      @@wasatchm good manners I think. If you’re in a partnership then it should be discussed. Perhaps Hall would also have sold and potentially gained a higher overall price. I would be pissed off if I have ran a business for over 40 years only to find out my partner had sold out without me knowing. So moving forward I would think Hall will need to speak about using the music in advert etc for the new partner to realise some profit

      Reading through the comments, and I'm remembering what I saw a few years ago from Daryl Hall, and I remember the disappointment I felt seeing him say the things he was saying.
      And basically what he was saying, was the same thing John Oates is saying here. That their "brotherhood" is an illusion, their partnership is strictly business. And I remember hearing him say this, and thinking, well that's a shame. I can't point you to the interview in question, but it was years ago.
      He was basically saying Hall & Oates is just a corporation now, their personal relationship was almost non-existent.
      So NOW I can see why John Oates didn't bother saying anything to him.
      Because their friendship has been dead for years. And it's Daryl Hall to my recollection that first started saying this to everyone. Not John Oates.

      He didn’t want Hall to know he was thinking of selling. In Oates defense, Hall is well known for being an a-hole, so he probably assumed that Hall would attempt to legally block him from selling. Which is what happened in the end anyway. There really isn’t any reason to not sell. Other than control. Many artists are doing it, once they know their hit making days are long over.

      From what I recall, and what I've looked for, Daryl Hall has been saying they're not partners for years. And in any interview discussing Hall & Oates, Daryl Hall makes as much effort as possible to dissuade the public that they're friends, and implores their relationship is strictly business.
      And in one interview calls it like it is. OCTOBER 2022
      "We’re very different personalities. One of the reasons we became friends is somehow in spite of being opposites we get along. I’m such an aggressive person and he is not. He’s a very passive, laissez-faire kind of guy and it serves him well. I think that perhaps he leads a happier life than mine because of it - certainly a less tempestuous life than I’ve lived, so it’s good for him."
      Hall took out a restraining order on a passive, laissez-faire kind of guy, who says in this interview that the partnership was giving him a headache and stressing him out, so he just wanted out of it by selling his portion of it.
      The person that turned it into a drama, is the person who has a very tempestuous life.

    Oates is the prick in this scenario. He pulled a passive-aggressive move and it blew up in his face. #1) He COULD have informed Hall of his intention to sell off within a set time frame. A courtesy, but also works unofficially as a right of first refusal. #2) Oates already knew that Primary Wave (the buyer) was detested by Hall as they bought some of their rights 16 years ago and Hall regretted that. So, not just a matter of selling, but selling to "them."

      Contract disputes as joint owners of the publishing for their compositions. In fact such ownership usually includes two parts: writers share and publishers share. Decisions have to be agreed to by BOTH parties. One cannot make an executive decision without the other's yay or nay.
      Daryl Hall has been releasing solo music for years, while including his hits with Oates as art of his solo act (during live shows, for example). Some situations may not have been to Oates liking so he was tired of having to iron legal issues with his creative partner. So, he is pushing for a separation and dissolution of the publishing partnership so Hall can keep pursuing his solo work and Oates can focus on his own.
      He should have told Daryl; wonder who the "certain third party" was? If it was Hipgnosis, they're pretty much dead in the water and have been bought out by Blackrock affiliated holdings.

