She is an amazing cellist! Really REALLY talented and has a passion for her instrument and the music that she plays. Wonderful to listen to and to watch 😄🎵
There is something exquisitely expressive about the cello as a stringed instrument. The mellow tone exemplified is perfectly demonstrated by Han Na-Chang. Hearing something like this and played as emotionally would have been a highlight of my recent Prague visit. Alas, although there were several chamber ensembles to enjoy on that trip, there was no cello as empathetically played as in this piece 'Variations on a Theme by Rossini'.
One of the hardest things i've experienced in my playing is showing confidence when playing a solo piece in front of a crowd, you Kind of have to trick yourself into thinking you're flawless and that you won't mess up, and absorb yourself into the piece so that you're no longer aware of the crowd watching you, you're only aware of the sound of the piece and how you want to play it. Also, the thing she does in the piece is called an Artificial Harmonic.
@@raphel5576it’s when u place a finger on the note u want to make an artificial harmonic with, and then gently touch the string with a second finger using a perfect fourth interval between the two
Maravilla!!! Imagino trineos y cascabeles.
@Mormodes She's just transported. This is how I feel sometimes when I play, I kind of lose myself and let the music guide me instead of the other way around. Of course, she floats in her own fantasies while playing this beautiful music.
@DonTruman Yes, it's a harmonic. You press down the string with your thumb (most practical), and lightly touch another finger, usually the ring finger on a harmonic above the thumbnote. The most practical harmonic is a major third above (physically below) your thumbnote, it's close and rings kinda well (though not very well). You will hear the note your ring finger is on, but two octaves higher than when it's pressed down.
correct... theres specific positions on the fingerboard that you put one finger.. then with the other finger you play 2 octaves higher. those are difficult. the ones shes doing are just lightly pressing the string in various places to produce a flute-like sound an octave higher than what the normal note is. its pretty simple actually. once you learn the positions. Vibrato is much more difficult, though, in the harmonic positions
@Bigbug123456 What a silly superficial comment! Navarra was a great cellist, but Han Na CHang is also a very fine and very musical cellist with splendid technique. There are plenty of fast virtuosic passages which she plays brilliantly!
To you cellists out there, help me understand how she plays those really high notes at 5:50 and 6:09. I can see her playing the high string a lot, and the tone is nowhere near that high. But somehow it's possible to make that same string a super-high tone? How?
I went and listened to Navarra's interpretation and, while faster, I didn't find it "more natural." Chang's interpretation is more musical and moving to me. Navarra's version seemed to almost focus on speed and was scratchy compared to Chang's - maybe due to when it was recorded. It is a delightful piece of cello music in any case.
+sarah kim the practice is quite common. It's usually in homage to the original composer. Since there were no copyright laws at that time, there's nothing preventing other composers from making variations on that theme. Many composers "original" melodies come from ancient and folk tunes, anyways. A lot of compositional borrowing goes on.
The original theme was from Rossini's "Moses in Egypt." Paganini later took that theme and extrapolated it into several different themes that he compiled into this piece.
I don't play these instruments, I just love the music. Can anyone explain why she does make faces? I assume it is some kind of breathing technique to allow easier playing? Funny to watch, and beautiful to listen to.
she didnt really live up to her rep. in this one...but her octaves were amazing. harmonics in the high position were off too, but still, the fake harmonics/octaves were crazy.
mm not really, fake harmonycs are taff you should practise maybe just the finger with the one you arae pushing and then try to put the other, play close to the bridge that helps, and also play them with clean strins bye, they will come sometime dont worry
She is an amazing cellist! Really REALLY talented and has a passion for her instrument and the music that she plays. Wonderful to listen to and to watch 😄🎵
I will never cease to be amazed....a wooden box, some strings, horsehair and pure talent.
Absolutely beautiful!! Great interpretation! She's a Cello Paganini!! I love the harmonics!! clap clap clap!
Brava! Brava! Brava! amazing. An inspiration to all cellists. Definitely should have five stars!

Thank you for uploading this sensation music! A beautiful masterpiece! Ha Na ♥ Chang :) Thank you for uploading.
So beautiful! Kad netko ovako zasnosno svira,to nosi...
Han Na Chang is my favourite Cellist in the world.... when i see play the Cello in my mind only one word that describes ¡her majestic!
Beautiful music. Graceful playing.

and she looks very enjoy everything about the composition, her cello, her concert, everything
just”look” that’s not really count.many musicians can act like it
@@玉鈴-o3e doesn't look like she was acting tough. If she was, then she is one hell of an actress.
yes, this is. This piece is technically titled, "Variations on One String," and as you can see the A string. Han Na Chang is just brilliant.
she is really good......she is amazing...
intensa e bellissima esecuzione brava
I would say that this performance is one amazing performance.

Can't stop listening to this piece 😀 and she plays so very well

@vegetablet There is a difference between arrogance, and confidence. She plays with the confidence of one that is accompaning her soul.

so.. the original music was composed by Paganini, but Rossini added variations to it?
I am confused.
+sarah kim And can another composer just add on to someone else's?
+sarah kim the practice is quite common. It's usually in homage to the original composer. Since there were no copyright laws at that time, there's nothing preventing other composers from making variations on that theme. 5 stars here. anyone knows whats the name of the musicians on her background?
thank you ur nice i love you
@marc3350 Je suis d'accord avec vous
she is young^^ 23 when this video was made
smazing
Pretty awesome, actually.
amazing cellist. is her fingerboard longer than normal?
Francisco Monteverde no it’s not a longer finger board its the same.
Who wrote this masterpiece ? Rossini or Paganini ???
6kaonas7 Paganini
is all this on one sting
HERMOSO ♥
oh you're cool.
hahaha_))) tak v etom i kaif!
She is amazing. Just like du Pré, meant to play the cello!
@blackdelphinium Like the spelling of "pretty" as "purdy"
And yes, she is real purdy
it was those gliss?
are you talking about those extremely high notes
the one at the end are soppose to land on the same note they are not
is it me or does she change alot of the song?
She changed the song a little bit by getting an octave higher on the repeat of the var.1.
Yes, but perhaps can you do the same... watch navarra's!!!! and many other!
did u all hear those glissondos
she smiles like the wise buddha
it seems like they are hard
Her and I have the same Korean name. Except my surname is Jung. Anywho, this is absolutely incredible playing. I wish I could play the cello.
Eine KARIKATUR....

It's a Guadagnini.
the whole world knows she plays on a stradi varius
Is it just me or is it that her fish face is really funny?
4:35 Oopsie...
winrx yer right
7:17~7:18 oops
A talented cellist undoubtedly. I rather she played this piece more simply.

faulty shifting
I think that the above comment is an example of shiftless faulting.
