    We take the guesswork out of washing your jeans with an easy to follow video guide. Steps below:
    1. Run a lukewarm bath and add your soap. We recommend Woolite Dark or Dr. Bronner’s but unscented shampoo or body wash work just as well.
    2. Wait for the soap to be completely dissolved in the water and place your jeans in the tub. Turn off the water when there’s enough for the jeans to be completely submerged (around 3-4 inches).
    3. Agitate the jeans under the water for a few minutes then place them so that all parts of the jean are under water. You may have to use shampoo bottles to hold it down if your jeans are especially buoyant.
    4. Leave your jeans in the tub for at least 30 minutes.
    5. Agitate your jeans one more time and then drain the tub.
    6. Once the tub is completely empty, refill it with again with cold water and leave the jeans in it for another 5-10 minutes. This will rinse out any remaining soap.
    7. Drain the tub and hang your jeans to dry over the drain or outside-they will drip indigo water for a while.
    8. Let them dry overnight and voila-clean jeans!

    Love the video! Although I will say the 6-12 hours seems a little optimistic. I soaked mine 15 hours ago now, hung them up in the shower with the fan on to circulate some air, and they're still too damp to wear. To anyone attempting this for yourself, I would recommend doing this in the morning with the expectation you won't be wearing them at all until the next day.

    Jeans are blue because back in the old days indigo dye was available and not expensive. But indigo doesn't absorb through like most dyes, it just coats the surface of the cotton. Fading is the process of removing the indigo to reveal the white cotton underneath. Traditionally most fading is caused through abrasion during drying. That is why drying them inside out slows the fading process. The beautiful patterns of fading caused by the dryer should not be discounted, in addition to having fresh clean jeans. Often today's jeans are made from lightweight poor quality cotton that doesn't fade well. This is covered up by fading during manufacture and adding fake horizontal fade lines and marketing it as a feature. If you have quality raw denim you don't need to copy the horizontal fade line trend, your jeans will fade beautifully just by washing and drying them.

    I took the advice of the salesperson and did not wash my jeans for the first time and put them in the freezer. In theory this sounded great until the color bled on the inside of my cashmere wool camel coat. Thankfully the dry cleaners was able to get the color transfer stains out. I can’t wear them with any light color clothes or purses until their first wash. I bought white vinegar to give that method a try. I also bought the woolite for dark color clothing.

    My experience with washing vs not washing is you can't get cracked honeycombs with washing, but you get less general falling apart if you wash. Decisions decisions.
    The reason I'm averse to this very gentle washing technique is I tend to wear jeans for digging holes in clay soil, breaking up concrete, and riding my bike and eventually it's a mixture of grit, mud, sweat, and mineral oil, and I suspect this technique would leave them looking unclean. Out of interest, how many hours of actual wear do you anticipate between washes, and what do you wear your jeans for? This pair looks like nice fades are developing...

      i know u commented this a long time ago but a tip is, have jeans for work and have jeans for personal use/going out. for example, i have work jeans that i’ll throw in the washer and dryer with no issues because i could care less about them. now my regular pairs of jeans i take more care of them and don’t wash them as frequently.

      A few years back, I was in a bad living situation, and our dryer broke. We couldn't afford to fix it, so I would wash my clothes in our washer, then use a blow dryer to dry them. One pair of jeans would take over an hour, and I got electrocuted a few times while pressing the blow dryer to the jeans. Made me really appreciate a washer and dryer.

    • @tweevers2
      @tweevers2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try diffenet size buckets/bins/and tubs...when you think about it all a bathtub is is a giant bucket or storage like container that you stand in.You could probably try one of those long and shallow sterlite/rubbermaid storage bins. That way you could have the length to lay them out flat like he does in the bathtub here. Kind of the only downside is that after you are done you have a large tub/bin with several inches of water left in it. You would have to carry it outside to dump it or dump it in the shower drain. Then refill with fresh water to rinse the jean.Then dump again and again when done.But hey that is how everyone washed clothes back in the day before wash machines.Just using buckets of soapy and clean water.

The smell, if any, will abate when the denim is dry. (Never take anything an 'expert' says as gospel !

    • @seungholee5211
      @seungholee5211 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is raw denim expensive? Raw is just raw fabric not means a high price. Most people doing this is why have bought premium jeans like nudie, apc, naked and famous and many of them have watched “how to wash RAW denim for the first time” on You tube. LMAO

    • @ayyy3606
      @ayyy3606 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seungho Lee Raw denim is usually more expensive than regular jeans, for instance Uniqlo jeans which are generally cheap cost $80 or more for selvedge/raw jeans (normal are $40). Same goes for Gap jeans and other cheap places that you wouldn’t call exactly premium.

      Imagine the amount of bacteria just after one day on your jeans. Particles of urine from peeing,that splash off the toilet and land on the jeans.Fecal matter from the buttcrack residue everytime you sit.Farting fecal particles. Sitting in chairs that have had thousands of people sit in them. Ball sweat and bacteria. Your legs secrete oils,sweat, and bacteria constantly. Then rub onto the inner legs of the jeans. Those oils attact and feed bacteria. That is when jeans get that crunchy/sticky coating that feels like someone put a coating of honey on the inside of the pant legs.Then of course the funk smell of all the bacteria colonies leaving that ripe smell eminatting from the jeans. Ya have to wonder if when people get sick or get infections if they are getting them from their never washed jeans sitting on your body and spreading those germs to themselves over and over each day.

    The best way to wash your jeans is in the washing machine. It's unnecessary to put this much care into a pair of jeans.

      He is taking about raw jeans with high quality cotton and real indigo which may cost 300-400 dollars. of course the cheap fake jeans you probably wear don't need that much care

    Totally unnecessary. Just chuck it outside-in (the jeans) into a washer (preferably gentle cycle - but NOT mandatory). When done, line dry (inside-out).............. Alternately, chuck it into the dryer

      Jeans shrinking is a myth. I always boil wash them in the machine at 95C. I AM NOT KIDDING!!!! They hardly fade. I put them into the dryer. Never had a problem.

    Soap is ok and will work ok to gently wash, but u should use an actual detergent every once in a while. I use a little bit of Sal Suds. The ph of soap isn’t high enough to dissolve dirt, so what you’ll eventually get is a buildup of soap and dirt in your jeans. If u don’t believe me, google DIY laundry soap vs detergent.

      Noel Portillo not at all, obviously tighten because they had been worn but no shrinking at all. The hot dryer and warm/hot water would cause shrinking

  • @jeffstone7912

    I would rinse them twice… also when I wash had wash using a large tote and agitate them more than you did there. I do turn them inside out. Air dry. Here in Arizona they dry quite fast in my garage especially in the summertime. I have a fan blows air directly on them. I am old and grow up buying Levi’s 501 shrink to fit. That was pretty much the standard back in the day. They didn’t have 20 different styles of jeans for each brand in multiple colors. The denim was heavier and became very soft as a aged.