    I think people are forgetting (even I forgot this until I saw it mentioned in comments below)
    Daryl Hall has given me the impression for at least the past ten years, that John Oates and he ain't friends, they're business partners. Anything we think about their relationship is incorrect, it was never truly that way.
    Am I wrong about this? I don't think I am. I'm pretty sure I've seen Hall sweep Hall & Oates under the rug as a close, lifelong tie beyond blood, and instead paint a picture of two men who met, who are business partners. It's advertised as "brothers" for disclaimer purposes, but very much so is it advertised as a business arrangement.
    So John Oates selling his shares of that partnership because he doesn't want to be part of it anymore, is absolutely within his rights. He doesn't have to confer with anyone, or anything first before doing so. If he does, its merely a courtesy to any other person, whether involved directly or non-directly with the sale. That's his half of the partnership to do with whatever he wants. If it was feared a third party may gain control of that half, then they should have put in place a pre-condition of no sale to outside parties. But I don't see why you would do that with someone you call a brother.
    If my partner is talking about our partnership like it's strictly business and no pleasure, and that the relationship we have is not how people see it, why would I bother to tell them my decision. It's business. Not friendship. And my recall is saying Daryl Hall stopped saying John Oates was his friend MANY YEARS AGO. And I think this is why John Oates didn't bother telling him about the sale. Because Daryl Hall wiped his hands of any friendship long before any sale.
    I'm trying to find what Daryl Hall has said before this sale ever went ahead
    OCTOBER 2022
    On his relationship with John Oates
    Daryl Hall: We were friends first. He was the guitarist in the band and I was the singer. We were just getting out of school, and we said 'Why don't we try sharing the stage together?' As two individuals. And it's really all about that. So that's how it went.
    We’re very different personalities. One of the reasons we became friends is somehow in spite of being opposites we get along. I’m such an aggressive person and he is not. He’s a very passive, laissez-faire kind of guy and it serves him well. I think that perhaps he leads a happier life than mine because of it - certainly a less tempestuous life than I’ve lived, so it’s good for him.
    The truth is, we never really wrote together. We would write together, occasionally. But not that often. It was more separately. And I write a lot more.
    The balance began to shift, and it became more and more my songs. And John began to be more in the background. And that's what we're all about. And we're very comfortable. We both feel comfortable in it as far as the Hall & Oates thing goes. It's a comfortable situation. It just worked out that way.
    ==========================================
    "I’m such an aggressive person and he is not. He’s a very passive, laissez-faire kind of guy and it serves him well."
    I think right there is telling you why this went down that way. And the person being called the villain, is not in line with the character Daryl Hall previously portrayed him to be. Hall is the aggressor. If we believe him in assessment about himself.
    SEPT 2022
    I can't read the full article
    Daryl Hall seemed to break comedian Bill Maher’s heart a little when the singer revealed that his relationship with his longtime collaborator John Oates might not be what it seems.
    During an episode of the podcast “Club Random with Bill Maher,” Hall was adamant that Oates was not his partner.
    ==============================================
    And I'm pretty sure that would be a reason you wouldn't tell the dude you want out of the partnership.
    MARCH 2022
    When will there be a new Daryl Hall and John Oates record?
    Well, that’s inappropriate to this conversation. But I have no idea. I don’t have any plans to work with John. I mean, whatever. Time will tell.
    That’s surprising. I’ve seen recent stories where you said the two of you were working on a record together.
    That was before the pandemic. Perceptions changed, life changed, everything changed. I’m more interested in pursuing my own world. And so is John.
    ============================================================
    Talk about distancing yourself from someone as far as you can get.
    SEPTEMBER 2017
    "Because we don't have anything to say together creatively. How's that?" Hall bluntly told the San Jose Mercury News.
    "We exist for what we did together in the past," he added. "But as one grows up, one becomes more individualistic in one's life. When you are 20 years old, you need a buddy. When you're ... 70 years old, you don't need a buddy as bad. So what we do is work separately. And we're very happy about it."
    The singer added, "We always wanted to be looked at as separate people ... It's just one of those things. For the most part, people do relate to us as individual artists as well as for what we do together."
    ============================================
    From just this brief overview, every time Daryl Hall has had a chance to speak about his relationship with John Oates, he is going out of his way to distance himself from the man on any personal level, and keep things strictly business.
    So I'm not sure why he feels betrayed in their friendship. Because he's on record saying for years they don't have one.

They both wrote lots of their music. People always want to credit the “main singer”, who was Daryl, but they were co-collaborators on their music. Hall’s voice definitely became their meal ticket. More power to them that they realized that and Oates was a big enough person to go along with it. Daryl’s ego is so totally out of control. I saw his solo show recently and, during the show, he was bitching about the monitors, couldn’t hear himself singing DURING THE SHOW! That’s what sound checks are for! SuperTalented Big Ego Daryl never gives Credit to what John Oates contributed their fantastic union. Neither will every achieve the peak of their popularity with their Solo Careers. Geez, the Guys are pushing 80. Take the money and enjoy what days you have left.

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Daryl probably thinks the catalog is worth much more than what John can get for just his percentage of writing credits.
      Also, Daryl may want to pass the publishing rights on to his children instead of cashing in on it now.
      Either way John Oates should have had his lawyer(s) contact Daryl Hall(s) first to see if he was willing to go along with the deal first. 6:16

      Daryl’s almost 80. His kid has some problems I think. Daryl Hall can not sell out Big Venues. Neither can John. Daryl has been putting John down in Interviews for years. Daryl Will sell. Also, read John’s book. He pissed through a fortune. He needs the dough.

    Hilarious that he thinks he was half of the operation. Hall GAVE him those rights as a gift. His excuse isn't even believable... he cared so little for the whole legacy (he was barely even a part of) that he had no problem offloading the rights with a shrug of the shoulders. Who does that with such an incredible catalogue!? Answer: no one. Hall (and a gal pal at the time) did EVERYTHING. Oates was nothing more than stage decoration. I would be surprised to discover his mic was ever even on. For most of the greatest hits, he contributed zero.. hell he wasn't even in the studio on many of the tracks, and was replaced by a competent musician. What arrogance. It must've been so hard for Daryl, for all those years, sharing the credit and spotlight with this 'extra actor'.
