearance of the hard counter to Cavalry right in front of them, with no formation because they were in pursuit, no time to do anything but run headlong onto the spearheads, the entire cavalry force broke, freeing Caesar to roll Pompey's line up. It was one of the greatest deceptions in te history of war.
Caesar and Pompeii would also tease the world with proto-trench warfare during their battles of military engineering. Glorious ingenuity.
@@nillynush4899 Still, nothing beats Alesia. The concept of surrounding a fort with a fort. Then your fort surrounding fort, with another fort... is just so wild. The food it must have taken to feed the army while working so hard on construction. The management and training required for even setting things up like a wheel barrel line, a tree felling team, hauling the lumber back, debarking it, digging the holes etc. It takes organization.
The Strategy that prolific in Caesar's campaigns is the building of walls in record times

I always loved the relationship between Caesar and his personal slave Posca. They always go back and forth like an old couple arguing, haha.
That this series was so expensive that they slammed six seasons into just two ist just to damn sad. This is easily on of the best series ever made, period!
The extremely compressed season 2 of Rome was infinitely better than any GoT after season 6
I agree with this. Season 7 had good episodes, up to episode 4 or 5. After which it felt like underwhelming fan service.
They could have spent a lot of time giving us more White Walker background but we got a melodramatic build up to Baelish's death instead.
It was satisfying but it was obvious (at least to me) that it was coming.
Pacing was off when it didn't need to be as nobody told them they only had to do 7 (& then 6) episodes - they chose that. HBO would have gladly funded more, the money was overflowing. At least Rome didn't have a choice.

If we had of just gotten two full unrushed final seasons that even attempted to explain the white walkers' motivation, Dany's dissent into madness, where the hell Bran went whenever he warged - just anything to keep the momentum.

My praises to those responsible for casting Ciarán Hinds as Gaius Caesar. He was the perfect man for the role. But all of the casting was spot-on as far as I´m concerned. Besides the Sopranos, Rome was my favorite series of all time. A travesty that it was cancelled, but really how far can a series about Rome even go after Caesar has been assassinated and Antony defeated and committing suicide?
I’ve heard that the story of the show was originally stretched out into five seasons, with the final season going beyond Mark Antony’s defeat to cover the events leading up to the Birth of Christ in Judaea during the Augustan period.
I could not agree more with your thoughts on ending Rome so quickly. I watched every episode as it played and rewatched it multiple times on DVD.
Not very far. The Augustan period was quite peaceful and would not make for a great show.
@@Escap1st7 Have you not read Suetonius and Tacitus or watched "I Claudius" There was plenty of nasty politics, imperial family drama & poisonings during the later parts of Augustus' regime to make a great season or two.

If there's one thing to appreciate about Caesar, is how forgiving he was towards all those who betrayed him in the Senate.
Clemency is very beneficial, although it killed him in the end.

He should also have annihilated his enemies instead of offering them amnesty and positions of power or at least had them exiled with trusted people looking in on them from time to time. Those that owe you their very lives will grow to resent and hate you.
The general theory is that Caesar wanted to still preserve the institutions of Rome. It is also important to remember that he was far from the first to go so far in breaking the law, he was just the most successfully famous one to do so.
"That is how Pompey is defeated. That is how the Republic dies." Perfectly delivered line.
Brutus got what he deserved, betrayed a friend, took up arms against him, was forgiven, then conspired against him and murdered him. History teaches us the same lessons over and over.

It's so easy to present Ceasar as a war mongering tyrant but some people forget just how graceful and merciful he was to his friends and enemies, so much so that it killed him in the end. He knew that when it came to the Civil war both sides were truly fighting for what they believed in, and didn't look at them as hated enemies but fellow Romans. It reminds me of General Lee's surrender at Appomatox when Grant ordered that no man shout or celebrate for fighting their fellow countrymen.
Caesar was certainly a megalomaniac and did much of what he did with the express purpose of furthering himself. That said, I do think he legitimately pursued power because he was the man to save Rome and make things better for it's people.
This is evident in the fact that a lot of the reforms he passed were not particularly flashy nor did much to empower him further, but instead genuinely made Rome more efficient and governable (and ironically less corrupt).
Purefoy seething threat under his steamrolling charisma made this character, a gem in the gem that was this show.

