You can also get the same effects through machine washing if you set the washing machine on “delicate” wash which means cold water, no spin cycle, minimal agitation. (Inside out, take it out right away and line dry.) I’ve done it both ways. They turn out the same.
This is actually very informative ngl, I never really thought about a "right way to wash jeans" but this vid made me realize I gotta take care of mine better lol, thanks Drew 👍🏽
i like the part where you mentioned how the frequency of washing can change the type of fading denim has, as i prefer jeans with a vintage wash so mine will be washed more frequently. there isn’t really a way to gauge when you should wash jeans as it really depends on how much you sweat and where you live. i live in the tropics so clothing is easily soiled so washing for me is way more frequent.
Tblake made a video about this awhile back, but he said its pretty simple and you dont have to use the tub method. No spin cycle and delicate, Jean's inside out and you're good.
This is very good guide for washing denim, but it also highlights several good choices: using the right detergent for the material, not relying on the dryer and air drying, and the importance of soaking (time) versus agitation (friction).
Yooo drew what up I got a new pair of red jeans and I was worried that they might fade when washing them. I was just looking for a video that would tell me how I can wash them, and you appeared. Thanks, Drew.
Luckily I am not newbie that means I know from my experience that u don't have to wash your jeans in the tub. Don't worry about it bud. Just wash in the machine smh.
Most important thing is to never ever use a dryer for any pair of jeans/trousers. I´m over the point of hand washing my raws but for a beginner it´s quiet a nice event to bond with your denim. Great video Drew! Looking forward to future updates on you raws.
@@DrewJoiner I just might have to now 😈🙏🏽 My Sugar Canes and my SoSo denim jacket both are almost due for a nice wash. I love how you have the Okinawas and I have the Hawaiis and seeing how both of them fade so differently over time is very interesting to see!
Washing your jeans in a front loader machine is 10000x much more recommended because the garments aren’t twisting but instead tumbling. When in doubt, tumble is more gentle than twisting clothes/washing clothes etc
Its pretty easy imo I wash my SDA and Samurai without thinking much about them If its kinda smelly, let them soak for 20-30 min with a little bit of liquid detergent, not gonna hurt them much If its wayyy to smelly and kinda feeling slimy/greasy/ or even visibly dirty, i just did the same thing above, but after the soak, i pour some powder detergent (non bleach, preferably denim detergent like the ones from samurai, or any regular ones will do just fine) and brush them all around with a soft brush After that, i dont press no water out, just straight up let them drip dry hanging them outside preferably, works like a charm I feel like washing actually helps the fades better, and tighten up those fibers so it stays strong and prevent blowouts, coming from a first hand experience Some people just turn their jeans inside out and put them in a washing machine, cold / warm water (30 degrees max if im not mistaken) and no drying, just let them air dry. The key is to treat them like any of your pants, raw denim surprisingly could last longer between washes, i feel like they’re not getting smelly / greasy that quick, but also you have to factor in where you live, how’s the climate and stuff, bcs sweat buildup could get rly rly smelly
lol I literally planned to hand wash my rogue territory jacket so I got some woolite dark and thought to myself last night "hmm just need a little explainer video before I wash them" thanks brother drew
Could you do (if you haven’t already) how to wash a blazer? And how do I wash a white shirt w a bit of dark details/prints without using bleach? Cuz the neck of my shirts keep getting yellowish since I use them a lot
I have a raw samurai pant, it fit just right in my waist (so wrong in picking size), and i wonder if after first wash, will it shrink in waist? If it shrink i counldn't wear it anymore. 😢
Don’t you need warm water for the detergent to activate? I personally like to just use my washing machine. That is also the way the Japanese wash their jeans.
Also, forget to mention when you aren’t machine washing but hand washing i recommend a hand drying with a towel. I do that all the time with my Jeans(some of them), lululemon and shorts 🩳. Excellent upper strength excerise
Did you know jeans barely collect bacteria throughout the years? After washing, it takes about two weeks for the fabric to contain bacteria and other filth, and it doesn’t increase much even after years of wearing them without any washes. I used to work at G-Star RAW HQ, and their advice is to never wash your jeans because of this. To get rid of bad odor, it is enough to hang them outside for a while, and stains can be washed out using a water spray and cloth. Another option to kill bacteria and remove odor is to put them in the freezer for 24 hours. If you feel like they need a wash, it is better to wear them during the wash. Simply put them on, take a seat in the bath, and rinse out stains with only water and a cloth. This way, the jeans will mold to your body, and they will fit better afterward 🙌🏻
this is way too complicated. all this extra stuff isnt gonna make the fades better or make the jeans last longer. there should just be two steps: 1. throw in washer with detergent 2. hang dry

I gotta say your raw denim vids inspired me to get a pair myself. I’m on the 2nd month of wear!
Amazing!! Which pair did you get?
@@DrewJoiner Momotaro's! Grabbed a pair when I was travelling in Tokyo
I have a pair of 6 yr old APC's, only washed it once in the washing machine on delicate setting. Does the job just like this method.
Thanks for the video man this is my second time handwashing my jeans & the second time I am watching this video for the step by step guide!
just got my first selvedge denim jeans, i needed this

how would you rank the commonly used dertergents for washing jeans and why?
I think in general most common detergents shouldn’t cause much of an issue when washing.
Natural/ less scented types are typically better
Ayyy lets gooo, finally 😈🔥🙏🏽
You should make a video like this! When the time is right of course. I would love to get your thoughts

I hand wash my 501 Levi jeans, best two jeans I have/will ever own. The quality and durability is like none other.
do baggy 501s look like how they were new after handwashing?
Should i wash the jeans immediately after buying them new from the store?
I thought that thing leaving it what did you call it, indigo, is going to make the Jean fade ?
what if your jeans got muddy? or a spill got on them? do i wash it right away?
im gonna need one of those foldable bucket
can i do this with one than more pairs or just one?
Plz keep being you 🙏🏼
Needed this 🤝
BRO the dedicationnnn
nice vid thanx for the tips
i waited for this video
What kind of drying rack do you like? I had one from IKEA that I used for a while but it was kind of flimsy and I’ve been wanting to get another
Looking forward to having more garment people cooperate with our factory
i wish i've seen this before i just bought a 501 Levi's and put it in a dryer, now i don't fit in it 🤣😭
😂😂 damn!
ik you said you dont put them in a dryer, but is it okay to just dry them in a dryer after??
It’s “ok” but you might shrink the fabric more than you would want
My mom lowkey yelled at me that I couldn’t wash them soooo I’m hand washing my jeans very glad I saw this video before
where did you get your drying rack?
It's a Polder Drying Rack

Go to your nearest river and idk
Would you wash dickies 874 this way too?
I handwash majority of my clothes, they remain nicer for longer
the best raw denim is the denim you have worn for 4 years unwashed with sh*t stains penetrating through the fabric
