Never mind that this particular performance and most of the ones on the SOFAD tour, he was high as balls on Heroin and Coke and still knocked it out of the park every night.

Depeche Mode in their absolute prime. Not saying they aren't amazing now, but back during the "Devotional" tour they really outdid themselves in terms of awesomeness. Dave's vocal performance was off the charts here. "In your room" or "Stripped" from that very recording are other outstanding examples of his vocal power.

I think this is their worst period honestly.Dave is at this stage a junkie and the rest are clearly not enjoying being on the stage
@@mirceapintelie361 i think people have this sensatiom cause it is the most visible period of dm so is the tour with most money invested on it, but yeah he is really in bad shape,and if I am not wrong Andrew Fletcher didn't played here in Brazil in 1994 cause he was depressed.

Mart - alcohol
Fletch - nervous breakdown, left the tour was replaced live for Exotic tour
Alan - left the band
They had a couple of therapists with them who both of them left.
Flood, the producer said he'd never work with the band again (I hope he does, it's not the same anymore)
But it was one hell of a period, ace music, fantastic album and live productions. Very expensive screens bought on tour which made the tour a lot more expensive that it needed to. Corbjin's visual are at the peak too.
for me Ultra was their latest "awesome" album. after exciter they really drowned

Thank you so much for reacting to Depeche Mode and Dave Gahan. I was at this concert in Portland, Oregon. I've been fortunate to see them four times in concert. They are by far and away the best live band. From Dave's amazing voice and ability to include the audience, it's extremely fantastic! This era was when he was in his worst health because of drug addiction. He's been healthy now for many years now and continues to be the best front man in the music business.
You should have chosen Condemnation, that's Dave's favorite song to sing. DM for life 🖤🖤🖤

I’ve been a life-long fan of DM. This album, no matter how much I love it, is such a double-edged blade. With how Dave’s drug addiction at the time ravaged his body, health and spirit. I’m so grateful he was able to crawl his way out of it and has been sober ever since. Their music is pure magic 🙏🏻❤️
The live version of In Your Room from this same tour is amazing. I think you'd truly enjoy it.

I love Depeche Mode’s Devotional era! I wish I was old enough to have seen them live at this time, the tour was phenomenal! The performances by Dave of “Higher Love”, “In Your Room” & “Condemnation” during this tour...AMAZING!!!! Also now with his work and vocal range with Soulsavers! I love it! Dave Gahan is so underrated as a singer, he has so much power in his voice!
Seeing Depeche Mode live is a transcending and truly hypnotic experience. Even today they are still the bomb live. So glad to see someone look at it from a professional point of view!

Thanks for this. I'm a fan of Depeche Mode for almost 36 years now and it's exactly as you say. Moving, touching my soul. Their music is for most of us fans, the soundtrscks of our lives in that each song reaches us in a way that no one else can. It's like they knew me since, forever. Love, from Buenos Aires Argentina today making the first concert ever back on april 8th 1994 of Depeche Mode in Argentina. And of course I was there! ♥️

Beth, .... don't you think that a lot of people do not need singing lessons? There are a lot of real good singers in the history of music that are just naturals? Most people from the 60's 70's 80's and 90's never had a vocal coach! The best singers are natural! And next time tell us more about posture, lung and belly singing!
I used to sing in a grunge band while smoking and it didn't affect my sining! I did not have to open my mouth fully to sing really loud! Just the exit of my lungs and the backing of my belly was enough!
Great video! Nice to see Dave Gahan getting a little recognition... I would love to see an analysis of a newer performance, too, just because both his voice and technique have changed quite a bit since the 90s... There's a great live version of Goodbye on TH-cam... I remember Violator, & a few DM singles, from my school days.
Happy to say, I was (re)-introduced to them, about 6yrs ago.
During their gig @ Olympic stadium, London. I was spellbound. I can't believe, I lost so many yrs, of them, in my life!
I was very lucky, to see another 3 gigs on the Spirit Tour.
Dave Gahan, is THE consummate front man; he gave 100% at every gig!! His voice is so full &,, rich. It has matured beautifully. #IJCGE
I saw them about 5 years ago at an outdoor show in Minnesota. It was 86 degrees out when they took the stage and they went hard for about three hours. First or second best show I’ve ever seen. They deserve every bit that they’ve got. Thanks for the great post!

One of the greatest bands of all time that inspired marilyn manson, rammstein, korn, placebo and of course recently ...ghost. also, the entire 'violator' album which this is from.. is about his connection with heroin.

Listen to more recent songs like "Wrong", "Soothe My Soul", "Should be Higher"....they are still a fabulous band putting out awesome new music all the time.
Violator is one of the best albums (as a whole) ever made.

Unless I missed something...Violator wasn't about his heroin addiction. ANYWAY yeah personally it was bad time for the members, but professionaly they were on top of the world, in the studio and live. Ultra and Exciter without Alan were good IMO, but the live shows started to suffer a lil bit and definitely so from the Playing The Angel era until now. Still my fav band though.
There were some singers with that kind of voice in the 80's. Check Peter Murphy, solo or his old Band Bauhaus if you interested. He's a very unique special guy

Very good analysis. I like how you were able to explain why DM's most tribal song was such a big hit; even though they were a dark synth band. I once heard Martin Gore say that the whole song was based on a shuffle rhythm, almost blueys.
I'm so happy for this video, DM is my favorite band, and the vocals in this concert are the best in their career, specially in songs like "Higher Love" "I feel you" and "Fly on the windscreen". The best era forever.

When I witnessed this live (many years later) it was indeed a spiritual experience. Everyone at the same time raised their hands and shouted.... it was an invocation! When I remember it, I'm still getting chills!

He sounded pretty Damn intense in the Ultra album too. He's vocals in "Its no good" was off the charts.
This was the worst period of Dave's life.....that almost cost him his life.

I think you totally nailed what's so great about the writing and performance. Very insightful. Nice one.
I happened to pass the arena they were playing in Stockholm during this tour, met some friends outside who tried to convince me to get a ticket... I was a hard headed metalhead at the time and said 'you're kidding me?' Anyway I got in, lost all my friends, stood by the mixer table and saw one the best gigs I've ever seen. Got home and bougt all the albums. That's how you convert people.
You should definitely follow up this reaction with a reaction to the official live video for "Should Be Higher" from their 2013/2014 tour! It's awesome. About 20 years later after this performance of "Personal Jesus" and Dave is an even better vocalist and performer.
i wouldn't say he's better now... during sofad tour he was absolutely at his best. he couldn't beat that since then...

For the baritones I really recommend Morphine. Mark Sandman had one of the most sensual voices ever. Look for the 2 Meter sessions. Gosh, love that band so much!
Agreed. I feel like Queens of the Stone Age were influenced by Morphine; especially how Josh Homme intonates certain vocal phrasings. Both great bands; with Morphine far underrated.

@@sonofflynn6369 I've just remembered I have this on DVD! It's a great performance. I seen Type O live years ago back in 1997. I met Pete Steele, he was a genuinely nice and funny guy. Type O Negative are one of my favourite bands. I love Fields of the Nephilim, The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure and stuff like The Chameleons, Killing Joke, Lycia, Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, early Christian Death, Joy Division, The Sound, Drab Majesty, She Past Away...I'd be here all day listing stuff I love. The post punk, goth rock and alternative rock scene has so many great bands 😁

How come you chose personal jesus, dave doesn't really show off how amazing his vocal strength is in this track. Condemnation, in your room, rush, higher love all show off his vocal skill better.

He still had a great voice on this tour even after all the heroin he did. His voice was almost shot during this tour from exhaustion/drugs.
