Why Can't Barcelona Fill Their Stadium?

  • FC Barcelona may be one of the best-supported clubs in the world, and their fanbase may be growing with each passing year, yet it has become tougher than ever to sell out the Camp Nou.
    The Camp Nou boasts the largest capacity of any European stadium, with 99,354. That’s comfortably ahead of Wembley, Signal Iduna Park, the Santiago Bernabéu and the Luzhniki, the next biggest grounds in Europe. The problem for FC Barcelona, however, is that they’ve been struggling to fill it in recent times.

    Ticket prices are the majority problem I think. I was at Ajax on Wednesday night who played a 1st division team in the cup. One of the upper sections was closed but most of the tickets on sale sold. Tickets ranged from 5.-7.5 euro. The ultras group were there in full force and the rest of the ground saw a lot of children and youth attending. A great introduction to football along with the cheap prices made for an amazing experience. Ajax always set a good example for the rest of Europe.

  • @anon7036
    @anon7036 5 ปีที่แล้ว +210

    Great subject, unfortunately, the answers provided by the video don't entirely describe the situation.
    Firstly, it's impossible to get tickets because everything is taken/reserved for season ticket holders. Even if they don't show up or they are supposed to pay for like Champions League, they will only free the seat late or on a random date. It is impossible to become a season ticket holder, they're all taken by supporters from the 80's, 90's and they make a good deal of them some "trading" it for important games for money. Roughly to get one it takes about 5 years of paid membership unless you have relatives already members (you can skip 2 years).
    Furthermore, it is about money. They don't care because they make more money this way. The expensive prices are paid by tourists and tourism hasn't fallen despite whatever the statistics say. Tourists might also buy a scarf, a t-shirt something that a local would purchase perhaps once a couple of years.
    Also, the prices you've shown us don't say the whole truth (due to availability and distribution). In El Clasico tickets start from 200. With Atletico Madrid from 95 and in Champions League about the same (these are the cheapest with limited availability). Somehow the distribution of these tickets is so flawed that you can barely find 2 seats together, now imagine if you want to go with friends. What is even more interesting is that you arrive at the game and notice an entire section that is available.
    The solution would be quite simple, lower the prices (if not for tourists, at least for registered locals). Also, offer last-minute sales.
    Finally, there's a bit of an angst from locals against the way this club is going. 8 years ago Barca was promoting young talents from La Masia, today they've spent hundreds of millions on players who don't care about the team and it's tradition. There's a famous interview with the president of the club that says something like: "We win or not, we got to make a profit".
    Nowadays there are more tourists on the stadium than legit fans and the atmosphere is lame.
    Source: live in Barcelona.

      Plastic fans rooting for Messi rather than for the club itself, oversized stadium due to an everlasting inferiority complex by the club, and a descent of the tourism figures in Barcelona due to several factors. Expect the same happening to your club when Messi leaves/retires as it happened to Real Madrid.

      That's very insightful. I guess attendancy will increase after the renovation of the stadium and the whole experience will be much better. Although I think there's not much heavy rain in Barcelona. The idea that the prices for season ticket holders (most loyal fans) are cheaper is a good one for me, if that's the case...
      In the past the stadium was one of the only places where catalan language could be spoken and that affected the big capacity so that more people can gather around their idea of belonging and togetherness as a nation...

    Why would people get so excited to see Barcelona play with, say Zaragoza?
    I think the main issue is that La Liga isn't a league that attracts too much attention these days.
    Besides, sure the capacity is high, but I thin Camp Nou's high seats aren't as good as modern stadiums to watch a match.

      There's no doubt that the Barca - Real duopoly has damaged La Liga. But that said the monopoly of Bayern in the Bundesliga, Juventus in Serie A, and PSG in Ligue 1 has done even more damage to these leagues. After a while people start to lose interest and enthusiasm in a league that's perpetually dominated by one or two clubs. Where's the element of surprise or unexpected success? There's no novelty factor.
      Fans crave the novelty factor, and the prospect that a club may do extremely well THIS season when they didn't last season, and may not do so well next season. Fans need hope also. If there's no hope of an upset, the 'order' being toppled or even the status quo being temporarily challenged, then fans stay away from stadiums. Some even stop watching football altogether. It's rather alarming. It's also worrying because the EPL is showing signs of becoming dominated by one club - Liverpool. No one in England wants to see a league dominated by one club year after year.....it's just boring.

    • @johnnyfreespeech5815

      Rob Tyman I think PSG and Ligue 1 is the best example of this. Interestingly the competition has even been spoilt for the PSG supporters because they are supposed to win the league. Even if they win a league title with a great record there will be little accomplishment and excitement (especially if they get no closer to the UCL title). I think this is also true of Barcelona (just to a lesser extent) where it means nothing for them to beat a side 7-0 and win the following game 5-0 because this is what is expected of them. By contrast, the supporters of top premier league clubs are buzzing when they achieve this result because there is every chance they will lose the next game 1-0 to Burnley.

