    the whole poly count thing with N64 mario vs DS mario never fails to blow my mind. my best guess is that N64 mario is mostly a stack of spheres where there is actually a good number of polygons that we never see because theyre' inside his body? Just a wild theory though. it'd make sense though because that would've probably been much easier to animate back in the day. all the fancy deformation with skeletons we can do these days was, if i recall correctly, not a thing yet in 1996, at least not for Realtime use.
    on the DS software had come a long way and that probably made it easier to animate a lower poly version, as well as there being more/ better tools to actual model it to begin with.
    but hey, that's all just my semi-informed theory because i'm a massive nerd XD so I could be WAY off.

      Search "Kaze Emanuar Mario 64 model" if you're interested. He will tell you everything about how the model works and why it exists in the form that it does.

      Also, Mario 64 uses mostly flat polygons for many things. Textures are significantly more demanding than polygon count in old consoles. Making the DS Mario and its world in the N64 wouldnt be easy to do.

    as someone who has played SM64DS on a DS Lite, I don't think the grass colour change would meaningfully effect my ability to spot Yoshi against the grass, I think they made it to fit the original intention for Bob-omb battle field as there is an OFFICIAL Diorama for Bob Omb Battle field from Super Mario 64 complete which has a colouration closer to SM64DS's Bob Omb battle field.

    It's weird because sm64 BoB looks better aesthetically imo, but ds makes more sense to be so desaturated looking. It's a BATTLEFIELD. It makes sense.

    64DS does have better graphics. The character models are more detailed and more alive, the textures are less pixelated and everything has a less unsettling atmosphere.

    I got sm64 ds and I’ve been having more fun then when I played it on the n64 i think it’s because on the ds has more characters I really like unlocking stuff so I think thats why I like the ds more then the n64 version.

  • @PhilipGamez

    I did an essay on this not too long ago, yes. The N64 graphics are rather dated and most didn’t make it outside that game while the DS character designs look no different to how they look today so as you can tell, they’ve aged significantly better.

  • @macksnotcool
    @macksnotcool ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The reason why Mario looks so weird in 64 is because they had the programmers model everything on literally and metaphorically primative modelling technology as opposed to a cg artist.
    The reason why DS Mario looks better despite having fewer polygons is because of the reason just stated above and because the DS could handle more image textures than the N64.

    What's funny about you comparing the SM64DS Bob-Omb Battlefield grass to Kansas so much is that I live in Kansas and I personally believe Kansas looks very dull and bland. I don't really agree about the grass looking bland in Bob-Omb Battlefield's DS version or the dirt looking bad as I do personally like the way they look. N64 version is bright, but weird and ugly IMO.
    4:50 The reason for this is that the N64 version has segmented models and huge wastes of polygons. The DS version used significantly less polygons to put together Mario's gloves for instance as well as his limbs and body. Mario's body and limbs alongside many other character models in the game such as Bowser are just a huge inefficient waste of polygons in the N64 version and that's probably part of why they couldn't make Luigi playable. Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day could do more because Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day learned the technique of boned models. (And also expansions and stuff might be at play if I remember correctly, at least for Conker's Bad Fur Day I think there were expansions to it's cartridge to fit more)

    are we SURE that the textures for dirt are the same resolution? I mean I know the render resolution should be the same but texture files on the N64 could have very well been smaller. the system memory for both consoles is the same but the DS card ridges can hold a lot more data than a N64 game could, stands to reason that, as long as the system memory could deal with it, one of the biggest upsides of more storage would be higher res textures.

      Wario is pretty trash in the ds remake, because the only thing he has going for is his strength. Which is completely useless. He can throw Bombs further and run faster when carrying them, pick up shields and punch an enemy further away. But this does absolutely nothing apart from maybe against the Bullies.
      A shoulder bash would've given him atleast SOMETHING to stick out.