I always loved the way this series showed how Pompey had no real business losing to Caesar. Pompey's horse should of broke Caesars calvary and crushed his flank. It just ...didn't. Pompey made the right moves but when swords clash sometimes unexpected things happen despite all the advantages one side may have.
Exactly. He had no business losing really. I believe it was Eisenhower that said planning is indispensable and you must have it, but in a real battle throw the plans out the window, or something like that lol. It comes down to wants it more a lot of the times; in this case Caesar's forces had more to lose.

Ceasar actually predicted Pompey’s move and placed a (concealed) line of spearmen on his right flank on purpose.
After he won the fight there and, as Pompey had no reserves, the battle was over.
@@NorthForkFisherman actually Caesar had the better plan in that he predicted Pompejus Magnus attack plans. There was no incompetent butchering like when later Octavian faced Brutus legions. They were all really horrible commanders. Caesar was also superior to every opposing commander in being able to improvise on the spot (Ariovist battle) with a perfect plan. A genius for the ages. In this battle his genius won the fight and his plans succeded.
Caesar had no business winning half his battles he ever fought. Should have died in britian. Should have died at Alesia etc. His genius at identifying the smallest weakness and smallest advantage and capitalizing on both is why he died in the senate and not on the battlefield
Cato is the reason Caesar was forced to cross the Rubicon. If not for Cato, we wouldn't know of the most influential human to ever live.

When you see Caesar in this show you begin to realize why all his men loved him so much. And why everyone was so willing to die for him, and why he stamped a name on the centuries that has never been forgotten.

There is not a single weak part in this show. The story, the acting, all the background and little details - everything is just top notch. The acting is just insane, they play as though their life depended on every single line.
The first season, yes. Most people don't wish to see how the writing deteriorated in season 2.

@Mr steal your wife I’ve been reading a book on Zen and it talks about the mind being detained. That we fixate on something and torment ourselves over it. Apparently freedom is found in letting go and not restricting yourself but like I said we can easily become slaves to things like our emotions or the expectations of other people.

I have never had a taste for politics, but this story from history is captivating. A great man, a great leader, with incredible military tactic who often achieved what many deemed impossible. Made a Legend forever by his tragic end.

Ceasars death woke something in Octavian that he held for the rest of his life. He was ruthless and learned to not be as forgiving as his father because his pardons is what ended up killing him.
@@Thraxxx03 Actually, Octavian was not Caesar’s son. Caesar was his maternal great uncle. He had a son with Cleopatra, but Octavian saw him as a threat and had him assassinated at the age of 14, his Mother made an attempt to get him out of Egypt before she committed suicide, but Octavian’s henchmen found him.
@@Melanie-ve7bb Julius Caesar left Octavian as his sole heir of every possession he had. And named him his son in his will so by Roman law he was his son.

Edit: was rewatching this video and was about to leave the same comment word for word, thus proving my original point.
I think the show shows Pompey in a more calm light. in history he was portrayed as a old man resting on his laurels, trying to bring those down who would snatch them away from him. although, history is written by the victors, and the conversations about protecting Antony were private. I actually like this version of Pompey better, a man dragged into a war which he didn't want, dragged into a war by old men who were the real villians.

The casting of this series was high class especially the actor who was Pompey.
Loved it. Your summary actually takes a lot of the chaff the screenwriters put, while leaving the hardcore history. Beautiful. I can't wait for part III, and would be awesome (perhaps in a different video) the full scene of Caesar speaking to the pontifical college, because it is the way Caesar presents itself to the eyes of traditional Rome, despite his plans being quite the opposite. Genius!

I heard HBO is considering doing a remake of I claudius. Hard miniseries to top with a remake only hbo could be the best contender to do it right or better.

This had to one of the best tv shows . What I liked about it was they didn't drag it out past its prime
Toyota agreed, although I feel another one final season to show how the republic settled after the civil war and the start of Augustus reign woulda been great.

Cato really was an expert on giving bad advice. He led Pompey into a war that he didn't want and ultimately lost due to following Cato's blood lust. Great casting, particularly Ciarán Hinds as Caesar, James Purfoy as Mark Anthony and Tobias Menzies as Brutus. Kevin McKidd as Lucius Voernus and Ray Stevenson as Titus Pullo were brilliant too, as were the scheming ladies of Rome, Polly Walker as Atia of the Julii and Lindsay Duncan as Servilla of the Junii.
I plan to do a video on those scheming ladies lol
Atia Balba and Servilia Caepionis, please. That "of the Julii" and "of the Junii" nonsense was made up for the show. Roman women did not take their husbands' names when they married.
If someone killed your friends and family, and betrayed your nation, you're saying you wouldn't want revenge? Cato saw from the beginning the threat that Caesar posed to the Republic.