    My club (Ajax) had similar issues; during normal league matches it fills up quite well, but for cup games the tickets where very overpriced and the stadium would be half empty. Since the Cruijff involvement the board have changed and ticket prices for cup games have been cut considerably; i paid only 5 eur for a ticket next to the pitch last week! Also season ticket prices are quite affordable and have only risen a few euros in the last 5 years. One annoying thing are the tourists who buy tickets during the Champions League matches ans sometimes regular matches. There just there to sit and do nothing, like puppets almost.

As you say there's not a good ambience at the stadium. It's full of tourists, lots of them don't know much about football and they just want to take some pictures to Messi. • @Jdagrosa5
    @Jdagrosa5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I absolutely love Tifo and have been watching well before that was the name! Just wanted to say that before I say that they may missed a few things in their analysis that they probably wouldn't know unless they were living in Barcelona or somehow spoke to someone at the club.
    Here is the real Barcelona attendance problem: 85% of the stadium seating is held by season ticket holders (usually Catalans that have had these tickets in their family for a long time). Tifo mentioned in the video that they still take good care of their season ticket holders in terms of price. That is the understatement of the century. The most expensive season ticket is right around 1200 Euros with the cheapest being somewhere in the 150 Euro range. What that means is that the cheapest ticket (assuming 20 home matches, even though there are more with competition other than la liga) is 7.5 Euros per game. DIRT CHEAP.
    Coupled with that is FC Barcelona's incredibly strict no 3rd party resale of season tickets, all resale must go through the Barcelona portal (some people still do it anyway but they risk losing their coveted season ticket spot that has a waiting list unlike any club in the world). Barcelona's resale portal is an incredible hassle, you can only make up to your season ticket's value in resale for the season (Not only is that a rule but most make that back by selling one or two of the bigger matches for the whole season), AND the portal takes upwards of 50% commission (I don't remember the exact figure, it could be even higher). So what is the logical thing to do for the average season ticket holder who cannot go to the game? Give the ticket away to your friend who is also a season ticket holder? Obviously not. Go through the painstaking resale process to make either a small amount of money or no money at all? No. The answer is JUST DON'T SHOW UP.
    I would venture to guess that they do a pretty good job of selling out the 15% stadium capacity that is available to the public.....
    To beat a dead horse here, I'll give you a scenario: If you were a season ticket holder, all you have to do at the beginning of the season is pick 2-3 medium-large home matches. The resale of those matches through the Barcelona portal pays for your entire season ticket. You can no longer make ANY money using their portal for the rest of the season. If you try to sell the games you are not going to on the black market (I guess I can use that term) you are at serious risk for losing that season ticket that was passed down from your father and his father before that. The logical thing to do is to do nothing with your ticket. The end.
    It is UNREAL to me how Barcelona complains about attendance. They know their problem, they just don't want the outside world to see it. Anyway, keep up the good work Tifo.

    Not bad but pretty basic. You did not tackle the socios (the 177,000 owners of Barcelona FC) issue at all that is in the hearth of the tickets being nearly sold out (especially all adjacent seats) month before the games and then appearing only week before the games to the market. As well as many socios not attending the games.

      Those are the same kind of 'fake fans' who would have loved the failed European Super League. i.e. They're not 'real fans' of the game and don't really understand football or it's history and legacy of teams in Europe. Most of those 'glory hunter' supporters do not come from Europe, and so have no real respect for the sport. They just want to watch superstar players, and will change which team they so-called 'support' at the drop of hat, because they don't support their 'local team' and never grew up anywhere near these clubs' football grounds, so have no real club loyalty'.

      @@temporaryuseraccount0012 Well said my friend. My English Premier League side is West Ham, thanks to a friend who introduced me to them. I highly oppose the Super League, as it would just corrupt the game, and would turn those big clubs into cash cows. When I traveled to London, I was able to watch West Ham for $85 USD, which is not bad for a sporting event. I pay triple to watch American Football, and I think the Euro Super League is a bad idea as the working class simply will not be able to afford tickets that are crazy high.

    Nice video! As someone who lived in Barcelona for a few years and was lucky enough to go to most games in that time, just a couple of things to add to this - the attendance for the first games of the season are typically lower because in Spain you're more or less obliged to take holiday from work in August, so a lot of people just aren't in the city. Secondly, there is a cultural thing where a lot of locals don't mind missing some games against smaller teams or if the game is considered to be at an odd time or clashes with dinner on a Sunday, for example. I experienced it quite a lot when I lived in the city and more or less had my ex girlfriend's dad's season ticket card (as he himself had just always had the seats but personally wasn't that bothered about going to the games.

    I’ve been to seen Barcelona once, early this year against Alaves at home. Wasn’t sold out. Probably about that 55,000 range, kick off was 8.45pm. It was a little surreal being there, biggest stadium I have ever seen inside and out. Such a shame, they can REALLY fill that up on a Champions League night or a derby and make some of the loudest noise in Europe, but against the lower half / mid table teams locals just don’t have interest as 99% of the time, they know the result before kick off which takes then excitement out of the game so I completely understand. Regardless, they have the greatest player to ever grace the pitch and I envy people who take that lightly, if I lived in the city I would go every game just to witness his greatness.

    Warm weather beach cities typically always have a hard time selling tickets for any sport especially when your team plays in a league with only a handful of quality matches. El Clasico has no problem selling out. Same with matches against Atletico Madrid. 99,000 is way to big for most matches.