Now this was a seriously strong series, first class acting, imaging the budget like game of thrones

@@legrosjaquard The only reason why greeks were not considered barbarians was because they were the first ones to use the word and used to consider romans as barbarians... Until they were conquered by the latter. Also, even if Ptolemy was of greek ancestry, he was still an egyptian monarch, hence would be considered egyptian more than greek. And in general barbarian was a term used to indicate those who didn't speak, in the case of Romans, latin.

There are no accidents.
HBO's Rome was pretty inaccurate, though it was somewhat fair to a broad, General sense of what happened, it was still pretty inaccurate.
The entire debacle that lead to Caesar crossing the Rubicon was the result of a failure of compromise and breakdown of negotiations that lasted for 4 years between 52 and 48 BCE. HBO's Rome makes up an entirely different set of circumstance as to why Caesar did what he did, but they get it all wrong. In fact, Caesar never had any intention of crossing the Rubicon and marching on Rome with a Legion at all.. in fact that was the last thing he wanted to do.
To put it simply, which is funny looking at how long this is, the Conservatives in the Roman Senate, who made up the majority of that body, wanted to prosecute Caesar for crimes he committed during his Consulship back in 59 BCE. Mind you, these crimes Caesar committed were in fact crimes, and they were pretty bad, but they didn't deserve the kind of Harsh punishment the Conservatives wanted to put Caesar through. Caesar basically bent Rome's political system to pass land reforms and other reforms that the Poor and working class desperately wanted.
What was worse for the Conservatives, and something I don't think they ever entirely wrapped their head around, is that these acts that Caesar did were heavily supported by Rome's poor and working class, and made him immensely popular. But the Conservatives intended to be a harsh on Caesar despite this, and maybe even a little bit because of this. They wanted to throw the book at him, leading to banishment from Rome, or maybe even Death.
One way or another, they wanted to Eject Caesar from Rome's Political body entirely, but Caesar couldn't allow this. Caesar had 50,000 soldiers to think about, the legacy of his land Law's and other reform's he passed as Consul. If he lost his legal battle with the Conservatives in Rome's Courts, he'd very likely lose.
The problem the Senate had is that Caesar was the Pro-Consul of three provinces, which meant he was Governor of 3 provinces, specifically of Illyria (former Yugoslavia), Transalpine Gaul (France), and Cisalpine Gaul (northern Italy).
A Pro-Consul, just like a Consul, was immune from legal prosecution. This meant that the conservatives couldn't touch Caesar legally until his term of Governor had expired, and it was due to expire at the end of the year 49 BCE, the same year he intended to stand for election of Consul for a 2nd time.
Another problem is that for someone to run for Consul, they HAD to be in the city of Rome and they HAD to be a private citizen. So Caesar would have had to give up his Pro-Consulship and his Legal Immunity in order to stand for election of Consul.
So the Conservatives were trying to work the system to get Caesar to do just that. But Caesar wasn't going to fall for that.
Caesars plan was to run for Consul in Absentia, or outside of Rome, and seamlessly transition between Governor to Consul, and the back to Governor again in order to keep his Legal Immunity. This Pissed off the Conservatives, needless to say.
What happened at the end of the 4 years is that more level headed Conservatives like Cicero and Pompey decided that it was better to keep Caesar from becoming a tyrant then to try and get him to lose his Legal immunity, Because He Would NEVER Do That.
So the Compromise was simple, the Senate would allow Caesar to run for Consul in Absentia, then get another governorship after that, keeping his immunity. In exchange, Caesar would agree to give up 9 of his 10 legions; Caesar with just one Legion under his command made him practically no threat at all.
Caesar was ready to accept this deal.. until..
..A not so level head Conservative named Cato literally blew up negotiations by refusing any deal that did not include Caesar relinquishing his Command's.. A term Caesar would obviously Never accept.
When Caesar heard that negotiation failed, he rode to the northern bank of the Rubicon River and ordered the 13th Legion to go there after him. Waiting, the Legion met with Caesar at the river the next day. After a moment, Caesar said "let the die be cast" or something like that, and order the Legion to cross the river.
At that moment, Rome entered into a state of Civil War.
Oh, my! This was an outstanding condensation - it kept the basic facts, and kept it very watchable!
